My Macbook Pro wont restart after a system update

I bought a macbook pro in November 2012.  I did a the most recent mountion lion system update.  It will only shutdown by holding the button.  When booted, after entering my password for the user, the mac will run but the screen is black.  The commands or trackpad do not respond.
What do I do?

First you should try to back up anything in your hard drive that is really essential, like files you can't afford to lose. Then I'd try to boot into recovery mode, which you do by restarting and holding down command R (I think. I've gone to bed so I'm doing this from my phone. But you can google recovery mode. ) once you have booted up in recovery mode, use disc utility (it will be very apparent where that is) and repair your hard drive and permissions, and then try to start up normally. The fact that the computer did start up in safe mode is pretty good evidence that there is a problem with some third-party software that you have previously installed, so this may require a trial and error process to find out what that software is that is causing the problem.

  • Macbook Pro keeps crashing after airport Atheros update (none before)

I installed the update for Airport Atheros last week and I consistently had Kernel Panics. I thought it was the bad ram that I just installed. I then took the ram out and reinstalled Mac OSX completely. I ran all the software updates including the airport atheros one. Everything was running well then when I clicked on the wifi icon on the menu bar, i was hit by a kernel panic. I am so frustrated because I spent all night to restore Mac OSX and my personal data.
So as you know, I never had a kernel panic related to airport card on my 90 days old macbook pro santa rosa prior to the update.
Do you know anyway to revert the airport atheros update? I do not want to go through the hassles of reinstalling everything again.
    Thanks for your helps.

  • Macbook pro wont sleep after ram upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 17" Macbook pro late 2011. I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb last week and now I having trouble with sleep. When the laptop goes to sleep it always to seems to go into hibernation mode. When I open the lid I can only wake the computer by holding the power button for around 7 secs and then it does a restore from the HD. I've tried a PRAM + SMC reset. Also tested the ram and everything seems good. Below is the output from pm set, the console after hibernation restore (filtered for the word 'sleep') and the memtest. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi fatlinesofcode,
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • My Macbook Pro keeps restarting after upgrading it to Yosemite!

Hi, I have Macbook Pro 13-inch early 11, and the only thing that I have upgraded is the ram to 16Gb.
When I start upgrading the ox to Yosemite I headed to few problems (like it was stoked on 1 more minute for over 30 min so i had to restart my mac and start the installation again and again the same problem but this time i wated for 45 mins and finally it was installed. When for the first time it came to that screen so i can choose my user name and type my password nothing worked so i had to restart the mac AGAIN! Finally it worked but way slower than the last ox.)
After a day and two my mac started to restart it self for over 10 times in like 4 hours! It didnt mater if i was working on something using different apps or just listing to music, or just by closing the mac all of sudden i would hear the restart sound for no reason! So now it got better and it not like over 10 times in few hours but it still does several times a day specially when i close my mac. After the restart the only thing that tells me that your mac was restarted due to a problem and do you wanna report it and etc.
I would really appreciate if someone helps me with this stupid problem cause it really is annoying me and im keep loosing my work in middle of working on them.
    Thanks!
Btw, im running bootcamp also but i dont use it that much but i beleive i had that problem when im ruuning the boot camp also!

I'm not sure if this is what you wanted though

  • My macbook pro keeps restarting after i put it to sleep.

I have a Macbook pro 15" retina display.  I began to have this problem after i installed Yosemite, I put it to sleep and after 20 minutes aproximately, it restarts. Sounds, light, everything.
At first i tought it happened only when i left the screen open, but Even with the screen closed it restarts. I put it to sleep and then, suddenly, i heard the sound of restarting and i verified it when i opened the screen and there was a message that it had occured a problem and the system had to restart.
    It didn´t happened with Mavericks.
    Any suggestions? please help me.
    Thank you

  • Macbook Pro needs restart after sleep...

My Macbook Pro has starting doing this thing where the screen will go darker and it will tell me I need to restart by holding the power button. It happens pretty often when the computer wakes up from being in sleep mode. What's the deal?

Here's a console log detailing a wake sequence with failed Bluetooth and USB.

  • MacBook Pro needs restart after wake up

I recently upgraded the hard drive (to 1TB) and RAM (to 8GB) of my late 2008 MacBook Pro, as well as performed a fresh install of Yosemite. My system has been running pretty fast and well; however, when I put my notebook to sleep and wake it up, it won't run programs. Files won't save, programs will quit before they start, and web pages won't load, and this is after wake up. When I restart the computer after this, it returns to normal working order. I can shut down and restart when I need to, but I would like to be able to use sleep/wakeup when I can (which was working fine when I had Mavericks and the older HDD and memory). I was wondering if this was a problem with Yosemite, as I have been seeing some issues with this functionality with the new OS, or if it is a problem with my new hardware. Thanks in advance.

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please read the whole article carefully (some of it is hidden by disclosure triangles) and don't skip any of the steps, including the ones under the heading "Additional troubleshooting." If you don't understand any of the steps, ask for guidance.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
              Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked
Put hard disks to sleep when possible
    Step 4
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
    Step 5
This and the next step must be taken as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
    Step 6
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down.
You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • MacBook Pro wont start after 10.8.3 update

So I tired installing the 10.8.3 update from the app store  and every time I did it I got the response that it wasn't downloaded properly, first on bad Internet at my house, then at school I used the really fast Internet and it was the same problem. Then I came here found that a bunch of people had the same problem, so I downloaded the combo update from apple.com from a recommendation by someone here
Now its one big shitstorm, after taking a half hour to install on my MacBook Pro ( its a 13 inch i got last august so its brand new),  during the install I was on chrome and it kept freezing about 75% of the install complete I tried to shut every program running, that just froze the entire computer for about 5 minutes, let it finish and it said it needed to restart. It said that something couldn't close and it needed to be force quit, so I did that and let it restart.
It turned off, and started the loading screen with the apple and the gear below it spinning, then it froze, a half hour later it didn't change, i shut it off by holding down the power button and tried to start it again now it will go until the screen with the apple and spinning gear comes and then it will just shut itself off after about 2 minutes, tried safe mode, the bar at the bottom will load about 40% then it shuts off,
What do I do now, anything on my own? can i try and take it into the apple store or did I probably loose everything?

It sounds like your internal drive is failing, or has failed. What backups do you have?

  • New Macbook Pro Wont turn after discharge

    Hello everyone,
I just purchased my 3rd mac in the past 2 years, yeah that's how hooked I am, now windows free 99% and love it...
My brand new macbook pro has a very annoying issue.. if I use it on battery power and it discharges completely I have to wait up to 15 minutes after connecting it to power to be able to turn it back on again. this is so frustrating as I am sometimes doing some work and have to get away from the computer for a few minutes.. If it discharges within that time and I come back to continue my work guess what.. I need to wait all this time even after connecting it to power to resume my work...
Does anyone has the same problem? is this normal? I've searched google and haven't found the same problem on anyone else unless they are OK with that and just don't report it... I've never had this problem with any other laptop I own and is extremely annoying, my wife's macbook doesn't do that, if it discharges and goes to sleep you can just connect the magsafe adapter and it will come right back up.
your comments will be greatly appreciated.

My MBP has always come back immediately. So has my old iBook. I rarely discharge my battery completely, but will do so on occasion to calibrate it. But I have never had the problem you describe. My personal opinion is that the long delay is definitely not normal.
Out of curiosity, next time your Mac shuts down like this, remove the battery and see if it will start up immediately. If it does, you could possibly have a faulty battery. If it still takes a lot of time to start up with the battery removed, there is something else wrong. I have never heard of anything quite like this. Since you didn't mention excessive heat, that wouldn't be a factor.
Be sure you can reproduce the condition for the Apple genius. They have to see it to be able to do anything. Go in a bit early with a low battery and run it out in the store, so you can show them exactly what it is doing.
    Good luck!

  • My Macbook Pro wont boot after upgrading to SSD, A ? Mark on Folder appears

    Hello all,
I just put in a new SSD into my mid 2012, 13" macbook pro. This is the exact SSD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=77394 89&tab=7&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_mmc=Email-_-WebletMain-_-WEBLET03ORDER-_-Deals &utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_lm=noahbragg@cedar ville.edu
I swapped out my optical drive and put in the SSD using this tutorial, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Dual +Hard+Drive/13787 Everything seemed to go fine and i had no problems. But when I tried to start up the computer it stayed on a gray screen and a foler with a question mark on it, showed up blanking. I have looked all over for the internet for the answer, I have tried to reset the PRAM but it did nothing. I then tried to select what drive i wanted to boot from by holding the option key when i booted, but when the options came up, SSD or old harddrive did not come up as a way to boot up. There were some internet options to recover but they did not work.
The SSD has nothing on it at this point, but my plan was to boot up using the original HD and then clone it over to the SSD, but ovbiously i cant even find the HD to boot to. I have seen that people are having troubles with booting to their SSD because of the new mavericks update, but i am just trying to boot to my original HD at this point.
I also considered that maybe i possibly damaged the HD cables through static electricty, but when i searched more about it i learned that i should have heard snap or felt a jolt. None of these things happened when i installed the SSD. So i beleive that the hard drive or SSD are not broken in any way.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how i can fix this? Need my computer very badly! thanks in advance.

I also forgot to mention that after the first time i tried to boot, it went to the normal screen where it wanted me to put in my apple id password. but the loading wheel was just spinning the whole time. so i turned off the computer and tried again. thats when the question mark folder came up and kept coming up everytime after that.

  • Windows 7 x64, MacBook Pro, frequent CHKDSK after HDD firmware update

Hello, I have been having filesystem problems on my Windows 7 partition since the HDD related firmware update (the latest Performance update) was released and installed onto this mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
The HDD is a 500 GB 7200 RPM model, but it never gave me any troubles under OS X before the "fix" and I know other users had intermittent problems with the HDD on their MacBook Pro's related to the HDD making noises and pausing.
The fix was released, I installed it and I started seeing my first problem in Windows 7 x64 a few days after... I cleanly shut the OS down, but when I booted it back it asked me to perform a coherency check to the Filesystem... I thought that the problem was related to the fact that I was using the RC1 build of Windows 7... although that problem never manifested itself in the weeks before the Performance Update (HDD firmware fix) was installed and Windows 7 x64 RC1 had been on there and used frequently.
I recently purchased Windows 7 retail a few days ago and after a bit of trouble-free operation I started having problems again... always shutting the PC down carefully and I was asked to run the CHKDSK utility at boot twice already.
    What to do?

    Hi there,
I have a different experience. I installed Windows 7 before the "performance update 1.0" came out. I actually experienced the chkdsk launch problem with Windows 7. I had done repartitioning and clean-install several times but cannot solve the problem. So I tried to install XP and Vista on my MBA (Mid 2009 with SSD) and found that these two OS doesn't introduce such problem.
To be honest, I'm not sure which caused such problem, Windows 7, a bootcamp driver, or EFI. But I'm sure that CHKDSK in Windows 7 has an obvious bug that needs to be patched (memory leak and maybe this problem as well). So now I'm using Windows Vista SP2. And I'm happy with Vista SP2 (seems to become faster and stable now).
    Cheer,

  • My iMac wont restart after my last update alumni keyboard

Please help, I am using my MacBook for this, my iMac will not restart after installing the last update, alumni keyboard....., after restarting, pushing the start button, all i see for hours, is the apple logo with the little circle spinning under the logo, please help, i already, disconnected, unplugged everything, used my original keyboard and mouse instead of my bluetooth, but nothing works, even ,power on while pushing option button etc. Anyone else know of this problem. Thanks in advance!

The long tone is an indication that a firmware update is installing. Do you get a progress bar at the bottom of you screen after letting the power button go?
Have you reset the PRAM? (cmdalt+PR when you restart the machine)
Also repair permissions when the machine is up and running.

As a extra precaution I would copy the user file folders of Music, Documents, Pictures etc to another external drive and disconnect, just in case.
Always maintain TWO backups of your data at all times, since your messing with one, you need another until your back at two again.
