  • Serious issues with iMac, black screen during erase and install-PLEASE HELP

My sister's Intel iMac G5 seriously has been a lemon, it has had SO many issues. It's now 2 years old, and has been rather slow for the maybe the last year, but over the last month or so it has gone way downhill, and it literally takes an hour to boot up, and 4-5 minutes to do anything (open an application, look at a photo in iPhoto, etc.). So, we've been trying to "erase and install" with her install discs to hopefully give the computer a clean boot and see if it helps at all. She has already backed everything up.
She started the erase and install last night, and it was going ridiculously slow. This morning when she woke up, the blue progress bar had gone about half way across. Then she went to get her kids ready, and when she came back in it looked like the computer was rebooting itself (gray screen with apple), but then the screen turned black and she can't do anything on it. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?
We have had so much trouble getting this to work (we tried an archive and install a few days ago, but it gave her an error at the end). For about a day we couldn't even get the computer to boot up at all, but then miraculously yesterday morning it booted! Please help, I've converted her to Macs but if I can't get hers fixed she may never get one again!!

I'm afraid that it's a contradiction in terms to talk about an intel iMac G5. What your sister has is an intel machine, and she will find good advice by posting to the [intel iMac Forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1110].

  • Black screen with "Insert boot disk"

    Hi, there everyone!
So here's the epilogue to my story.
I wanted to install Windows 7 on my late 2011 MBP running Lion. Went to Bootcamp to get the process done, as I get there I see that I'm lacking the option to make a start up disk on a usb, so I looked up ways to change that. After many days of searching and trying I stumbled upon the option to change coding on  the info.plist file inside the package contents of Bootcamp. When I was done changing a few things (as directed to online) Bootcamp then no longer would open, only bounce on the dock then close. I tried turning back the clock with Time Machine with no avail. I was left with an error built into the system, and thus forcing me to upgrade to Mavericks.
    Now my current issue:
After upgrading, I once again tried to change BC to allow me to use a USB instead of a DVD to install Windows. Once again, desperately, I changed the info.plist in Bootcamp (leaving an original copy of the file, and changing the duplicate) in order to do so. This time with success!
After already having saved the "latest Windows support software from Apple" from when I was on Lion, I skipped this step and proceeded to transfer the .iso file I had to the usb thumb drive. Successful!
From there, I then went on to partition 35 GB of space on my HD to windows and just let the magic happen!
Only (this is were the real question comes in) when the system restarted, post-partition, I was left with (as the title says) the black screen with "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
So my question is: Where is the "any" key???
Haha sorry about that, just had to!
But in all seriousness, I was left with the Boot screen and my usb drive sticking out of it containing the file needed to boot Windows 7.
I've tried everything I possibly could:
Restarting on mac, ejecting USB, then sticking it in when the boot screen comes up.
Putting the .iso on a DVD and trying it the original way.
Restarting with no DVD or USB in then placing them in after the boot screen.
Even restoring my partition, repartitioning the HD, and then re-installing the .iso file on the thumb drive once more all over again in an attempt to get it working.
    All with no luck.
I've been scouring all over the internet looking for the solution for days to this problem before I took it upon myself to ask the community.
If anyone can offer any insight to what else is left for me to try with Bootcamp would be immensely, appreciated!
If worst comes to worst I may be forced to try Parallels or VMWare Fusion to get Windows 7 running on Mac, but I would much rather have Windows running independently on my Mac for games, rather than having a Virtual Machine slow down the gaming experience.
    Thank you!
(P.S. And sorry about the length!)

So, I decided to restore my Mac into factory settings?
If you want to do that, you have to boot the Mac from your Mac OS X Install disc by inserting the disc, then restart while holding down the 'C' key until you see the Apple logo. Then you choose your language (English) and let the installer do it's thing.
To remove a CD that failed to eject, you startup the Mac while holding down the mouse button (trackpad button on a laptop) until the drive ejects.
    So, I tried boot camp.
Don't do that. Boot Camp has nothing to do with this; it's for running Windows on your Mac.
I tried to press the on button, to try and force shut down - failed.
You have to hold it for about 6 seconds for it to shutdown. Did you do that?
I tried pressing the Option key, which I assume is the key with the alt on it, right??
Why would you need the Option key for this?

  • WINDOWS BLACK SCREEN AFTER VM WARE DEMO PLEASE HELP

I tried installing VM Ware Fusion Demo. I could not use my wireless mouse and keyboard, now I can't even startup with Windows. I get a black screen. Please help!

Go into safemode and uninstall the Nvidia driver you have installed and after restarting the computer and allowing extra time for windows to install a default driver for the graphics, install the Windows 7 driver for your computer found in the Toshiba download page for your laptop.
If you have issues with the screen blacking out after doing that, follow the instructions found here and this will correct that.

  • My camera is not working, just a black screen, won't take pics please help

WWhy won't my camera take pics..just a black screen ?

CClose the camera app and reset the iPad.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

    - Try a reset.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then connect to your computer and try to restore.
    - See if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow a restore. For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - If the logo still show all the time, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the above again.

  • Macbook Crashed and Only White Screen Now!!! Please HELP!

    Hey guys,
I'm sorry if this problem has already been posted and have been answered but can someone help me too!
Just 10 minutes ago i was using my macbook. everything perfect as normal after 8 months right now and then i was just on my itunes and surfing the net at the same time and then all the sudden my macbook frooze on me and the spinning rainbow was my mouse and like the music paused as well.
and then it wouldnt let me force quit or anything so then i just held the power button and it turned off. but before i did... all i could hear was the harddrive or .. maybe something else... bottom right corner of the macbook so right side to the mousepad. it kept making cracking noises .
then after 10 seconds i turned it on again and the mac start up sound ...sounded and then it was just a white blank screen. and then the cracking noise kept going and then after awhile of nothing i tried restarting it again and again and finally at this one time it gave me the Folder with the ?!!
and then i read the manual and it said to put in the cd. so i did and it doesnt even read it.. its just a white screen
I dont know whats wrong! im only on the 8th month!will apple fix this? i have all my lecture notes on it and .. my exams are 2 weeks from now!
Please help me! im sorry about my spelling and grammer!
    Thanks in advance !

    Hey all!
Well I went with the problem that it was my hard drive and since i was still under the 1 year warranty i thought i would just call apple up for fun!!
They were nice enough to answer my questions without me going for the Apple Care for $299.99 or $59.99 that call and said i went through everything and it seems like i've been doing a good job but it must be the hard drive.
So then i bought it into a Authorize Apple Dealer and they fixed it up for me.
However, they said its usually a 99% that they cant recover my hard drive, which came to a bummer because i lost all my lecture notes and a project that i was working on thats due tomorrow :S!!
but hey !! its like brand new again
just wanted to share my story so that atleast if you have the same problem! It might be similar to my situation.

  • Black screen but this is different please help!

    Hello!
Yesterday when I booted my iBook the screen was black (not just no backlight - totally black). Then I connected it to an external monitor and BOTH worked, my iBook screen was back and the monitor was OK.
BUT afterwards I wanted to start it again without the external monitor and now the screen is always black again.
I had the inverter and the reed cable (?) both repaired last year. They should not be the problem.
If I understand it right it is not the logic board because the video worked with an external monitor.
(I had the logic board repaired years ago and I am out of warranty now.)
PR-ram, PMU etc. resetting didn't help.
    Does anyone have any advice?

Usually when the graphics chip is loose, the video on an external monitor is just as bad as the iBook's own display. It's possible for the iBook to work intermittently, however, so that may have happened with yours.

  • Black screen after 10.51 update, please help!

Installed Leopard on external F/W drive , although could not repair permissions on drive.I installed 10.51 then, display went black, and would not come on. Forced the machine to turn off. Disconnected external drive, pulled all the A/C cords, etc. Finally got it to start on the old Tiger OS on the internal drive.
Just got off the phone with Applecare and they gave me the old "We do not support 3rd party hardware". My external drive is a OWC 911 chipset drive with Tiger on the partition so I don't get it.
Is there perhaps something different about Leopard that precludes you from installing it on an external firewire drive?
    Does Anyone have any ideas?

If cd boot was okay and attrib bcd was not, then the the bcd is apparently missing. Bad news. Time to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
Are there important files to recover first?
Even recovery with "0" is impossible, though it did work fine previous to this.
If the recovery discs were not created,  you can obtain them from Toshiba.

  • BLACK SCREEN WHEN MBP WAKES UP, PLEASE HELP!

This has occurred before and I read somewhere on the discussion boards that if you install the leopard dvd again, then click on terminal and type something in and quit installer the screen wakes up, but I forgot where I saw this thread, can anyone help me?
    thank you

I can't help you with the thread but what I say might be similar to what you are thinking of.
Startup from the installation dvd by holding the C key at startup until the Apple logo appears. On the first screen select language. On the next screen choose Disk Utility from the Tools menu. Select your hard drive then Repair Disk. If repairs are needed and completed rerun the Repair disk to check that no more repairs are needed. If DU is unable to repair the disk you might need a service call although there are shareware programs that might be able to resolve the issue.
If no repairs were needed use DU again but this time choose Repair permissions and repeat this if there is a list of repairs done.
Restart normally after all this and see whether startup proceeds as it ought.

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up.

Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up. I've tried inserting the Mac OS X install disc to run the hardware test(Restart and hold down D), But it still does nothing. Just the black screen. Now I can't get the disc out. I've tried holding down the track pad key upon start up but that doesn't work neither.
What do I do??? Please help.

Remove the battery to find your serial number in the battery bay. Then you can look your MBP up on EveryMac.com:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
That will give you all the information on your Mac.
This is assuming that you have the MBP with the removable battery and not the unibody. The unibody has different graphic chips.
    Good luck!
