My MacBook shuts off when I plug my external drive in.

Whenever I plug my external drive into my MacBook Air, it shuts down all of a sudden. It works perfectly normal before. What should I do?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Air forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

With the iPod still connected, try resetting it by pressing and holding both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • MacBook shuts off when power cord is disconnected

2007 White MacBook shuts off (not shutdown) when power cord is removed. Battery shows 98% charge. Any ideas? I plug AC power back in and it reboots when start button pushed. This problem just started tonight.
    HELP!

Ronan... in your case, it looks like it's just time for a new battery. Your battery should hold a full charge for up to about 300 cycles. At that point, you should expect a decline in the charge capacity. As your battery has over 600 cycles, it sounds like it's had a good life. As you've had your MacBook for less than two years, it sounds like you are possibly using more cycles than necessary. You should try to use your MacBook while plugged in the majority of the time... but occasionally use it on battery (going through one or two cycles a week). A full cycle is a full charge and discharge. For example, if your battery is at 100% and you let it discharge to 90% and then you charge it back up to 100%, that is 1/10th of a cycle. You would need to do that 10 times to equal one cycle. If you started at 100% and let your battery discharge to 50% and then charged it up to full, that would be 1/2 cycle... doing this twice would equal one cycle. The number of cycles is the primary indicator of the life of your battery. It sounds like you are using your MacBook mostly on battery (with over 600 cycles in less than two years). After you replace your battery, try to run it plugged in for the majority of the time if possible. Many people are mistakenly under the impression that they should fully discharge their battery before charging it. This is not the case with Lithium Ion/Polymer batteries. This was the case with Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (much older rechargeable battery technologies). It seems many people still feel that the memory effect of the older battery technologies applies to newer battery technologies. Just the opposite is true.

  • Macbook shuts off when battery hits 30%

I have been using my Macbook Pro for two months without incident. However, over the last three days, the laptop dies when the battery hits 30%. It's very wierd. It always happens at exactly 30%, so it is reproducable. It doesn't go to sleep, or give a warning message, just shuts off. I have to plug it in to get it going.
If I keep it plugged in, there's no problem. I have reset the PRAM and PMU with no effect.
I'm pretty sure its a hardware problem. I have Win XP installed under Boot Camp, and the same thing happens in that OS. Is it a bad battery? Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I am facing a similar problem. I have tried calibrating the battery and resetting the PMU to no avail. The interesting thing is that when I calibrate and charge the battery, the maximum battery time available is 35 minutes. A month ago it was 3:40. In addition, some times I get a message when I am 50% that I should plugin the laptop immediately, and then the battery keeps working 'normally'.
I think I will need to get a new battery from apple.

  • Phone shut off when I plugged in charger

I was listennig to music and reading a book on my phone and happened to plug in a charger. Now I understand that it is unwise to that but its a fairly new charger. Only a couple of months old and when I plugged in the charger my phone shut completely off and I've taken out the batter and sim card and micro and left it alone for about a minute or so and plugged everything in and the original charger to the phone and now it wont turn on and it's been about 20 minutes.

Chany0690, it sounds like you've done quite a bit to get your phone to work again and I want to help as well! When you said you plugged in a charger, was this the charger that came with the phone? If not, where did you get this charger? Was there a shock or anything when you plugged in the phone? Sometimes removing the battery a second time and holding the power button for about 10 seconds will work as well.
Another thing to try is to take battery out, plug phone to USB port on a computer (without battery), computer should beep once phone is recognized, now insert battery and try to power phone on.
Let me know if you need further assistance after this.

  • My PC shuts off when I plugged iPhone or iPad

    Hello,
Since two weeks I have a big problem with my computer.

  • MBP shuts off when not plugged in (yet battery is fully charged)

This is the 3rd time I've suffered from this problem.
The problem lasts for about two days then seems to go away for a week or so.
When I leave the MBP charging for a few hours, then disconnect the power, it almost immediately shuts off (no warning, no error, no sleeping).
While disconnected, if I try and turn it on, I hear the boot sound, but then it shuts off again - the monitor never turns on.
If I connect it back to the power it turns on and boots fine.
My parents also have a brand new MBP, and I can avoid the problem by swapping batteries.
I therefore think my battery is faulty.
What else can I do to test the battery functions?
    Thanks,
    -Vijay

This started happening to me a few wks ago. My MB Pro would just go blank and shut down for no reason, while using it unhooked from the power cord. I could restart it, but it would shut down within a few minutes. The battery showed 60 to 70 %. Looking up on this discussion, I found numerous others who have had this problem. I called Apple support, but could not get to a person, they work only 6AM to 6PM in the US. So, today, I took it in to the Genius Bar, here in San Jose, CA. His first reaction was, Oh, you do not have Applecare. I told him about the battery problem reports on this discussion. He feigned ignorance of the problem. Next minute, he turned to me and said he will replace the battery free of charge! My MB Pro is 17 months old, and I do not have Applecare. So, all you people with this 'sudden death syndrome' please go into the store, or call Apple and claim what is due.

  • Time Capsule acts weird when i plug my external drive into it

whenever i plug my toshiba canivo 1tb external drive into my time capsule it stops even letting me access the time capsule period in finder and in airport utility it keeps asking for the password even though i know its correct! works fine when drive isnt plugged in and ive been using it with the tc for a while it just started doing this tonight..any suggestions?

You must use a powered hub.. the internal power supply is not able to supply power to the USB drive.
Even if you have an external power supply on the USB drive you might still need a powered hub.. it is way under powered.

  • FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in external drive

    Hello, All:
FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in an external memory card from my Nikon camera. This also happens regardless of which USB port I plug it in to. It didn't happen when I installed Leopard two weeks ago, but happens all the time now.
Interestingly, the desktop icons (hard drives and files) DO show up when I open any software program and try to open up a file. The hard drives and files show up in the Open File windows.
    Thank you,

THANK YOU! I've been having the same problem, and the solution you linked to worked perfectly for me. Somehow, my computer's sharing name had been deleted. Once I put that back in the file sharing preference I was able to reconnect my external drive without all Hades breaking loose.
This problem came on the heels of an aborted attempt to use a new Time Capsule (not ready for prime time) which I had to drive 50 miles to take back and replace with a new WD My Book -and I was afraid I was going to have to repeat the trip to take it back as well.

  • How do I keep my computer from shutting off when I plug in my iphone

What do I need to do to keep my computer from shutting down each time I plug in my iphone?

        Hello goldeeneyes!
I'd love to tell you how to adjust your screen settings. Keep in mind that a longer screen timeout may drain your battery significantly, so you may wish to change it back when you are not using your knitting application.
Please go to Settings>Display and change the Sleep to a longer period of time. Happy creating!

  • Macbook shuts off when I'm listening to music or watching video

It shuts completely off maybe a minute into music or video. It seems to get really hot. Unfortunately against my better judgement I didn't buy the AppleCare plan. Am considering selling it if fixing it doesn't make sense, but I don't know what to call the problem. It seems like a hardware issue? But I don't know what kind.

    Hi...
It should not get that hot under 'normal' use.
    First try a SMC reset.
Also note that it's a known issue that when attaching the magsafe connector and then within a few seconds opening the lid or in reverse, it can heat up for no aparent reason. Closing and reopening the lid should solve that.
A workaround for this is to wait ca. 15-30 sec. after opening the lid, before connecting the magsafe.

    ronicr76,
First it would be helpful if you post the exact model, year and OS version you have.
    > The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed<
So that light is the sleep indicator and tells us that the laptop is going to sleep when you close the lid. That would be normal behavior so the machine is still working. Possibly you're experiencing a backlight failure. With the machine supposedly "on" use a flashlight to carefully examine the screen. Do you see the desktop? Yes? machine is still running and something is wrong with the backlight.
You should immediately backup your computer or at the very least pull vital files off. With the computer hooked to another Mac (The way this is done depends on the exact MacBook, E.g.FireWire 800 to FireWire 800.) Then you restart the computer and hold the "t" key down. This puts your MacBook into "target mode":

Once your files are off try an SMC reset:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Are you able to get the backlight back on by opening and closing the display? Yes? Broken backlight cable refer to qualified service place. Even if it doesn't come on and you can still see the desktop with a flashlight it is still probably the backlight. Could be the a backlight problem also.
