My MacBook quit on me :(

I was watching a video on hulu when my computer just shut off with no warning. The power chord was plugged in but did not have the light indicating that it was charging and my Macbook would not turn back on. I bought it in probably February of 2010. I took it in to an iMechanic but he could not figure out what was wrong. He said if he had to guess, He'd say it was the logic board but wasn't for sure. Any body have an idea of what it could be?

Try resetting the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

The startup disk may need repairing. Follow these instructions. You will need your install disc.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)

Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.

  • My Macbook quits when loading but I can get it to boot up if I hold down the "On" button.

In addition, it also quits when in operation for no reason and occasionally the prompt to shut down appears. The machine is four years old and the battery life isn't great anymore.

  • HT3964 connected new external monitor to macbook pro, was working but now have no power, black screen in laptop. monitor purchased with advice from tech and set up also. Worked fine for an hour and then quit

Have just connected a viewsonic external monitor to macbook pro 10.6.8, had everything up and running fine for about an hour then the macbook quit. No power (ws running off power source) Have I killed my macbook? Help!

    Aha, all is good.
    I went to Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays
    and to home/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays
and deleted all SyncMaster.icc files. I did leave behind one SyncMaster file in the home/../Displays which had an old date and I new was ok.
Rebooted, plugged in SyncMaster, and a new icc file was automatically created in the /Library/../Displays folder.
    My display works normally, now.

  • 2560x1440 quit on macbook with miniDP to DP

My macbook quit displaying 2560x1440. It is a late 2009 13 inch notebook with the NVidia GeForce 9400M graphics.
I connected the display to another mac to learn that the display and cable worked perfectly. Therefore, the problem was with my macbook.
The fix: I reset the PRAM and reset the SMC. It was the SMC that was confused since the display did not work at high resolution after resetting the PRAM. After the reset of the SMC, the macbook displayed the choice of 2560x1440 and the display worked at 2560x1440 as it had before.
    Note:
To reset the PRAM: Shut down the macbook. Hold option-command-p-r  to get computer to reboot again. Release the keys to allow the computer to power on.
To reset the SMC: There are different scenarios depending on what mac you have. For notebooks with non-removable batteries, connect and make sure that power is on with the mag safe power cord. Shut down the notebook. Press shift-opt-ctrl-poweron. Release these. Press power on button to start the notebook with a new SMC.
    This worked for me.
PS: Connection to the display was via a miniDP to DP cable. (note that the large end on that cable has prongs that prevent it from leaving the socket in the back of the monitor. This made it very difficult to remove the cable. I removed the prongs with a file. The connector does not need the prongs, and I often need to disconnect the cable.)

It may be a bad cable.

  • MacBook Pro restarts unexpectedly after removing mini displayport-DVI adapter

    Hi all,
I did a clean install of Mavericks a little while back. Since then I have been noticing an issue with my Mid-2009 17" MacBook auto-restarting, and have reduced it when I remove my mini displayport-DVI adapter.
I usually work with my macbook closed, connected to a Dell 24" external monitor connected via DVI. When removing the adapter the macbook quite often goes to the grey screen telling me that the machine must force restart. It is becoming really frustrating.
Anyone know about this issue or found a workaround?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

  • MacBook (13inch-late 2009) Heat/fan problem?? (2.26Ghz, white unibody)

Hello guys, I have, maybe a problem with a unibody MacBook 2.26Ghz.
Many times i have noticed that it is quite silently with his fan, even if some process are taking lot of CPU. For example, my MacBook Pro 13inch mid 2009 is not so silent, cause the fans runs faster. For example, now that I'm writing on it, the CPU temp is 55 degree and fans runs at 2500rpm. I think could be normal, even if most of the times I would prefer it would not cross 2000rpm for low temp.
By the way, interested about the fan speed of this macbook unibody I have started a hard process that was taking lot of CPU (A VLC video mkv playing at very-very-very high quality). Around 90 % of both cores was used, so the temp started to gone up as normal.
The strange thing, is that even if the CPU was running from 50, then 60 then 70 then 80 and over degree, the fan speed was still at 2000rpm. The fans was not taking care of this high temperature, all was normal. The video played for many minutes, and nothing happened, the fan was still at 2000rpm, some rpm more, some rpm less.
On my Mac Book Pro, the same process cause an increase of fan speed quite after the CPU starts to get stressed at high percentage.
I have manually tested the fan of this macbook, and it is able to go at faster speed, the classic 6200rpm can be reached if someone ask it to run at that speed.
So, now I ask you guys, does is normal that this macbook quite ignore this hard temperature and not start to cool the CPU on this high degrees? Does I have to wait more for fan speed (i have waited at last 5-10 minutes)?
My fear is that the heat could damage the CPU or cause any other hardware problems...
    let me know please
    thanx!!
    Andrea

I have the same Macbook type. You can try resetting the System Management Controller. The details are in this link:

  • ADR3 on MacBook cannot see clients' user name

I have just installed ARD 3.2 admin on a MacBook running 10.4.10, and it cannot access two servers on our network, one running 10.3.9 and the other with 10.4.9. Both have the 3.2.1 client installed. The admin console sees the clients but shows that they do not have ARD user names or passwords available, and so is unable to connect to clients. Yet I also have ARD 2.2 admin running on a different, older Mac (10.4.10) on the same network in another building, and it allows me to connect to these two servers without any problem. On both admin computers, I log in locally with the exact same account name (both full and shortcut names) and password, so they should be recognized the same on the client machines. Tried deleting clients from list on the MacBook, quitting, and relaunching--no effect.

Sorry - let me start over...
Computer 1 has internal HD, and 2 external FW HDs each with 3 partitions. When everything is fired up, I have 7 volumes mounted on the desktop of Computer 1. Computer 1 has User 1, the only account on that machine. Computer 1 is connected to Airport extreme base station via ethernet.
Computer 2 has user 2, the only account on that machine. It is wirelessly connected to the airport extreme.
I used to be able to connect from Computer 2 to Computer 1 using User 1's account info, and then chose one of the 7 volumes AND user 1 (total of 8 items listed) to mount on the desktop of Computer 2 as a network item. I could mount as many as I wanted.
Now, when I apple-K to connect from Computer 2 to Computer 1 and use user 1's account info, I am presented with a list of 2 items to mount: user 1 and a folder called postfix (for which I have no permissions).
I think this situation is exactly the same as Roastaman's problem entitled "No HD volumes, just users. What's up?"

  • Leopard quitting applications.

i would like to know or perhaps understand why my macbook quit some software while I am running others. Here is the picture: I closed the lid, while I had open microsoft word, mail, safari. Then, after while, I try to use the computer, but the microsoft word just quit. This happen with my dictionary two days ago while using the word and iTunes at the same time.
I up to date to Leopard last Saturday. It has something related with it?
    Thanks a lot,
    M

    Hi guys ...
For me over the past years these steps have solved 98% of problems ...
    1. Repair your disk with Disk Utility booting from your install disk. Before you continue with the install... a menu will appear at the top showing Disk Utility ...Don't bother verifying ... just run the disk repair ...
    2. Repair permissions from Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder .....
    3. Clean your caches with something like Cocktail
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10909/cocktail
... Go to Files/Caches/ choose system and all user and internet caches. Then press clear. Make sure all applications are closed before doing this and restart after ....
Leopard runs all the cron scripts automatically ... I use Macaroni to repair permissions on a weekly basis ... but Cocktail will do this too .. manually.
When you clear your caches the apps will run slower the first time and some will respond as if being used for the first time ...
    Happy computing!

  • Macbook pro late 13 frequent hard freezes with the rainbow wheel

Ive been getting this issue on my macbook quite frequently now; dont think its hardware related and occurs randomly at any time up to 3 times a day where the computer will slowly begin to freeze.
It (usually) begins by my browser not being able to access a website (just a white screen in browser section), at this point im able to alt tab between apps for some time but eventually everything will hard freeze, same with the cursor which will turn into a rainbow wheel and also eventually freeze.
Can only resolve this by power button for 6 secs (good thing it starts up in 5 seconds)
Any help?? Kind of new to macs Thanks!
    MacBook Pro
    Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Final Cut Express On Macbook 13" core duo ?

Im thinking of buying a macbook quite soon, the white 2.0 ghz one with 1gb of ram and 100gb HDD but i was wondering if they can run Final cut express as i do alot of video editing and i want editing on the go with the macbook, but i am unsure whether it will work or not because of the macbooks graphics engine,?????/??
    many thanks, lewis

You need to be really careful with reviews like this. You might want to note that this review only shows rendering and encoding which does not require the graphics processor. It does not elaborate on the MacBook's performance when it comes to actually using Final Cut Pro which does require the graphics processor to peform at a certain level. Notice the lack of comparison with things like FCPs real time effects and the like?

  • My macbook won't open firefox pdf files

About a week ago, my macbook quit opening internet pdf files.  I checked for new software updates but it hasen't worked.  Please help!!!  No error message shows up, just a blank screen.

    Hi...
    Quit Firefox.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen, click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go
Move the Adobe PDF browser plugin (or just PDF browser plugin) from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Firefox. See if that worked...

  • I've tried everything - the macbook is dead

eh probably 2 months ago, the macbook quit booting up. since then i've tried everythign on this site: PRAM, single-user mode, safe mode, booting off the install dvds, replace the hard drive, try different RAM configurations, if it's on this site i've tried it.
The one issue I have is that I'm in the military and I'm spending the next year in Korea. Apple would like me to ship the laptop in, it's under warranty, i appreciate the effort. However in all their wisdom, Apple will not ship to APO/FPO addresses, the only way overseas military get's mail.
I'll find a way to get this piece of junk to work. But I will not recommend apple to my friends in the future. I'm extremely dissapointed in the company and will gladly revert back to a windows system that I can fix on my own and that come from companies who will support their users no matter where they may be.

    Hi mercha,
If you said that you will be spending your tour of duty next year, I believe the apple service won't take that long to fix your macbook.
And other poster also give good suggestion by visit Korea's apple store or your family here can sent it to your base as soon as it is done repairing.
And honestly we glad to help more but tired of people threaten to go back to windows system when they don't get what they want with apple. Feel free to go back to windows system without need to proclaim it.
Do try any window systems pc maker that willing to take the service here in USA and ship it to other part of the globe, I doubt there will be any.
    Peace out.
