My Macintosh HD is full 979GB only 300MB left.

My Macintosh HD is full 979GB with only 300MB left but there is only 100GB of files stored on the Mac, can't find anything that is filling the disc.

Your boot volume is full. First, reboot. That will free up some space. Typically you need at least about 10 GB free for proper operation. More than that to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

How do I copy/paste full numerical-only account strings into the Projects WebADI template when the account segment fields in the template require use of the dropdown because they're formatted as alpha-numeric values? I'm using the Integrator named "Projects - Transaction Import" and a custom Layout created based on the seeded Layout named "Transaction Import - Accounted". Do I need to somehow change my Layout to make the Document accept numerical values instead of requiring alpha-numeric values? I need to be able to populate the Document with a large amount of transactions and cannot feasibly go through every transaction to add the alpha-valued name of the account segment to every segment that requires it. The segments in particular causing the problem are "Expnd Type" and "Organization Name" which are both alpha-numeric and as such contain the segment number and name; I need to be able to only have to enter the Natural Account Number (6-digit number only) and the Organization Number (5-digit number only).

I keep getting the message "macintosh hd disc full" when I try to edit or import video.  How can I make room?

You can go to Applications, Utilities, Activiy Monitor to see just how much space is available.  To free space you need to remove files that take a lot of space, things like videos, photos, music.  Get an external hard drive, OWC http://www.macsales.com has a good selection, and move material off the internal drive.

  • Full Games Only Allowed in GameCenter.

Demo, limited and lite games should not be allowed in the GameCenter... Really what's the point? How are you gonna go head to head with someone playing a demo, limited or lite version of the game.
Why is Apple allowing this? That's just spamming a game imo and should be disallowed from being available to the GameCenter. Only Full games should be allowed entry into the GameCenter.

Up to the developer? Aren't we all tired of the lite, limited and demo games being disguised as full games in the app center? I can hardly make my way through the free section without being tricked into downloading what appears to be a free app. And now you are suggesting that the game center should get over ran by the same nonsense and tactics?
Don't get me wrong, I like free games and demos... What I don't like is games disguised as a free full game and you load it up to find out you have to buy stuff for full version. After all, lite is lite and how do you justify a person playing a full version competing against someone playing a lite version and vice versa? It definitely destroys stats and it makes absolutely no sense at all and I feel it should be disallowed from the game center. If the dev want's his games entered into that arena then provide the full app only with the ability and not the lite version.
By the way, thanks for the link but I used it prior to making my post. As we all know, unless there is a public outcry, Apple won't make any changes.

  • Why is my 8gb ipod touch full with only 227 songs

Why is my 8GB Ipod touch full with only 227 and nothing else. I also share my itunes with my Iphone, There is only audio on my IPod

Did you post this same question recently?
What is the detail format of the music? Music can be compressed to different degrees. The less compression the more storage each song needs.
Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:

  • Error message:  Volume "Macintosh HD is full"  on brand new mini

    Hi,
Just installed Logic X on a brand new Mini 2.6Ghz, 256 ss HD, 16 gigs Ram. This is a dedicated machine for music so there is really no other major programs installed. I have almost 200 gigs of free HD space. I am using 2 interfaces as an agregate device for a total of 20 i/o. One is a MOTU 896MK3 and the other is an Audiofire Echo which is the master clock. The connection is Firewire 400 and I'm recording at 44.1 to the same internal HD. I also optimized my computer settings by turning off indexing and time machine.
On this project I have about 12 tracks of live drums enabled which I can record with no problem but when I try to play the tracks back after about 30 seconds in it stops and I get this error message: Volume "Macintosh HD is full" . The session has no software instruments at this time and I have no plugins on the tracks yet. When I look at my CPU load it's very low as would be expected and I have a ton of HD space. This computer is literally 2 days old. I am monitoring the individual tracks back through the interfaces into the returns on my analog mixer channels. I should also say that I had similar issues trying to run this setup on an older macbook pro which had a lot of software installed on it and is not a robust, I thought that upgrading to a newer faster machine would be the way to go. I am suspecting that my agregate interface setup could be a week link but getting an HD error message doesn't make any sense to me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Please read this thread...
    http://superuser.com/questions/682465/mac-hard-drive-full-message-when-its-not
Its normally caused by a disk data problem ..... and the solution in this thread usually fixes it...
if this doesnt fix it.. try rebuilding your Spotlight indexes.... as Spotlight is what Logic uses to track everything on disk.... so it could be a corrected index that is at the root of your problem.

  • Satellite P750-10C: SSD not so fast - get only 300MB/s

    Hi,
Today I bought Samsun 840 PRO 128GB with 390/500MB and install it in my notebook, but in test I get only 300MB/s, why?
Its SATA III port, so I should get this 500MB like other person.

    Hi
From my knowledge some models of Satellite P750 series would support two HDDs
I think that the HDD1 and HDD2 would be connected to port 0 and 1 and for both HDDs 600MB/s (2x 300MB/s ) data throughput would be reserved.
I think in such case even if the notebook would support one HDD, only 300MB/s would be possible.
SATA port 2 where ODD is connected would support only 300MB/s

Restarting my iPad does not help
Some thing similar also happened to my old laptop when trying to download the iOS 5 update to my laptop when it came out. It kept getting disconnected and every time it would try to start over and act like what had already been downloaded was not there though it was still taking up the storage space.
And it continued repeating until it took up all of my storage space. The data file would not show up anywhere so I had to restore my laptop to the factory settings and that worked for awhile but I eventually had to get a new laptop.

Did you try to set it up as new device, as explained in this article?

If this does not work, use iTunes to set it back to factory settings, which would also install the latest software:

  • The websites are being stretched sideways to twice their normal width so I can see only the left half of a site unless I go into "Fullscreen" mode; ideas?

Whenever I use Firefox the page opens so that I can see only the left half of whatever site; i.e. half of the useful page info (the rest is cut off) displays on the right half of my screen while the left half of my screen shows just background of the site. Using the maximise/restore button does nothing. If I swap to the fullscreen view I can see everything fine but obviously I lose my tool bars. I installed the latest version of Firefox with no joy. I've looked for a page setup function to no avail. I thought that time would fix this as it is something that has happened before but was temporary. Other browsers work fine. I thought about uninstalling then re-installing but I'm not keen to lose my bookmarks etc. unless I have to. Thanks for your help in advance; I hope this ramble makes some sense.

  • I have an iPod Classic 5th Gen.  After 1 month I've lost all my music and playlist files.  The only files left are music I have purchased from iTunes.  How do I restore my music library to my iPod?

I have an iPod Classic 5th Generation.  I have not used it for about one month.  When I turned it on, I had lost all my music and playlist files.  The only thing left on the iPod was the music and audio books I have purchased from iTunes store.  I tried to delete everything on the ipod by sliding the hold button and then pressing the center button and the menu and I saw the apple logo on the screen but the iPod wouldn't reboot.  Any suggestions as to how I can delete everything on the iPod and then plug it into my computer to restore my music library?  I am using a Windows 7 operating system.

Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
if it  does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
    Connect back to the Mac
When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
    Sync your library.
    Good Luck!

Yeah, I remember someone posted that solution a long time
ago. It seems if you load a file with the same name the cache
    doesn't
know any better and adjusts the download size to the smaller
one. Maybe it's a good way to do it! Could it be a way to remove an
