My MacBook Pro won't shutdown and can't force it to turn off using the power button.  My computer is few months new and this is the second time that I have problems.... hate it!

I close my computer and when I open it to wake it up,it didn't no respond.  The screen is black and can turn it off holding the power buttom.  Also, I cannot remove the battery beacuse the stupid thing is sealed... help!!!  I just bought my Mac and this is the secon time I had problems with it.  It already had the motherboard replaced... *****!!!

I need to work on my computer now... and the store is closed, that is why I am using this site to see if someone has a quick solution.
Why in the world Mac makes a computer with a battery that is not easy to pull out or rest???. Should I unscrew the bottom cover and try to remove the battery? Is there a reset button?
I am hating Mac now... I have never has so many problems with a computer and few solutions at hand... it seems that this is a common problem but it has been delete from the forums in the Mac site...
What is going on???

  • 2008 Macbook Pro won't wake up - can't force reboot

I have searched the interwebs high and low on this one for a long time and haven't found a solution, I post now in desperation as I need my mac urgently.
Every once in a while my mac will not wake from sleep, the problem has persisted now for over a year and even a trip to the genius bar didn't help.
I've read many a post on macs not waking up, but in all of them a force restart is possible. Not here, in my case the mac will simply not wake up no matter what, until hours or sometimes days later it simply wakes up again like nothing happened. Last time it occurred I took it to the genius bar (a fair hike for me) and sure enough, it woke up first time. They ran all kinds of tests and nothing was wrong.
I've tried all the zapping of prams and resetting of power systems, I've tried every key combination I can think of, whilst some seem to do something - make the light flash or turn off, get the fans chugging, make little 'computer' noises etc, it just never wakes up. It never shows up on the network, it never makes the startup chime or any other system noises, it really is in a state of hibernation.
If I close the lid, the light on the front glows bright, if I open the lid it gets dull. If I force shut down it goes off completely. But hitting the power button brings it back on (to dull). Holding the power button down to force reboot causes the light to flash rapidly but then nothing happens.
Removing the battery, letting the battery drain, or unplugging the magsafe makes no difference.
All I can ever do is wait, and wait, and so far each time it has just eventually come back to life when it was good and ready, usually around two days later.
When it does, the screen I left is usually still there, just how I left it, only its black and white and a little progress bar chugs along for a few seconds and then its all back to normal, even apps I left open are still there running, like it was really just asleep the whole time.
If anyone has any ideas at all I'd be most appreciative.

Well, if You or Genius did all things like PRAM, SMC reset, etcetera, why not read threads about the sleep/wake issue? There you'll see that this is not a uncommon problem.
I solved it by setting the hibernatemode to 0 (zero) via a Terminal command:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
Then you can get rid of the sleepimage (pagefile) like this:
    sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
(sleepimage is as great as your built-in memory (in my case 8GB)).
There is even a little program in the Appstore to do this (and more) for you:
    Smartsleep.
    Try this.

    Hey terremo,
Thanks for the question. From the information you provided, it sounds like the iMac is successfully turning on, however video is not displayed. These symptoms can usually be isolated further by the troubleshooting steps in this article:

    Greetings bruce0bruce,
It seems your device is not functioning, and the Sleep/Wake button isn't working as well. Based on the information you have provided, it appears your iPhone needs to be serviced. • MacBook Pro won't shutdown or restart properly

I am having difficulty shutting down or restarting my core 2 duo macbookpro. When trying to shutdown or restart normally (either by clicking on the blue apple logo on the menu bar and clicking shutdown/restart or by tapping the power button and clicking shutdown/restart), OSX closes all running programs, everything (icons, menubar, dock, etc) disappears except for the wallpaper, and then the screen turns a little dim like the mac is about to shutdown and the little circle (progress) shows it's running. So far everything is completely normal. the problem is that it stays that way and never restarts or shuts down. eventually, i have to restart manually by holding down the power button. I've waited for long periods of time - nothing happens.
moreover, I have to say that this is not after I've installed anything. it's just the way it is & this laptop is completely new.
ANY type of help or solution would be great.
    Thanks.

Sounds like you've got an application hanging on shutdown.
    Try this:
Close all applications. Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities. Have only "My Processes" showing. Sort them by name. Do you see any addons or extra applications you've installed in this list? If so, end the process. If you see something you don't recognize at all, ask about it. Once you've killed all the processes related to addons, try shutting down the computer.

  • After running iTunes, Macbook pro won't shutdown

I am using iTunes 10.4 and have recently installed the Lion OS. The problem has existed for about 3 months now (I was running snow leopard and iTunes 10.3), I have been to the Genius Bar numerous times, on the phone with Apple Care and in many chat rooms, all to no avail... The problems is that if I open iTunes at anytime after starting my system, then I am unable to shutdown. The screen usually goes as far as the bluish/gray screen with the spinning ball but then I have to hold in the power button to shut it down completely. This problem does not occur when i run any other program, only when I use itunes. Activity monitor claims itunes is closed and not using any CPU, so I really don't know what the problem could be! I have used the repair function in disc utility and I have done a complete system re-install (once with time machine and once without), nothing seems to work! Any suggestions out there on how to solve this annoying problem?

    Hey, I found something.
    1. If you have other PCs (running Windows XP/2003/Vista/7) in your home, shutdown them first.
    2. Open iTunes.
    3. Close iTunes.
    3. Then shutdown you Mac.
    Try it.

  • MacBook Pro won't start up, can I transfer photos to iMac any way

My MacBook Pro will not start up after latest update, I contacted Apple Support who said I needed a thunderbolt cable, I purchased this and tried to put my photos onto someone else's IMac, iit won't work any suggestions please.

You may take out the HDD and install it into an enclosure.  Then connect it to a Mac via USB and If the HDD is functional, you should be able to take the data off of it.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro won't shutdown after disconnect...

    we have 3 macs (10.4.6 mpb, 10.3.9 G5, 9.2.2 g3 imac!), some printers, etc...
hooked up thru an ethernet hub (from a cable modem, into a router).
we keep a database on the G5, and everyone connects to that & moves files around.
the macbook pro just replaced a tibook, running os9.
whenever i go to shut it down (either after ejecting the G5 connection, or not),
it will not shut down; spins forever.
    any ideas, anyone??

  • While starting up my Macbook Pro it runs for like a minute. Then it turns off. I know i need to replace my battery...is this my problem? Its connected to the wall so does it still need battery to run?

My Macbook Pro wont stay on. (a min ar so)
I know my battery has to be changed...it's not storing any energy  no more...its done.
But my Macbook is connected to the wall....so it gets its energy i would say?
Is it possible the Book needs a good battery also when its connected?
You think my problem will be solved by buying a new battery?
HELP I NEED THIS FOR WORK!!!
    thanx Coen

The MBP should still operate when you are using a power adapter and plugged into a properly functioning wall outlet.  From your post it sounds like you simply need a new battery so the you can operate the MBP without a power adapter.
If ot does not operate with the power adapter, you have other electrical issues.
    Ciao.

  • My letter "A" in my macbook pro retina 13 inch keyboard is broken does my warranty with apple cover it i bought my computer just 5 months ago :(

yeah as the title states it  my macbook pro letter A is broken does apple cover it or do i need to pay for it?

The Apple warranty is one year, so take it to an Apple store genius bar for examination by the techs.  They will determine the reason for the breakage and overage.

  • My iPod unexpectedly stopped working. It won't turn on even after pressing the power button for 1 minute. My iTunes no longer "recognizes" the iPod and is forcing me to restore it but I'm not sure if that will work! HELP!!!!!!

Thank you and please respond as fast as possible -----

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
