My macbook pro won't hold a charge for more than a day...do I need a new battery?

my macbook pro won't hold a charge for more than a day...do I need a new battery?  I have a 13" early 2011 model.

A: did you leave most of the time or always plugged in?
B: did you often drain the battery very low?
If so, then thats the issue
From Apple on batteries:

Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
Peace

  • My Iphone gets hot and wont hold a charge for more than 8 hrs

My Iphone 5c gets hot even when i dont have a protective case on it but it is worse when it is charging. The battery will only hold a charge for at most 8hrs, i have taken it into the store and they always say nothing is wrong with it. I find that hard to believe since my old iphone that was 2 years old lasted longer. I have already turned my backlight down and turned off notifications. Any ideas?

Charging has always been recommended without an iOS device in a case...many of those do not allow heat to dissipate.
Turn down screen brightness, turn off things you don't need, like Bluetooth if not being used, change the Mail push timing so it is less frequent...all things that use energy should be stretched out to save battery time.

  • Droid X battery will not stay charged for more than 5 minutes. Help

My Droid X will not hold a charge for more than 5 min. 1 phone call and the phone shuts down.

        bdsutton,
Thanks so much for your inquiry! There hasn't been a software update for the Droid X since 2/16/12.
I would like for you to put the device in Safe Mode http://bit.ly/OAXCYh and then check your email to see if it still turns off.
Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.
I want you to try that to see if there is something else affecting why the phone battery goes low only when you check email.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reboot of the machine solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs.  When I close the lid and listen carefully, I can hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so.
This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

    I don't have launch2net installed.

    maybe but
    most likely no
if you have many apps running and using data and localization at the same time yes maybe
but batteries get worse and worse and worse over time until they die a software reset will not change that

  • My ipod touch 4th generation no longer holds it's charge for more than 40mins,needs new internal battery but I have no idea how to go about this. i love my ipod and don't want it to loose power completely, can anyone help?

My ipod touch 4th generation no longer holds it's charge for more than 40mins from full power, think it needs a new internal battery but have no idea how to go about this and am no longer covered by my guarantee. Can anyone advise me on what's best? Thanks in advance

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use an Apple wall-mount charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPod Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • My Macbook Pro will not hold a charge

If I charge my Macbook Pro 13" to a full charge, then unplug it, the battery will drain over the next 2 days.
Specifically, if the laptop is "closed" and just sitting on my desk, the little white led light flashes slowly and the laptop loses its charge in about 2 days.  Is this standard?  It's quite annoying....
Should I take this back to Apple and have it serviced/looked at?
    Thanks,
    Lance

  • Premiere Pro and Soundbooth won't play video/audio for more than a second.

Ok, so my issue is that Soundbooth won't play audio for more than a second. It plays a quick bit then stops. Premiere Pro also does the same with video, it plays a quick bit then stops. I don't know if it is connected or not but when I try to change the audio output in Soundbooth to System Default I get this error:
I set the permissions to premiere and soundbooth to full but it didn't work. I've tried UnInstalling and ReInstalling but that didn't fix the issues either. All of the other programs seem to work. Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Here is the fix.
    1. Open Finder and navigate to /YOUR_HD/Library/Preferences
    2. Rename or move to the Trash the file:   com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist
    3. Relaunch The Program

  • New Ipod's been charging for more than 12 hours!

    Hi,
I got the new shuffle yesterday and hooked it to my pc. It works fine in that it gets detected by itunes and everything but heres the thing....my shuffle has been charging fr more than 12 hours at a stretch now but the indicator on the device still shows orange! Surely it cant take that long to charge! I've tried ejecting the device from itunes...but its still the same. I'm almost getting to the conclusion that my shuffle is somewhat flawed in this department....unless im missing out on something. The manual says it should take about 3 hours on the outside...I've already done 12+ hours! Help!
    Thanks

I've got three USB slots on my laptop. I use two of them continuously. One's for the mouse and another one for my Western Digital External HDD. I've also tried switching the ports around and still no go. I'm gonna try and hook the shuffle up to my sisters laptop when I go there next to rule out the possibility of a problem on my computer. I've checked and confirmed that I have USB 2.0 ports on my laptop. I stay in India and as you might have guessed sending the shuffle back and having another one shipped out isn't the easiest of options for me. Having said that....if that's my only option...then ofcourse I'll go ahead with it. I just wanna make sure that I've tried everything I could before sending it back.
    Thanks for your help!

  • MacBook pro won't run unless charger connected

    Hello
Suddenly my 2 year old MacBook Pro will only boot if the charger is connected, if I disconnect the charger while the computer is running, the screen dims after about four seconds then it dies completely. Puzzling since the battery still seems to be healthy. Any ideas before I take it to the shop? I've been running Snow Leopard with no problems for three months and there are no peripherals attached.

Your battery has completed a fair number of cycles, De Boffined. How long since you calibrated it?
I'd be inclined to check the battery connections for any dirt or corrosion , and reset the SMC (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 )
If the problem persists after that get the battery tested.
    Cheers

  • My Macbook Pro is barely holding any charge

    Help!
My Macbook Pro is only 2 weeks old and on a full charge its depleting in about 40 minutes.
Ive rung apple care 6 times already and i havent managed to fix the problem.
Ive tried a power reset 3 times and that hasnt worked either.
    PLEASE HELP!

There's a program called Winclone that will make an image of it that you can then restore to the new machine. Run Winclone, do a full backup on your MBP, then when you get a new one you can just create the Bootcamp partition and use Winclone to put the image back.
Don't miss the 14 day window. They're strict about that.

  • TS3274 My ipad won't hold a charge for very long.

Just recently my ipad quit holding a charge. What used to last me all day has turned into only a couple of hours. Is there a setting or something I can change to regain the charge I once had. My I pad is only a couple of months old.

    Try turning off the following:
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Push>OFF
    Settings>Notifications>Mail>Gmail>Notification Center>OFF

  • MacBook Pro Won't Boot Install DVD for Fresh Install

    Hello All:
I just received my new MacBook Pro ( 13", 2.53 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD ) and I am unable to use the OS X install DVD to do a fresh install.
When I put the DVD in while in OS X, it recognizes the DVD immediately and seems to function fine but when I reboot to use the disk utilities, that is when the problem starts.
I get the grey screen, then the grey apple logo, and then the DVD drive spins up and appears to be loading. After about 2-3 minutes of waiting, the screen goes black and the system is non-responsive.
I've tried multiple times and ways (option key and 'c' key) to boot it with the same results.
When I put the OS X install DVD into one of my other Macs, it starts up the utilities without issue.
For all intents and purposes, the system seems to have no issues with the DVD drive ( can play movies and read DVD-R disks ) but I cannot boot from it for some reason.
Any ideas? Could this have anything to do with the fact that this system has the 256 GB SSD?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    - Dan

Thank you for the repl Michael. It is greatly appreciated.
You are right, there isn't a need for a fresh install but being in IT, my natural instinct is to want to see how everything works if only out of my own curiosity. In this case the attempt to do a fresh install brought to light a potential issues.
I did indeed do the option key, the 'c' key, the disk utility option from the install media, as well as setting in the drive options of system preferences.
The install media is the media that shipped with the MacBook Pro so I would hope they shipped me the correct one but you make a great point and I will try double checking with them as well.
    Thanks,
    - Dan
