My Mail application will not open a window on my desktop?

Anyone else had this problem of Mail not opening on their desktop after having done a software update- any suggestions how to get it to open? I am on 10.9 OSX operating system now.

Generally, the ikons you'll place on your desktop, (and all of those which reside on the DOCK) will be 'aliases,' which simply direct the machine to follow the path to the Application itself.
Your 'Applications' folder should be visible in the left-hand collum on any open window. Open it. If an Application will open directly it means that the path to the alias was broken and you need to delete it and make a new one, or track down its real location through the finder. Try not to ever place Applications themselves on your desktop.
After 8 days without Mail, I just succeeded at restoring mom's connections on her iMac. I'll be happy to make more suggestions as needed...

  • Mail application will not open

My mail application quit opening a few weeks ago. When I try to open it with the icon on the dock and in the finder the screen just blinks. Even my computer savvy wife cant figure it out. My next stop is the genius bar unless there are some geniuses here. I can still get mail via .mac log in but cannot send links or documents as the OS mail application will not open when I need to send them.
    Any suggestions????

I would take your OS X installation disc and insert it in the drive, then restart the Mac and hold down the C key until you see the spinning cursor on screen. When it finishes loading, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and first Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions, then reboot from your HD, eject the OS X disc and try Mail again.
If that doesn't work, then the best thing in terms of time and effort would be to do an Archive and Install of OS X 10.5, with the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. This will install a new copy of 10.5, while preserving all of your current folders and applications, and moving all the old ones to a folder named Previous System. You can then use Software Update to bring it current to 10.5.3, run Repair Permissions when that's done, then Mail should work normally again. Once you've confirmed that and that all your other programs and files are intact and working, you can delete the Previous System folder.

  • Mail Application will not open after 10.6.8 update

So, I'm currently trying to update my parent's computer and in the process of updating their Mail application it has become unusable.  My computer at home (not my parents computer) ran into the same problem before I updated to Lion and deleting the preferences for Mail solved it.  Plus, I have read previous posts about this similar problem and a typical troubleshooting solution was to delete the Mail preferences.
After all of my software updates (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and deleting the preferences for Mail, I still receive the same error message when trying to open the application.  "Mail can't be used on this version of mac OS X.  Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications foler on your computer."  My applications folder has not been adjusted, edited or even touched from it's original state in the dock/home folder.
I contacted AppleCare support and they advised me to reformat my computer.  I think that's a little... unneccesary??  It's just Mail that isn't working.  The rest of the applications (e.g. Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, etc.) open just fine.
Anyway, do you have any advice or insight to my problem here?
    Much appreciated!  Thanks!

After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before.  Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded.  It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly.  And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail?  A startup disk is not accessible for me right now.  Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website?

Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update.

Or download and apply, or reapply, the 10.6.8 Combo update first, then apply the Security Update again.

Hello - when I click on my desktop mail icon, nothing happens. I'm not sure how to fix this and have looked but didn't find the answers, I know it's probably very basic, but would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Mail application will not open at all

My Mail app won't open at all. It bounces once and then nothing. I ran the Disk Utility and re-started. I tried opening it with the Shift key down, and tried moving the Mail folder and the preferences files (but it won't open at all, so I don't think that is really relevant anyways). I created another user account and the problem is duplicated in that account. What do I do next? Do I need to re-install the Mail application? How do I do that?
    Many thanks in advance.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

What does “I ran the Disk Utility” mean? Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, as well as the latest Security Update released for that version of Mac OS X that included updates for Mail. If you were running Mac OS X 10.3.9, that would be:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
I’ve provided a link for Security Update 2007-003 instead of for the latest Security Update because I don’t know for sure whether the latest includes previous security updates — from the file size, it looks like it does, but the documentation doesn’t say so (it does in the case of Security Update 2007-003).
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • HT2500 Mail application will not open

I have an older macbookpro 10.6.8 and unable to open mail after mail asks to restore email.

Mac OS X v10.6: Mail.app won’t open, or "You can't use this version of Mail…" alert after installing Security Update 2012-004:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

  • Mail application will not open... Why?

Recently, I deleted a whole bunch of icons from my desktop, because they were doubles... I wanted them ONLY on the dock, not on the desktop (excuse my ignorance in not understanding computers very well).  I also emptied the trash and THEN realized i had deleted not just the shortcuts but the whole applications (Mail, iCal, iPhoto, Address Book, and things like Firefox, etc.). Needless to say I messed up.  I got out the original Installation CD's and reinstalled the software.  NOW, when I try to open Mail, a message pops up telling me "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X." Had the mail I had been using been updated?  Where do I go/what do I do to get a newer version of mail? All other programs/apps are working fine, and all data was saved... Just can't get into my MAIL.  Help, please!?

I have a nearly identical problem and also experienced a Mail- 'version' issue when up-grading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8.  "Updater' seems to miss the fact this is Not an Intel model iMac, and it acts like it needs a firmware-update. So, I'm going backwards and reinstalling the System entirely, (which historically has never been the most logical choice on a Mac.) Luckily, the Installation DVD contains some 'Optional' installers, including >>  Mail  <<!
Stupidly, you can't do anything with this application unless it is synchronized with its own historic files. The issue becomes one of isolating all of those items which it generated earlier, Then re-installing, Then placing these key files back into a position where they can be imported. One quickly learns to use anyand all  'back-up' methods available, nthe simplest of which is probably to burn a CD of each USER folder, especially: "Library"
Time Machine may provide yet another level of conflicts.Like, I'm not sure if it 'likes' my other back-up application, operational or not. "Auto-update" (as you now see) is not the ideal way to leave your Mac set.
Can you find all of these files in  User/Library/Mail?:
    Available feeds
    BackupTOC
Envelope Index   (seems to control everything about launching)
    IMAP [name of your mailbox(es)]
Mailboxes          (possibly all your old stuff)
    MessageRules.plist
    MessageRules. "  backup
    MessageSorting
    ..etc
    MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded
    SmartMailboxes.plist    (yeah sure)...

  • Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail which is already the default mail program which is already set as the default mail program

Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail. Windows Live mail is already set as my default e-mail program.

Sorry you're having this problem. I think it was previously reported only by Windows XP users.
When you reinstall, were you making Firefox your default browser? Some users have reported that ''not'' making Firefox the default browser was an effective workaround.
However, you may have success with this approach, suggested by a user in another thread, which appears to more thoroughly update the Windows registry:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
Does that resolve the issue for you?

  • Mail application will not answer

    Mail application will not answer.
Lately I tried to solve a problem concerning Scandinavian letters. The thing is that Scandinavian letters in 'rich text' with Tiger Mail sometimes show up like Chinese signs or reversed questionmarks in Windows-recipients' mail.
Tom Gewecke explained it is due to two bugs in mailprogram in outdated MS Outlook.
I did what suggested. One of the suggesstions was to set Mail's default encoding to UTF-8. To do this I had to open Utilities/Terminal and type:
    'defaults write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset "UTF-8"'
I also put in a dingbat character in every mail to WIN-recipients, which was another suggestion to force MS Outlok to identify and use UTF-8.
This may have solved the problem so far. I think so.
It may be a coincidence. But after a day or so my Mail app. have troubled me ever since.
The application will not answer. It will not show the mails in the mailboxes.
I can't read og send mails. I can't quit the application, but have to force-quit
The connection to the internet is OK. Window/Mail-doctor shows there is connection to the internet. But in the Window/Activity the view shows that the activity is blocked.
    Please, anyone?!

    Hi again David.
Thankyou for you support so far. Had to sleep and do stuff … problem transformed:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Move the entire Mail folder out of
~/Library/ -- be sure to not overwrite the
    backup copy you did before.
    3. Open Mail. If any of your POP accounts is
configured to remove messages from the server right
away, either tell Mail to go offline immediately
after opening it, or shut down your Internet
connection before opening Mail. Then, configure the
account to leave Mail on the server for some time, so
that we can later get rid of the newly created Mail
    folder without losing anything.
    Post back with your observations.
:: I have done the three steps.
:: Then I moved back all my original mailboxes to the Mail-folder just to find out that all the messages in them will not load in Mail app. when I open it. I have all my original named mailboxes visible in Mail, but the content of messages will not show.
:: Other features in Mail are now at work: it opens and closes, I receive, send etc.
:: In ~/User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes on the other hand I find all the earlier recorded messages as .emls-files. But they don't show in Mail app.
:: Then I startede to import my messages from a copy of the removed and back-moved Mail-folder now placed on my external HD. This is extremely slow. Mail app. crashes again and again. Maybe because I have a huge pile of messages (more than 30.000).
:: If I divide each of Message-folder in my Mailboxes in the Mail-folder into smaller portions of messages I can succeed in importing them, 5 by 5 or 10 by 10. This off course is very, very time-consuming.
:: Lately the Import-folder generated by import in Mail app. disappeared! Again and agian it does not show by import. So I can't use this feature at the moment. Why does it disappear?
:: So how can I make the messages — which are present in the in ~/User/Library/… — visible in Mail app. again?
:: How can I make a better record and archive-system of my messages, maybe year by year (without having to save each one of them as RTF-files)?
    Thankyou,
    riprap

  • ITunes 10.6.0.40 will not open on Windows 7, no error messages come up. Have tried un-installing it and re-installing it many times.

iTunes 10.6.0.40 will not open on Windows 7, no error messages come up. Have tried un-installing it and re-installing it many times. Please help.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases.
Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)

My Classic OS9 applications will not open, and I cannot find the classic OS9 application showing in the preferences window.I tried installing Classic OS9 on a disc I had from another computer but maybe it was the wrong disc

Here is apple's take on the subject.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929
    Try this:
    1) on your eMac update the machine to 9.2.2
-- ( it needs to be 9.2.2 I think & do not know if you can update to 9.2.2
on Mac OS X.  I think you can update on X, but not 100% sure. )
    2) get a flash drive
    3) format to flashdrive to Mac OS extended
-- ( guess you could use journaled.  )
-- ( need to perserve resource forks.)
    4) copy the folder
         System Folder
    to the flash drive.
-- ( this is the mac os 9 folder.  Only the Max OS X will/may have the 9 on the folder. )
-- ( do not move it on emac like to the desktop etc. )
    5) copy to your iMac.
    6) Bless classic folder.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929 for how.
Let me know how it goes.  Could try it out since I have Classi running in a partition on this machine.
