My Macbook won't start up...Please help!

My Macbook powers on but doesn't go past the grey screen with the apple. The gear thing keeps turning but it doesn't start up. What can I do? I'm a bit technology challenged but I want to try everything before I take it in. I'm scared of losing all my information. I'd appreciate any suggestions you guys can give me.

Greg's suggestion is what you need to do. I will only add that you should repair the hard drive before attempting the Archive and Install. See the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Macbook is not starting up, please help

Alright, as of 3 hours ago my Macbook (white model) is not loading up past the Grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning circle. I have tried booting into safe mode by pressing "shift" key, and it won't work. I tried doing the hardware test by pressing the "D" key and it found no problems. I tried putting in my Mac OS X install Disc and it doesn't load it... It does find it though (when I pressed the option key).
The weird thing is, that I am currently on my Windows 7 OS..using my Macbook. This side of the harddrive seems to work just fine.
I have no idea why it is not working for me, I already reset the PRAM and SMC...
    Can someone please help??
Does Apple give out replacement macbooks? or Will they be able to fix this??
I have had this macbook for 1 year as of October 2nd.

Did you try booting from your OS X install disc using the C key? When you used the option key, did the installer load?
If so, choose a language, then from the Installer menu, choose *Disk Utility*. Click on *Macintosh HD* in the left-hand column, then click *Repair disk*. If any errors can't be repaired, try again. If it fails a second time, post the message here.

  • One more iBook won't start. Please help...

    Hi,
I apologise for my English from the very beginning. Be patient please...
I see from older topics that I am having a rather common problem. I just got this iBook G3 900 MHz 12' 680 Mb RAM from Ebay. It lasted 5 days (working fine) and then it suddenly died.
I have already tried all possible key combinations for PMU resets and carefully read the help page in case when a portable won't start. No good.
Here are the synthoms more in detail: The battery would not charge (it has only 1 flashing light out of four and I was warned before it died that its charge level was getting low). The ibook now don't start, even with the power adapter hooked up.
If this can help, the ring light on the adapter cord is green when the battery is on, and removing the battery turns the light to amber.
I started reading Internet discussions and it sounded an DC in-board problem, and I've already found a replacement from a friend...
    BUT...
I did a further test tonight taking the battery for an identical ibook of a friend and when I put his battery on mine, it started up and kept being up only for me to see that the battery level was getting low low low --- dead again. Now, my friend is pretty sure that his battery was at least half-charged but to me it seems very strange that my ibook would drain away all power from a battery in 10 seconds. Can it be a short circuit ???
Back on Internet, I have discovered these Apple discussions, so before beginning unscrewing the whole ibook to replace the DC-in board (I understand this is not the easiest piece to change) I wanted to have your advice on something I might have missed with my "diagnosis".
Could it be the "famous" logic board everyone is complaining about ? The ibook was bought in August 2003 so I am still eligible for the replacement. Could it possibly be ? I though that ibooks with such a problem did boot up...
Sorry. I wrote too much. Thank you in advance for any help you might be willing to give me...
    ibook G3 900 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No problems with your English whatsoever.
Have you tried your friend's adapter with the iBook? Was your iBook plugged into the adapter when it rapidly discharged your friend's battery? It could be an adapter problem. The adapter should show green when the battery is not installed, and amber when it is — exactly the opposite of what you are seeing. The amber light is supposed to indicate that the battery is charging. The green light means that it is NOT charging. When things are working right, the green light means the battery has stopped charging because it is completely charged. When things aren't working right, it just means the battery isn't charging — for whatever reason. Since your adapter is showing the lights the opposite of what it is supposed to do, it's an indication that it may not be working right.
These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge:
    (1) there is something wrong with your battery
    (2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
    (3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
    (4) there is something wrong with your logic board
To diagnose a bad DC-in board, you need to make sure it isn't the battery or the adapter at fault by swapping out first one and then the other, If it runs from a known good charged battery okay, but won't run from a known good adapter, then you are going to have to replace the power input board.
Usually, if it is a logic board problem, the iBook simply will not run from the battery. This happened to mine. The battery showed up in the battery status indicator. It was recognized by the computer and charged by the adapter (as shown by the battery status indicator). However, when I unplugged the adapter from the iBook, it was just like pulling the power cord from the wall on a desktop. The iBook immediately shutdown. Dead.
My husband’s problem was quite obviously the power input (DC-in) board because the adapter tip had broken off in the port. Often (and, sadly, in our case), this damages the power input board so that it no longer functions, necessitating replacement of the board as well as the broken adapter.
Your experience does not exactly match either of ours. It is my best hunch that if your adapter is not the problem, then it is the logic board and not the DC-in board at fault. However, this is not the problem covered by the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program.
Since you already have the extra DC-in board, if it proves not to be the adapter at fault, you may want to try installing the DC-in board, in hopes that will correct the problem.
    Good luck.

  • Laptop won't start? Please help!!!

    Hello,
When my computer was left uncharged, it died. And it wouldn't turn back on, as strangely it wouldn't charge (the light on the charger just didn't light up).So I tried and tried for a couple of days and nothing worked. I though it was my charger so I bought a new one but that wasn't the problem.
So I took it to Apple and they tried charging it at the time and it worked just fine. It magically turned on ?!!
Thus I took my laptop back today as according to the people in Apple my laptop was perfectly fine.
Today when my laptop was 100% charged I took the charger out and started watching a movie. Suddenly it died and the same thing is happening
It just won't charger. And since it won't charge it won't turn on....
    PLEASE HELP ME

  • Entourage won't start..Please help

I'm trying to open Entourage and it just won't open. The "E" in the dock bounces twice then nothing. Word opens fine. Yesterday I did a software update.I have 10.4.8. I tried reinstalling Entourage but still won't open. Tried opening in Safe Mode too. No luck. Have not tried reinstalling OSX yet.
Here are the events that lead up to this--
    1) Did software update.
    2) Installed Powerpoint from disk to view a document. After install "PP" would not open. Just got the warning "The application PowerPoint shut down unexpectedly....etc, etc"
    3) Installed "TonicPoint Viewer" to view PP document.
4)Tried to open Entourage. Entourage won't open.
    5) Reinstalled Entourage from disk. Still won't open.
If someone has any ideas, please help. I have lots of business stuff I just can't afford to loose.
Also, does anyone know where the email is stored on the hard drive? I have looked and can't find anything. If I can't get Entourage to start I might be able to at least get the data.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Exit terminal.
    Should work fine now

  • My macbook won't start up.. help please!

i can't make my macbook start up.. i've been trying to hold the "C" key as said in the instruction. i want to reformat or reinstall the Mac OSx so i can delete all the files because i'm planning to sell my macbook... help.. thanks a lot...

Exactly what are you doing and exactly what happens? With Lion you would do this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
If you are trying to boot from an installer DVD, then do this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Brand new macbook won't start up.  Help.

I recently received a brand new macbook as a graduation gift about 3 weeks ago. All has been absolutely fine until yesterday. I checked my email in the morning, closed the macbook and left for work. When I came home, I opened the macbook and pushed the power button. The screen flashed for a split second and remained black. No start up sound. The power light is on, battery light on the bottom says it's fully charged. When it's plugged in, the charging light is orange. Otherwise, no signs of life. I have an appointment tomorrow to meet with someone at the macstore, but I'm impatient and highly stressed and wonder what the problem is and what will be done about it.
    Thanks.

  • PB won't start up please help

Hi everyone, I cant seem to get my computer to start up and I'd really appreciate some help. When I try and start my g4 PB running 10.4, instead of the normal start up chime, I get a beeping sound and the screen stays black. The status light on the front near the cd drive blinks. I shut it down, took out the battery and waited 15 minute and then it started up the OS, however it froze shorty after and gave me the "You need to restart your computer" message. When I restart it, I get the same black screen with the beeping noise and I haven't been able to do anything. It won't repsond when I try and boot from the disk or to boot in saftey mode. My OS is completely updated and the computer is not even 6 months old. Any suggestions would really help. Thanks a lot.
    Sofi

The beeping sound that you hear on startup, does it only last for a short period (ie. like one, two or three beeps)? If so it could be that the memory in your PowerBook is either unseated or has become defective. Therefore I would check that by making sure the RAM is fully and firmly seated.

I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it numerous times and nothing happens. Ive run out of options of what to do.

  • My safari won't start! Please help?

I click on the safari icon and it just bounces but wont open up someone have any suggestions?
    please & thank you!
    Ima G5   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

    Hi James,
So you are running Safari Beta 3.?? now,
    SafariStand, Concierge and BookDog.
Many third party safari add on are not compatible w/ Safari 3, the
developers need to update, I am not sure if the 3 you mention are including but the behaviour of S 3 points to that there maybe an issue with them.
What I wish I could do is uninstall Safari and reinstall the latest non-beta version, which I assume is 2.0.4. But I can't find the 2.0.4 version as a stand alone program, much less an uninstaller program just for Safari. All I can find is the 3.0 beta and a 2.0.1 updater. Doesn't Apple realize that sometime Mac users need to simply reinstall one piece of software. Now I know it's probably on my Tiger install disk but that's going to take me back several versions and I have to wonder how easy that will be to upgrade.
James- The way you get Safari 2.0.4 back is to run the Uninstaller that came, with the Safari 3 beta download, that will revert your copy of Safari back to 2.0.4.
Do not use your mac when the installer is running if you decide to uninstall Beta,
If this doesn't help please post a new topic in the Safari 3 for mac forum this is the regular Safari forum.
    Good luck, keep us posted.

)And make sure dina.dhcp.2wire.com can be solved against an IP. On the other hand, it seems like you are getting your IP from a dhcp server. Even though you could start your services, it is advisable to use a fixed IP address or have a loopback adapter properly configured, otherwise you may face configuration issues with the EM DB Control Console.

  • Macbook won't turn on - please help!

    Hello,
Since last night I haven't been able to turn my macbook on. I was using it and then closed it but did not turn it off or put it to sleep. A few hours later I opened it, but the screen remained black. If I press the start button I can hear the fans start up and the light on the side comes on as if it were asleep but that is it. I've tired resetting the PRAM and SMC. Is there anything else I can try to make it do something or is bringing it to the genius bar my only option now?

I am having the same issue. My computer is still under warranty so ill bring it back. But chances are it may be the battery. If you are not under warranty you can try to remove the battery and plug the power cable up to the device without the battery in and try to power it on.
