My Macbook Pro won't start anymore - Tries to start then shuts off...

I bought a new Macbook Pro recently to replace my old Macbook Pro. Before I began transferring files, my old Macbook Pro told me to update all my software first. I updated the software and then went to restart. After I restarted the old MBP wouldn't turn on properly.
Every time I turn it on, it makes the default Mac noise, then shows the apple logo for a few seconds before shutting off to black screen. This has happened ever since.
I've heard people saying I can fix this via single user mode or reinstalling the OS, but I no longer have the disks. I also can't take it into the Genius Bar since THe screen is very cracked making it difficult to transport via subway.
I'd appreciate any direction or advice I can get since I'd really like to recover a lot of the files. Some people I know don't think it's hardware issue, let me konw what you think!
Thanks for your help.

I've backed up some. But I'd love to be able to get at the other stuff on there. I'm going to acquire the disks although I just don't remember which version of 10.5 it is.
Also do you think there would be any way to transfer the files even if its not completely booted up? Like if I used Migration Assistant through a firewire or ethernet? Or would I have to OK the transfer somehow on the other computer. There must be some what to tap into the hard drive without booting completely through.
THanks for your help.

MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear. Computer won't even start in safe mode.

My daughter's MacBook Pro was doing exactly the same thing.  I don't know if it had anything to do with the latest update.  She called me about a week ago saying that her MacBook began running slower by the day .  She then called me Friday and told me that it wouldn't get past the gray screen and the gear just kept on spinning.  I did everything I could over the phone including Safe mode which it wouldn't go into and thought maybe it was the hard drive.  She took it to the Apple store.  Originally, they also thought it was the hard drive.  It ended up being a corrupted operating system (Lion).  Apple genius simply re-installed Lion and she's back up and running.  Good thing she backed up right before it crapped out.  She'll be restoring everything tonight.  Don't know if re-installing Lion will help your situation, but it did the trick for my daughter.

  • MacBook pro won't boot anymore

Today my MacBook pro was running a bit slow so I shut it down and started it up again, it never got to the desktop and now just sits on a blue screen with the occasional loading wheel. I've tried booting of the system disc but it just goes to the blue screen again. This has happened before and it turned out to be a faulty hard drive, I'm hoping isn't the case as it's not covered by the warranty anymore. Any help will be appreciated.

Take a look at this support article:

MacBook pro only lasts a few minutes on battery and then shuts down!

It varies. Some do not even last 1 year but others 4+ years.
    Apple provides only 1year warranty.

  • Macbook Pro running slowly, bad crunchy(?) sound, and now shuts off randomly

    Hi there,
I have an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro running OSX 10.8.4. For the past six months or so, my computer has been running relatively slowly. I brought it into a shop, but the guy couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. In the past two months or so, the sound has been terrible, whether it's watching youtube videos or listening to something on itunes or playing a game. it will sound fine, until like 30 seconds in when it will go all crunchy and garbled and terrible sounding. I don't know how else to describe it. Just now, my computer randomly turned off in the middle of me playing a game, and at first it wouldn't turn back on. I'm a little freaked out by that, as I'm a graduate school student and my computer is my life. I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with it. :/
I've attached the crash report from the shut down here. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks for your help!

  • My mac pro won't boot. It clicks and then clicks off

    Help!

The traditional way to debug this is to remove EVERY item that could be pulling too much power, and try to get the CHIME. Then add an item at a time to get it working fully, or discover what is causing the problem.
    Remove AC power and Remove:
    All external devices
All PCIe cards including the graphics card.
    All Hard drives
    All Optical drives
All RAM DIMMs (note where they go)
With NO RAM DIMMs, you should get a Mac Pro that powers up, runs the fans, and flashes the power light (" Help I have not enough working RAM to continue").
Power off, then restore some RAM, and next Startup you should get the CHIME. The chime is generated in Software when the Power-On Self Test has completed without Error. If a source of software can be found, Booting is likely.
Then build up one item at a time.

  • My macbook pro won't zoom anymore

i went to system preferences and trackpad and the zoom buttons are all checked off. i'm able to zoom in and out using "command, +/-", but the trackpad won't let me zoom by pinching

There are two places on settings where you can tunr zoom on or off for the trackpad.
They both need to be on for it to work.
The first is under: system preferences>trackpad>scroll & zoom, then you just need to chekc the box to turn zoom on. ( this is the one you already have checked i think)
The second is under: system preferences>universal access>seeing, then check the box that says zoom.
    Hope this helps.

  • Get start-up chime, gray screen, then shuts off

I have an eMac that will start up, but once the screen turns gray and the gear starts going around in a circle, it powers off. I tried to read some of the other posts.
    1. I tried unplugging the cord from the computer for a while - no change.
    2. I went into the open firmware and did those three commands - it stayed on long enough to do that and then when it restarted - no change
    3. I did a cmd-option p+r, I forget what that is called, but... - no change
    4. I hooked up my firewire drive and was able to boot from it. I was going to do a netrestore, but the HD was not in the list for target source. What does that mean?
I am a computer teacher new to Macs and any help is greatly appreciated.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Strange; not that Disk Warrior was able to repair your hard drive --- it has an excellent reputation for that --- but that a damaged disk directory (which is what Disk Warrior repairs) would cause the Mac to shut down. The expected failure mode for a severely damaged disk directory would be to see it stuck at the grey startup screen (lesser directory damage can manifest as unvalidly large untrashable files; e.g., a 128 GB file on a 40 GB hard drive).
In your place I'd be working feverishly to make sure all my data is backed up (and verify the backups). Something's not right. If you open Disk Utility, what's shown for the SMART status of the drive?
Opening up the eMac to replace the hard drive is a non-trivial process and requires care, both to avoid the dangerous voltage levels on the CRT yoke and to avoid damaging the power button leads, and of course voids any remaining warrenty, but plenty of people have done so (try Googling "Apple eMac Upgrade Guide"). You can find internal hard drives from 40 GB to over 300 GB at prices from US$80 to $600 but figure somewhere in the $100 - $150 range for the drive.

  • My new Macbook Pro won't start.

Hello. So today i got my new MacBook Pro 13''. I started to use it and competely emptied battery. Now i can't turn it on, it don't charge and my MagSafe charge don't blink. What do i do? It's my first Mac and first problem in first day, it makes me mad.

I'm having a similar problem and I'm ready to explode. I have a huge work deadline tomorrow and can't get the work done. My 4 month old macbook pro won't charge anymore. I'm now on an old pc desperately searching for help.
I switched to my first mac because everyone said how great they were. Since when does a nearly new laptop stop charging? apparently this is a common problem and my sales person did not inform me when I asked specifically about potential bugs. I am furious, frustrated and very unhappy with this. Apple, you suck tonight.
Here's the problem: The light on the magsafe adapter did not work this evening when I tried to charge it. I did nothing out of the ordinary. It was on the desk and I plugged it in as usual.  I spent an hour on the phone and online trying to get apple support to no avail. Apparently their 24/7 line is not 24/7 in Canada?
I cannot remove the battery as the site says, so I'm completely screwed at the mercy of this bullcrap brand. I did everything advised on the site, including checking the SMC and the cord itself. With only 20 minutes left and the battery ticking, I tried to email myself all the files I need, but they're huge and just when it was near finishing, the battery went from 10 to 21 minutes and it shut down.
Now it won't turn on, of course. The little button on the side has only one green light flashing. The adapter does nothing. NO red or green like before.
I am at my cottage and do not have an apple dealer nearby. Who can I scream at for this? All my previous computers could be easliy fixed when things go wrong. Remind me what is so great about this overpriced mean little machine!%^%!^*%&!(
WHY does a NEW laptop that costs a premium have such a fragile adapter / battery?  Is there another adapter I can use to charge it? I'm at my wit's end.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot

Hello all and thanks in advance
    History:
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro. One day I was copying some files and it froze indefinitely. I turned it back on and I got the Grey screen with the question mark file. I put a system restore disc in and opened the disk utility. Strangely, my hard drive (plugged in) did not show up in the menu. I took the hard drive out and took all my important files out onto my iMac. The iMac recognized the hard drive but the Macbook did not. I attempted a system restore for my hard drive and when it was done, it likely restarted and then It went to the beggining of the system restore process again. I shut down the computer because I did not want to do another system restore.
When I turned it back on - the iMac would not get past the apple logo with the spinning wheel. I turned the iMac back on and chose my MacBook hard drive by holding option at startup. The hard drive managed to boot but the system restore did not work, all of my original files were still there. I did the same thing with the iMac harddrive and that also booted. When on my iMac hard drive I went to disk utility and verified disk for my MacBook Hard Drive. It needed repairs, so I repaired it, and it no longer needs repairs.
I plugged the MacBook Pro hard drive into a few windows computers to try to get it to show up but it didn't (Because it's windows DUH) But I just wonder if that caused any issues.
    Problem 1:
Now, the iMac goes to a white screen when it turns on and the only way to boot is to hold option and select the Hard Drive (I checked and it does not need repairs in disk Utility)
How can I make my iMac work without holding option at startup?
    Problem 2:
When I put my MacBook Hard Drive back into my MacBook. My Macbook only turns on for a few seconds and then shuts off, tries to turn on again, and then shuts off in a loop. The Monitor does not turn on AT ALL. The white flashing lite on the front side of the macbook case goes on for the duration of the startup attempt. The Hard Drive is getting power as well as the fan. I am unsure about the other parts.
What is the issue with my MacBook? Any clues?
    Notes:
I also recently got a new charger (60W) and it was for MACBOOK not MACBOOK PRO. I heard this may also cause the battery to die (permanently). However, when I click on the battery indicator on the side of the MacBook, it gives me five green dots.
On the first try to start up, I hear two beeps (unsure if they are from the speakers or the hardware). I know that that is supposed to mean RAM incompatible but the RAM I am using is the RAM that came with. I did remove and reinstall the RAM twice and it still beeps twice (sometimes once).
I have attempted holding option at startup. Holding C at startup (A system restore disc is still in there) and the power doesn't stay on long enough to do anything.
The MacBook has been without its back case for about two weeks now so I hope that didn't break anything.
The Power doesn't remain on long enough to do PRAM or SRC Resets. At least I think so, please correct me if you think I can reset these before the power shuts off (5 or 6 seconds)
P.S. I am okay with turning it into to the Apple Store or Geek Squad or whatever, I just want your opinions first because I honestly trust the internet more than Geek Squad. If you could pin it down to a specific hardware or something that would be GREAT.
THANK YOU! Sorry for the length

I just tried booting the computer, and it BOOTED! I even got to play a little music and start a web browser before the screen went blank and the music stopped abruptly. I think I heard the disk shutting down as well while the keyboard light was still on.
    Now it wont boot again.

    Hello,
I'm having some problems with starting my Macbook Pro
specs of my macbook pro are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP13 (15,4 inch 2,2 ghz)
My macbook pro won't start up anymore, i press the start-up button, it makes the 'krie'-sound then the vans start spinning slowly and then he get's quiet. (screen stays black and the light at the mousepad is on).
    I tried:
-Connect it to power and wait 15 min. then try again -> same result
    - hardware test (installation disc 1 and then press d) -> screen stays black but the disc starts spinning
    - pram-reset, -> same result
the only thing i didn't do is check if my ram-sticks are still in position (i never bought new ram, but maybe it started to get loose)
    what to do?

Just google Nvidia 8600m, and problem, or oh god my screen is dead, and see what comes up.
Once again, if you have a Macbook Pro from mid-late 2007, chances are you have a bad chip. They will replace your logic board, with another bad chip, which may or may not go bad. It's an obvious issue, Nvidia admits they have a problem, and Apple is just going to quietly resolve individual problems.
If your computer turns on but the screen doesn't, it's about 99% likely it's the GPU. Go ahead and let Apple replace it. Oh, and if you have a MBP from that time period and don't have apple care. GET IT NOW. You will most likely have a Black Screen Of Death at some point, and Apple care is cheaper than the repair (which may or may not work). Some people have gone though three logic boards. Good luck.

  • My MacBook Pro won't let me mount my external Hard Drive. Just trying to restore my iTunes library.

My MacBook Pro, less than a year old, started acting weird. I backed everything up, took it in to Best Buy, who sent it out to Apple Repair and they put in a new motherboard.
It's running on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
Now I am trying to put everything back on the computer from my external Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive. MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive.
I tried Disk Utility. I can see the external drive, and did a repair disk and verify disk. Several times. Each time it says "This partition map seems to be ok."
However, I am not able to mount it, as that option is greyed out and i can't select it.
Also, under the Icon for the external hard drive, it has the Macintosh HD Icon (essentially my computer). I tried to restore this way, didn't work.
I need this to mount, as it has all of my itunes stuff on it; dozens of my sons movies, and my entire iTunes library.
PLEASE HEEEEELP!! HOW CAN I MOUNT THIS EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE? Thank you in advance

Try things in this USB/Firewire faq.

  • I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!
