Desktop: Mac Mini dual-core i5 (or quad i7 if you can afford it, it might seem overpowered but it will last you longer. Upgrade to 16GB RAM if you want to future proof that side of the machine. Don't buy from Apple, install it yourself).
Laptop: MacBook Pro 13' if you don't need portability, or MacBook Air 11' if you do (as RRFS has said).
A notebook and a laptop are the same thing.

When I use my IPhone 4S to view the Shaw Go Movie Central App when I am at home I only use WiFi which is automatic, I start watching a show and sometimes I will get a message like "you can not use your cellular for video playback" or something close to that. Then I received an email from Telus saying I had used my 3G instead of Wi-Fi  using 75% of my data. How can this happen when I'm on Wi-Fi at home? If it switched to 3G for some reason I should have been disconnected and not just transferred to 3G network using up my data. What is the fix for this??

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.
    Ciao.

  • Brand New iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Intel 2 Core Extreme 500 GB Hard Drive Issues

Had a 2 week old iMac 20" 2.4 GHz 320 GB hard drive that I purchased from the Apple Store online on 12/09/07. Got delivered to me on 12/13/07. After 7 calls (on 7 different days) to Apple Care Support, my iMac could not get onto the internet network in my apartment.
Had Apple swap my unit and I got the top of the line model out there now, the iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Intel 2 Core Duo Extreme with 500 GB hard drive. Still, can't connect to the internet.
I've got Time Warner Cable as my internet service provider (High Speed Internet Access). I'm using a brand new Airport Extreme as my base station in the living room, and a brand new (all exchanged through AppleCare) Airport Express which I'm using to extend the network as a bridge.
My new iMac is in the study den in my apartment, and my MacBook Pro gets signal from anywhere in the apartment, but when I use the iMac, and click on my secure network using the WPA2 passcode that I set up, the iMac tries to connect, and says "Connection Time Out" and then "Connection Fail."
I've read posts throughout these forums saying that there are issues with the new aluminum iMacs that came out.
I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on both machines right now, and even with the swap from the 20" to the 24", I still have the same problems.
Gonna have to make another angry call to AppleCare Support tonight to see if I can get this thing resolved.
Anyone else have any other suggestions to getting this fixed for my iMac?
What about using a different router besides the Apple Extreme or Airport Express? Any ideas?
    Thanks

ok try this with your MAC BOOK PRO
Go to your system preferences go to the apple icon and then hit system preferences. From section where it says Internet & Network, there you should see an icon folder that says Sharing, In tiger its like that I don´t know how it is in Leopard, but if it is the same we are in luck. Ok Go to sharing and in sharing go to airport option in airport option make a 128 bit wep key and make a sick *** long password hit ok. Now go check the box that says Airport and then hit the start button to start using your MAC BOOK PRO as a router. Now go to your sick *** I wish I had your 24 inch Imac and here I am stuck with my old Imac early intel, and hit the airport extreme icon oh by the way you should also enable your MAC BOOK PRO airport extreme which now it is a WIFI Router trasmitter I Hope I was of any help

  • Only use a computer for email, internet, basic computing. Is the ipad a better option than a macbook?

Used to have a macbook, bought it back in '07, had to sell it shortly thereafter.
Don't have a computer now and need one.
Looking over the macbook pro, I am wondering if it is too much computer for me.
I use a computer for emails, surfing the web and twitter.
I'm wondering if the ipad would be a better fit, or if I should be looking for a computer.
    Thanks.

MacBook air just perfect i have an iPad 2 ( I know it's an old one but it is almost same ) i mostly need pc for stuff and normally I like to download movies for that I need a good memory which you won't get on an iPad best choice for you is a 11 or 13 inch MacBook air iPad is bettween comp and a phone it is good but not enought ( altleast for me ) if you take an iPad u won't the benefits of downloading zip files and many other files but with a MacBook you can do it as it supports all iPad is good for presenting stuff good for reading books , web pages are good too ( flash is not there so some sites are not good ) editing word docs or slidshows are nice and easy but not fully usefull ( simple editing options) if you convert the files say into doc it gets messy on a comp to see , plus doc files with lots of stuff like photos and tables gets messed up but if we convert to PDF then you get a nice experience , MacBook has many options in pages , numbers , keynote , you will like an iPad even I like it but like u even I am looking for a MacBook right now as I need to back up files and download movies anyways it decides unto u so go to the apple shop he will help u choice the right choice a person here will only tell good stuff and suggest what he likes but if you go to the apple store he will give you the perfect choice for u

You need a "Core 2 Duo" for lion, and I'm guessing you only have a "Core Duo"  My wife's macbook is also a "Core Duo" and has Snow Leapord, but cannot install Lion.....

  • I am planning to buy mac mini 2.5Gzh. I will be using it mainly for video editing and I am planning to upgrade up to 8GB. Is it a good buy or should I try some other alternative.

I am planning to buy my next desktop. I will be using this mainly for video editing. I am not a professional video editor, I normally do home made videos for youtube, like tutorial, DIY project etc. I use Nikon D3100 camera and some basic green screen techniques as part of recording. So my basic video editing would be just syncing audio, editing videos to cut un-necessary frames etc and some basic effects. I am also planning to buy final cut pro.
So my question is should I buy the mac mini or Imac?

    Great advice from RRFS!
For video editing, do go for 16 GB of RAM ffrom OWC & consider the twice as fast i7 2.6 model, see Geekbench scores here..

Thanks a lot for your help,

Apple HED has no published email addresses, and since Apple does not sell their products directly in Israel, you will probably need to work through local distributors or dealers in any case. I would suggest contacting Apple's authorized distributor, iConGroup:

Hello, I have two questions on time capsule  I can only have it on my external hd files and free up my internal memory to my mac  I can use an external hard drive, in my case a lacie rugged as shared memory for my two computers

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.
and how to use time capsule airport whit other external hd to use my old lacie airport with the new time capsule
Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.
Again everything is explained in the reference.. you are not reading it.

A Core Solo or Core Duo Mac can go to Mac OS X 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better can go to Mac OS X 10.7.2.

My Apple desktop computer, 2.4 GHz Intel duo core, OS 10.6.8, stopped recognizing the WD My Book connected via firewire. It works fine with the USB port so it's not the drive. Help please?

It can be the bridge. It could need firmware update. or the FW ports may be an issue. LaCie seemed to invent the phrase/tip 'resetting firewire ports' due to the issues with their drive cases.
You can try an SMC Reset.
So far I have avoided name-brand and tend to see them mentioned. Often with a new OS (though you are on 10.6.8, but when 10.6 came out there was a common complaint and thread of users: FW or USB worked but not the other interface).

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • Should my next purchase be a MacBook Pro

Hello all. First let me say that this is a sincere post.
I am a Solution Architect. In my current capacity I not only design solutions for my company, I create prototypes of my designs and depending on resource constraints may become heads down coder guy. My company has various technological platforms ranging from Java and .Net to the mainframe.
I am looking into purchasing a new notebook computer that I will use at work and at home and would like to weigh the alternatives of purchasing a windows, linux, or O/S X based machine. I have never owned an Apple computer before, but I am willing to try something new.
I am sure that there are individuals out there in a similar situation who have made the leap from windows-based to O/S X.
    1. What are the differences that you have experienced?
    2. Are you just as productive on the Mac?
    3. What are pros and cons?
    4. Would you do it again?
Thank you in advance for any input.

    1. What are the differences that you have experienced?
There are a lot of little things that emerges as you make the switch. I have always used PC's and after a lot of years I decided to buy a MBP. The main differences I have found is that the apple computer is much snappier than my windows one and the most obvious one is about the software differences. You can have a substitute of almost any application you find in windows, but the transition is not easy and you have to look through a lot of forums.
    2. Are you just as productive on the Mac?
I'm a day trader as well as a planning manager, the software I make my trades with requires Windows, so I can't really talk about productivity in there. My full-time job is around a Windows ambient in a small company, most of the software we use is custom made for Windows and can only be used under Windows, but all the other tasks I make (writing reports, flow cash analysis, project evaluation, etc...) I make them on the OSX as well as all my personal stuff (movies, pictures, blog) and must tell you that I feel much more productive with the Mac than with the PC box. The Mac OS is a much more thoughtful OS, you need less clicks in order to make the same thing than in a PC, the aspect is much nicer and the overall feeling is better. I would definitely say that if it wasn't for the software barrier the only OS I would like to use is the Mac one.
    3. What are pros and cons?
I will mainly focus on the cons because there are so many pros that you can easily search anywhere. For me the main cons are the little things that make it different, for example, in the MBP there is no Del key, you have to use the fn+Backspace keys to emulate the Delete one (which I use a lot) at first I didn't adapt myself to no right-click, so I still use a lot the two fingers on touchpad and click in order to emulate the right click (also bought a mighty mouse, which also has it's downsides) the keyboard gets finger stains very easily, my brother had a Powerbook (Which I believe is almost the same design) and the keyboard got printed in the screen, making it impossible to clean afterwards, I still use the keyboard cloth it came with and also clean my MBP every week in order to keep it nice and beautiful. It gets REALLY hot, sometimes you really can't use it on your lap. It doesn't have a HDMI output in order to connect it to my receiver. The charger gets dirty very easy as well, and finally I must say that the wireless connectivity can give you some trouble once in a while.
I repeat myself, there are TONS of pros when buying the MBP, it's just that I wanted to focus on the cons because sometimes you don't find them as easy as the pros.
    4. Would you do it again?
Certainly yes, not only it's gorgeous, but it makes the job very well and has an incredible community of users who are very willingly to help. Using VMware Fusion really eliminates all the trouble with the software.
    Hope this helps
