My macbook's display is Widescreen, so why not my display it on my TV?

I just got an Insignia 19" HDTV (LCD) and has good resolution, i'm going to it via mini-DVI to VGA adapter.
The thing is, I can't get it to display widescreen on the HDTV. It is a perfectly square picture, I don't understand why. I try changing the settings on my TV to Wide but it just stretches everything. I want a non-stretched widescreen image on my HDTV. I have the resolution set at the max for the TV (1024x768) that the macbook has to offer. Why something relatively close to widescreen?
Please help.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   60 GB, 1.25 GB RAM, 1.83 GHz

Yeah, that was a lot of gobbledegook to absorb. "Aiming at brevity, I become obscure." Sorry for that.
Anyway, download and install SwitchRes X using the previously provided link. Be sure and download the Control Panel version, not the full version. Control panel is an unfortunate moniker because it is actually a stand-alone OS X application and not a control panel as in the yesteryears of Mac OS 9 and before.
Anyway, once it is installed, connect the TV to the MacBook if it isn't already and double-click on the SwitchRes X icon to run the app. It should open into its main window. At the top of the window will be a pop-up labeled "Settings of:" where you should make sure you have selected the TV and not the built-in MacBook display. Then, in the selection bar below with choices for Display, Active, Common and Custom, make sure that Display is selected (highlighted). On the right you should see a button labeled "Export DDC". Clicking on it will cause a standard dialog box to pop up asking you to choose a location to store the file being created. Take note of where the file is being sent and also the file name. Click OK. Next, find the file and open it with TextEdit. Copy and paste the file data in a reply message to this one and I will help you read the data.
EDID is just driver data. In the Windows world the display driver, which is just simple software, would typically be included on a CD or else something a user would download from a website and install. But the Mac takes a slightly different approach, and lately Windows has also been using the Mac approach, whereby the driver data is taken directly from the attached device (monitor) over an imbedded data channel in the video cable. But TVs don't necessarily use EDID, or if they do, the implementation sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. Without and driver data, the Mac is at a loss how to treat the display, so often you just get very generic resolution choices within Display Preferences since that Mac lacks having any good information about the attached display. I'm suspecting that is what is going on here...the TV you own probably has a lame EDID implementation. But the good news is, since the manufacturer claims 1440 x 900 support, this EDID limitation should be something that can be overcome.

That model in general is supported, but make sure you meet the other requirements listed here: http://apple.com/osx/specs, such as enough free disk space. If you do, please describe in more detail what happens when you try to download 10.9, including any error messages.
Also, be sure you're downloading the full installer, which should be done from the App Store.

  • Resolution of MacBook Pro display - always this fuzzy??

I should have done my homework, but...
I'm very sensitive to the fuzziness of the MacBook Pro display (especially the nearly grey and poorly defined letters on Word) and, to tell the truth, it's making my stomach turn and giving me a headache. I just received this computer through work, can't return it, and I'm stuck with it for three years now. what can I do or purchase to make the display CRYSTAL CLEAR (as in laser print quality)?
Will an external monitor help? Which one?
How can my iPod touch look so brilliant and this $2,500 laptop so archaic?
Thanks for any and all help,

The reason your iPod Touch looks sharper is that it has a much higher pixel density than the MBP. Your iPod's screen is 163 ppi (pixels per inch) versus 110 ppi for the MBP. However, if it looks very fuzzy, I would agree with the other responder that your resolution isn't set to the screen's native resolution (1440 x 900) or that you are zoomed in (press control and scroll down on your mouse scroll wheel or two-fingered scroll on with the trackpad).

  • Using an LCD TV as the Macbook Pro display

    Hey
I am trying to use a Samsung LCD Tv as the display monitor for my 15 in. Macbook Pro display. I have a DVI cord going from my laptop to a DVI-RGB adapter which is plugged into the LCD Tv monitor, but nothing shows up on the tv and the display is still on the laptop. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Assuming your adapter is valid, you try "Detect Displays" in System Prefs/Displays. Some people adjust the OS to show a monitor icon in the menu bar, near the clock, and you can access this from there also. If the Mac still detects no external display, suspect the cabling.
I really question your DVI-RGB adapter, though. That would be highly unusual - are you sure it's not DVI-SVGA, or DVI-component? Do you have the brand and model? I have run my Samsung TV from my MBP just fine with a SVGA cable and DVI-SVGA adapter.

I connect my macbook pro to an Epson wireless projector. The macbook can see the projector wirelessly and the image on the macbook is displayed on the projector. However on system ref., the arrangement tab does not show and thus cannot have multiple view.
I am trying to project Pro Presenter on the Epson projector such that I have the detail screen on the macbook and only the screen I want people to see on the projector display. This has not been possible because the arrangement tab on the Display section of the System Preference is not showing. If i tried to search for the arangement, it comes back with the message that there is not other source detected, hence the arrangement tab is not showing.
I have also tried to connect the Epson directly to the Macbook but it still the same result, so its not because it is a wireless connection. Can someone advise me jhow to go around this problem. I have used windows before and it is very easy to extend ptojection on windows, but this system seems to be frustrating to me.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Dou you have an ATO Graphics card? I used to have a similar problem on a Windows machine with an ATI X850XT. I tried taking out and re-installing the card. This fixed the problem for a while. I came back, tried the same, problem solved.
Don't know what causes it, though... But I don't think it's software related. Could be I'm wrong, though...
