My MBP from December 2007 is beginning to slow down...

how is the best way to resolve this please? i find i must restart more often now so it will run faster and more smooth. i just find if i have skype open, Mail, Chrome (with 5 or 6 pages open) and iChat..it gets slow.. any suggestions how to clean it up or speed it up? thanks

A couple of other things to check:
1) 1) See if any background processes are eating up CPU cycles. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage.
Check after a restart, then also after you have been using the computer for a while. Some processes may not be started until another app is used. If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated.
2) Run the maintenance scripts. These are programmed to run in the wee hours of the morning, but only if the computer is "on" and not sleeping. Not too realistic for many users. You can run the scripts manually whenever you wish. See this "how-to" article:
http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
3) If you are running anti-virus software on a Mac, historically it will do more harm than good.
4) Third-party backup software that's active in the background can slow things. Those will show up in the activity check in my #1.
5) I've found that Safari's Top Sites invokes a process called Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher that is a resource hog. If you use Top Sites but can stand to have better performance without it, post back for instructions.
6) My MBP (Late 2007 2.2G 15" 2G RAM) runs much faster under Snow Leopard that Leopard. You will probably have to move more stuff off your hard drive to install it because of the way the installer works.

  • My MBP from December 2007 is beginning to slow down...some advice please

i thought about restoring the entire hard drive.. is this a complicated procedure.. delete the whole drive and reinstall the OS system? would it speed it up after?

    Hi m,
BGreg offers good suggestions I'd try before nuking the whole HD. If you do decide to go that way, here's a process you could use that is not too complicated, but is time consuming.
Backup. I would clone to an external HD using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper!, and also create a Time Machine backup.
    After that:
    1. Boot from install disc (press power button, immediately insert install disc and hold down c key).
    2. Select your language.
    3. Open Disk Utility from Utilities menu.
    4. Select the HD in the left pane (the manufacturer’s name and the HD model number).
    5. Click on the Erase tab.
    6. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    7. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    8. Click the Partition tab.
    9. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (normally just one unless you have other plans).
    10. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    11. Click Apply.
    12. Quit Disk Utility and continue with the installation process to install OSX; when finished, repair permissions, run updates, repair permissions.
    13. Following this, restore your data: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553 (link also includes backing up using Disk Utility).

  • Is it possible to upgrade Oct 2013 MBP-r SSD how much before it slows down?

    Hi all,
I was just wondering if its possible for Apple to upgrade the SSD in my macbook pro retina oct 2013 model,
I sorely wish that I had gone for the 256GB model really, I purchased applecare, so I don't want to void my warranty - besides, googling around I found out that there are no aftermarket upgrades available for it anyways.
I have set time machine backup to backup manually (is this okay?, I Don't tend to make mistakes of emptying unwanted stuff in the trash, or is it likely ill need to use it for more than this?)
Also, coming from PC's ive always noticed a considerable drop in performance once a drive starts getting alot of data, how much roughly does it take to slow down an SSD, is it the same as a spinny drive? Im still pretty new to OS X, first mac and first SSD and im panicking ive made a serious mistake purchasing such a small drive.
Thanks alot for your patience, I did have a search but im not brilliant at searching lol

Information for offloading data onto medium-speed and fast external disks:
Standard disks on Thunderbolt connectors are a waste of money (limited by the rotating disk speed at ~100 MB/s).  Standard disks on USB 3.0 run just as fast as on Thunderbolt.  You can use an external Seagate 1 TB hybrid SSHD to run at the maximum USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt speeds when accessing the 8 GB SSD cache.
Performance and price summary for Macs with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connections:
Expensive, Internal SSD,  Many 100s of MB/s,  120 to 1 TB GB capacity
    ~$100,  Standard disks on USB 3.0,  ~100 MB/s,  1 to 3 TB capacity
(Avoid 4 TB disks.  They are not as reliable.)
~$200 and up,  Standard disks on Thunderbolt,  ~100 MB/s,  1 to 3 TB capacity
    (A waste of money.)
    ~$130,  Hybrid SSHD on USB 3.0,  ~100 to 200 MB/s,  1 TB capacity
    ($110 SSHD + $20 USB 3.0 enclosure)

  • Computer beginning to slow down, seeing the little rainbow curser more and

    Hi,
I'm seeing that little rainbow curser more and more and the computer is slowing down when shifting between programs where it didn't before. For example, when I jump from Excel to Safari there's a lag where there never used to be. I have plenty of memory both internally and externally. What can I do? I've already ran the Disk Utility.
    Thanks,

A note of caution there... the Desktop is not an infinite storage bin. If you keep a lot of files especially music, video you can "choke" the Desktop and recovery is no fun. I keep all my files in the Documents folder but since that folder gets used by applications also I create a folder within Documents called,"MyStuff" and that is where all my files reside.

  • Move from Tiger to Snow Leopard Has Slowed Down MBP Fall '08

I had to upgrade to snow leopard recently to use new releases of some software I use (like MacSpeech Dictate). Since upgrading, the speed of my mac has slowed significantly. Expose used to happen immediately. Now, it takes 4-7 seconds. When I switch from one program that's already open to another program that's already open, it often takes 10-20 seconds to switch. Etc. I've been a mac guy since before the mac (used the Lisa) and I've never been this unimpressed with an "upgrade."
Is there something I can do to get back to a mac that works when I want it to work?

Sounds like you have some software which hasn't been tested with 10.6. See my upgrade FAQ* for resources to find out if this has happened:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Downgrading is much harder, though is outlined in this tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=6183892
Note, for a MacBook Pro that shipped with less than 10.5, you must use the original MacBook Pro installer discs, or a clone backup to restore your system to 10.4.11 or earlier.

  • Hard drive upgrade for Mac Book Pro from 11/2007 with 120GB

    Hello
My hard drive is full after 2 years. I contacted an apple reseller as Apple store would not advise on it, and they told me that to avoid overheating, I should not exceed 160 GB for a new hard drive. I was surprised as a 250 GB hard rive was optional when I bought my MBP. I was more looking at 500 GB but I am worried about overheating as my laptop tends to heat up a lot with the current drive already.
How big a hard drive can my MBP accommodate (I understand 500 GB)? Will it create more heat which can not be dissipated by the MBP as Apple reseller told? Does 5400 or 7200 rpm change the heat levels (I understand not necessarily)?
Thanks for your answers, may help me avoid buying a new laptop.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have the 17" MBP from September 2007, and I ordered mine with the optional 250 GB drive, which is a Fujitsu 4200 RPM model. My Mac runs perfectly well on this drive, and it never gets hot.
Since so many people have successfully put 500 GB drives in their Macs, I think the Apple reseller is misinformed. There may be a decrease in battery life for the 7200 RPM models, but I have read many posts where people report that the drives work perfectly well and that there was no heat problem.
I replaced the 30 GB drive in my iBook with a Western Digital 120 GB drive, and have had no issues with it. The drive does make a slightly different and louder whirring noise if you listen carefully. My only regret is that I did not install a 250 GB drive instead of the 120 GB.
Western Digital and Seagate both make 500 GB drives that should work perfectly well in your machine. Some people have reported problems with the 640 GB Western Digital spinning up and down too much, so you may want to avoid that one. If you go with the 500 GB Seagate, be sure to select one without the G-Force feature, as it is a built in type of sudden motion sensor which can conflict with Apple's built in Sudden Motion Sensor.
    Good luck!

  • I am having an issue waking my late 2007 MBP from hibernation after update to 10.8

I am having an issue waking my late 2007 MBP from hibernation after I updated to OSX 10.8 Mountain lion. Anything I can do to fix this? I cannot keep doing a hard reset.

for people with this problem in the future. I ended up solving this by taking out and reinserting the RAM. I had previously bought RAM from crucial.com and I thought it may have been a compatibility issue with that. After taking out the RAM and reinserting I have not had the problem. Be sure to insert the RAM with force, almost to the point it hurts. I think the problem for the MAC not waking from sleep was due to the RAM not properly inserted or being jarred out over time and not related to the instal of 10.8. also, if you are no longer under applecare and you call apple with an issue you get retards.
    cool. thanks. <3

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

  • ActiveSync stops working after migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

We have started the migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. We've followed best practices and everything is working great except ActiveSync. I've performed Exchange migrations in the past so this is nothing new for me. I've also been referring to
a great guide which has been a big help,
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/migration-deployment/planning-and-migrating-small-organization-exchange-2007-2013-part1.html.
Once a user is migrated from Exchange 2007 to 2013, ActiveSync stops working properly. Email can be pulled to the device (Nokia Lumia 625 running Windows Phone 8) by performing a manual sync. But DirectPush is not working. The strange part is it's not affecting
everyone who's been migrated. Anyone who is still on Exchange 2007 is not affected.
At first I thought it was our wildcard certificate. 99% of our users are running Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 or higher but we do have a few terminal servers still running Outlook 2010. Outlook 2010 was giving us certificate errors. I realized it was the wildcard
certificate. Rather than making changes to the OutlookProvider I simply obtained a new SAN certificate. Although that resolved the issues for Outlook 2010 users, ActiveSync was still a problem.
Rebooting the phones and removing the email account from the user's device and re-adding it didn't resolve the issue either.
Then I performed an iisreset on the CAS server. This didn't help either. I didn't know it at the time, but I was getting closer...
I tried using the cmdlet Test-ActiveSyncConnectivity but it gave me the following error:
WARNING: Test user 'extest_0d9a45b025374' isn't accessible, so this cmdlet won't be able to test Client Access server
    connectivity.
Could not find or sign in with user DOMAIN.com\extest_0d9a45b025374. If this task is being run without
credentials, sign in as a Domain Administrator, and then run Scripts\new-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1 to verify that
the user exists on Mailbox server EX02.DOMAIN.COM
I started reviewing how Exchange 2013 proxied information from the CAS to the mailbox server and realized the issue may in fact be on the mailbox server.
I performed an iisreset on the mailbox server and all of a sudden ActiveSync started working again. Awesome!
I can't explain why. The only thing I can assume is when some users were migrated from 2007 to 2013 something wasn't being triggered on the Exchange 2013 side. Resetting IIS resolved the issue. I guess I'll have to do an IIS reset after I perform a batch
of migrations. Disabling ActiveSync and re-enabling it for the affected users didn't help - only the IISRESET resolved the issue.
If anyone has any information as to why this happens, please chime in. Also, if anyone knows why I can't run the Test-ActiveSyncConnectivity cmdlet, I'd appreciate the help.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
In Exchange 2013, the Public Folder is changed to Public Folder mailbox instead of Public Folder in Exchange 2007 database.
Due to the changes in how public folders are stored, legacy Exchange mailboxes are unable to access the public folder hierarchy on Exchange 2013 servers. However, user mailboxes on Exchange 2013 servers or Exchange Online can connect to legacy
public folders. Exchange 2013 public folders and legacy public folders can’t exist in your Exchange organization simultaneously. This effectively means that
    there’s no coexistence between versions.
For this reason, it’s recommended that prior to migrating your public folders, you should
first migrate your all legacy mailboxes to Exchange 2013. For more information about migrating public folder from previous versions, please refer to:

  • Migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 Public Folders coexistence

    Hi all, I'm migrating from Exchange 2007 SP3 to Exchange 2013 SP1.

Appreciate if someone can help us move forward in this scenario.
    We have
    1. disabled anti virus and tried.
    2. removed watermarks and action entries in the registry
    3. tried almost everything mentioned on google but i am not able to move forward.
Please help. we need this as part of our migration to Exchange 2013 for co-existence.
    Thank you.

  • Can I use a SATA cable from a 2007 MacBook Pro for an SSD in a 2011 MacBook Pro?

Trying to replace the optical drive on my MacBook Pro with an SSD. The only SATA cable I have is from a 2007 model. Will that work? Also, I can't find a good sled for the drive... Will literally taping it in place suffice until I find such a sled?

An 85 watt charger will be fine. Generally, you can use a higher-powered charger than the one that came with your MBP - but using a lower-powered charger is not recommended.
