First off if it's > Repair Permisisons, then that's ok as Apple changed them so your going to see the same thing fixed over and over again.
If it's Repair Disk that is continously giving repairs, you need to run it again, and if it continues then you have a problem with the drive and you need to backup your filess off of it and seek a replacement.
A 1.5TB drive is rather large for 10.6's time, in fact 1TB is rather large.
If your only using 400GB, how about dropping down to something like 750GB at 7,200 RPM instead? 10.6 seems to handle that well on my machine.

My macbook pro is going slow lately
My macbook pro is going slow lately, it takes longer time to just open a finder window or a simple photo or word document or pdf document. Everything in general goes slower than before.
I don´t know what to do to fix this and have the macbook pro run as it used to before.
Thank you

Upgraded iPod Touch to v2.2.1, but feels slow/sluggish.
Hello.
I just upgraded my client's two years(?) old iPod Touch to v2.2.1 tonight on his MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5.8 with all updates). He hasn't updated its software for about a year or so he said, and this version was free. He also hasn't synchronized his iPod Touch for a year too (crazy, I know). Anyways, the upgrade and synchronizations were successful, but iPod Touch feels slower/sluggish like in e-mails, Safari, etc.
Is this normal? We didn't try reverting back to defaults. Thank you in advance.Thanks. I forgot to mention that this is an older model that doesn't have 3G. Only wireless for Internet access. And I forgot to follow-up too. It seems OK now. It was weird right after the upgrade and using it, everything felt slower and sluggish. Everything still seems to be still intact and working though.
If it happens again, then I will try your ideas.

I don't recall seeing reduced performance from 2.2.1, in fact I've reverted my 2G Touch back to 2.2.1 from 4.0. Have you tried the basics like:
o Power OFF/ON
o Reset
o Restore from backup
o Restore as a new iPod
Start with the higher steps first to see if you get better performance. -
The description is a bit vague, but it's hard to describe the exact problem. I hope I'm posting the correct sub forum.

If there is any other system information needed, please don't hesitate to ask.
Now the problem: well it's just general 'latency' and slowness of the computer, affecting nearly all applications. On a fresh boot when I try to login on the TTY I'm able to type half of the password before it gives me the prompt for it. Same when doing a 'su' in a urxvt.
Also, firefox is being very slow and unresponsive. Changing tabs goes slow, even typing text here right now lags from time to time (me typing faster then firefox showing the text). Running applications like SABnzbd makes all things go from bad to worse.
As you probably can understand, working on a computer which is feeling very laggy isn't very amusing. I hope there would be some pointers on how to get it working fast(er). Thanks for the suggestions so far .
I'm having indeed more then a 1gb free ram and no swap is used, so that's not causing the problem. At the moment that I checked the load to post it over here SABnzbd was actively downloading, so that caused some extra load. But even now, my computer semi-idle (read: only some terminals/firefox) active it still gives me:
20:03:18 up 9:09, 1 user, load average: 0.67, 0.63, 0.72
When I look into (h)top there is no process using excessive amounts of cpu. It seems relative idle, except for firefox popping up from time to time using 10% cpu for half a second. Nothing what should or could cause such a load, so it seems I'm 'affected' by the 2.6.35 bug?
I'm only posting this now because I started to get really annoyed by it (and it might have gotten worse with the .35 bug), but the system is feeling slow for some time now. -
My MacBook Air is so slow lately....I have a 3 month old new OS X, 10.9.1 version. I use Mozzilla Firefox......I am not tech savy! Arlene.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. It does nothing but produce human-readable data about the state of your computer. However, you need to be cautious about running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only run the test in safe mode, proceed anyway.
If you have more than one user, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
clear; shopt -s extglob; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s:\n\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/ /' <<< "$o") && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pc () { o=$(egrep -v '^[[:blank:]]*($|#)' "$2"); Pm "$1"; }; Pp () { o=$($PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o="${o##+( )}"; R () { [[ "$r" -eq 0 ]]; }; [[ "$o" -ne 0 ]] && printf "$Fs" "$1" "$o"; }; a=$(id | grep -w '80(admin)'); r=1; [[ "$a" ]] && { sudo true; r=$?; }; t=`date +%s`; clear; { [[ "$a" ]] || echo $'No admin access\n'; [[ "$a" && "$r" -ne 0 ]] && echo $'No root access\n'; system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; Pm "POST"; o=$(nvram boot-args | awk '{$1=""; print}'); Ps "boot-args"; o=$(ls /L*/L*/Dia*/*.panic | wc -l); Ps "Panics"; o=$(ls /L*/L*/Dia*/*.c* | tail); Pm "System crash logs"; o=$(ls L*/L*/Dia* | tail); Pm "User crash logs"; o=$(syslog -F bsd -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|SATA W|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; $5=""; print}'); Pm "Kernel messages"; o=$(df -m / | awk 'NR==2 {print $4}'); [[ $o -lt 5120 ]] && Ps "Free space (MiB)"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0)); Ps "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$(printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]}) || o=; Pm "Total CPU usage" && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); Pm "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); Pm "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; R && o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); Pm "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); Pm "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; for d in {/,}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d" | egrep -v '\.DS_Store|^com\.apple'); Pm "$d"; done; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {/,}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB\ :CFBundleIdentifier "$d/Info.plist") || ID="No bundle ID"; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|\.hpio|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf "$Fb" "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); Pm "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); Pm "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); Pm "Inserted libraries"; R && o=$(sudo profiles -P | grep :); Pm "Profiles"; o=$(find {,/u*/lo*}/e*/periodic -type f -mtime -10d); Pm "Modified periodic scripts"; for f in fstab sysctl.conf crontab launchd.conf; do Pc $f /etc/$f; done; Pc "hosts" <(sed '1,10d' /etc/hosts); Pc "User launchd" ~/.launchd; R && Pc "Root crontab" <(sudo crontab -l); Pc "User crontab" <(crontab -l); R && o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); Pm "Login hook"; Pp "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; Pp "User login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; Pp "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); Ps "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); Ps "Font problems"; o=$(find L* -type f ! -size 0 -name *.plist ! -exec sh -c 'plutil -s "$1" >&-' {} {} \; -print); Pm "Bad plists"; o=$((`date +%s`-t)); Ps "Elapsed time (s)"; } 2>/dev/null | pbcopy; exit 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important, so don't worry about it.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again. If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window.
When you post the output, you might see in your browser the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the output on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may offer you advice based on the output of the script. They speak only for themselves and I don't necessarily agree with their views.

my macpro runs slow with or without internet on..... How can I find out if something is running in the background?
Please boot in safe mode and test. Still slow? If you connect to a wireless network, you may have to connect with Ethernet in safe mode.
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)

My photoshop cs6 seems to be running very slow lately--not sure why?
Have you tried resetting your PRAM?
Shut the Mac down.
Holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys, press the power button.
Listen for the "startup chime" to sound three times and release the keys.
It should run better after it finishes booting up. -

Macbook pro 13 2011 feels slow
Hi everyone, I have a MBP 2011 Lion upgraded to 8GB ram and upgraded to 120GB vertex 3 Solid State HD and internal 500GB apple HD that it came with. When I first boot the laptop top everything is fine but as the day progresses the thing feels slower and slower. I can really feel this in safari. The two finger scrolling becomes choppy and pages tend to load much slower. The cure of course is to reboot and everything is fine again. Could Lion be causing this because i dont remember snow leapard doing this before? I have Google Chrome and FIrefox and they both feel the same as Safari. I am not really running anything in the background. I have pleny of storage left on the SS (35GB). I run activity monitor and everything is behaving normal. Plenty of ram. I run frozen flash so no unnessesary flash programs are running. Any help would be appreciated.

My Mac is running very slow lately
My Macbook is running excrushiatingly slow lately and I'm really not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. I've never had to delve into what makes a Mac tick before because I've simply never had many problems with it so I really don't know where to even start. Pretty much all of my apps are running slow and the turney rainbow circle thing keeps appearing for longer and longer each time I load a new page in Safari, I open my image folder through Photoshop, I want to play a song in iTunes, whatever I do, my Mac just seems to have to think really hard about it. I've googled the problem and all I seem to find are nonsense sites trying to get me to download something to clean up my Mac or organise my Trash or make my Apps run faster, etc.
Hey Beckalooby,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing performance issues with your Mac Pro. The following resource may provide a solution:

I have the 2011 mac mini unibody; Its the 2.3ghz i5 Dual core model, with 2GB of ram and a 5400rpm hdd.
At times it does feel slow, say when exiting an app it occasionally will freeze up, opening the launchpad is laggy not smooth like the iMacs. Dock magnification is really laggy so i had to turn it off. sometimes when opening a minimised app after the transition the window will flash completely white(Safari) Some apps take a stupid amount of time to open. Sometimes the transition between desktops/dashboard is laggy, then again sometimes it isn't :S Istat pro tells me that there about 100MB of ram free when only running one app. like right now, i'm only running iTunes and safari and i only have 65MB free. Sometimes when i know the hard drive is under slight strain; sound will stutter/music will stutter at times comes to a complete stop for a few seconds.
I understand the HDD is slow, but on the model with 4GB of ram that i used in the apple store earlier, NONE of these things seem to happen, which is, annoying. and i highly doubt the extra 200Mhz make a difference, so i think this is happening for a good 3 reasons.
1. The Intel HD3000 graphics
2. The Low amount of ram
3. Lion is a buggy ram eating mess atm
If i upgrade the ram to 8GB from crucial, will this fix most of these irritating problems :/?
I'm running at a very high res. btw thru HDMI
1900x1200I just upgraded my Mac Mini 2011 model (just purchased a couple of weeks ago, August 2011) and got my two 4GB SIMs from OWC. Works like a charm. Make sure you push the SIM all the way in. I didn't and my Mac Mini would not boot up. It kept beeping and to stop the beeping I just had to unplug it. I re-sat the SIMs all the way in until they stopped (you should not be able to see the metal contacts once the SIM is sat correctly. Don't be shy about pushing it in all the way. Of course take all static safety measures so you don't destroy your SIMs or some other electronics inside your Mac Mini. So easy it was ridiculous. My Mac Mini flies now !
*********************** Lion is now Fly'in **********************
Hope this helps anyone who reads this and anyone who has any problems. Aloha !
P.S. To anyone who understands that I am speaking from the past tense of "sit" the SIM. I purchased (2) 4GB SIMs from OWC (Google them to find their website.) I also purchased memory for my Mac Pro and they actually didn't work the first time but OWC kindly replaced my memory and it works like a charm. -
Older MacPro running slow--keep it or get newer Mac?
We have a MacPro, but a little older generation, 2005-6. Processor: 2 x 2 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
I added a second hard drive a few years back, as well as more RAM (though now I can't remember how much! If this info would be helpful, please let me know where to look it up and I'll add that to my description.) The second disk is a TB disk with about 450 GB free. We store all our photo, video and music content on the second drive. The boot disk is the original one that came with the Mac. It is not full, but has about 75 GB free. We have OS 10.6.8 installed on the boot HD, as since it is the original disk it won't accept the latest versions of OS Maverick or whatever is the most recent.
In the past few months, it has started to shut down instead of sleeping. If, however, an internet browser window is open, it will go to screen saver and then the screen will sleep, but not the computer, but the computer won't shut down, either. Basically, if all applications are closed, instead of sleeping, the computer will shut down. It will turn back on with just a key stroke, which is not typical when one does a proper shut down. It's like the key stroke or pushing the power button awakes it from sleep, only it wasn't sleeping, because it goes through the whole "ding" of turning one, apple screen, then sign-in. Does that make sense?
Also, it is running SUPER SLOW. If I have our browser (either Safari or Chrome) open, as well as iTunes or iPhoto, it's even worse.
Basically, my question is this: should we, or CAN we even, try to tidy up the computer we have, possibly replace a hard drive or add more RAM, or would it behoove us to just get a new computer?
We definitely don't need the capacity of a MacPro anymore, as the photo editing and such I was assuming I needed when we originally bought the computer is minimal enough that we don't need that kind of power any more. I'm thinking an iMac or MacBook Pro even would do. We do not do any gaming, just usual internet usage, photo editing (Photoshop), minimal video editing just with the Mac software, and basic word processing/power point type stuff. We are not programmers, professional photograpers or videographers.
I would *like* to salvage our computer, as I feel it has space available (empty drive bays) that we are not currently using, probably is just a little old and needs a clean-up. I back things up to our Time Machine often, have minimal desktop icons, clean out the caches, basic maintenance. I'm not a knowledgeable enough computer person to do much more. Is it worth trying to salvage it? When I contacted the Apple store a while back about checking it out they basically laughed at me and asked why I still had such a dinosaur. I HATE thinking that it's becoming necessary to chuck out a computer every 5-8 years and buy a new one, especially when it's one that has been designed to expand. But perhaps that's naïve. I don't want to waste time if it's hopeless, and am not opposed to buying a new machine if need be. BUT, I am philosophically opposed to chucking out something that can be spruced up.
Opinions? Recommendations? Please keep in mind we are novices, so tech talk often goes over my head. The most tech I've done is installed the second hard drive and extra RAM.
Thanks.EtreCheck version: 1.9.11 (43) - report generated June 4, 2014 9:38:35 PM GMT+01:00
