My MacBook slow after startup then is fast later

i have an interesting problem. when i restart my macbook or turn it off and then back on, it is kind of slow at first. it doesn't open native applications or anything fast but after like 10 minutes of opening applications its back to being super fast. what could be the issue? i have installed smalldog 2gig memory in it.

This could be caused by that fact that even though the OS has loaded, programs are still being loaded in the background.
Also, once you open up an application it can become cached and opening for the second time will be faster.
All in all I would say this is normal behaviour. If you don't like it you should look at what Applications you have running when you start up your computer and then get rid of them - for example Norton AV can slow stuff down like this: mine is disabled unless I think there is a threat.

  • Macbook slow at startup After Update

Hi I am new to Mac's well I just updated to 10.4.9 and now my startup speed is slower than before also when opening app's. Well I emptied the Caches in home Library, Hd Library and system Library. But it still keep's being slow. I think I will do Disc Utility the on the Macbook Disc.
    Please help

    Hi Macbook91.
Whatever the problem is here, I don’t see how you’re going to solve it clearing the caches. The purpose of caches is precisely to speed up the access to commonly used data...
It may sometimes be necessary to delete some caches while troubleshooting a specific problem because they may become corrupt, but caches shouldn’t be deleted as part of regular maintenance procedures.
You may want to read the “Maintenance myths” section of the following article for more information on this:

  • Macbook slow on startup after installing Leopard

I installed Leopard on release and now everytime I start my mac it takes a lot longer to boot up. Once it gets past the apple screen I then get a plain blue screen for up to about 10 seconds before the wallpaper and all my apps appear. Once thats done its ok.
With Tiger it seemed a lot quicker to boot. Has anyone else noticed this? My macbook is only 5 months old and doesn't have a lot on it either.

hey, i have a macbook 5 months old and i am having the same problem at the startup , so it seems to be normal , check my post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1206170&tstart=0

  • Macbook slower after upgrading to Mavericks

Hello, I'm owner of a Macbook Pro MD322LL/A and I haven't had any issues with Lion (the OS that came with) but after upgrading to Mavericks it changed a lot:
    Lower performance.
Transitions in the launchpad are laggy (and also buggy).
    Start up time increased.
Anyway, that's why I want to make a clean install of Mavericks. Because I think that all these things happens because of making an upgrade rather than a fresh install (same thing occured with my iPhone and iOS 7, but that's another story )
    And my question is:
Is it risky to format the Hard Drive and install the OS again? And do I need to do some things before doing it?(in order to keep the license and else)
Assuming that I need just to format the hardrive and install the OS X, isn't it a "simple" of doing it? (like Cmd+R but making a clean install)
    Thanks!

I suppose you could do that with Internet Recovery as well. You should not have an issue in terms of losing your OS license, as long as you use the same Apple ID that you have been using with your Mac.
I didn't understand the license thing, but if I erase the disk and perform a clean install from a bootable USB that license won't lost am I right?
I made a bootable USB of Mavericks just using this simple command:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/SINTITULO --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
What do I need to do now? go to disk utility select erase, and then install using the USB?

When do I need to do that? after erasing the hard drive with disk utility?

  • MBP slow after startup after Time Machine restore process.

    Hello all,
I have a 2.4 ghz MBP and was dual booting Ubuntu hardy and Leopard using the rEFit boot manager. I got tired of Ubuntu and decided to go back to a single OS. I reinstalled OS X erasing all data on the HDD, and then restored from a Time Machine back-up. Since then, start-up is very slow. I get a bright white/grey screen that last about 6-10 seconds before the apple logo appears and the chime sounds. I thought it might be a bad TIme Machine back-up so i tried a different one. I had no luck with this method, or repairing disk permissions etc. in Disk Utility.
What is causing this change in start-up time?
    Can i fix it?
Any help is much appreciated THANKS!!

I know it may sound goofy, but worth a try...
Many times after erasing my Windows / Bootcamp partition I experienced extremely slow startups. What I found to fix that was to open System Preferences -> Startup Disk and make sure your Mac OS X is selected for the default to startup your system. Anytime I experienced this problem, Mac OS X was not selected.
Hope it works for this also.

  • MacBook slow after upgrading to mavericks--still slow after reverting with time machine

After upgrading to Mavericks OS my 2012 MacBook became slower than ever before. My MacBook was freezing and the beach ball kept appearing. This seemed to be something a lot of people were experiencing with Mavericks, so after other suggested didn't work, I decided to just revert to Mountain Lion using Time Machine. But my mac is still slow--I now avoid using it because it's such a huge hassle. I have 8 gb of RAM, 5.5 gb of which is free. ~98 % of the CPU is idle.  Have no idea how to get my computer back to how it used to be. Any suggestions?

Resetting SMC could solve the problem, if you didn't yet.

Or clean install of Mavericks could solve the problem.

  • MacBook slow at startup

    Hi everyone,
I recently wanted to upgrade the hard drive of my macbook with a 7200 rpm, and made the change very easily. I also changed one of the memory sticks from 512 to 1G, so I now have 1.5G of memory. Both stick are from different brand though.
Anyways, I decided to revert back to the original hard drive the computer came with since the I found the other one too noisy, and ever since I did so, the mackbook takes a long time to load the log-in page (i have a password set-up to access my laptop). It displays a white screen for at least 20 sec, before i see the apple and the timer being display, and then get to the mac os startup page.
Any idea where this comes from and how to get back the quick start-up? I read on the net that it may come from the memory being different?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

    Hi -
To test that theory out I'd suggest swapping your memory back to its orig. state and seeing if there is a difference. Then you'll know for sure.
Have you installed a bunch of apps lately ...perhaps repairing permissions and running your maintenance scripts might speed things up as well.

  • Macbook slow after lion update

    Hi everybody,
i have a MacBook, the device is working fine with snow leopard, but when i updated to Lion, my MacBook is slow, i can not view the animation when i open the apps or the app is on full screen.
do i need to restore to factory defaults?
why snow leopard size is: 7.8GB and lion size is: 3.5GB?
Lion is only a update of snow leopard and is not
    Best regards,

    >Lion is only a update of snow leopard and is not
What makes you say that?  Both are distinguishable from the predecessors based on the CPUs they will run on, and the amount of RAM they will run on.    Both are paid for purchases from Apple.
Lion requires 2 GB of RAM and 7 GB of hard disk free.  It also got rid of Rosetta, and CoreDuo, CoreSolo compatibility.
Snow Leopard requires 1 GB of RAM, and 5 GB of hard disk free.  It also got rid of PowerPC CPU compatibility, though continued to include Rosetta.
Leopard requires 512MB of RAM and 9 GB of hard disk free.  It got rid of Classic.  It added Boot Camp.  It adds certain iTunes to iPhone, iPad, and iPod compatibility.
As for your animation issue, is it with an application known to be Lion compatible?

  • Database slow on startup

    Hi,
I am a new administrator and am facing an issue with my Oracle 8.1.6 database.I have encountered a problem where somedays my Oracle becomes extemely slow after startup.Almost it goes into a hung kind of state wheneever any reports etc are accessed from the application. After waiting for abt half an hour or so everything goes back to normal.
Has anyone faced a similar kind of problem .Has it got something to do with the recovery process taking place during startup. Can you please help me find a solution to this.
    Regards,
    Dinesh

in order to be sure you may watch the operating system cpu, disk, memory and network load and catch the top consuming proceses - you can use sar iostat vmstat and netstat for unix -
After match them from v$ views to find out the sql query, what they are waiting etc. - you can use this query to identify what is going on behind -
    -- who is doing what
    SELECT sq.sql_text,
    se.status,
    se.username,
    se.osuser,
    se.terminal,
    se.machine,
    'ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION ''' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# ||
    ''' IMMEDIATE ;',
    se.sid,
    se.serial#,
    pr.spid,
    se.saddr,
    se.schemaname,
    se.program,
    se.logon_time,
    sq.hash_value,
    sq.address,
    sq.buffer_gets,
    sq.disk_reads,
    sq.executions,
    sq.fetches,
    sq.rows_processed,
    io.block_gets,
    io.consistent_gets,
    io.physical_reads,
    io.block_changes,
    io.consistent_changes,
    se.module,
    se.action,
    se.client_info,
    sw.event,
    sw.p1text,
    sw.p1,
    sw.p2text,
    sw.p2,
    pr.pga_used_mem,
    pr.pga_alloc_mem,
    pr.pga_freeable_mem,
    pr.pga_max_mem,
    'exec dbms_support.start_trace_in_session(' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# || ', ' ||
    'waits => TRUE' || ', ' || 'binds => TRUE);',
    'exec dbms_support.stop_trace_in_session(' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# || ');'
    FROM v$session se, v$sqlarea sq, v$process pr, v$session_wait sw, v$sess_io io
WHERE status IN ('ACTIVE', 'KILLED', ' INACTIVE', ' CACHED', ' SNIPED')
    AND se.sql_hash_value = sq.hash_value(+)
    AND se.sql_address = sq.address(+)
    AND se.paddr = pr.addr
    AND se.sid = sw.sid
    AND se.sid = io.sid
    ORDER BY sq.sql_text, se.username, se.schemaname, se.osuser, se.program, se.sid
You need to match the top consumer os processes' id with the "pr.spid" column, then you might look at the other columns of that row for details.
Also the database runs a number of jobs - backups, etc. these may be the problems.
