My mail - incoming, sent, deleted, spam -- all of it just disappeared yesterday.  Why and how can I fix it?

Also, Apple keeps asking for and then turning down my password . . . and then, suddenly, on the 3rd try or so, it accepts it.  It wants to e-mail me so I can set up a new password, but I'm not receiving any mail so how will that help?
