My MBP crashes with diagonal video issues, and will only boot in Safe Mode. Now what?
My 17" MBP (2007, 2.33 mHz) crashed the other night as I was trying to copy some music off a friend's iPod. Now, on boot, it will show the gray Apple logo, then clear the screen, but never go farther (and the fan starts up a terriific rumble after a few minutes). It is also showing distorted diagonal lines across the display.
Things I've found:
* It won't boot to the OSX Leopard DVD, just spins, and spits out the Snow Leopard DVD
* If I put it in FW Target mode it will mount on my iMac, but the FW 800 port is so skitchy/loose it loses connection eventually
* If I boot it in safe mode, everything works--no video distortion, can connect to a USB drive, which I did to back up the entire contents, and I can mount the Leopard DVD
* During that backup (using Chronosync), no disk errors except for an Aperture library failure.
I'm not sure what to do next. Boot to the Leopard DVD via safe mode to renistall the system, hoping that it'll work after it restarts? If I were in OS9 I'd be using extension manager to turn features on and off to see what's crashing, but it doesn't look like I have that capability with Safe Boot.
Any thoughts would be welcome, let me know of any other info you need.
Thanks!
Oh, two other things: I ran disk utility and repaired permissions, didn't fix the problem. And I don't have one of the video cards from that era that was covered by Apple even after warranty, one of the first things I checked

Firefox crashes on opening and will only start in safe mode
On starting, Firefox gives me 2 options: to reset Firefox or open in Safe mode. If I choose reset, it crashes.
I have restarted the computer, reinstalled Firefox and disables hardware acceleration. I have also checked that Windows update KB 2670838 does not exist on my system.hello, could you provide your latest few submitted crash reports? please enter '''about:crashes''' into the location bar, copy the latest few report ids from there & paste them here into a forum reply. this will give us a better understanding what may be triggering those crashes.
i'd also recommend to run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner]. -
MacBook Pro 13" Only boots to safe mode and running VERY slow.
Hi...
Not posted on here before, but am desperate so hoping there are some experts out there who can help...
I have 13" Macbook pro which has ceased to work properly - it runs very slowly and will only boot in safe mode.
I have installed a new hard disk, but I get the same problem whether I (try to) boot from the old HHD or the new one.
The new drive was imaged using Carbon Copy Cloner.
I have run the repair disk priorities in disk utility and verifying the disk says all OK.
I have set the startup disk to be the new hard disk, and cleared the NVRAM via cmd-option-p-r...
As things stand at the moment, rebooting (not in safe mode) leaves me with the grey screen and apple logo (and no obvious activity for 10+ mins (so far)).
Booting in safe mode takes 3+ mins but I do get to a user login prompt and can get to a desktop.
Any ideas / help very much appreciated as I urgently need to get this machine working!
Thanks!Domonic White,
when you ran Disk Utility, did you do so from your user account, or from Recovery mode? There are four options there: Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, Verify Disk, and Repair Disk. Which of these did you do in Disk Utility?
Have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller?
Have you tried logging in as your administrative user, opening the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, creating a new standard user (e.g. “Test”), and trying to log in as the new user, to see if the slow performance affects the new user also?
There is a chance that this could be due to a faulty internal SATA cable. If you have an external disk enclosure, or a SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FireWire adapter, try booting from one of your drives when it’s externally connected. If it works fine that way, but is sluggish when internal, that could point to your internal SATA cable as the culprit. -
2011 MBP only boots in safe mode after yosemite update
After attempting to update to yosemite, 2011 MBP (16GB Ram, 1TB HD) will only boot into safe mode. If I reboot without holding the shift key, I get the Apple logo and progress bar ......... that never goes away, just hangs about half way through. Any help?
DanHey there Danielrbjo,
It sounds like you are unable to boot your mac without using Safe Boot. I would use the other troubleshooting from the following article, named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Reset the NVRAM / PRAM.
If the gray screen issue persists, go to the next section.
Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware
Remove any non-Apple RAM or other third-party hardware upgrades (such as expansion cards or third-party optical drives or hard drives, if present) to help isolate the issue. This is necessary to get as close as possible to the original factory hardware configuration of your Mac.
If you are not sure which RAM modules or other hardware is Apple or third-party, or if you are not comfortable performing these steps, or if you have a Mac mini, consider contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Otherwise, perform these steps before going to the next section.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Open your Mac to access the memory slots. Refer to the User Guide that came with your Mac, or search Apple Support Manuals for a PDF copy of your Mac's User Guide.
Remove any third-party RAM that has been installed.
Reinstall the Apple RAM that came with the computer if available. Note that Mac OS X 10.5 requires 512 MB or more of RAM; Mac OS X 10.4 requires 256 MB or more of RAM.
If your Mac starts up with only Apple RAM installed, contact the vendor of your third-party RAM.
If you have installed a third-party drive, ensure it is running the latest firmware. Otherwise, reinstall the Apple drive that came with the computer if available.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the best,

i have a macbook 2011 and its booting to the apple with a loading bar. it gets halfway and changes to a screen with the apple and a spinning circle. It spins untill it dies. will not boot to safe mode. Do not have orriginal osx disk either.... HELP
It happened after an update

It's a MBP mid 2010. Last year it had some problems and an Apple authorised shop changed the HD and upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After that it seemed fine. Recently it started getting very slow and apps (e.g. Chrome, Flash) would crash. At some point it seemed stuck so I gave it a hard shutdown - bad idea. After that it would only boot in Safe Mode. I ran repar disk and repair permissions from the Disk Utility and it booted normally again but extremely slow. I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2, but didn't solve it. I tried booting with Command D to have a hardware diagnostic - it wouldn't boot and now it only boots in Safe Mode.
All data is backed and I have an external HD (but not an OS X Disc). Ready to anything. Help please!

Also you can perform #1 and #2 as these occur before Safe Mode, so you just reboot again with Shift key if you need to enter Safe Mode again.
At this point it sounds like your hard drive is dying or some sort of other hardware issue which I can only advise this.
Try to install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, if it's fine then you know your internal boot drive is dying.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can replace your internal drive yourself.
OtherWorld Computing is pretty good about providing drives and tool kits to perform that function yourself.

Lion 10.7 Only Boots in Safe Mode. Is This a Hardware or Software Issue?
Hi. On my iMac late 2009 i7 8GB bought last March only. I reinstalled Lion (I didn't erase the whole disk because I have Boot Camp Windows and I have filed there) and it can only boot in safe mode if I use the Mac's built-in EFI bootloader (where you have to press option on restart) menu then press shift after choosing the iMac OS X hardisk. I've been trying to fix it for around 4 days now today. I'm tempted to take it to the authorized Mac shop but that could take weeks to months in our country. If I let it boot normally, it would seem to have a kernel panic and would stop at the white/gray screen. Verbose mode showed that is stopped at something 10 of these like: nstat fail.
Is this a GPU hardware problem, specifically the 3D element of this 4850M GPU? I'd like to do load each kext, each extension manually but I can't find them in Lion. When I use the Lion DVD or the Lion Recovery partition, it's very sluggish, every click and process takes 20 seconds to minutes. If I try to boot in Linux, Snow Leopard DVD or Snow Leopard external hardisk, there seems to be a kernel panic. It's either just a black screen or a garbled screen.
I want to erase/format the iMac's hardisk but in Safe Mode, it can't be mounted even if I use Disk Utility. If only there's a way to force it to mount, I can save some Windows 7 file to one of my external hardisk or flash drive. Does anyone know of an app or program that can mount NTFS files on Lion's Safe mode?
If it's a Lion bug, has Lion somehow corrupted the Mac's built-in (hardware not the EFI partition in the hardisk) EFI or somehow corrupted the Mac or GPU's ROM? Could it be a new OS X virus? Should I then perform in Safe Mode to flash the GPU ROM and the Mac's ROM again (I have the latest)?
Do you think if I erased the whole drive, reinstalled it again with either Snow Leopard (assuming it doesn't boot into a garbled screen) or Lion things will go back to normal?
Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the culprit (was it a hardware or software issue) and what was the solution?
Gbu.Hi thanks for all the concern and replies. I've tried all that.
I had just got it back from the shop last Friday. It was there for around two weeks. It was a faulty GPU (when you see garbled display that's consisten when booting it the GPU). I have a strong feeling it's related to the Lion install 10.7 or 10.7.1 and may be similar to reports of Mac laptops overheating. It's good the GPU is removable, it might have taken 3 week or a month if it had been the whole board.
It's a blessing in disguise though as with all or most cases because I also got to have the LCD replaced for excessive backlight bleeding (in my opinion), the dead pixel from the previous LCD isn't there anymore (though under the glass there're some smudges but nothing crucial). The backlight bleeding is still the same though in my opinion but at least it's new.
It's a great thing I bought Applecare. I didn't buy it for the iPhone because that's more durable (my iPhone 3G's 3 years old now and it's still solid. Although there are scratches and a crack at the back at the bottom, got sqeezed under the table I think when I sat). I think Applecare is a good recommend for things that get hot like desktop and laptop Macs(are the iOS considered Macs btw?) which are twice or thrice the price of iOS devices.

Have just installed FireFox and it only starts in 'Safe Mode' ???
I was having problems uploading photos to Photobox... 'They' suggested installing FireFox
I haven't yet put a short cut on the tool bar, so when I click 'start' Firefox is highlighted as a new perog, but it states that it will only start in '(Safe Mode)'Those disk permissions results are harmless and are irrelevant here.
All external hardware is disconnected when you try this?
Do you have Xcode installed? -
Booted in Safe Mode now Mail and Safari crash when I try to open them
I have a problem with InDesign. I booted in Safe Mode in an attempt to reset my system cache. Now when I boot normally the InDesign problem persists and Safari and Mail crash every time I try to open them. When I boot in safe mode Mail, Safari, and InDesign all work wonderfully.

You restored already and sometimes just rebooting the iPad helps with what you were experiencing. I don't if it will do any good now, but you might as well give it a try.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If you downloaded the latest version of iTunes, perhaps the download or installation of the software was corrupt. You could try deleting iTunes and reinstall it. What OS are you - Windows or Mac OS X?
I don't think that this will work, but try it anyway... Try downloading another app - any free app will be fine. -
Firefox crashes when opening and will not open in safe mode
Recently FF3 started crashing when opening. It will not open in safe mode as well. I have uninstalled it including deleting the install folder and profile folders as well as registry entries. Upon reinstallation is will still not launch in any mode.
I have scanned for malware with several scanners and that has not found anything.
Here is the crash report cause - nsCOMPtr_base::~nsCOMPtr_base() | nsDocShell::SetupNewViewer(nsIContentViewer*)

My Mac Pro 2.8 crashed and will not reboot in Safe Mode - HELP!
Hello
I have a Mac Pro 2.8 and it froze up on me; I held in the power button to shut it down. Upon restart, all I get is a flashing foldoer file icon with a question mark.
What gives? It will not start in Safe Mode, via the Shift button OR DOS command (sudo nvram boot-args="-x")
1. How do I get it back up? I have a back up on my external hard drive, but it doesn't recognize it?
2. Are all my current files gone?
Thanks for your helpA flashing question mark on boot can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from or the startup disk is failing or failed.
Since you don't have the install discs now, it may take some time to order and receive them from Apple. Probably time to take the Mac to an Apple Store or Apple certified repair shop. They can tell you for certain whether or not the disk has failed.
Since holding down the Option key that prompts the Startup Manager window didn't work, not does your external drive recognized your Mac, I'm afraid without a backup to restore those files from, you may be out of luck.
can I get a new one from mac, and will it erase all my files?
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available. -
First MBP Grey Screen/Boot Problems/Only boots in Safe Mode
Hi everyone,
I've spent the last few days researching previous troubleshoots and threads on the subject, but haven't had much luck unfortunately.
This is a 2011 MBP, 2.2 GHz, 4 gb RAM, 15 inch. As a preface, I use(d) an external monitor via my MBP's mini-display port, and at some points, the monitor (both) would become distorted, vertical lines running down, and then both would freeze, so I immediately thought my GPU was going. Then after a few restarts after the problem occurred a few times, I got the infamous boot issue: the grey screen (after viewing the spinning logo), so to the forums and research it was.
Now, my MBP will boot in safe mode with no issues. Getting it to boot off of a disc with the "C" option works about 50/50, but I usually end up being able to get to it.
This is what I've attempted thus far from everything I've read:
Repaired Disk: repaired
Repaired Permissions: repaired (both of which I did in safe-mode AND from disc-booting, if that helps)
Reset SMC
Reset PRAM
Reinstalled factory RAM (2 x 2 gbs) ((I had a 2 gb stick and an 8 gb stick) Status of RAM via Profiler: OK
Removed peripheral devices to give that a shot with no luck
Reinstalled OS X (Snow Leopard, by the way, from disc)
Performed both abridged AND extended Apple Hardware Test: No problems found (which is what took me away from Logic Board or GPU issues..)
Used Time Machine backups to restore from previous working date (I regularly backed up my MBP) and have two seperate external drives with backups, though no clones.
Reformatted my entire 750 gb HD, last night, reinstalled the OS X, did not try and restore from Time Machine (as I know I could do that at a later date) and following completion of the OS X install and upon the "restart" requested of me, my MBP had a dark blue freeze, so I cold booted to the same problem of the grey screen, which is where I'm at now.
Summary:
Can Safe Boot with no issues. Reformatted drive. Reinstalled OS X (10.6.7, software update to 10.6.8). Operating with original RAM, went through trouble shoot procedures.
From what I've read, a lot of people have said to replace the MBP Hard Drive cable (SATA) cable, which I have ordered per my model, so I'm waiting on that.
Is there anything else I can do, or try in the meantime? I'd like to know peoples' thoughts on if my HD has failed (thought DU says it's fine) and the fact I can boot in safe mode, and whether a hard drive cable replacement is a probable fix.
This MBP was purchased NEW in June of 2011 and has been well maintained.
Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions, critiques,...anything.Hi everyone,

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
Thanksthanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds. -
MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.
So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed. Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance! This is a GPU problem. It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.
