My MacBook will not shutdown or restart

When attempting to shutdown or restart all apps. close, I get the message that says system will close/shutdown in a certain amount of seconds, but the process is not completed. I've tried holding down the power button as well. This does not work. Any suggestions?

hmmm...try repairing permissions using disk utility.

hope it works.

Zap the PRAM and reset the CMS
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
How to Reset Your Mac's SMC
The method for resetting your Mac's SMC depends on the type of Mac you have. All SMC reset instructions require shutting down your Mac first. If your Mac fails to shut down, try pressing and holding the power button until the Mac shuts down, which usually takes 10 seconds or so.
Mac portables with user-removable batteries (MacBook and most MacBook Pros):
    Shut down your Mac.
Disconnect your Mac portable from its MagSafe connector.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Re-install the battery.
    Reconnect the MagSafe connector.
    Turn your Mac on.
Mac portables with non-user-removable batteries (MacBook Air and some late 2009 MacBook Pro models):
    Shut down your Mac.
Connect the MagSafe power adapter to your Mac and to a power outlet.
On the built-in keyboard (this will not work from an external keyboard), simultaneously press and hold the left shift, control, and option keys while you press the power button. Release all keys at the same time.
Press the power button to start your Mac.
Mac desktops (Mac Pro, iMac, Mac mini):
    Shut down your Mac.
    Unplug your Mac's power cord.
Press and hold the Mac's power button for 15 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Reconnect your Mac's power cord.
    Wait five seconds.
Start your Mac by pressing the power button.
Alternative SMC reset for Mac Pro:If you have a Mac Pro that isn't responding to the normal SMC reset as described above, you can force a manual SMC reset by using the SMC reset button located on the Mac Pro's motherboard.
    Shut down your Mac.
    Unplug the Mac's power cord.
Open the Mac Pro's side access panel.
Just below the Drive 4 sled and adjacent to the top PCI-e slot is a small button labeled SMC. Press and hold this button for 10 seconds.
Close the Mac Pro's side door.
    Reconnect your Mac's power cord.
    Wait five seconds.
Start your Mac by pressing the power button.

  • MacBook will not Shutdown, Restart, or Logout after 10.5.7 update

Ive been having this problem for weeks now, and have been unable to find anything to fix this issue.
My MacBook will no longer restart/shutdown/logout from the apple menu. it also does nothing when i press the power button to try and get the options to come up. nothing happens when i choose the options from the apple menu. no error or time out messages or anything like that. the only way i can get my mac to shutdown is to either do a hard restart or by using the shutdown command in terminal.
i have tried running disk utility, repairing permissions, running onyx, downloading the 10.5.7 combo update from apple, resetting the pram, etc etc. but nothing has changed.
all of my programs, etc. are working fine. and everything else about my mac seems completely normal except for this.
i forgot to add that sleep mode does work from the apple menu. nothing else though.
ive read that a lot of people are having some bad issues with the 10.5.7 update.
    please help. im stuck!

This is what shows up in console: (maybe someone who can understand this can help us!)

  • 10.4.9 Will Not Shutdown or Restart.

Ok, I went through many many discussions but decided to start a new topic because nothing seems to be helping. I have a dual 1.8 G5 w/ 4 GB of memory. I ran Carbon Copy Cloner to do a bootable backup. repaired permissions, ran disk warrior, booted up from my 10.4 install disk and ran an update. After it booted up, I repaired permissions, downloaded the 10.4.9 combo update and ran it. At this time, it wouldn't reboot. Everything on the screen goes blank as if it quit everything. However, some processes seems to be preventing it from shutting down or rebooting.
I booted up in safe mode (holding the shift), single user mode (apple-s) and ran the fsck -f command. Still hangs.
I did open up console and ran a SUDO kill process command (can't remember which one it was but when I get home I will post everyone the command) then did a shutdown and low and behold it worked. However, if I don't run this sudo command before I reboot or shutdown it will not restart or shutdown.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking of doing an archive and reinstall or better yet, format and reinstall. I just don't really want to reload all my applications (Cubase SX 2 w/ all the VST's sounds like a PITA).
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Bill

Well last night I clean out various caches w/ MainMenu, zapped the PRAM (Apple-Opt-P-R), unplugged the power and none of them seemed to solve my issue. I ended up pulling the three items out of the StartupItems folder, sudo shutdown -h now in terminal, then shut down... I didn't just do everything all at the same time. I'm pretty sure that the three StartupItems were causing the problem because we are now starting up fine. Unfortunately I will probably need to reinstall CubaseSX 2 Dongle software because I think that was one of the items I removed from the startup items. Also I kind of was sloppy the other night and deleted the startup items under my user. So, I'm not done but everything seems to be working great right now.

  • MacBook will not log out, restart, or shut down

I know there have been tons of posts on this topic but I still do not know how to fix this. My MacBook has never had any trouble shutting down, restarting, or logging out before and now all of a sudden it will not do any of these three things. I have not installed anything new in quite some time. Whenever I try to shut down it says that Finder will not quit and to quit the application, I do this and the Mac just sits there at the desktop without the dock and the hard drive symbol. Is there any solution to this problem?

I'm very new to the Mac World so I don't know what you mean!
I did read to repair the permissions and this is what I got when I did that about 2 minutes ago:
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.

  • IMac will not shutdown or restart

This issue has been more noticeable since the installation of 10.5.3 but I do not know whether it is related or not.
When I issue a Logout or a Shutdown command from the Apple menu, the system will close all my applications, hide the grey menu bar across the top of the screen, and then stop. The Dock remains visible and accessible at all times.
From this point I am able to open an application to restore the grey menu bar, and repeat the process. This is commonly followed by an error message "Logout has timed out because application XXX is still running"
This behaviour also persists when I manually close the applications I have open, and then issue a Logout or Shut Down command.
Pressing the power button on the rear simply sends the machine to sleep in it's current form (no apps running; no grey menu bar; just the Dock showing). Pressing the power button again wakes it up into the state described. Pressing and holding the power button for 15 seconds to get the machine to beep at me appears to be the only way to reset and restart the machine at present.
Any pointers/advice/trouble shooting you can offer would be great.
    Cheers,
    David

    Two things:
    1. Forcing the machine to shutdown by holding the power button is like disconnecting an external drive without ejecting it first-- it causes directory damage. Of coarse if it's locked up this may be your last resort but now you have to check the volume for damage. Start by opening up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left then under the First Aid tab click Verify Disk. If the Verification fails then you will need to boot up to your install Disk in order to run Repair Disk. Or you can purchase a third party utility like Disk Warrior which will do a better job than Disk Utility anyway. Also while you have Disk Utility open go ahead and Repair the Disk Permissions on your drive as well. This is important to do periodically especially after installing Apple updates.
    2. Try unplugging any and all external devices like hard drives, printers, scanners, ipods, and flash drives. Often times an external device may be drawing power through the data cable causing the computer not to respond. If this fixes the problem plug in only one device at a time to try and figure out which one is causing the issue. Also try un-mounting any network devices such as an iDisk. If you have an iDisk try disabling the auto connect feature.

  • White screen and freeze when trying to restart after downloading Mountain Lion 8.2 upgrade. Mac will not shutdown or restart without freezing on whitescreen.

Downloaded Mountain Lion update 10.8.2 last night. All went well until the message after the download – restart your mac to install this update. The screen went white and the machine didn’t restart. After waiting for quite a while, I shutdown using the main power button. Restarted iMac later and it opened in 10.8.1 and the iTunes icon informed me that I had an upgrade to 10.8.2 that required me to restart the machine to install the upgrade. I did this and again, the screen went white and froze when trying to restart. Rebooted thinking I might be OK to run in 10.8.1 and ignoring the update but when I tried this the Mac worked fine but when I came to shut down I got the white screen freeze thing again. Does anyone have any easy-to-follow solutions for this or will I have to shut down using the main power button every day?
    Many thanks for any suggestions.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Macbook will not shutdown unless the power button is held

Recently my macbook has been refusing to shutdown when I click shutdown from the apple icon menu. When I press the power button, no menu pops up asking if I want to shutdown my macbook. It only shuts down when I hold the power button. Nothing changes, and its as if the macbook ignored my command (my screen doesn't turn blue, nothing disappears). Has anyone experienced this specifically, and what can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance

    Hey Adam,
First off, Happy Friday! I would go ahead a try a hard reset to resolve this issue. You can find the instructions on how to do this on this page: Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues
If this does not resolve the issue post back with any new details and we can go from there.
    Thanks,

  • MacBook will not Power Down / Restart (Or Update)

    Hello Guys,
For some bizzare reason my Mac wont restart or update, not to sure when the problem started as I normally just put it into sleep!
But basically when I click update it says the updates need the Mac to be restarted, I click ok. It basically logs out and goes to the Username screen to login.
Same story when trying to restart/shutdown; just goes to the login screen.
I'm tempted to do a OS Wipe and start Fresh! However it's going to take 3 hours to download the latest OS! Patients isn't my strongest point haha!
    Any suggestions/ideas would be brilliant!
    Many Thanks,
    Jac

    Jac ..
Try Starting up in Safe Mode.  A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so you do need patient.
A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help. Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen. From the drop down menu click Restart.
If that didn't work, you need to Lion Recovery  to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reintall the Mac OS X.
For download connection speed information see:  Requirements for reinstalling OS X Lion  at that link.
Reinstalling OS X Lion via Lion Recovery requires broadband access to the Internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection.

You must be running NTFS, DOS cannot read an NTFS partition in most cases. If using NTFS follow the instructions found > here for flashing.

  • MacBook will not Shut Down or Restart

My MacBook will not shut down or restart from the apple menu, nor from any other dialog box that pops up, after an update, for instance. The only way I can turn it off/restart is by using the power button. I have tried archiving and installing OS X, but I am still having this problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?

    Hi Henry,
    Help here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Second, make sure you have all your updates. Click the Apple logo in the Menu then click Software Updates.
Reset PRAM by holding option-command-P-R keys down during startup until you hear the chime at least three or four times.
Resetting the PRAM is a standard procedure for the problem you are experiencing.
Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. DU is located here:
Applications/Utilities. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU and reboot.
If you need further assistance, please post back.

Snow Leopard is a Mac OS X version. You say that it's the version you have in your Mac (10.6.8). Do a back up of your files, format the hard drive (using Disk Utility) and reinstall again

  • After downloading I was entering my password for iCloud and clicked on forgot....now it's stuck and will not shutdown. When I try to shut down it says Set up Assistant cancelled shutdown. This has been going on for 5 hrs plus...any ideas?

MAcbook is stuck and will not shutdown following download of X Mavericks software. Setup assistant is stuck and will not allow the MacBook Air to shutdown. It's been doing this for over 5 hours......any ideas?

    Hi there—
This reply doesn't seem to take into account the query.
    Please help?
The computer is completely unresponsive and won't shut down or turn off. It is stuck in Set Up Assistant after trying to sign in to AppleID.
Attempting to shut down or restart produces the following dialogue:
"The application Set Up Assistant has cancelled shut down.
To try shutting down again, quit Setup Assistant and click Try Again."
HOWEVER it is impossible to quick Set Up Assistant— the icon is completely unresponsive even to force quit, right click or anything.
I've managed to get into being able to see Dashboard and at the top Desktop and the dock below. But I can't click on anything from there. So it seems it is not the whole computer. Just set-up assistant.
    Please help??
    Thank you

  • My mac mini will not shutdown with either Mavericks or Yosemite (following a clean install)

First noted while running Mavericks, my Mac-Mini will not shutdown.  It just hangs on a black screen with the little icon.  I created a clean user account and the problem went away.  Rather than do a fresh install of Mavericks, I waited until Yosemite came out.  I reformatted the drive and did a fresh Yosemite install.  I then restored my apps and data only to find the problem is still present.  I've also tried stopping many of the applications I would normally expect might cause the problem with no luck.  And I tried the one Yosemite suggestion regarding deleting the Library/Caches folder content with no luck.
My naive question:  following the fresh install of Mavericks, should I have done a re-install of my (very many) applications instead of a restore from an image?
I've tried looking at the system logs after I've forced a shutdown with the power button but there's nothing I could find that shows any problems.
Any other suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks.
    It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
    I have reset the PRAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Surface Pro Windows 8.1 Will Not Shutdown

    Hello All:
I'm having a problem with a Surface Pro that will not shutdown. It says it's shutting down, but it doesn't. I touch the screen after long periods of time after issuing a shutdown & it's waiting to log back in. Restart works as advertised.
Anyone got some tips to troubleshoot this? Thanks for any feedback.

I found it - "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" was turned on. This is a terrible (and not recommended by IT admins) setting to have turned on by default. Does MS even need to mess w/the shutdown buttons/process? First the Office Ribbon, then
    the Start button, now this!
People are creatures of habit - keep things the same or @ least allow them to change it back to how they're used to!
Sorry for the rant, but YEESH already!
