Try Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC), but if that fails then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Macbook wont powerup, beeps repeatedly when power button is pressed and you need to hold the power button down to shut the beeping off. any thoughts?

Have a 13" macbook. wont power up. upon hitting power button, the computer sounds 3 long beeps constantly until you hold the power button down for 5-10 seconds. any thoughts out there?

  • MacBook Pro Hard-Drive and MagSafe Power Adaptor

I have just purchased a 15.4" MacBook Pro (Model number A1150) from eBay. The system was sold as being for spares or repair and because I'm up for a challenge and desperate to break away from my ties to Windows and move into the Mac world I thought I try the 'repair' route.
The system I have is model number A1150.  It dates from early 2006 and has a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor.  Having opened the case up I found there is no hard drive installed so I need to purchase a new one.  I know that the system shipped with an 80Gb SATA hard drive but I don’t have any more detailed information than that.  Is anybody able to advise me what make, model and full specification of hard-drive I need to purchase to help bring this machine back to life?
In addition, the system did not have a MagSafe power adaptor so I need to purchase a new one.  The technical specifications show that I need to get hold of an 85w MagSafe adaptor, but I believe there are different types of adaptor available now.  Could somebody let me know what type of adaptor I need?
Thanks in advance – I’m sure I’ll have some more questions as I hit new obstacles!

  • Macbook wont switch on?

When i try to switch on my macbook nothing happens ans when i plug in my charger it has a faint green light.
I have never had this problem before but i have tried many troubleshoots and none would work
    Please help.

I'm having this exact same problem.  Tried resetting the SMC but no luck.
Little bit more background: two nights ago when I closed up my MB (early 2008, black), I heard a loud spinning sound as if there was a DVD in the drive, but there wasn't.  It woke up fine, so I put it back down and charged it.  The next night, yeterday, it seemed to be working fine, battery was at about 100%, and then all of a sudden it just shut down and now it won't boot.  I'm getting nothing... no beeps, no screen, nothing.  When it's plugged in the green light on the power adapter comes on.  When I tap the button on the battery (whether or not it's plugged in), the first LED blinks for 5 seconds, indicating that the battery is dead, but it doesn't charge when it's plugged in.
I'm sure I'm well beyond the 300 cycles, but I don't want to buy a new battery unless I'm sure that's the only issue.  What do you guys recommend?

  • Fan running constant at 6200rpm only when connected to the Power Adaptor!

My fans are runing constant at at 6200 rpm, the temperature is around 50 degrees Celsius.
No other processes running in the background Activity Monitor shows around 2-3 usage after reboot.
I did a reset of the SMC.
Funny thing is, if the MacBook is not connected to the Power Adaptor, running with the battery, the fan is running at normal speed between 1500 and 3000 (depending on what programs i use) and has the same temperature at around 50 degrees.
I am sure that it is not the Power Adaptor, i have two, one at the office and one at home, and the MacBook is only loud, connected to the Power Adaptor.
3 Year Extended Waranty just run out 3 weeks ago...
Any hints or ideas which part could be broken and should be replaced?
Is there some sort of Power Management Unit?

I did a reset of the SMC (see my first post). Did not help.
Actually i did everthing you can do, including a fresh install (10.5.6) and not updating to 10.5.7 (some had problems with their fans updating to 10.5.7), also a Harware check, safe boot, etc. Did not help at all. Now running again with 10.5.7.
I was wondering if there is a actual hardware part i can replace.
My stoneaged Powerbook had some sort of a circuit board that managed the chareging of the battery, etc. This board could be replaced.
Or do i have to accept it, that my MacBook believes to be a helicopter now.

  • I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.

I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.
    Good luck,

Try resetting the System Mangement Controller -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.
If that has no effect, then your only recourse is to take your machine to your local Apple Store/AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine.

  • I bought the Snow Leopard Update but now my macbook wont even accept the DVD and keeps ejecting it. This is the same for all DVDs.

I have a very old (refurbished, bought over 4 years ago) macbook pro 15". It's been running ok on OS X 10.5.8 until very recently. It started ejecting disks, and then the new adobe flash player update wouldn't work. Lots of other little things have been happening as well.
I had been considering buying a new macbook, but one of the Apple store people suggested I update instead (a much cheaper alternative!). So I bought Snow Leopard, and it arrived in the post today. But now my macbook wont even accept the dvd. It takes it in, whirs and complains a bit (for less than 60 seconds) then ejects it again. I have tried cleaning the disk, cleaning the disk area with a credit card + lens cleaner (a trick I saw recommended on this forum). But no luck.
    Any advice?
I am a trainee teacher and actually will be gutted to have to get a new laptop (as I really cant afford it). BUT obviously if I have to I will. I just need to extend the life of this one for as long as possible, until I have more money to get a better one!

Bring your MBP to an Apple store genius bar and see what they say about your MBP optical drive.
Look on the OWC web site.  They sell optical drives for older MBPs.  Perhaps there is one that will fit yours.  Installing one is not brain surgery.
Otherwise examine the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites for replacements.
    Ciao.

My macbook seems to be going crazy. At certain points (and for hours) I get the oh snap page on chrome, safari doesnt work, macbook wont let me create any files or for example upload music to itunes. I restored my mac so im sure its not a malware problem. The only thing that solves it is switching off and on , but sometimes I have to do that for 6-7 times before its ok or wait for a few hours. Some help please

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Macbook will not start up with power cord plugged in

    hi,
my macbook core duo, wont startup anymore with the power cord.
It does work with a battery though. But the problem is that the cord is not charging the battery anymore and not even giving power to the machine.
the light on the cord is green. I tried with another power cord, it does the same.
i even changed the dc-in board, with no luck.
    any ideas ?

I have the exact same problem. There is a buzz from the region where the power connection is, and I'm afraid it is a power hardware issue. Since the optical drive already quit on this first gen MacBook, I think it's time to chuck this lemon.
