At the moment my MacPro is locked down because of a P/word problem but i need my serial number for support help. My Windows partition on Bootcamp is working so can I get my serial number from this side?

The serial number should be printed underneath your computer on its chassis. Generally this is right between the hinges of the display, and should be accompanies by a bunch of regulations symbols and Apple's "Designed by Apple in California" text.

  • MacPro hard drives locked up. How do I unlock them?

    MacPro2 x 2.93 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon
    64 GB  1333 MHz DDR3
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Just created additional user account. Logged out and logged back into my user account. Noticed 3 of my hard drives were locked. Went to Administrator account and they were locked also. It would not let me unlock them, Tech guy even came in and created another Root User account and it would not let him unlock them either. We have reformatted one of the drives, but these are each 2 TB drives and will take me hours to copy my files back from my Time Machine back ups

How were you trying to unlock them? Are they locked or do they just have the wrong permissions?

  • Is it possible to lock folders on macpro

Is it possible to lock a folder on a Macbook Pro? I have financial documents that I want to be hidden so kids can't access them and change or delete them.  I am new to Mac. Thanks

Use an encrypted disk image or give them a separate Mac OS X user account.

  • MacPro locked up at Document/Finder

    Forced to post with iPad-
The MacPro - Bluetooth Trackpad and keyboard function - but have no control to type on text document - or option to save or close.
No other applications can be selected - the entity of mouse is on the screen - but not allowed to touch anything.
Pressing random key makes the screen flash -
This happened about a year ago - but all those tips saved to file are not accessible at the moment.
I suspect something simple- but all I can get to come up pressing keys - is Front Row doing command / escape - then escape to close it.
I'd simple force it down - but I really want to be able to save all the work on simple document first.
If nothing else- it might be auto saved if forced to shut down.
    Thanks

Figured this stumped the forum -
lucky - cinema display has option to restart with prompt to fly up-
Hitting Enter was only option - it restarted - all is fine.
But I'd be glad to know what glitch this is where mouse simply is not usable.
I removed batteries from TrackPad - made no difference.
The keyboard could scroll with arrow kets - select filess in open finder - quick look with Space Key -
    But thats it.
Mouse can go anywhere- but is not recognized.

  • How to remove Administrator(not me) and file being locked even thought my MacPro is one week old?

Hi guys, Recently I just bought MacBook Pro Retina 13". After that I found out I got Remote DIsc Which I can never look or see thru or even delete it. There is more, with world Icon called Network but i can;t so anything. At the same time, when I checked owner or permission of my own Local Hard drive or folder, it was locked and I can't even allow to untick it. Even worse, in "get info" permission for Read or Write is occupied by "Administrator (Clearly not me since i can't change anything at all), Wheel, System" and every time I set password and trying to changed the onwership, the cursor frozen, Finder frozen, everything frozen. I can't even force quit them so I have no choice to pressed power button to restart and when log in, the loading bar will stuck in the middle or somewhere and it won't move (I fell asleep till afternoon and still the same) until I reinstall the OsX Yoesmite. The installation took me sometimes over 100 hours. That processes were happening again and again like a life cycle. So I can't even restart or shutdown my laptop ever otherwise it will stuck during boosting. I tried everything SMC, Safe mode, Restart DIsck, Reovery, Disk Utilities it doesn't work. Every time i checked my Activity Monitor, weird things like itunehelper, MirgrationAssistant, KernelAissistantManager, ScriptAssistant, and other apps that I did not run. It even sometime stop me from using my own wifi from broadband. Can anyone hlep me please. I am losing my mind . . .Please

  • Lock-ups on 7day old MBP

Ive been having issues since day 1 with my 2.4ghz C2D 17"MBP with highres screen...
Ive used fan-control software to put my fans up to there max speed with the lowest temp thresholds, but, im still having problems.
Under Windows XP (bootcamp) when I play Eve:Online for more than 10mins it will lock the laptop up solid, forcing me to hold down the power button to the the machine to shut down.
Having googled, it appears to be a heat related problem and I could buy something like a Coolermaster NotePalW1 to help keep it cool. Anyone got any other suggestions of things i can try to see if its a hardware or software problem?
    Thanks, Darryn.

  • Itunes disc locked

I've had a MacPro for just over two weeks now and in the last week I've got the "disc locked" error message three times now with iTunes. Also when I shut iTunes down the "saving library" box is there for 10 minutes+ and then I'm advised to force quit - which causes the disc lock message.
Very frustrating experience as, other issues aside, this wasn't a problem I had with iTunes on my PC. My Mac's still in warranty - should I unintall iTunes and reintall it and start the whole library again (I've lost the library once when trying the fix of dragging it to the desktop and copying it back) or should I just take the Mac back to the Apple store and ask them to fix it given hopw long I've had it...

  • MacPro keeps killing hard drives!

    Hi all,
I had a search on here beforehand to see if anyone else has had this issue. I couldn't find a close match, but my apologies if I missed one.
I have an early model Mac Pro (v1.1) and last week the original hard drive (a good 6 years old) suddenly died. It was without any warning as previously the computer had been working fine. The only problem I noticed was immediately before the drive died, Firefox locked up my Mac to the point where I had to do a hard reset. When I turned the Mac back on, it would hang at the Blue screen with a spinning beachball.
I booted from the Snow Leopard install disk and did a HDD repair, where I learnt the drive was dead.
Promptly I bought a brand spanking new WD 1TB HDD, and reinstalled everything. I then tried to use a data recovery app (Disk Driller) to copy what it could off the old HDD, which was running off one of the internal SATA conenctions. This seemed to cause problems again, locking up the computer and so forth, to the point where again I had to reinstall Snow Leopard.
Now, I have the original dead 250gb HDD in an external case, attempting a restore by backing it up as a DMG to the new HDD. AGAIN, this froze over night while it was doing it's thing. Ordinarily I'd give up, but there was 30gb of photos on this drive as well as old work I wanted to keep.
SO: Now it appears my new HDD is dead.
I don't know that I've explained this very well, but here's my question. Is it possible there is something in my MacPro (software -- I'm looking at you Disk Driller!) or otherwise that is killing my HDDs?
The first HDD was getting on, so I can see how that could have died (although, it was suspiciously sudden). However, my new HDD is now only FOUR DAYS OLD and when I run Disk Utility from my install disk, it warns that the HDD has failed and to back up what I can.
Appreciate any help I can get!
    Dave

AHT does not necessarily mean that a test with no error reported is a clean bill of health.
If you have a system drive that is corrupted directory it WILL or can block booting - from any device, even from DVDs.
External is fine, turn it on after boot. Turn it on after Disk Warrior is running.
And my lecture point: always have bootable backup clones and even if it was owrking it was old slow and out of warranty and your new WD Black 1TB is much faster. But then buy a data drive, one for backup too.
You should never need to reinstall an OS other than when a new OS to start clean (and use Setup Assist to import your old apps).
So play with just the new drive and leave the other to rest.
Do NOT copy data or recvover to your good drive.
Need a recovery drive for that.
you don't need to use a sparse disk image.
Most people try Data Rescue 3 demo to see if it will read and chance to recovery before buying $99.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to make copies of your drives and be able to boot from.

  • Data security in MacPro

    Hi,
I would like to secure my data in MacPro.
How to do this, since there are no MacPro lock available in central Europe?
I need to lock the mashine or secure the data in additional hard-drives (I will be working in shared office).
    Thanks in advance!

haha it was sooo easy, thanks Malcolm!
My computer is under a desk, close to a wall, I didn't see it...
    Thanks again!

  • MacPro won't boot from (2) internal drives but will from DVD

My MacPro hung this morning, blank screen but mouse red LED working. I restarted it and it booted into my 2nd internal drive with 10.5.2 rather than "Macintosh HD". Checked Time Machine and seemed to be all good.
I used the DVD to get TimeMachine to do a complete restore from internal drive 4 onto the main Macintosh HD. This got as far as saying something like "restore complete, click to restart using restored disk".
After clicking I just got a beachball of death.
Used DVD to run disk utility, clean bill of health on all drives except verify permissions gets 15% through then stops.
Now, when I try and boot from either of my two startup disks the MacPro starts up, goes to greyscreen then I get a couple of little clicking noises and the whole thing shuts down.
Tried unplugging everything then just put power lead back in and monitor connection,
Tried running Apple Hardware Test (as it boots from disk but not drives, thought it might be a power supply problem) but AHT gets to "test 1" then locks up
I can boot into single user mode, am about to try FSCK but running out of things to try.
Can I access files from the desktop and put hem onto a remote machine or USB stick from Single User Mode - or access/mount my drives from the DVD. In the "old" days it was poosible to boot to a desktop from a CD - can that still be done?
    Cheers

I always keep spare drives, and use SuperDuper to keep images even of drive volumes.
Keeping one drive to OS only and no data or prefs helps.
Having an emergency drive or partition: a must (sort of like Micromat TTPro eDrive only better).
Pull the drive for now. Maybe Data Rescue II later. And a FW case you can throw it into for repairs or to recover files.
I am surprised you don't get the "stop" sign, a circle + slash, that often indicates corrupt journal/directory and no boot device where it expects to find one.
TechTool Pro, commercial $90 5.0 is due soon, hopefully they were just waiting now for 10.5.5 to be out and see if it would change or alter (or break) their utility.
Backups, whether TS or a clone made with SuperDuper, are critical, should run on their own automatically in background, and the OS doesn't have to be that large, fit it on 60-100GB disk image so you don't have to worry about partition and size.
For now, use the DVD to install OS X on a new drive partition to begin to build a foundation from which you can do more and mark this as emergency-only. You can clone it later if needed to a "working" system. SuperDuper is free for full copy, or use Disk Utility Restore even to set the source and 'target' destination volumes.

  • Help! Early 2008 MacPro keeps crashing suddenly. EtreCheck help needed.

My MacPro 2008 keeps crashing, rebooting, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. This has happened before a couple of years ago, I think I reset PRAM then and it worked.  This time, it hasn't.  The things that have changed since my original configuration: I am now using Chrome as my primary browser, an old but huge Cinema Display and both a Magic Mouse and Wireless keyboard.  Otherwise, not much has changed so I'm not sure what's going on.
I know it's an old system but I'm just trying to squeeze just a little more life out of it.  It has been a solid machine for me for a long time and I need it for some upcoming jobs.
I ran an EtreCheckbut don't know how to interpret/take action from the results.  Please advise!  Thanks in advance.

Sorry it's taken awhile to respond.  In short, I cleaned all the malware, plists and reinstalled my Adobe CS (the cache was acting strange consistently suddenly) but it did not solve my problems permanently.  I was able to to finish my jobs by never putting the computer to sleep for a few days and getting the system stable enough.  But if I put it to sleep, or shut it down to restart it would just shut down randomly and just keep trying to restart, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.  A few times the fans came on violently, to which I would do a hard shut down by pressing the power button down. I did a CMS reset, and pram reset, pulled the power cord out for a battery reset...tried because other forums say it might be bad Ram or a logic board battery going bad.
It seems to be working for now, but I still dont' feel like it's solved.  Here is the first page of the last kernel panic log (I haven't touched my computer for a few days):

  • Firewire port on Macpro won't work with my Sony DV Cam

I just got my Macpro and love it-but I do have a small problem that maybe somebody can help with.
I have a Sony PD100A. I was using this camera on my PC just up until last week and grabbing video via firewire into Premier. It all worked fine.
On my Mac, I plug into a firewire port, and neither iMovie or FCpro can capture from the camera. I seems to recognize the camera, but when you try to capure video, it just locks up.
I also have a firewire hard drive that I'm using to tranfer data from my PC to the Mac-it works just fine. Which leads me to believe somehow the camera isn't working with the Mac.
HOWEVER-I use a Digidesign Digi 002 rack attached to a firewire port on the back. The 002 has a passthrough firewire port on the back, so I hooked up the camera. Lo and behold, the Capture now works. But only by going through the 002.
I'd really like to be able to capture video by just plugging my camera inot the fron Firewire posts after I shoot some tape.
Does anybody have an idea why the front or rear firewire ports won't control or capture from my camera directly?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
    Greg

A couple of things to try…
    1) Open a new user account and see if it works there
    2) Reset PRAM and NVRAM…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    3) Reset the System Management Controller…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123
    4) Try your other Firewire ports
    5) Boot off another drive and see if it's your software rather than possibly hardware

  • Which firewire interface for Final Cut Pro on MacPro?

I currently own a Presonus Firepod, and it seems to work pretty well, but may sell this when I upgrade from a MacMini to a MacPro. I use my Mac for Logic Pro currently.
I anticipate running Final Cut Pro in the near future, so I'm wondering about the ability to read/generate SMPTE time code that the MOTU traveller supplies?
There will be no external mixer, so this interface will connect directly to speakers & headphones. (would be nice to be able to mute speakers and control headphone mix using just the firewire interface).
I don't anticipate needing more than 2 Mic inputs - and my current mike is a Rode NT1. (As the NT1 is not a top-of-the-line mic, unsure if I should place a lot of emphasis on worrying about the pre-ams?)
I would like decent mic preamps, and ability to graphically monitor input and output levels (is this graphic monitoring necessary, or is just the single overload indicator sufficient?).
Which interfaces in $600-$1500 range would work best with Final Cut Pro - and Logic Pro?

I saw the Traveller ads in Videography mentioning
time code, so I presumed it had an advantage over
    other interfaces.
I found this in some ad copy:
"""The Travler provides on-board SMPTE time code synchronization features that allow you to slave your Traveler system to SMPTE time code without a synchronizer. The Traveler provides a DSP-driven phase-lock engine with sophisticated filtering that provides fast lockup times and sub-frame accuracy. The included MOTU SMPTE Console software provides a complete set of tools to generate SMPTE for striping, regenerating or slaving other devices to the computer."""
So it likely uses an audio port for timecode I/O. However, unless you have external equipment that you want to slave to Logic Pro, (or have Logic slave to) e.g. a timecode DAT, then this really is not necessary. FCP would not see the Travaller as a "controllable" device.
For Final Cut Pro use, I'd probably shoot in HDV.
When shooting a green screen near my computer (or
maybe even on-site), I wondered if there would be an
advantage to recording the audio thru an interface
    like the traveller.
The advantage is that you could capture additional mics and audio tracks with your mac while the cameras shoot. Just slate your takes and sync up later.
Do I actually need an interface that provides time
code, or is that only needed for movie work?
I have SMPTE I/O on my Unitor8, directly accessable in Logic Pro. In 8 years I've probably used it twice to capture audio from some modular digital multitracks. So, unless you have some specific need.....
Maybe it is simpler just to connect to the mic
    directly to the camera's input?
Indeed. You should always have camera audio available. Anything else is supplemental. Alternatively, you could use the Travaller or RME, etc. as a "live to camera" mixer in a studio situation. Plug your mics into the interface, create a submix and send it to the camera while simultaneously capturing each mic to an individual track in Logic Pro. There are many possibilities.
