My MacBook won't detect my monitor

Help!  I have an I-INC monitor (iH252) and a mini-USB to HDMI adapter cord to connect it to my 2010 MacBook Pro.  However, Detect Displays does nothing, and the monitor tells me "No Signal Input, Check Video Cable" when I turn it on.  Is there some way to force my MacBook to recognize that it is connected to an external display?

My 2010 13" MacBook Pro isn't detecting my external monitor either, even after resetting PRAM, SMC.  I'm using a mini DVI to DVI adapter.  But my brother's new 2011 17" MacBook Pro works just fine with the exact same setup.  We both have the latest version of OS X Lion.

  • MacBook won't detect Toshiba 1T external hard drive

I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Pro and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive, even though I've been using it before.  Any ideas?

Adam513, turned out the latest operating system doesn't read Microsoft formatted external hard drives the way it used to.  I had to purchase a new external hard drive, them find an apple computer with an older version operating system so I could transfer my files to the new external which is formatted for Mac.  The new external works fine and once I have all the files transferred, I'll reformat my old external hard drive.  Took me and the guy at the Genius Bar a while, but we finally figured this out.  Hope this helps!

  • Macbook won't detect Acer X193w

I connect my Macbook to an Acer via MDP to VGA, the screen goes blue, and the monitor doesn't detect the macbook.  This also occurs when I connect to my TV.  Any I deas?

HOW did you connect your MacBook to the Acer?  What model MacBook Pro?  What adapter do you have?
HOW did you connect to the TV?
Just to clarify... monitors do not detect a computer....  the computer detects the monitor by reading something called the EDID from the monitor which provides information regarding the dimensions and refresh rate, then the computer drives the montor.
Did you select the proper input on the TV to receive the signal from the MacBook Pro?  Most TVs hav multiple inputs.

  • MacBook Pro Late 2011 10.7.5 won't detect external monitor

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro Late 2011 13" Running OSX Lion 10.7.5. It won't flash blue at ALL when connected to an external display. Under system report, it shows that the "Link Status" is 7. The same setup works with another MacBook Pro Mid 2009 15 inch. I am under AppleCare, should I take it in? Weird. All firmware updates are completed, no "Air Display" type programs are installed currently, and gfxcardstatus is also installed and doesn't really help.

Looks like a problem with the GPU (possibly the screen, but it looks more as if it's the GPU). If I were you, I'd take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have it diagnosed.

  • Macbook won't detect external display anymore - Random shutdown injury??

    Hi,
my Macbook has the dreaded random shutdown thing happening, often it can't even get through the startup sequence. If I reset the PMU and PRAM and check the disk every week I can keep it running. Applecare are making not particularly helpful suggestions like "run it in safe mode" - hello people, random means it can take days to happen again... I use this computer for work so I need it at full capacity every day!!!
Anyway, enough angry ranting. The casualty of today's RS and subsequent PRAM PMU resetting is my external display (Viewsonic LCD). The macbook is no longer sending signals to it (display says "no signal"). When I ask the macbook to "detect displays" nothing happens. I have restarted the macbook several times and unplugged and replugged the display connection it doesn't help. Yes, I have the AC power cable plugged in on the Macbook (I know it doesn't like talking to the screen if I don't).
The display and macbook have always worked fine together in the past...
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to test for causes or fix this display related problem?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You don't mention ever having brought the problem to Apple's attention, or what resulted from your request for Apple's help with it. This isn't a universal or widespread problem. It may be a hardware fault in your own equipment that needs to be resolved with a repair, or it may be a software problem (corrupt file, incompatible software conflict, update needed, etc., etc.). You seem to think Apple should have fixed it for you without your lifting a finger, and you're eager to complain about Apple's lack of support. But you've offered nothing to indicate that Apple even knows you need support. You do have to ask for it. Have you done so?
We have no idea what steps you've taken to try to narrow down the possibilities, e.g., making sure the monitor is turned on; trying a different video cable as iVmichael has suggested; testing the monitor with the same cable on a different computer; testing a different monitor with the same cable and then with a diferent cable on your computer; substituting a different cable adapter, if you are using one; applying all applicable system software updates and then Repairing Permissions and Repairing Disk; starting in Safe Mode and seeing whether the monitor is recognized and activated then; seeing whether the monitor is detected in System Profiler; and so on. You may have done some of these things, but you haven't told us about them or about the results.

  • Macbook won't detect an external display

Recently I decided to attempt to connect my Macbook to my new Sharp LCD TV. I have a mini DVI to DVI cable and then a DVI to VGA. When I hook up my Mac, nothing comes up. The television similarly displays 'No Signal'. The screen on the macbook goes blue briefly and then back to normal, but nothing has been detected. I've tried to use Detect Display but nothing happens. Do I need better cables? There's an HDMI port as well as the VGA port on Sharp TV do you think that would work better?
Any help would be much appreciated!

The Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter can only pass digital signals, not analog ones. So trying to use another cable or adapter to go to VGA won't work. Since you already have the DVI adapter, you could get a DVI to HDMI cable and try that.

  • 2014 Mac Mini won't detect Dell monitor on startup

On a cold start or waking from sleep it is necessary to reset the PRAM in order for the Mini to recognize a Dell P2014H.  Restarts are not a problem.
This was not an issue with an older MacBook Pro or an Air at the Genius Bar.  I have resolved this by setting preferences to never turn the display off but don't consider this a permanent fix.
I'm running 10.10.1 and connected via VGA to a Thunderbolt port.  The monitor is only 7 months old so I'm not inclined to replace it yet or add even more cables to my collection just to find that doesn't fix anything.  In fact when another 2014 Mini was connected to my monitor at the Apple store it had the same problem.
On the other hand our 2012 Mini has never had issues with a Dell U2412M.   So what's up Apple?

I just bought a Mac Mini with latest operating system 10.10.1 and had the same problem. I also used a monitor with HDMI cable. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Apple Care tech but no solutions. I took it back to shop and they tested it but did not have a HDMI cable and used a thunderbolt adapter. It worked fine. Bought a Thunderbolt adapter for HDMI cable and problem solved. Both mouse and keyboard now wake up system. Perhaps a future update will solve this but for now I'm happy.

  • Solution to 'my macbook won't detect my wifi anymore'

So my macbook connected to my wifi fine, then suddenly it stopped detecting it even though every other device I had detected it fine. After hours of searching the web I finally found a solution that worked for me. I saw that this problem is fairly common so I thought I'd share it on here aswell.
All you need to do is go to network preferences, select airport, then advanced, then under preferred networks delete the network you're trying to detect (you may want to write down its name at this point), then click apply. Turn off airport then turn it on again. Then click 'join other network' and manually type in your networks name and password in and it should connect.
This method worked for me and hopefully it'll work for anyone else having this problem.

You should mark this post with the "This solved my question" check mark so that others no there is a solution here rather than a post with only views and no replys.  Good find by the way!

I have a MacbookPro and a Samsung external monitor. I have them set up and ready to roll but my MBP wont detect the external monitor, so I can't get the screens to share. Please help me with how to detect and configure this.

Try resetting the PRAM and the SMC, in that order:

  • Macbook won't detect ethernet cord...

    Hey guys-
I'm staying in my girlfriends dorm and last night and earlier this morning the internet was working fine on my Macbook and then all the sudden it stopped detecting my ethernet cord...I keep plugging it in and out and no detection and then I put it in my girlfriend's macbook and it connects instantly...any ideas?

My daughter is a student at U. Mass. Amherst and she's having the exact same problem with her Dual Core Macbook. It just stopped connecting via Ethernet out of the blue last week.
Her roommate can get on fine with the same jack and cable. Since the port detects when the cable is inserted or removed, that suggests the port itself is ok... right? She can get on via airport elsewhere on campus, but not in her room, so that's a pain.
She's up to date with the latest firmware and OS -- in fact, I updated it over the weekend, not knowing whe was having problems back at school. the folks who run the campus computer support center are apparently not too Mac-savvy.
Were you able to resolve this problem?
    Thanks...

  • MacBook Air 2008 detects external monitor while not connected to one

When I put my MBA to sleep and wake it up, it detects and displays an external monitor. I checked the Display section in About this Mac, it shows that I'm connect to an external monitor when I'm not, and that I'm operating on Desktop 2. This is quite an issue due to a noticeable drop in performance and battery life. Has this happened to any one else? If so how did you fix it?

You wanted Extended Desktop, instructions on how to configure that are outlined in this article -

  • MacBook  won't detect projector

    Aloha,
I am using a MacBook with OSX 10.4.11. I am trying to get the machine to pick up an external display, a cannon projector via a DVI adapter.
Before I upload the new system on the machine with my preferences I was able to connect and see the external display. I was able to mirror and view it from the projector. I was running leopard then. Since I have uploaded the older system I cannot.
After going into system preference - display it only list 1280x800. It doesn't have a mirroring options or any other options for that matter. I have also tried hitting F7 and it did not work. Also it doesn't pick up the projector at all.
I did turn off both machines before I attached them. I don't not want to upgrade to leopard just yet, I would like to keep the system I have. Please let me know what I can to use the used the projector as another screen. Mahalo.

If it worked under Leopard, there is no reason it shouldn't work under Tiger. I would check and make sure there isn't a cabling problem. And also make sure the projector is set to the correct input.

  • Macbook won't detect USB input devices

    Hi everyone!
I'm desperately browsing the forum threads here for some help but after resetting everything resetable and after all recommended software updates, I still can't get my USB ports to recognize my external mouse/keyboard (Logitech S530 Desktop). Of course, I have also tried several other mice (also wired) but it didn't work either. Though, external HDs and IPod work fine. I quite doubt that it's a hardware problem because after formatting and reinstalling the OS, the ports were working again until I have carried out all the software updates (firmware and so on...). Could it be a driver conflict? Is there someone with the same problem?
    I'd really appreciate your help!!!
MacBook (Black)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have had a problem that is a little similar. After leaving my computer on and not using it for a few hours I return to find my input devices (keyboard and mouse) not responding. the computer is still perfectly functional, but the USB devices do not work. I have to restart to get them to work again.
Any ideas? It's happened 3-4 times in the past few weeks since I got it. I thought it was just being iffy, but this is a little worrying.
    thanks!
