My macpro does not find its hard drive (reinstalling software)

Hi, My problem is the MacPro crashed. I turned it off and restarted it. There was no response except a white background, the Apple sign and the turning cursor clockwise. I tried to reboot with installation DVD disk. I only stopped after realising that I will lose all my work and documents. So far there is no movement. i am stuck. My hard disk is not visible when I use the re-installing disk. Your knowledge and assistance will be aPPRECIATED.....for a new yeAR GIG (DJ).

You will not lose all your data.  Install the OS disk and hold the C key down when starting up.  Start the install process and when you get to the point where you see a menu bar on top, stop.  Click on the Utilities tab and select from the drop down menu, DISK UTILITY.  When  in DU, click on the HDD in the left sidebar and then select 'First Aid' from the small menu bar.  Perform the 'Verify' and Repair' options.  Exit the install process.
This should put you back in operation unless the HDD is physically damaged.
Ciao.

  • HELP!  Powerbook G4 does not recognize its hard drive

I had a hard freeze this afternoon and my computer has not yet recovered. I could not force quit any applications and was forced to turn the computer off. When I turned it back on, I got the flashing question mark and file folder. Since then, I have tried every keystroke combination on start up that I could find to no avail.
Now I put the Tiger OS X DVD in there and when it prompts me to select a destination volume to install it, there are no hard drives to choose from.
I need some help here super fast. Either post a reply here or email me at [email protected]
    Thanks

There are some troubleshooting steps for this problem at A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac.
The inability of the system to find a hard drive for installation is concerning and could be a symptom of a hard drive gone bad.
If the steps in the link above do not help, it would be worth connecting your computer to another MAC with a firewire cable and seeing if you can boot in Firewire Target Disk Mode. If that works, your hard drive will show up on the desktop of the second machine. Then, you could try to copy over the contents of your user folder in order to back up your harddrive. However, if you really have a harddrive problem, there is no guarantee that this will work.

  • Help my computer does not recognise my hard drive

    Hi All,
Yesterday I turned my computer on to find that it would not start up. I tried following advice etc about starting up in safe mode etc but no help what I have found is that he computer does not recognise the hard drive anymore so when I out the osx install disk in and run system profiler and disk utility it does not show a hard drive. I have not done anything for this to happen. Can anyone help me with this.
    Thanks.
    Paul

Instead of using older OS X CD/DVD install to a new drive.
Where is your backup and clone?
Buy some drives! that is a must.
Pick up a FW case, you will need it to put the old drive in, and later, so you have an external and off line drive for backups and maintenance.
A copy of TechTool Pro 4/5 and Disk Warrior (DW first).
    SuperDuper to clone your drives.
Demo of Prosoft Data Rescue 3 to scan the drive once you have a system and you put the 'dead' drive in FW case.
Then do backups and preventative maintenance on a very regular basis and have at least two backup sets.
If you have been doing that, and know and have read those instructions in the past....

Uninstall the program. It should have come with an uninstaller. If not, contact the developer for instructions.

The beeps could be caused by something as simple as a loose internal wire or connection.  If it is under warranty (not sure how long that is, as WD drives range from 1 to 5 years depending on the model's series - I think "my passport" drives are 3 years) you could contact WD and ask them about it.
If it is out of warranty, you could also try opening the case and check the connections - the drive may be fine, and there have been posts on TomsHardware forums of people getting the beeps, opening up the case and the drive is fine, just some wire worked loose.

  • Windows XP re-installation does not recognize any hard drive - help

    Hi,
    I have X60s Model: 17044JU
    I have original XP installed.
My computer is very slow and I am trying to reinstall XP from my CD (and format HD so I clean everything).
When Windows installations blue screen shows up and loads drivers etc then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drive.
I thought I may need SCSI or RAID drivers but since I don't have floppy I can not load them.
Any help how to install new XP would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi
I changed BIOS setup from AHCI to Compatibility and indeed it worked.
However there is easier way to reload new system on thinkpad.
I didn't know that but you can press ThinkVantage button when you start your laptop and IBM utilities start up.
Then there is an option to reload the system to be in original state as shipped from the factory. It loads or drivers and initial programs. It also formats your hard drive.
    I found it pretty convenient.
    Thanks for help.

  • ArchLinux does not recognize IDE hard drives

I recently bought a new Gigabyte motherboard (GA-EP35-DS3P).  At the BIOS level, everything is OK.  The motherboard detects my hard drive and correctly reports its size, etc.  It places it at IDE Channel 4 Master.  However, when I boot Arch, no drives are recognized and I am taken to the recovery shell.
I tried another distribution (Linux Mint) and everything worked fine.  The drives were identified as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb.  They could be mounted and read just fine.  I hope I don't need to abandon Arch!

    jbromley wrote:
GRUB uses the BIOS to access the disk since when you boot, since there is no OS loaded. This is why GRUB can work but Linux can't find the hard drive Only once Linux boots will the /dev/sd* devices come into being.
Anyway, do you get any error or warning messages when you are booting before you are dropped into the recovery shell? You say you "boot" Arch, so I take this to mean you selected Arch from the GRUB boot menu, right? My first guess is that perhaps you need to regenerate your initcpio because it doesn't contain the correct drivers for your new equipment. Perhaps try running mkinitcpio to regenerate the initcpio files. If that alone doesn't work you may have to tweak your mkinitcpio.conf file to include the correct drivers.
    Good luck,
    j
The error message I get is:
"Attempting to create root device '/dev/sda6' ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda6' unknown ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel parameter.
Root device '/dev/sda6' doesn't exist, attempting to create it
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda6'
ERROR: Unable to create/detect root device '/dev/sda6'
Dropping to a recovery shell... type 'exit' to reboot
NOTE: klibc contains no 'ls' binary, use 'echo *' instead
I think the problem is exactly as you diagnosed.  How would you recommend running mkinitcpio as I cannot boot Arch?  I can boot into another distro and do a chroot to the Arch installation, but I don't think this would work right...

  • My iMac can't find its hard drive

Background: I had a series of kernel panic issues over the past few weeks. Despite my best efforts with fixing disk permissions and the like, it got progressively worse.
Today it hit another level -- I turned on the machine and the fan immediately went into overdrive, followed by the gray screen of death. This repeated through about 20 restarts.
So I put in the System disk and tried to run the disk utility. But it couldn't find the hard drive -- it told me the only drive I had was the CD. Same thing happened when I tried to change the startup disk. Same thing happened when I tried to run fskc.
So here's my question -- how do I get my machine to acknowledge that it does, indeed, have a hard drive? Anyone know of any fixes?
    Thanks in advance

If the installed disk won't recognize that there's a hard drive, then it's most probably a hardware failure that will require servicing; my guess is that the hard drive has failed.

  • My iMac does not recognize external hard drive

My iMac does not recognize my external hard drive.  Disk utility recognizes it and a test of the hard drive does not review any error.  I use the hard drive as a back up for the time machine.  This problem comes and goes.  It comes when I turn off and turn on the computer, with the hard drive attached.

    can be this reasons
01 , you have problem with connection ? check the port if you can find any problems physically .
    02. if not try to change the cable and with connection ,
    03. may be its good idea  to check the hard drive with another mac ?(if you have )
Did you note any diference of sound  from Hard Drive ? listen to it that carefully to note some unusual sound comes when the hard drive works.

  • WSE2012R2 Dashboard Stoage Tab Does Not Show ANY Hard Drives or Folders

I have been using WSE2012 for nearly two years as a "home" server. I recently decided to upgrade to R2. After spending several days trying to "migrate" to R2 without any success, I finally did a fresh install to my original system drive
(a 240Gb Samsung 840 Evo SSD). The install went well until I checked all of my data drives (4x2Tb, 2x1Tb, 1x3Tb and a 2Tb "storage spaces" drive). I found that only three of the drives were online and useable. The "storage spaces" drives
were not even visible in Disk Manager and all of the other drives were "offline". After doing a lot of searching with Google, I finally figured out how to make the "offline" drives "Online" with PowerShell. With much more searching,
I also finally figured out how to "bring back" the "storage spaces" drives with about four lines of PowerShell code so I thought I was finally home free... But no such luck. I then had a lot of trouble restoring my "ServerFolders"
although everything else seemed to be working. I also had rebooted several times while working on these things without any issues. After finishing up yesterday, I planning to finish working on the "ServerFolders" earlier today.
I ran into a problem right away, however, when I opened the Dashboard and went to the Storage tab only to find that NONE of the Hard Drives and "Server Folders" showed up. I had an alert that the "Server Storage Service" was
NOT running. I checked and found it to be "stopped" and in "manual" mode. After starting the service, the Storage Tab showed that it was being refreshed. After a lengthy wait, it never did refresh and the "Server Folders" item
on the Home Tab showed "N/A". I tried rebooting again. When the server came up, I checked the service again and found it to be running (although it was still on "manual")... But once again, Storage Tab never did refresh properly and still
showed nothing. This time I changed the service to "Auto" and also tried "Restarting" the service, to no avail. I rebooted again. This time, when it came back up, I first checked the service again and it was running and still on "Auto".
Before opening the Dashboard, I checked the "Files and Storage" section in "Server Manager" and everything looked good. All of my hard drives and my "storage spaces" drive appeared with no apparent issues so I thought that everything
was finally OK... Wrong!!!!! I opened the Dashboard and went back to the Storage Tab only to find that it still would NOT refresh so that NONE of my hard drives or folders were showing. I am totally lost at the moment. How can everything actually be there
and okay but NOT appear in the Dashboard which, by the way, was working fine yesterday -- and I did not make any changes whatsoever between yesterday and starting to work on the system today. I am totally lost. Can anyone please help me resolve this
    issue?????

PROBLEM SOLVED. As I was just getting ready to "bite-the-bullet" and reinstall 2012 R2, I discovered something that led me to the solution. When I was previously trying to restart the Windows Storage Service, I "thought" it was restarting
okay. I was restarting it by right-clicking on the service. When I "started" it this way without opening up the service properties, it would immediately change from "stopped" to "running". What I did not realize was that the service
was quickly stopping "without" refreshing the screen so that "running" was still displayed even though the service had stopped. Once I realized that the service was not actually restarting, I tried another Google search based on this fact
which led me to some forum threads that helped me solve the problem since I found others with essentially the same problem. I found two corrupted registry keys under Windows Server\Storage Services. One of the keys was a major entry, the other was in the "Folders"
subfolder. After deleting BOTH keys, the service restarted without any issues and my drives and folders reappeared in the dashboard. A reboot was "not" required. What a pain! But everything is good now.

  • Live type does not appear in hard drive

I'm in the middle of reinstalling Live Type on my computer. I deleted it earlier today, trashing everything that had "Live Type" in its name, and have tried reinstalling the software from the original discs.
I have two discs ("Live Type Data" 1 of 2 and "Live Type Data" 2 of 2) that I've tried to reinstall. I get the dialog boxes indicating that the discs are installing on the computer's hard drive, then after about 50 minutes, I get a message that "Installation was successful!" with a green check mark. After both discs were installed successfully, I restarted the computer (although there was no instruction to do that), but the software's icon didn't appear in my Applications folder. When I use "Find" to look for anything with "Live Type," all I get are files of previous titles that I'd created.
Is the application software on another disc and I'm only loading the "media" for the software's use?
A while ago, I installed only the first disc, but I still had the software's icon appear in my Applications folder.
Is the Live Type application software stored on my FCE 1 (or FCE 3) installation disc.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

I just got Final Cut Studio HD and was surprised it didn't have LiveType, which I love. I learned Final Cut at a college and they had LiveType. Still doing the install as we speak, but just wondering: Is it JUST AS EASY and fun in Motion as LiveType or is it way more involved? Is there any way to get LiveType?

  • MacBook does not recognize USB hard drive

    Hello,
I have a MacBook 10.5.8 and I have been using an external hard drive (Mobile Drive Clasic 2.5'' 80-GB USB-2.0) to keep saves of important files. It has been working fine until now but I have recently used the same USB drive on a Windows 7, which would often not allow me to eject it, so I did the unwise and simply plugged it off at any rate a few times. This did not appear to cause any problems - but when today I tried to copy one file from my desktop to the USB drive it seemed to lag, I hit cancel, I restarted the computer and since then the USB drive does not show up at all. I plugged it in my Mac to see if it was a Windows problem, but to my surprise it does not show up there either, not in the Finder (I have the box checked in my Preferences) and not even in Disk Utility.
Is it possible that the USB drive was damaged beyond repair and that I cannot retrieve the data? What could possibly be the problem? :/

If the drive used to work with both computers and now works with neither one of them, the fault is with the drive. If it is not showing up in Disk Utility that would suggest a hardware fault.
There are a number of data recovery services that are usually able to get data back off of even badly damaged hard drives, you might try working with one of them. DriveSavers is well thought of. They are not cheap though. You will want to decide how much that data is worth to you.
    Best of luck.

  • G3 does not see desktop hard drive.

Hello! Back in April 2006, I purchased a blue and white G3 from my employer. I installed some extra memory, wiped the hard drive clean and installed OS 10.3.x and Adobe CS. Everything worked beautifully.
I shut down the computer, unplugged it, wrapped it in plastic and stored it in a safe place until I moved to my new home. I recently took my G3 out of storage over the holidays and tried to set it up. When I turned it on, I got the “Happy Mac” symbol along with the blinking “question mark”. I was disappointed that all of the previous installations I had put in seemed to be missing.
I decided to re-initialize the hard disk (desktop) and re-install the OS 10.3.x and the other Adobe programs. The G3 has no problems starting up from the start up disk, but there is no desktop ( or hard drive) icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Only the start up disk icon is visible.
When I start to install the OS 10.3.x, I get stuck where it prompts me to select a volume to install the OS. There are no options. I cannot select my hard drive because it simply does not appear. The “options” button is “grayed” out.
I tried using the disk repair utilities and still I had no success in locating the hard drive.
There were 3 items which were showing up in the list, all of which had a “CD” icon. The first icon had a disk with a Japanese sounding name. I could not select it and I could not even verify or repair it. The second icon was also with a disk, with the name “Session 1”. Again, this could not be verified or repaired. The third icon was the start up disk icon.
It is as if my computer can’t see itself! I can’t install anything because there seems to be no desktop to install it into. It is quite frustrating, especially because I had taken the time to set it up last year and everything was working perfectly fine before my computer went into storage. My G3 seems to be “happy” even though it can’t start up without a start up disk. I am hoping that I don’t have a hard drive melt down. I would greatly appreciate some help on this! Thank you!

    Hi Limnos, Grant and Eustace,
Till now, I had my G3 on "sleep" with my start up disk in the CD drive. I followed Limnos' instructions and opened up the side again. I made sure I was grounded and I tapped the hard drive. There was no noise or whirring. I placed my fingers on it, and there were no vibrations. The Blue Moo was really blue now. I thought for sure the drive was dead. With a heavy heart, I began to close the computer up. As I clicked the side closed, all of a sudden, I heard the familiar "whir" of a hard drive. I dared not to get too excited. I quickly ejected the start up disk, and lo... the G3 started up on its own!!!!! I had my hard drive icon, my programs, everything was there!
I had no problems re-installing the OS 10.3.x, I had no problems upgrading my Adobe CS programs.
My hard drive was there, exactly where it was supposed to be.
I don't know what exactly what brought it back from the dead. It may have been a combination of all your good advice put together and a bit of luck. In any case, I am up and running and I am truly thankful to all of you for your help. I also learned quite a bit from this experience from you guys, and that in itself, was very valuable to me!
I can't believe how last week, I was thinking I may need to get rid of my G3. But I stuck to it, and with your help, I now have a fully functioning machine!
Buckets of thanks to you again!
The Blue Moo (a very happy Moo indeed!)

  • Can not find USB Hard Drive with Airport Utility Programme

I am quite new to MAC and I am having difficulty making my Iomega External HD seen by the Airport Extreme Base Station (new version). I have the latest Aiport Utility software 5.2.1 but when I go to the hard drive section it does not see it. The drive is connected via USB. Can anyone help me please.

Hi, this could be caused if the hard drive isn't in the right file system. To make it work, it needs to be formatted in a 'MAC OSX EXTENDED' format. You can do this in Disk Utility if you connect the drive directly to the computer and go to applications/utilities/disk utility.
Another question that may be asked this external hard drive, does it have its own power supply? If it does it should be ok, but some small portable thieves power which the router probably wont provide. If this is the case you can sort it by getting a powered USB hub (which don't cost much).
Another issue you might come across was a bug I found if you give the Hard Drive a name and connect it to the router and it appears and the next time you unplug the router power and connect it again it sees it but you cant connect to it on any computer over the network, the hard drive name needs changing every time you unplug the router, its a silly bug but im glad I finally worked it out.
Also, Airport Utility has a new software update, so have a look for it, should be 7.2.1 now!
Let me know how you get on!
