  • Macbook OSX 10.5.8 - switches on, makes the usual noise  - then screen goes black. Is it dead?! Can't try anything at all as it simply won't stay on. Had a new battery 4 months ago too.

My old macbook switches on briefly, makes the usual sound - then goes black and silent. It has occasionally switched itself off recently - but then come back on again after a moment a few presses of the power button. It has a new battery 4 months ago after the previous one expanded....Given I can't get it to turn on I can't try anything. Should I go straight to Apple Genius bar?

Hi. Are you running 10.5.8 and do you have the install disk? You could try a pram reset. Hold down Command/Option/P/R key on startup for three chimes and continue boot. If you have the install disk, you could boot to it then use the disk utilities off it to check or repair your drive and permissions. If you have a newer operating system you may have a recovery partition.

  • My new Macbook air won't connect to my Vizio HDTV.

My new Macbook Air won't connect to my Vizio VO32LF HDTV.  I bought a mini-displayport to HDMI cable to connect the two.  When I connect the cable, and switch to the appropriate HDMI input on the TV, my Macbook Air screen will flash blue for a second, and then return to normal.  The TV reports it's unable to find a signal.  I use the HDTV as my primary monitor, so I'd really appreciate some help on getting the two to place nicely together!

    Cp,
Thanks for the reply. However, it appears that the issue is not with the hotspot, but with the network settings in the MacBook Air as every other device I have (including non-Apple devices) will connect to the iPhone hotspot. Another symptom is that my MacBook Air can find my iMac (and other network devices) on my wireless network, but the iMac can't find the MacBook Air.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot with new hard drive, but a different MacBook Pro will

So here are the details. My friend and I both have 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro's. Same processor and specs since they were purchased at the same time, but originally had 250 GB hard drives. His hard drive failed and needed a new one. Put a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6 in his computer, and tried using a flash drive with "Install OS X Mavericks" on it to install Mavericks on his new hard drive. No matter what, it wouldn't install. I finally was able to install OS X 10.9.4 on it by connecting the new hard drive to my computer with a USB hard drive enclosure. I put the hard drive back inside his computer and it wouldn't boot (stuck on the gray screen with apple logo and a spinning wheel). I then attached to the hard drive to his computer externally with the USB enclosure, and then it booted and worked perfectly.
So, it seemed like the problem was with something inside his computer, but then I switched our drives, and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I put my original hard drive into his computer, and his new hard drive into my computer, and they both booted and worked perfectly, so I have no idea why his computer will not boot with the new hard drive internally.
To summarize, his computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally (won't work if it's internal), and 2) my hard drive internally
but my computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally AND internally, and 2) my hard drive internally.
Both hard drives have OS X 10.9.4 installed
If anyone has any idea what's causing this and how to make his computer work with the new hard drive internally that would be greatly appreciated.

So after switching the internal SATA cables from each computer, now we have
His computer, with my SATA cable:
    1) Worked with every hard drive!
My computer, with his SATA cable:
    1) Works with 1 TB Toshiba hard drive
    2) Works with 500 GB Seagate hard drive
    3) Works with my original hard drive
    4) Flashing folder with question mark with his old hard drive
So it turns out you were right! Definitely had something to do with the SATA cables. But it's still strange that mine was able to boot with all the hard drives except the one that was originally in his. So it seems like it was some combination of his SATA cable and something else, since when his SATA cable was in his computer only 1 hard drive (my original) worked, and when it was in my computer, 3 hard drives worked. But at least its working, and I'm just gonna keep our SATA cables switched since that seems to work out fine

  • My new Macbook Pro won't start.

Hello. So today i got my new MacBook Pro 13''. I started to use it and competely emptied battery. Now i can't turn it on, it don't charge and my MagSafe charge don't blink. What do i do? It's my first Mac and first problem in first day, it makes me mad.

I'm having a similar problem and I'm ready to explode. I have a huge work deadline tomorrow and can't get the work done. My 4 month old macbook pro won't charge anymore. I'm now on an old pc desperately searching for help.
I switched to my first mac because everyone said how great they were. Since when does a nearly new laptop stop charging? apparently this is a common problem and my sales person did not inform me when I asked specifically about potential bugs. I am furious, frustrated and very unhappy with this. Apple, you suck tonight.
Here's the problem: The light on the magsafe adapter did not work this evening when I tried to charge it. I did nothing out of the ordinary. It was on the desk and I plugged it in as usual.  I spent an hour on the phone and online trying to get apple support to no avail. Apparently their 24/7 line is not 24/7 in Canada?
I cannot remove the battery as the site says, so I'm completely screwed at the mercy of this bullcrap brand. I did everything advised on the site, including checking the SMC and the cord itself. With only 20 minutes left and the battery ticking, I tried to email myself all the files I need, but they're huge and just when it was near finishing, the battery went from 10 to 21 minutes and it shut down.
Now it won't turn on, of course. The little button on the side has only one green light flashing. The adapter does nothing. NO red or green like before.
I am at my cottage and do not have an apple dealer nearby. Who can I scream at for this? All my previous computers could be easliy fixed when things go wrong. Remind me what is so great about this overpriced mean little machine!%^%!^*%&!(
WHY does a NEW laptop that costs a premium have such a fragile adapter / battery?  Is there another adapter I can use to charge it? I'm at my wit's end.

  • Should I switch to Mac?   Considering the New Macbook pro 13"

    Hello,
I am not a mac user and am contemplating switching to mac as I am looking forward to get a new laptop.
I am considering getting a Macbook pro 13" the basic model but I also came across a Sony Vaio 'E' series laptop. The Sony has full HD screen, 500 GB, blu ray drive and an i3 processor. The rest of the specifications are similar to the mac.
Moreover the Sony with its better specifications is a bit cheaper than the mac.
I cannot decide on whether to switch to mac or just get the Sony Vaio.
Hope you guys can help me out in making a decision.
    Thank you.

    Zane.a,
Welcome to Apple Discussions. I won't go into the specifics of the Sony you are looking at because specifications mean very little, what is important is the experience of using a PC and the experience of using a Mac. Many PC users tend to get hung up on computer specifications, which CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, etc.. One thing you cannot do on a PC is run OS X where with a Mac you can run both OS X and MS Windows. In fact there are several excellent solutions (Fusion, Parallels & Bootcamp) for doing so. In addition Mac's tend to have better build quality and certainly have better resale value.
Apple has some sites I would recommend you look over. One is called:
    Switch 101
    and the other is
    Mac 101
These sites provide useful tips, information and videos.
While Windows 7 is a good OS however it still doesn't have the same experience as OS X. With Windows 7 you still have to worry about about malware including virus's and pay annual fees to keep your antivirus software up to date.
If you need support Apple has the best in the industry. Here in the US when I need help I get someone within 30 seconds on the phone that is local, isn't reading off a script and generally is knowledgeable. Over the years when I've had occasion to call my question is almost always handled on the first call. When I used to own PC's when I had to call support I dealt with someone that frequently was nice but didn't have the knowledge and I also had language barriers and had difficulty understanding. I know it was frustrating for me and must have also been frustrating for the engineer I was dealing with.
Remember specifications are just that and many times have nothing to do with the user experience. What I'd recommend is spending time with both platforms in a store and then decide for yourself which one best suits your style.
If you choose a Mac great, if you don't I hope you enjoy your Windows machine.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • My Brand New MacBook Won't Start Up!!!!!

My new MacBook won't start up - from the first time I ever switched it on!!!
All I have is a black screen, the sleep light is on either permanently or flashing and now the install disc is stuck in the drive and I can't get it out!
    Help please!

From my experience, resetting the PRAM and PMU do not work in this situation, at least with my MacBook. I have a feeling that 10.4.7 update didn't flash correctly or the firmware is buggy in some way.

  • MacBook Pro won't switch on

My 2011 MacBook Pro just died all of a sudden. There is no battery light on the side, the machine won't switch on despite trying the shift+Ctrl+option and power switch combo. Also the light on the mag power supply doesn't come, for some reason my 2 year old MacBook Pro is completely dead for no reason.
    Can someone please help?
    Many thanks.

Did you have any liquids around it? You may have water damage if you did. Did you ever charge your mac while it wasn't on reserve power or any percentage around that area? That sometimes weares out the battery. Ive heard with these cases you need a completely new mac. Not true! You can easily replace the battery or have it replaced. Actually, if you go into best buy's geek squad, they can trouble shoot any problems for you. The only problem is that it is usually expensive to fix. When I still had my PC, the geek squad guy said it isnt worth it to have my PC troubleshooted for him only to come back and say "Your PC has tobe replaced". You can also go to the Apple store where they are more directed on Mac products. If you have insurance fo your Mac, you should be fine. I know a Mac comes with the 1 year insurance but yours is 2 years old. If you have insurance, its your choice to easily get a new mac or get it fixed. Also, if you had icloud or backed up your mac, your files and data should be saved on another device. If not, that may be a problem if you had important files there. Things in the itunes store like music and books can be redownloaded. Hope this helps. Good Luck. Hope your Mac feels better.

  • I know have a mobile me account and so my apple id is switched from my email address.  i am trying to update my apps but it won't let me as it won't recognize my new 'ID'. how can i fix this on my iphone?

I have mobile me account now and so my apple id is switched from my email address to my mobile me address.  Since I have made this change I can't update my apps. Everytime I try to sign in it won't recognize the switch. I have updated all the proper information on my iphone, however, when updating apps it still shows my apple id as my email address and not the mobile me account address. I am not sure what else to do???  I have even sync'd my iphone and tried to do it through my pc, however, it says that it can't update (nothing to update). I have ten updates sitting on my iphone apps...What to do...what to do?  Very confused.

Where are you trying to log in? You should be able to change your ID at http://appleid.apple.com - can you log in there?
Before you change your ID you should log out of the iTunes Store and on any devices which are logged into iCloud. Then once you've changed it you can log back in with the new ID. (Your iCloud synced data will disappear from the device when you do this but will reappear when you sign back in - give it time).
If you are unable to sign into http://appleid.apple.com you will need to contact Support. Go to http://iforgot.apple.com and sign in with your iCloud login. A new password will be sent to your associated email address. If this doesn't work you will have to contact Support. Go to https://getsupport.apple.com . Click' See all products and services', then 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID', then 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'. If you have any problems with that try this form: https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

  • Hello, Im new to this website. Im having issues with my Macbook. I have the old 2009 model Macbook and it is our schools macbook. The school just upgraded these MacBooks to OSX Mavericks and when i try to open Minecraft it won't let me. It says no jd

Hello, Im new to this website. Im having issues with my Macbook. I have the old 2009 model Macbook and it is our schools macbook. The school just upgraded these MacBooks to OSX Mavericks and when i try to open Minecraft it won't let me. It says no jdk installed. I also try to install Java SE runtime but half way through the Software Update it says cant download software because of network problem but I'm connected to the internet and i can browse stuff just fine. Can any one help with my problems. P.S. I don't know the administrator password or stuff like that. And yes we are allowed to play games and stuff on these laptops but only at home not at school so don't tell me i need to focus on school and not games.

Since you updated the operating system, it is probably Minecraft is missing certain files that ware remove or are not longer comparable with the new version of the OSX. what I recommend, is to check is there is an update for Minecraft and install that. If there is not update available, probably the best thing will be reinstalling Minecraft. Hope this will help you.

  • Im trying to watch movies from my macbook pro to my new vizio, but when I connect the minidisplayport to HDMI cable to input 2, and switch the input from my remote to that input, nothing happens.  What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to watch movies from my macbook pro (2010) on my new vizio tv.  I connected the minidisplayport to HDMI cable (bought from the apple store) and switched the input to the right input but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi T,
Open Sys Prefs > Displays and check the settings there.

  • I am trying to authorise my new macbook air and it won't let me. I try to de-authorise all the other computers and it says I can only do this once a year and have to wait until the 7th Feb. It does not give me an option to authorise this computer

I am trying to authorise my new macbook air for i-tunes and it won't let me. I try to de-authorise all the other computers and it says I can only do this once a year and have to wait until the 7th Feb. It does not give me an option to authorise this computer

Always remember to 'de-authorize' you computer when selling or sending for service. If sending for repairs you might not get the same mother board or HD back and some how this counts as an authorized computer against your count.

  • External Trackpad won't switch desktops on MacBook Pro

I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro and I recently purchased a standalone wireless keyboard and trackpad. The trackpad performs all of the gestures correctly, except for the four-finger swipe to switch between desktops. The built-in trackpad performs the four-finger swipe perfectly fine. I checked the System Preferences for the trackpad, but it looks like there's only one set of preferences for all trackpads.
My wife has a similar setup with her new iMac and she doesn't have the problem. Both trackpads switch desktops with a four-finger swipe. Weird, eh?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that the issue might be that there is no boot0 in /usr/standalone/i386. I have had similar issues lately when trying to make a bootable usb memory. I think this is necessary for the legacy option in the bless utility. If some one have a solution for this I would like to know as well.

  • My quandary is how to transfer EVERYTHING from a Macbook pro that won't boot up to a new one, will the usual linking with a firewire lead still work?

I have an early intel Macbook Pro that wouldn't wake from sleep and won't now boot up, i'm just going to replace it with a new 13" i5 but i need to transfer the last five years of my life off the dead one to the new one, there's nearly 3 grand of music software and mp3's before i even think about the 10 years of photographs and videos, some of it is backed up but i ideally want to just transfer it all over.
what are my options? will linking the two together with a firewire or similar still be possible without the old one booting up (it still has power and turns on but the sleep light is constantly lit but very dim, the hard drive does sound like it's spinning up) or am I best removing the old Hard drive and putting it in an external case, would I be able to access directories and folders or could i boot up off an external drive or would there be hardware compatibility problems?
without sounding off i'd appreciate any complicated processes be explained in beginner to intermediate levels of "GEEK" i'm far from a pro but should be able to muddle through!!!
you've no idea how much any help with this will be appreciated!!!

Since the old MBP is dead the only option is to remove the hard drive and use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to get all your stuff off the old drive.
One note though make sure you use the same user name and passord on your new MBP as you had on the old one.
As to software hopefully you have all the license information written down other wise you may have a hard time reinstalling some of it. Also be aware that OS X Lion will not run older PPC software. So if you have older programs that used Rosetta to run it will not run on Lion.
    Good luck with everything.

  • Recently got a new iPod 4th gen; I had previously backed up to iCloud and subscribed to iTunes Match, and then wound up syncing the new iPod to my MacBook Pro; all iCloud tunes were downloaded to Mac but won't all sync to the iPod - any suggestions?

Recently got a new iPod Touch 4th gen; I had previously backed up to iCloud and subscribed to iTunes Match, and then wound up syncing the new iPod to my MacBook Pro; all iCloud tunes were downloaded to Mac but won't all sync to the iPod after multiple attempts, despite all songs showing properly on the Mac and multiple syncs occurring after all songs were properly reflected on the Mac.  I updated iTunes Match from the iTunes Store menu as well pre-sync.
I should mention that I had previously had the library on a Dell (which is still running) and shared it on my home network.  While all iTunes purchases now show in the Dell, the Mac is the device I use for all syncs.
There appears to be no rhyme or reason to the iCloud physical sync failure - some songs were legacy, some were purchased via the PC, some on the old iPod.
The Mac shows all the songs correctly and none show iCloud status -all have been downloaded, but the downloaded songs that were previously showing up as iCloud based aren't syncing to the iPod.
Is there any way to force all music being seen by my iPod as iCloud to download to so I can listen to them offline?  Is there a way to force the sync from iTunes?

The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts.  Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.
