My macbook starts up and crashes

hey im trying to fix my friends macbook and it starts up, shows the apple and the spinning wheel and shuts off automatically. idn what to do at this point, i go into (command + s) and type in fsck -r/dev/disk0s2 and it says volume check failed. so ya, any help at all would be perfect, i would completely whipe it too. anything to get it starting again. ps i dont have the disc.

You're going to have to get your hands on a disc and try reformatting the drive. If it's in warranty, contact Apple and they may exchange the drive for you.

After all you've tried, Dah*veed is probably right about needing warranty assistance.
But first check to be sure Settings-Airplane Mode is set to OFF, and Settings-WiFi-WiFi is set to ON.
Try unplugging your WiFi router for a few seconds.  Then reset the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  You will need to reconnect to your WiFi.

  • 10.4.9 Problems on Macbook Pro:  Keychain and crash

This morning I unsuspectingly ruined my day when I let SoftwareUpdate apply the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update (Intel) to my new Macbook Pro.
Near the end of the install the computer crashed and would not boot into Darwin (I could only boot standalone). After calling Apple Support, I did an Archive and Install back to the original 10.4.8 and everything was fine.
I then (bravely or foolishly, haven't yet decided) applied Apple software updates one-by-one with the following results:
    1. Security Update 2007-002 (Intel) definitely messes up Kerberos and therefore SSH and many secure web pages. This is an issue that others have described, with fixes, on the web, but I thought that I would reemphasize it here as Apple should pull off this update and correct it immediatelly! Note that the PPC version seems to work okay.
    2. On this second go, I was able to complete the installation of the 10.4.9 Update (Intel) without a crash but upon reboot, Keychain didn't work at all (it won't even launch Keychain Access and any app that trys to query the Keychain crashes).
The upshot of all this is that I am once again going back to 10.4.8 and will stay there until Apple fixes there glaring problems with their Intel updates.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Same problem here too with my 3 month old MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. In fact is even worse for some (most) laptop users because the Keychain Access crash problem means that you can no-longer log into encrypted wi-fi networks where the keys are stored in Keychain.
It is possible to make Keychain Access open under Rosetta, however this does not seem to do anything to make Airport work.
Somebody at Apple please fix this ASAP or you're going to have a lot of very unhappy customers!
Other poster who recommended that we get a lot more paranoid about backups and disk cloning strategies is correct... I've learned my lesson. However, it's a sad day when one has to start thinking like a Windows user before doing updates. The whole point of the Apple experience is that it's supposed to make all these distractions just go away.
Oh, and while you're at it, Apple people... if you have any time to spare in between inventing new shiny bling toys and awarding yourselves stock options... could you PLEASE fix the Kerberos framework bug you introduced an update or two back so that those of us who use your expensive hardware to do actual WORK as opposed to watching American Idol out-takes, can do something as simple as ssh -l uname server.com without a SEGMENTATION FAULT.
Yes, i know there is a way to get around this using an earlier bundled update and a program called Pacifist... but why should I have to do this at all?
It's totally unacceptable that a product which is billed as being the perfect *nix laptop cannot do something as simple as ssh into a remote server.
Sarcasm aside, I'm sure you guys are very busy trying to roll a lot of new stuff out the door + new OS version coming soon... but please try to fix some of the broken 'base load' stuff soon. You're ******* off your fanboy base.
Yes, believe it or not, I'm a fanboy on a good day. And I just want to get on with my programming... when you will let me use my Airport network at home and kindly deign to let me ssh into my servers again.

  • IMovie on Macbook constant freezing and crashing

Hi, I am now to MacBooks and just purchased a brand new Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display, MGX72B/A.  Just started using iMovie that comes with it and it's constantly freezing and sometimes crashing all together. Does anyone know if this is a known issue or should I be looking at different software?
I have run all updates and its running OS X Mavericks.

  • My MacBook keeps freezing and crashing during startup and use, what's wrong?

My MacBook functioned perfectly for YEARS, and suddenly it started freezing during startup. One of four things happens: it starts up no problem, it freezes at the apple logo with the load wheel spinning, it freezes at a 'no' symbol (a circle with a line through it) with the load wheel spinning, or it freezes at a logo which is a folder with a question mark in it. It occasionally goes through and gets to the homepage, where I can use the computer for a certain amount of time before it freezes again. I never get to use it for more than 30 or 45 minutes at a time.
Yes, I have updated all my software, and I haven't dropped it or downloaded anything that could cause this issue. What could be going wrong? :(

There are corrupted system files involved, so my suggestion is to reinstall OS X.
If you are using Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you are using Leopard or Tiger:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Flash CS5 Slow Start up and crash on Snow Leopard

    Hello,
I'm using a new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. We have Adobe MC CS5.
I'm experiencing serious problems with Flash CS5. The program locks up at "Initializing Tools" for several minutes at start up. Once the program opens it will crash if I try to create a blank document. Other Adobe programs work fine.
Flash CS4 worked fine on this computer.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried uninstalling and deleting all adobe documents from the configuration folders. It just seems like this machine is cursed or something.
I've noticed other people have had this same problem on both Mac and Windows machines. Any help from Adobe?
    Thanks,
    David

I figured it out. For me the problem was my very large font library existing in both the user font folder and the system library font folder. Once I deleted the duplicate Fonts from my user library Flash returned to normal. Everything works great now.

  • Macbook Start up and shut down

I bought the 2010 macbook pro with 320GB, I've been using if for almost 2 months. I don't know if its just me but I feel like when I open my macbook it's too slow. It start up usually takes 45-60 seconds. Is it normal?
Whenever I turn if off, it wouldnt turn off even after a couple of minutes. I have to force quit it. I know it damages the system but I don't have a choice. Anyways, out of my 320GB I already consumed 120GB.

    Hello there,
Personally, A 45-60 second startup time doesn't seem too bad to me. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
When you try to turn it off, Do you just press the "power" button? When you press the power button, Does a small window appear asking you if you wish to "Shut Down, Restart or Cancel?"
If you then select "Shut Down" it should shut down within a few seconds. If not, It may be because you have an application open that is preventing a shut down. While I'm not sure what all of the applications are that will prevent a shut down, I know when I've tried to shut down my computer when "Audio MIDI Setup" is open, That will usually prevent the device from shutting down. At least until I quit the running application.
So perhaps that could be the cause of your issue?
Well, The amount of HD space that you use up mainly depends on what you have on your HD. If you have a large media library (photos, videos, music) then that will eat up space in no time (even more so if you have high definition movies or uncompressed audio and photo files like .WAV/.AIFF or RAW photos)
I would suggest cleaning your HD of any files that you don't need/don't want and either deleting them, or moving them to an external storage device. Like a flash drive, memory card, CD/DVD or external hard drive.
I'm not 100% sure, But I believe it's safe to say that if you have a lot of large files on your machine, That could be slowing down the startup/shutdown time.
I hope this solves your issue, This is what I thought of when I read your post.

  • My iphone4s started jamed and crashed all the time after I updated to iOS7. can anyone help me with this??

After updated my phone started acting up,,

    Can anyone help me pls!
    Thx..

    Hi Luaylool,
If you are having multiple issues after updating your iPhone, you may want to make sure you have a current backup, then try restoring the phone and testing it for those issues before returning your data. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Macbook Pro keeps freezing and crashing

    I have a 2012 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.5 with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB of memory, and a Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.
I have had the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 installed on this computer since I got it and have always used it without a problem. But last night, after running Photoshop for a couple hours, the computer suddenly froze with the little dash wheel thing spinning in the bottom middle of the screen. Then, it rebooted itself. Tonight, it has just happened again although I had been running Photoshop for less time.
I don't know if Photoshop is the problem or something else. I'm currently running a Sophos scan but it hasn't found anything yet. What else can I do to try to diagnose the problem?

Since your Macbook pro freezes and crashes, so try out these steps.
    1) Reset PRAM and NVRAM
First shut down your computer. Locate the keys Cmd+Option+P+R keys and then turn on. Now press and hold all the keys until you heard the start up sound for three times.
    2) Then Restart in safe mode
Here make sure the computer is shut down. Then press the power button. As if you hear the startup tone, press and hold the shift key. And then release it when you see the grey Apple logo and let the Mac boot.
    3) At last run disk utility in Single user mode
Turn your Mac off and on. Then press the Command key +S keys simultaneously and press the below command:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If the above command do not runs, then type fsk -fy and hit run. Then the disk utility should run and will finish. If it finishes with no error, type reboot and hit run. The Mac will boot then.
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Macbook pro wont start up and stuck on a restart screen, after mountain lion installtion failure

I tried installing Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro and the installation failed because my "hardrive was damage and could not be repaired" it then told me to restart my computer and try again which i did. However i am unable to even get back to my desktop because the Macbook starts up and i get the grey Apple logo and then this screen appears:
Instructing me to restart my computer, it has been stuck on this cycle for a few days now and i have no idea how to fix it.
Any help would be much appreciated
    StephBeard

    StephBeard,
if you still have your MacBook Pro’s original box, it can be found on one of the stickers on the box. If you don’t still have its box, it can be determined from your MacBook Pro’s serial number. If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three characters; if it has twelve characters, write down the last four. If you don’t have its box, please include in your reply those last three or four characters of its serial number.

  • Mac keeps freezing and crashing

    Hi,
I'm on a late 2009 iMac (3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo, 12 GB 1067 DDR3, 1TB HD) with Yosemite. I installed Yosemite a few days ago. Previously I ran Mountain Lion.
While on Mountain Lion the mac suddenly started freezing and crashing. I could still move the cursor, and most of the time my sound kept working (although the screen had frozen I could keep on calling via Skype - music and videos mostly stopped working after a minute or so), but I had to force turn off the mac. Upon rebooting most of the time I couldn't get past the start-up screen with the grey progress bar and Apple logo. The problem persists with Yosemite. There isn't any specific program which seems to cause it - I've had crashes running many different things. It doesn't seem to be a kernel panic: I've had only one instance where the grey letters would show up. Otherwise it just crashes.
I've tried many things to fix it already:
    - running DiskWarrior and removing corrupted files
    - removing dubious third party extensions
    - removing unnecessary login items/Launch Daemons/Launch Agents (after running EtreCheck)
    - I ran AHT twice (nothing came up) and Rember once (idem)
    - ran recovery mode to verify the disk (nothing came up)
    - ran Safe Boot for a while (no crashes), which causes me to believe it's a software-related problem.
I reinstalled Yosemite yesterday. It will only boot into safe mode since. While booting normally I can't get past the white screen.
About three months ago a faulty HD was replaced and RAM (8 GB) was added, both done in an Apple store. I've no reason yet to believe it's hardware-related because every test comes up clean, but I'm obviously not sure.
I don't know what to do next other than bringing it to the store. Any help would be much appreciated. Because I'm in safe mode my EtreCheck report differs from the normal report - if it's helpful to post it anyway, I will.
    Thanks!

  • Exchange server mail makes iphone freeze and crash

Hi, i bought my iphone last July and everything has been fine with it until a couple of months ago it started freezing and crashing. i tried restoring it to factory settings, sent it to Apple and they replaced it but it still happens!! it happens every 1-2 days, it crashes, freezes, restarts itself. I'll go to use it and its frozen so i have to reset it. I've overslept a few times when it's frozen over night and the alarm hasnt gone off! its completely fine when its not syncing my mail though.
I connect to my work's exchange server and sync mail, contacts and calender. I found that when i stop syncing the mail, the phone is fine, but i need to check my mail for work.
so ive had 2 phones and restored it a few times and it still does it!
    help please?
    Message was edited by: angel_kitty86

When you restored your iPhone, did you restore from your iPhone's backup, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup?
Did you transfer your iPhone's backup to the iPhone you received as an exchange under warranty?
If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup, restoring from the backup will also restore the problem.

  • Films hang and crash when downloading to iPad

Although I have plenty of free space on my iPad (3rd Generation) I am finding it impossible to download any more movies. After about 500Gb the screen hangs and then crashes. When I log back on the download starts afresh and crashes time and time again.
The last successful download was about three months ago.

i've got the same problem, i'm testing InDesign CS5.5, i upload everything. It's working fine with the desktop viewer.
But when i open the Adobe Content Viewer on the iPad, i can see that there is a new content with the good name.
But there is no thumb preview for this content, and when i click on it to download it, the APP say that the content it's empty or not valide.
sorry for my english, i'm a french mother tongue from Switzerland

  • P45 Platinum [MS-7512] booting and crashing issues

    Hello all,
Upgraded my PC with new hw and faced with annoying problem:
I can boot it only 1 time of 20-30 (roughly) attempts, the typical symptoms are (word-for-word from https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=118779.0 post):
All the led of (group 1,3 and 4) turns red and group 2 turns green. According to the manual it says ''memory detection test. Testing onboard memory size. The D-LED will hang if the memory module is damage or not installed properly.''
Problem arose after I'd replaced ATI HD3850 with nVidia GTX260, no other changes were made.
Tested another pair of DIMMs - the same behaviour.
    My config:
    Intel E8400 / MSI P45 Platinum [MS-7512 PCB 1.0] / Corsair XMS2 [TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF] 4096Mb (2x2048Mb) PC2-8500 1066MHz DDR2 / Inno3D nVidia GeForce GTX260 / Hyper 620W PSU / 4 HDDs / Creative X-Fi / Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit
Initial BIOS version was 1.0, all BIOS settings are default (used load default optimal settings), no overclocking.
After MSI released version 1.1 I flashed it that solves problem with booting but my PC started freezing and crashing several times a day, also tried other beta version found there https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=117741.0 :
    1.2b4 - the same as 1.1
P.0b16 - testing now no crashes still
Again, all BIOS settings are default, no overclocking, BIOS flashed with CMOS clearing and loading default optimal settings.
    Any suggestions?

Because of both - motherboard and DIMMs support 1066MHz, memory works on 1066Mhz by default, in my case under heavy loads (games for example) PC freezes or reboots randomly.
After changing FSB/DRAM ratio to 1:1.2 (800Mhz for DRAM) as Jack the Newbie suggested (thanks!) system became stable.
The question what about 1066Mhz remains open, different BIOS versions set different voltages to DRAM (version 1.0 - less than 2.1V and system doesn't boot with 1066Mhz DDR2 which needs 2.1V (correct me if i'm wrong, don't want to reflash just to check this statement) - versions 1.1 and later set 2.1V - which is perfect for overclocked DDR2 but doesn't assure stable system in my case. BTW I haven't tested with 2.2V yet may be it helps.

  • Safari keeps freezing and crashing on my macbook. Won't let me 'force quit', re-start or shut down. HELP!

Sometimes when I am surfing the internet each website gets slower and slower to load, and eventually the little loading rainbow icon just keeps going round and round and it has frozen and crashed. What concerns me also is the fact that when this happens it won't even let me 'force quit Safari'. Although I can still bring other applications up (other than the internet), it won't let me shut down or restart either. The only way to get the internet working again is to press the power button which I know I shouldn't do, but what choice do I have when it won't let me force quit, restart or shut down?
I am up to date with all the software updates. Because I was having this crashing problem I downloaded both iBoostUp (off app store) and MacKeeper off the internet to scan for hidden viruses etc, but it still hasn't eradiated the problem.

Tell us what Extensions you put there; if no extension, what other apps you installed BEFORE this began to occur.
You must fall under one of these situations.
