My Macintosh kills my WRT54G

Windows XP and Windows Vista work fine, but when I connect with a Macbook it works for a while and then the router freezes.  Turning the router off and on fixes it for another half hour or so, and then it happens again.
I have googled and tried various suggestions: disable SES in the router; disable IPv6 on the Mac; force the router to use wireless g; assign the Mac a fixed IP address.  So far nothing has worked.
We also talked to our local Apple reseller.  They suggested downgrading the card in the Mac from n to g and wanted $200 to do that for us.  Surely there's an easier and less costly fix!
Can anyone help?  The Mac is running OS X 10.4.

Thank you for the help.  I have not tried your suggestions because after I posted my first message I noticed that the frequency with which the Mac was killing the router had greatly decreased, I believe because of switching to a manual IP address.  I think what had been killing the router was the periodic negotiation of a new IP lease.
In the meantime I have updated to the latest version of OSX 10.4, including several updates to the wireless system, and together that seems to have fixed the problem.

  • Networking PC & Macintosh with Linksys WRT54G

I've spent the last 2 days looking at Macintosh, Windows and Linksys forums all over the Internet and no one seems to have this exact problem. So, I figured it was time I posted. Here is the deal.
I have a Macintosh G4 running OS 10.3.9 and a PC running Windows 2000. The Windows machine is hard-wired into a Linksys WRT54G router (v6 1.00.9 firmware). The Macintosh is using a wireless card (MacWireless 11g PCI Card).
Both systems can get onto the Internet just fine. I just can't get the Mac and the PC to share files. I have set up a shared folder on the PC. I turned on file sharing on the Macintosh. I even turned off both firewalls on each computer and all encryption and security on the router. (Yes, I know I should have security on. Once I get it to work, I'll go back and begin to lock things down.)
If I go to the Windows command prompt, I can successfully ping the Macintosh IP address (192.168.1.101).
If I use the Network Utility on the Macintosh, I can successfully ping the IP address of the Windows machine (192.168.1.100).
So, the machines definitely SEE each other. They just won't connect to file sharing with each other.
If I use the "Add Network Place Wizard" on the PC to add the Macintosh to the PC, I get the error: "The network location cannot be reached."
When I use the "Connect to Server" on the Macintosh to add the Windows machine, I get the error: "The username or password are not correct." It never gives me a dialog requesting a username or password though!
This is driving me batty. I have the feeling I'm VERY close to getting it working and I'm just missing some small configuration detail. Something is tripping things up and I have no idea what else to attempt.
    Any thoughts?

  • WRT54GS v6 1.52 firmware kills internet

I upgraded to firmware v1.52 for my WRT54GS wireless router. Now, I cannot connect to the Internet. The router network status shows 0.0.0.0 for IP address from my cable modem. Tested with a different router and everything works fine. So I assume it is the firmware upgrade.
Please advise on location for a firmware downgrade.

Since you are using cable modem you have to clone pc's mac and disabled block WAN request. I hope I am helping.
No you dont...  Please explain why you have to clone if you use a cable modem?  I have used a cable modem for 5 years and not one time have I had to clone the PC's MAC.  Not even when I bought new computers.  Just reset the modem to clear the memory.

  • WRT54G v6 Access Restrictions killing router connection

I've posted this question elsewhere, but an answer never came up, so I'm hoping to find a solution here
I have a number of sites I'm looking to block on my home network.  I set four access restriction policies (since you're limited on how many each policy can block), and it worked just fine.  The sites were blocked and everything went well for about an hour (give or take, I can't recall).  Then, my internet connection became erratic and started continually dropping.
The problem was that it wasn't my actual internet connection, but the router doing what appeared to be like a power-off refresh - the Power light would start blinking rapidly, and then it would either eventually reconnect on its own, or I'd have to reset the router.  No matter what, though, after enabling the access restrictions, I couldn't maintain a stable connection for very long. I know that these restrictions are the issue, because if I turned them off, it was fine.. and if I turn them back on, it acts up again. I downloaded the latest firmware, but that did not help.
The router didn't feel exceptionally hot (as I thought that might've been it), but the system allows for 10 policies to be enabled, so I don't think 4 should kill the whole system. I didn't see any type of other options in the access restriction policy panel that might be causing some type of internet connection interference, but I could be wrong. I'd really love to have these blocks in place, but I'd also love to be able to still access the internet at the same time
Any help or passed-on knowledge of what's going on would be extremely appreciated

It seems defective. But you can try reflashing the firmware and then holding the reset button for 30seconds after that. If that doesn't work then do a 30-30-30 reset. You might just have to use Open Dns if those suggestions don't fix the issue.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • WRT54G V8, Cannot change my password. Macintosh, Trying to hook-up Apple TV. , I'M DESPERATE!!!!!

I have a Macintosh G5. I bought an "Apple TV" that connects wirelessly to my router.  In set-up it shows the Linksys and asks for  WEP PASSWORD. In my computer I typed 192.168.1.1 and then went to the ADMIN tab and tried to change my password.  After I change it and click SAVE I get another window that says Admin at  top and asks for my password at the bottom.  I type in the new password which reloads the Administration window again except my password is not changed. Because I have a Mac I don't know what the original password was. It is not ADMIN because it is about 18 characters long.  PLEASE HELP ME I'M NEW TO THIS STUFF!!!!!
    Thanks,  Bill

The password on the Adminstration tab is the password for the web interface of the router. That password protects the router from unauthorized reconfiguration. It has nothing to do with wireless connections.
Go on the Wireless tab, then click Wireless Security. There you can see your wireless security keys. Enter the hexadecimal number in key 1 on your Apple TV. That should work.
Of course, WEP is highly insecure. It is easily and quickly cracked. I would highly recommend to switch your router to WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK security. Enter a good strong passphrase. The other advantage of WPA is that you cannot confuse the keys with the passphrase. In WPA2 there is only the passphrase...

  • WRT54G won't recognize my password on a Macintosh Laptop

    Hi there,
Im on a G4 Macintosh Laptop and have successfully connected my two wired computers to the router and have internet access....However I cannot seem to connect to the router on my wireless laptop. I have tried both WEP and WPA security setting and it won't recognize the password. The password I am using is a 10 digit numberic password. I either get the message that the network doesn't recognize my password (in WEP mode) or there was a error joining the network (WPA mode). Can anyone help me?

Use WPA. It is secure. Make sure you choose WPA on the Mac when you enter the passphrase. You should not use a numeric passphrase or a passphrase which only consists of numbers and letter a-f. Although, if correctly implemented, it does not matter, some routers/devices may have issues distinguishing numbers representing the passphrase with numbers representing the key. If you get an error, please post the exact error message. Does your Mac support WPA?
WEP can be cracked within minutes. For WEP you cannot use the "passphrase" or "password" you enter on the Wireless Security tab of the router. That is only used to generate the actual four WEP keys. Make sure your router is configure for transfer key 1. Then enter the first WEP key on the Mac. The WEP key consists of 10 or 26 hexadecimals. On a Mac you have to enter a $ sign in front of the hexadecimals to indicate that those numbers are a hexadecimal key.

  • MBP Kills my Linksys WRT54G v5

I recieved my MBP last Wednesday, everything was well until Sunday when Firefox wouldn't load any pages, my Vonage line went dead, and I couldn't access any of the other computers on my network.
All computers on my network still reported being connected to the network (all wireless), but communications are not being responded to.
The only way to restore the network is to powercycle or reset the router.
This happens repeatedly within 10 minutes or 3 hours of my MBP starting or connecting to the network.
This does not occur with my MBP off & any of the 4 Windows machines in my household running.
When this first occurred, I was running 10.4.7 after installing all updates (including FW). I did a full install (erasing the Hard Drive), but the issue still presents itself.
I have updated the routers firmware to no avail.
Has anybody here have any thoughts on how to remedy this issue without a trip to an Apple store or calling AppleCare?
P.S. I am using 64 bit WEP security, I cannot use any thing else because of other hardware which requires access wirelessly to the internet.

    Do this:
    - Go to System Preferences
    - Click Network
    - Highlight AirPort and click Configure
    - Choose "By default, join: Preferred networks"
    - Select your access point and click edit
    - Click on "show password"
At this point you should see a crazy corrupt password.. Proof that it is jacked up. Now:
    - Exit that window back to the access point list
    - Remove your access point with the "-" button
    - Launch your keychain and delete your access point keychain entry.
    - Reboot
    - Go back to the "By default, join:" page and click the "+" this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.
If this does not work, statically assign an IP and DO NOT USE DHCP

  • WRT54GS V6.0 No setup Tabs???

I recently upgraded my wireless B router to a wireless G w/ speedbooster and I am having a big problem logging on to it.  For some reason, whenever I log onto it using 192.168.1.1 blank login password admin I get the normal background that I used to get with my old router, but now I have no tabs to click on???  I should have tabs across the top to alter my settings (setup, security,...) I have nothing except for the(&) symbol and that is it.  I talked to linksys "foreign" support for an hour yesturday and they have no clue, so i exchanged it for another thinking it was the router, but the new one is doing the same thing.  I know my firmware is old but i have no way of updating it?  Why would they sell me a router with old firmware anyway (twice)?   Can anyone help????

Just figured out how to fix this on my own WRT54GS.  COMPLETELY disable, turn off, kill Zone Alarm.  All the tabs showed up and I was able to update firmware that I had been screwing around with for hours.

  • I killed a MacBook Pro. Shutdown with flash in drive and now it won't start at all.

I may have killed my MacBook Pro OS X by accidentally restarting  with  a Flash Drive it it and now it won't start at all.  Any ideas?

So it is powering on. You did not state that before. In that case:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Also see this if above doesn't work:
    Install OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the original version of OS X that came on the machine.

  • Need help finding a good monitor for a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0)

    Hi
I've owned Macs since the 90's - the past 7 years have been using Imacs...  I'm going to purchase a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0) with the Nvidia 6600LE card.  Whats a decent monitor for it?  It's DVI output only as far as I can tell - I want at least a 22 or 24 inch monitor and want a fairly inexpensive one as I'm a poor man (Social Security disability).  Can anyone suggest one - I can't tell what screen resolutions are optimal for the card (googled till my eyes hurt) if I knew that I could start hunting CompUSA, Sams Club, etc.

Check out newegg.com. I just got the same G5 you have this past summer and a couple months ago finally decided it was time to ditch the old 21" CRT Viewsonic Ive been using for years.
I picked up a 21" Acer widescreen HD LCD on sale for $119.00 from newegg and could not have been happier..
Ive never bought anything from Acer before but its so far got no complaints from me other then, the DVI cable they give you is the wrong type to use with your G5's video card. Lucky for me it had a DVI-VGA adapter so I could get running. Its running just fine at 1900x1200 without any dual link DVI connecter.
One thing I like about newegg is you get to read user reviews and they are not afraid to tell you if something is bad. Theyve always got different models and brands rotating on and off sale so check em out and make sure you check the reviews and you can find a killer deal.
I think the Viewsonics I looked at in the same size were around $199 or so.. I wouldve got one but Im a broke and jobless kinda guy nowadays so had to get one as cheap as I could..

  • Macintosh HD does not show up in Windows 7 bootcamp

I recently decided to transfer some things over to my hardrive, which is NTFS and needs to be used with Windows. This hasn't been a problem before now as i would just restart into Windows 7, plug in the harddrive, access the Macintosh HD from Windows, and transfer whatever it is i need to. This was not possible when i tried this today. When i went to look for he Macintosh HD it is not showing up at all in Windows 7. Im not sure what happened between the last time i tried this and now. The only thing that i can think of is possibly one of the new updates from Lion may have done this. Anyways hopefully someone has had the same issue and might be able to provide some insight. Thanks so much everyone!

Thanks! But I actually figured it out! Right after I said something about the driver, I went into device mangager. Sure enough even though it did not show up as a drive letter the device manager said is was installed and working.
So I deleted the device out of device manager. Restarted and plugged it in. Although I go some weird error. It found the IPOD and now Itunes sees it.
I believe that killing the process would have done the same thing as you stated.
Thanks to all for taking the time to answer these issues. It beats the apple store or tech support.

  • MacBook killing wireless network

I have the MacBook 1.1 . Router is Linksys WRT54G. Up until approximately 2 weeks ago the network has worked without issue. For some reason the MacBook is killing the wireless network. I thought it was my ISP at first but then narrowed it down to the issue only happening when the MacBook is on the wireless network and then in the past couple of days noticed the network gets killed as soon as the Macbook connects. Im not referring to the just the MacBook loosing connection.... the entire wireless goes down and no wireless devices have access. It eventually comes back up but as long as the MacBook remains in the wireless network it will go back down again.
Snow Leopard... Latest driver... latest firmware. It seems that this started right after a recent update downloaded on the MacBook but I cannot recall what was updated. I need this fixed since my Macbook is my main computer. The others are for family members and Im forced to stay off so they dont get booted.

I have a similar problem with the Linksys WRT54G2 router. The problem seems to come and go but like you rz22g the only time the network is affected is when my MacBook is connected. All other devices on my network work fine PS3, MacMini etc.
Just a speculation but the frequency of this problem started when I upgraded the firmware of the router. I don't know why this would have such a negative reaction. I have also checked that all the router settings are identical to the way they were before the router firmware update.
Oddly enough while I type this my network has been the most stable I've seen it in a while.

  • Multiple wireless routers with Macintosh OSX - Does not work

I work for Spokane Public Library system as an IT Specialist. At all of our branches, we use multiple WRT54G wireless devices to serve our patrons. We are having notable trouble with Macintosh clients who can get connected to the wireless network but cannot obtain a DHCP address and thus cannot surf the web. We have the WRT54G devices configured with unique SSID's and no wireless protection; basically an open network.
Will having both of the WRT54G's set to the same channel pose a problem? Do Macs on OSX have an issue with the Linksys implementation of DHCP that you know of?
We have verified this problem at all branches; including the use of my laptop which is a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.4.10.
There are other posts on this forum with similar issues and no responses.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

YES! My own resolution... It turns out that it WAS A LINKSYS COMPATIBILITY ISSUE. Updating the WRT54G firmware to version 1.02.2 made it all work great. There was a fix for DHCP in the 1.02.2 version.
This is for both version 5 and 6 of the WRT54G.
    Woot!

  • WRT54G v5 forgets static IP address

My WRT54G v5 forgets it's assigned static IP address.
While accessing the router's settings via a web browser, while in "Status," "Login Type" correctly lists "Static," but the number appears as all zeros.
Clicking back to "Setup" (where all numbers appear just fine) and then clicking "Refresh" makes the IP address reappear in the "Status" window.
Any idea why the address in "Status" gets reset to zero?
FWIW, we own five IP addresses. Address #1 is the main IP address we use for our DSL router. The IP address in the status window is one of the secondary addresses.
I'm using Firmware v1.00.1. We're an all-Macintosh, and so I need to know if any firmware updates adversely affect Macs (I seem to recall seeing something about that somewhere in this site).
We don't connect wirelessly all that often, so I don't know exactly when the reset occurs (the wireless feature is primarily for guests to our office).
    Thanks for any thoughts.
    M.

Yes, there's the latest firmware update for your router and the version number for the new version is 1.01.1... upgrading to that firmware could fix your problem

  • Latest Apple TV Kills entire network connection

I was super excited to purchase my first Apple TV, until I hooked it up. I have found if I use it wirelessly, it will kill my entire network within a short amount of time. 10-15mins. After that time, no computer can access anything on the internet, and the Apple TV will not find the library again after I finish watching whatever was playing. But, everything runs smoothly until that point. It finds the library, internet access through ATV is fine, remote app on my iPhone works fine, it's beautiful! …for a short time.
Through troubleshooting that issue, I found if I connect via ethernet, it will not find my iTunes library at all, but it will connect to the internet just fine. ????
I've found a few random things on the web related to this, but they are all in reference to old ATV models, and I cannot seem to come across any posts mentioning my exact problem. So far, I've tried doing the following on both wired and wireless connections:
-made sure my Linksys router has the latest firmware version available
-tried increasing the client lease times on the router to roughly 1 week.
-tried manually configuring the ATV IP to maintain a static address, but it still kills the entire network when running wireless, and will not find the library when wired in.
I've never had problems with my network before; it's been running smoothly for 5 years. I've also been streaming Netflix to my LG Tv for about a year now with no issues. I am totally happy to invest $99 in an ATV-love the concept, love the convenience. But if Apple has something going on where it will only work with an airport extreme, I am not happy with investing $278 in an apple tv when my current wireless setup works just fine. Does anyone have any ideas on what I may be doing wrong or how this can be resolved? I really do love the idea of having access to my media wirelessly, and would hate to have to return the ATV.
    Tech details:
Latest little ATV model, library hosted on a mid 2011 MBPro Core i7 running OS 10.6.8 with latest iTunes version. My library has about 65gigs of music and about the same in movies. We have that MacBook and 1 PC runing on the network. I am using this Linksys router: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/wrt54G
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Very similar situation here. My ATV3 is connected via WiFi, but it loses its network connection if the following two conditions are met: it sleeps, and my Aiport base station is turned off any time afer the ATV sleeps. When I power up the Airport again, the ATV does not find my network without either restarting or selecting the network manually from a list of nearby networks.
In other words, sleep is OK only if the network is never powered off.
