  • Lion Mail doesn't open a window

I keep finding unwelcome changes in Lion, especially Mail. Now I notice that Mail doesn't open a window if I bring Mail to the front and no window is already open, and if a window is minimized it won't open it either as it used to do in Leopard. I have to go to the added trouble of going to File > New Viewer Window to get the regular window or click on the window in the dock. I don't understand why this was changed, it just makes more trouble.
I know people complain about changes, but I just need to know if there's a way, maybe with the help of Terminal, to bring it back to where it was?
    (I am in classic layout)

    No problems,
Its caught me out before too.

  • TS2537 mail doesn't open from dock on my iMac; I have to go through Yahoo to get mail

Mail doesn't open from dock on my iMac, even though top left of screen indicates mail is open

Yes. And then I try to open (or relaunch), and the light comes on, but no window opens

  • Mail doesn't open. and NO dialogue box!

    Hello!
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. Mail doesn't open. The icon in the dock jumps up once but that's it. No dialogue box or any other warnings. I even tried to open it from the Finder but that doesn't work either.
I don't know what else to do as I can't even look at any preferences nor do I want to delete the programme as I need my emails (i use it for work so can't loose all those emails, if I haven't done that already).
Does anybody have an idea what else I can try? Thanks!

This is the strangest thing ever. I created a new user account along with a password but it doesnt let me log in as that user. As a matter of fact I can't even log in under any of my users (not even the "guest" where there is no password required!) and yes, I do know the passwords.
Therefore couldn't check whether Mail opens in another account.

  • Mail doesn't open it crushes immediately... now safari suddenly quits also

Mail doesn't open... it crushes immediately... it has happened before... I have tried, I have backed up the folder mail from the user-library, then trashed the com.apple.mail.plist, then trashed the whole application itself, brought back both, from the back up... still nothing...
    Please Help
now safari suddenly quits also when filling a form, like on mapquest

I found the solution in this article... it seems the culprit is address book...

  • Mail doesn't open from dock

mail doesn't open from dock, after I installed mavericks. Is that a "feature"?

Great news, in that case this is user a specific issue which we should be able to resolve by moving one plist.
*Note read the instructions carefully and ask quesitons if you don't understand something.
First > Create a folder on your desktop so we can backup the plist that we removing that was it can be put back if anything...  Call it Dock Plist
Second > Open a Finder windows > up on the menu bar click on "Go" > Hold the option key on your keyboard and you should see Library come up click on it... This will place you inside your user specific Library folder aka ~/Library...
Third > Go into Preferences folder > locate a file called com.apple.dock.plist and drap/drop into the folder you created on the desktop
Fourth > Click on the Apple (top left) > Logout...  Log back and test it.  The system automatically creates a new com.apple.dock.plist with no settings so your dock will go back to default, test mail and see if that resolves the issue.

  • Mail doesn't open when clicking on hyperlinked email addresses on websites

I have never had a problem with Mail opening automatically if I click on a hyperlinked email address. Suddenly instead of launching Mail, clicking on the hyperlinked address opens an invalid Google page.
I've tried doing this in both Safari and Firefox and the same thing happens. I also have a Gmail account and this has only started happening since my Google Notifier stopped working. If I click on that it also takes me to an invalid Google page.
    Is my Mac Mini possessed?

Thanx, Ernie. Mail is selected and now everything seems to be working, including the Google notifier. I deleted a bunch of cookies and emptied the cache so maybe that did something. Plus I rebooted after downloading the latest software updates from Apple.
Do you have any suggestions of routine maintenance I can do on a regular basis to make sure my hard drive doesn't get too cluttered with junk?

  • Mail doesn't open under my user

Mail opens with an empty screen. In order to see my inbox I need to goto Mailbox tab and use GoTo inbox.
This happens on my user account and not the other user account.
    I've deleted com.apple.mail.plist but doesn't make a difference.
    Any suggestions
    Don

    Hi Don,
First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    Couple more things to try...
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving these folders to the Desktop then reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
Move Envelope Index to the Desktop in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail

  • "Mail" doesn't open all of the way up....

First off, i'd like to express my extreme dissapointment with Apple support line. I was on hold for 10 minutes before being asked what the nature of the problem, after stating that my "Mail" program was not working, she asked for my serial number and decided i had to pay $45 to be transfered to a technician. HUH?? For my Mail program i have to be transfered to a freaking technician?? Let's be serious!!
    Please, pardon me....
So a couple days ago i clicked on Mail from my dock. The icon in the dock bounced, as normal, and in the finder, it said that i was open. The little arrow was below the icon in the dock and everything. The only problem was, the normal mail window did not open. My curser became a little text curser instead of an arrow or even a spinning circle. Nothing was working, i couldn't read my mail, open the window or nothing. I could click on another progam and click on Mail in the dock and it would bring the window up, but everything was all gray. Like it was trying really hard to load. I checked this forum for the same problem, i ended up deleating that "com.apple.mail.plist" file and trying to re-set-up my mail program. I can get all the way to the outgoing mail server set up, i type in that information, and the little spinning/loading dealy spins...and spins....and spins. I let it spin for a while and i got nothing. Nothing happens. No error message....no moving on....just frustration of myself. Please help in any way. Or tell me where i can go to get help. (besides Apple support line...they suck). Thank you very much!

While we all have MacBooks in this forum only a few have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community. You should also post this question there. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Clicking on a document in google mail doesn't open a preview in new tab on Windows but it does on my Mac. How do I fix this?

I use google mail for work and personal mail. When using my Mac, I click on a document (PDF, Excel, etc) in an email message and it opens a preview of that document in a new tab.
On my Windows PC, I do the same thing and it just sits there. I have checked the pop-up blocker and some of the settings but can't figure out why it works in one and not in another.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Mail doesn't open any message window unless I restart Mail

    Hey guys,
This is really killing me here. Every once in a while when I click "new message" or "reply" nothing happens! If I quit mail and restart it - I find blank messages in the drafts folder - one empty message for every time I clicked "new message" or "reply" before quitting. Is there some kind of reset that will kill this sucker? I hope so. Really driving me nuts!
    Appreciate any help!
    Alex

    Hi all,
The exact same this is happening to me. After I restart mail, the reply message opens, once for each time I hit reply. Same with new message. Also, I tried opening a note I had been working on for weeks, and it didn't open, so I restarted, closed the note (along with 10 other reply windows), and the note didn't save?
Also, mail works fine for awhile, then begins doing this.
Very frustrating, thanks for any help.

  • Mail Doesn't Open

Hey everyone.. I have been having problems with my mail the last couple of days.. what happens is it opens with a blank screen of the mail (does not show my old messages) and it practically freezes and and the beach ball appears forever.. then if i go to force quit it say the mail is not responding. ANy ideas? any help would be great....
    thank you

Does Mail really crash (i.e. quits unexpectedly) or does it freeze (i.e. becomes unresponsive)? If Mail is really crashing (not freezing) even when launching it holding the Shift key down, then I don't think it's the same problem as the one described by the OP in this thread, and it would be more appropriate to start a new thread with your own problem. Actually, there have been several threads describing crashes recently, so you may want to read other threads first.

  • Mail doesn't open/download immediately

Is it normal to have incoming mail take awhile to open up?  The "loading" message comes on and runs for 10 seconds or more and the email does not appear immediately.

Sounds normal to me, 10 seconds is a bit long but not really anything to worry about I think. I use Gmail IMAP and it usually takes a few seconds for the emails to begin coming in, usually about 3 or 4 seconds, it's got to do with your connection speed and the speed of the email sever.

  • Mail doesn´t open with in-box

    Hello !
Since 2 weeks or so mail opened with a folder "october12" and not with the in-box.
I try to "highlight" in-box, close mail and open it again, but still the same.
What can I do to make mail open with the in-box ?
    Thanks in advance !

What happens in the Safe Mode?
    Safe Mode - About
    Safe Mode - Yosemite
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Mail doesn't open any windows

When I go into imail - I can see and read the contents in my inbox/outbox, but cannot open any of the messages.
Likewise I cannot open a window to write a new mail. Infact I can't open any window at all, including the Mail / About Mail pop up window.
This suddenly happened this morning shortly after sending a mail.
    Anyone had a similar problem?
Or know how to rectify it?
    Yours, bemused in Belgium

Create a New User Account on your Mac, and as that New User open Mail and if it does crash set up one email account as a test. If a POP account, set it to leave messages in the server after download.
See the following if not familiar with adding a new user account:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
This will test the app itself vs your current User Account.
