My MacBook won't boot to Ubuntu on my external hard drive. Please help!
I installed Ubuntu on my 500 GB hard drive, however, when I hold the option key down at startup to load boot manager, Ubuntu isn't there. The same thing occurs when I look at start up disks in system preferences. The Ubuntu boot loader is installed on my external hard drive.
I know in windows you must access bios to boot from a USB device, Is it a similar situation for Snow Leopard?

On a Mac there is no BIOS. They use EFI instead which doesn't allow that.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

My MacBook won't boot into recovery mode after new hard drive installation. Please help!
I just installed a new hard drive. On boot it keeps on going to the flashing folder with a question mark inside.
I was able to format the new hard drive but am unable to boot into recovery mode to install the operating system over the air.
When I hold down Command -R it keeps on taking me to the flashing folder.
Please help!A new hard drive doesn't have a recovery partition. It's totally blank.You're going to need either your original install discs or a Snow Leopard retail disc from which partition, format and install OS X.

IMac won't Boot using FireWire connection on external Hard Drive?

I Have an iMac 24" 2.16ghz 3GB RAM with a 1Tb Western Digital external Hard Drive.
I'm running my iMac of an external Hard Drive as my internal drive is faulty. Currently this set up works best for me as i can 'piggy back' off the University's computers.
When i hit the option key on start up the computer doesn't 'see' the Hard Drive when it's connected via it's FireWire port. Using the USB port works fine.
I know the Hard Drive's FireWire connection works as i previously used it as a back up drive.
As i use Final Cut 7 as my main application working via USB isn't really a practical option..
Can anyone shed some light on what the issue might be?

Can I boot my computer from an external hard drive
I have already used the (internal) hard drive to boot my computer. If it is bootable while outside the computer, that is only the (internal) hard drive being outside the computer running while the computer is on then I will buy an external herd drive enclosure so that it can do so.

I am running a Late 2008 MacBook unibody with Mac OS X (10.6.8). The hard drive I plan to boot from has been used internally and is an ssd hard drive, I formated it before I started using it.... that part is for using an internal hard drive and as I stated that is the one I am trying to avoid wearing by daily swapping. Not only is it an inconvenience to swap them, but it is not an activity that is usually expected to be performed by most users, so likely this part is not meant to be used for that and that would make it not built for multiple hard drives swaps making it prematurely wear out.
That is exactly correct. We do not do that.
It is not necessary to get inside your computer to connect a hard drive. You can connect a second (or third, or even more) drive externally. And if the drive is correctly formatted, you can boot from it. An external hard drive enclosure costs less than < $10. You install the drive in the enclosure, and you can connect it externally to a usb port on the computer.
A typical enclosure for a SATA laptop drive looks like this:

In summary then, keep one drive inside the computer. Always. Use any other drives you need as externals. If you have many external usb devices, plug them into a powered hub. This way nothing needs to be regularly connected and disconnected. -

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount" and "diskutil info disk2." Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1." I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help? Thank you. blelambert

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.

FCPX won't recognize projects/events on my External Hard Drive
I have all my projects and events for FCPX on my external hard drive because my MacBook Air does not have enough room for it. I've been working on my Air for a couple years and I just got a iMac. I thought it would be simple enough just to plug in my hard drive into my iMac and it would recognize everything, but sadly it isn't. I've looked everywhere and I couldn't find any fixed for it. I can just create new events from my old events but that would take alot of work. I thought there would be an easier way to be able to import all my old events/project and start working on them.
*Also when I create an event on my iMac external hard drive, it puts it will all my old events in the same folder, but still won't recognize them. Stumped

Trouble booting my eMac from an external hard drive
My poor eMac's hard drive finally gave up the ghost the other night and died. My brother attempted to load OS 10.4 onto my external hard drive (Western Digital 320 GB My Book, Studio Edition) so that I could boot the computer up from there for the time being, but soon discovered that while my external can be used as a bootable drive from an Intel Mac, my Power PC was not supported.
Would another external hard drive, such as the LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drive, boot from my PPC eMac? I found this note in the product description and want to make sure my computer is capable of this:

On top of that, I can't help but think that spending at least $200 on parts and service on a 6-year-old computer is really that worth it. Well see if you can talk your brother into doing the job. It's a bit harder than the old iMacs (That I can do in about 4 minutes - I even use my power screw driver ). If you email me I can send you instructions.

Powerbook 15" w/ Tiger won't read Maxtor One Touch II External Hard Drive

For some reason my G4 Powerbook can't recognize my Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive. I am trying to find a firewire cable that fits, as the Maxtor just gave me a USB and says that the cable won't work with mac. I am trying to find a cable that has a "printer type" end and a firewire end. Will it help? Where do I find it?

ChrisNo the printer type end, won't work in Mac OS X either. The software that is included with One Touch does not work well on Tiger or later. Instead I recommend not using that software, and instead using Shirt Pocket Superduper for backup. Or look for EMC/Dantz to update the drivers for the included software to Tiger. I think the One Touch does have a Firewire 6 pin connector which is Mac compatible. These ports look like the Firewire port on your G4 Powerbook. Port number 2 below is a Firewire port:

Itunes won't find 'itunes music library' on external hard drive by default
I have my Itunes library saved on a wireless external hard drive. When I open itunes for the first time after a re-start it won't automatically detect the itunes music library file and I have to point it to the correct folder on the external hard drive. Once I do this everything works perfectly until I re-start my mac and then I have the same problem.
One of my friends has told me that macs won't automatically connect to wireless devices like windows does but he thinks there is some software that enables it to do so. I presume this would sort the issue out or alternatively any other suggestions are very welcome.

You can add your external HD to the list of startup items in > System Preferences > Accounts to avoid this problem.
