My MacBookAir 11 Mid 2012 OSX 10.8.4 is intermittently restarting since an OS update.

I updated my MacBookAir 11 Mid 2012 from Lion a month or so ago & have ever since had this issue with the system intermitently freezing & restarting.  I then decided to finally upgarde to Mountain Lion.  Still the issue persisted so then I decided to try a clean install, however the problem is still there.  Please assist if you can ascertain the problem from my last crash report:

Try running in Safe Mode for a while and see if this stops. If so, then you need to uninstall all the software that's installing extensions:

Do you see any sound devices in Device Manager?
The following screen shot is from the same model you have running OS X 10.10.3 and W8.1. If you used EFI boot to force install W8.1, it will not work.
You can download drivers from System requirements to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp - Apple Support for your specific Mac and Boot Camp: Install or repair Boot Camp drivers and test.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2012 15" - one RAM slot gone bad

    Hi,
Has anyone ever had the issue with not working RAM slot? My MacBook Pro mid 2012 (non-retina) suddenly froze and after restart was beeping three times every few seconds. I found out that the beeping signals bad RAM. Bought new chips, and the problem still exists. My mac can now run on one slot with 4GB RAM.
I did check the placement of the chips in the slots, i also checked one slot at a time, and one of them has gone broken.
Any ideas on how to make it run again? or if it is possible to replace the slots?
    Brgds

    MacBook Pro 2,7GHz Intel Core i7 / OSX 10.9.4

The Apple-accepted cure for a dead RAM slot is a new logic board. Unless you ahve AppleCare, that will be an expensive fix.
An Apple service option is the "depot repair." Instead of working on your computer in the Apple Store, they send it to a centralized refurbishment facility where they fix anything they find wrong (except for cosmetic damage and damage from abuse like dropping) for a flat fee of a little over US$300. That is between 30 and 40 percent of the parts and labor charges if Apple installs a new board in an Apple Store. Sometimes they will install an new battery at the depot without increasing the flat fee.
The downside is that it takes about a week; for that level of cost savings, I could do without my computer for a week.
So take it to Apple and ask about a depot repair.
A low-tech and low-cost option is to expand on what you are doing now--using one slot. Although the official RAM limit on your model is 8GB RAM (two 4GB models), your model can actually handle a total of 16GB (two 8GB modules. You can ignore the dead slot and put an 8GB module in the good slot. My 2012 MBP has 8GB RAM and is completely happy running Mavericks.
Be sure to ONLY get the RAM from an Mac-savvy vendor. For over a decade I've bought all our Mac RAM from one supplier. This is their page for an 8GB module for your MBP model:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/1600DDR3S8GB/
I would also trust Crucial on this one. For a change they recognize that your model can use more RAM than stated in Apple's outdated specs:

  • Windows 7 too slow in MacPro Mid 2012

    Hi Gurus,
I have installed Windows 7 Home 64bit (by using boot camp) in Mac Book Pro Mid 2012 (OSX 10.7). I do not have any issues while installing, Windows 7 Instalation was completed successfully and Apple Drivers also.
After boot it is running very very slow (ex: Install Office 2007 took 60 mins, IE open 1 or 2 mins), I can not work in wondow7.
    Please guys help me out.
    Thanks
    Reddys

I'm experiencing exactly the same. Found some articles about re-burning the DVD but it hasn't helped.
My suspicion is that the BIOS (or mac equivalent) does not support booting 64bit OS. I remember trying to force OSX Leopard to boot 64bit and it wouldn't work. I can't recall the exact issue, but I suspect its similar.
I am installing Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in a Fusion VM - but not bootcamp - just a regular old VM. So far that is fine. Its not done yet but it is loading.
It may be as simple as a BIOS update - but as far as I know - there are none for my Xeon 3GhZ based system.
    oh well.

  • How do I fix a kernal panic on my mid 2012 macbook pro 13?

My Macbook Pro mid 2012 OSX version 10.7.5 has been crashing at least 15 times a day for 3 days. I'm working in a 3rd World Country without any Apple stores for support, so I'm really, really stuck. Can anybodykindly give me some advise? I have recently updated to Itunes 11.01 and started using ICloud, I have also bought and downloaded a few Apps and books in the past week. The problem seems to happen when I am not typing - when it is in sleep mode/standby.
I started running Norton for Macs yesterday and nothing comes up on the scans.
Here is the crash report. Can any of you guys help me fix this, please?

You can try reinstalling OS X. Turn Norton off or uninstall it first, then:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
    2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
    Any advice would be helpful!

    Hi lancekatigbak,
If you're having issues with the display out on your MacBook Pro, you may want to take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

  • I have a Mac Pro Intel Xeon 3.2 Ghz Quad core (mid 2012) using OSX 10.7.5) and cannot get iDVD to run.

I have a Mac Pro Intel Xeon 3.2 Ghz Quad core (mid 2012) using OSX 10.7.5) and cannot get iDVD to run. I tried 7.0.4 and 7.1.2, both from Apple software update and both crash during "loading themes". I am reluctant to upgrade OSX from 10.7.5 because I do not want to loose Final Cut Express 4.0.1. Apple Care no longer supports iDVD. I want a version if iDVD that supports Chapter markers as in iDVD 7.?.? that i used with my old (now deceased) Apple Power PC Mac Pro.

iDVD 7 should work fine with 10.7.5.  Try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
    User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • MB Pro Retina mid-2012 with OSX 10.9.5 no longer recognizes 2nd monitor

After the OSX 10.9.5 update, my MB Pro Retina mid-2012 started to crash whenever I had it connected to an external monitor via a VGA to Thunderbolt adapter. The crash Kernel report follows below.
After a couple of days my laptop stopped crashing, but now it won't detect any external monitor - none show up in the System Preferences/Displays. Tried a couple of different monitors ((VGA is the only available input for those). Running Diagnostics does not show any problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

iDVD 7 should work fine with 10.7.5.

  • HP Pavilion external monitor has stopped working with my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.8.3

HP Pavilion external monitor has stopped working with my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.8.3.  When I purchased the monitor a few weeks ago it worked perfectly when computer was in clamshell mode or with lid open. Now external display has stopped working.  When I turn on display it scans for signal but does not find it and then immediately goes into sleep mode.  I am using a DVI connection with the adapter for the mini display plug.  REALLY FRUSTRATING. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

    Hi lancekatigbak,
If you're having issues with the display out on your MacBook Pro, you may want to take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

  • Thunderbolt update V1.2 is not supported on my system: Mac Pro 12 Cores (mid 2012) with Mac OSX 10.8.3

I'm trying to connect an external 8 Tera thunderbolt hard drive to my Mac Pro 12 Cores (mid 2012) with Mac OSX 10.8.3, and it is not recognizad, so I tried to make the thunderbolt upgrade V1.2, and a windows appears and says: "this software is not supported on my system"
Please tell me waht to do.
    thanks a lot.

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays andhigh-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It sets new standards for speed, flexibility, and simplicity. And it’s on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.
I don't see mention of the Mac Pro.

Hi there, I have MacBook Air (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.8.2. I want to update to latest OSX but it is saying that I need to first install MBA Flash Firmware Update 1.1. When I try to install this firmware, I am told I should have OSX 10.8.3, Each one asking other to update first, can some one help me in this regard ?

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • HT3382 With a MacbookAir (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port, can you configure the external monitor to FULLY display in portrait mode yet keep the built-in display in landscape mode?

With an 11"-inch Macbook Air (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port:
Can you configure an extended desktop with an external monitor (20") displaying full portrait mode (1200 x 1600 resolution) and keep the built-in display in landscape?
I'd like to see something like
    External monitor / Built-in display

Yes, I can't see why not.
Just give it a try and report back if you have a problem.

  • Reproducible kernel panic on Mid 2012 MBA5,1 OSX 10.7.5

I'm 100% sure all these issues started after the latest upgrades. However, since I did the firmware one first and system one later I can't be sure which caused it. I did do a time machine backup just before the OS update, will the OS restore itself or just my user files? I think I'll have to do a complete restore from recovery partition.
Either way here are the issues.
Everytime I let the computer go into sleep mode, and then wake it up, it kernel panics. This does not happen if I close the lid. I have to leave it to go into sleep mode on its own. It only panics when I press a key to wake it up, before that I can still ssh into it so it hasn't paniced yet.
I found some other posts with these trap codes, indicating the HD4000 chipset in my MBA. Many indicate a Chrome related issue but I never use Chrome, though it is installed.
The other reports are fairly identical except for the CPU ID which differs in each. I hope I'm just adding my complaint to the stack here because there were a lot of MBA posts relating to this issue, many of them  recent purchases. I'm doing to try a time machine restore just for the **** of it.
Ever since these issues started I also started seeing network problem when trying to use software update. It asks me if I want to diagnose the issue but it only says my connection is working, which it is in general. This also started at the same time as the panics.

This gets rid of the crap that causes the KPs after sleep MBP mid 2012. All the stuff floating around from me playing with different utilities over the years!
    loaded kexts:

    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiDal    9.0.2f4

What exactly gets rid of the KP? All I see in that thread is troubleshooting by listing installed services, kexts and startup items.
I've checked out my own and since my MBA is fairly new, only used as a thin client, I had nowhere near the amount of items displayed in the linked thread.
If it was something I installed then it would most likely be Microsoft Office, Valve Steam or Oracle VirtualBox. I don't know what Adobe fpsaud is, maybe something with flash? Google Keystone is Chrome's auto updated if I'm not mistaken.
I don't think any of this explains the Kernel Panic, and definitely not the inability to use any software updated due to network errors. Even though my network works fine and network diagnostics says it works too.

  • Cost of a MacbookAir Mid 2012 256GB SSD replacement (from Apple)

My Mid 2012 MBA 256GB SSD just failed, 1 week out of warranty if you believe it!. I updated my OS X, restarted and boom, gone. Bad luck I guess.
I'm wondering if anyone has had to replace this part and what the cost was? I am well aware of OWC's solution and I would prefer to avoid them - they seem dodgy and the reviews seem in total pretty negative. I'd like to stick with a legit Apple repair.
I am living in Germany, but the MBA was purchased in Australia if that changes anything.
Also, does Apple provide a warranty on the repair?

In recent days many people with a dead SSD on a 2012 MBAir have had their SSD's replaced by Apple free of charge, even though they were out of warranty.
There is a long and informative thread on failed SSD's in 2012 MBAir here:

This thread here also has some good information:

The more recent posts describe people's experiences in getting out-of-warranty repairs from Apple in numerous countries.

  • 13" Mid 2012 MBP. Internal hdd not seen (again...) but runs fine from USB.

I bought my MBP in December, 2012. It ran wonderfully for the first three months. With no real warning whatsoever, I got the ? Folder at startup. I did my research and tried the troubleshooting I found here and on other sites.
What it boiled down to was that I could run the hdd externally via USB just fine, but it was not detected via the internal SATA connection. I tried swapping the hdd as well, but I didn't have any luck. So, I ran my brand new MBP via USB for about two months until I got back to the U.S. (working in Afghanistan) and took it to the local Apple Store.
They checked it out, swapped the hdd, and told me it was fixed. It seemed like it for about three or four months, but I was still wary. Sure enough, the hdd failed again. This time I couldn't get it to work from the USB though, so I beleived the hdd actually failed this time. I swapped the hdd, hoping that it was that simple (back in Afghanistan, so the store wasn't an option). It ran fine for about two months this time.
Now it is not detected internally again, but runs just fine via USB. I did try a different hdd that I had on hand, and that wasn't detected either. As you can imagine, I am not excited about running a year old MBP via USB. Unfortunately my initial year of coverage ran out last month.
Does anyone have some suggestions on how I should go forward with this? I've heard great things about Apple support, but I won't be back to the U.S. for at least a month. Should I bother talking to the local Apple Store when I get back? Deal directly with a different support avenue? Am I out of luck and stuck financing my own repairs? What is the best course of action here?

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the HDD, then there may be a faulty ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. Try replacing it.
I would also check that your RAM modules are well-seated with clean edge pins.
