My MBP i7 will not boot. What gives?

Out of nowhere my MBP just stopped being able to boot. I shut it down properly (nothing unusual) and when I got back home I attempted to start it. It hung on the grey startup screen (grey w/ apple and loading bar) once it slowly loaded to about 10% of the bar. It took maybe a minute in total.. Then it just turned off.
I tried rebooting w & wo power connected, reset the pram, then tried to boot to the hardware disk. I got to a blue screen w/ a "hit 'T" or "click test" to start test. Started test. Got to about 10% again... And nothing... For five minutes.
I've had no issues until now. What else can I do?

I should have clarified... Does anyone have useful information on things I can do?

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Solaris 10 will not boot from DVD on my system

I first installed Solaris 10 on my system and it worked fine. Then when it went to boot the OS it just kept rebooting. I must have made a midtake in the install so went to install it again.
Problem is that now the DVD will not boot and give me the option to install Solaris like it did before. It instead goes straight into GRUB. I thought that this was because of the previous install on the hardrive. But then I disconnected my harddrives and still the same problem.
I tried the disk on another system and the disk booted with the option to install Solaris. So the question is why does the disc boot into GRUB even when there is no hard drives attached to my machine

as was mentioned, let's see /etc/vfstabHere it is:
#device to mount     #device to fsck     mount point     FS type     fsck pass    mount at boot       mount options

/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0     /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0     /data     ufs     1     yes     -Sorry for the formatting, I had to type it out since I can't get any files directly off of the server.
The last entry in the vfstab file is the only entry I added myself. It is a secondary hard disk that I mounted to the directory /data. Everything else was automatically created at install according to the partitions that I defined.
I really need to get this server up and running as fast as possible. I want to avoid re-installing everything since that would be really time consuming. Thanks in advance.

  • Please help! MBP 15" 2011 will not boot at all

    Hi,
My 15 inch early (May) mbp 2011 will not start up. Here is what I have observed so far:
    1) When power button is pushed (without MagSafe attached) hard drive will spin up and about after 3-5 seconds it will turn off (hard drive spins Down, no further boot process) No chime, no led indicator light in front.
    2) When power button is pushed (with MagSafe attached) hard drive spins up, keeps spinning, but no further boot process. Just black screen and spinning hard drive.
    3) When attempting SMC reset, fans turn to high, and screen remains black, still no boot)
    4) Since mbp fails before booting, PRAM/NRAM resetting is not a possibility. (Tried)
    5) I have also removed the battery cable from the logic board, and tried resetting without any luck.
    6) I entered CD into optical drive - it "ate" it, but will not eject now. (Tried holding eject/left mouse/control e etc) still nothing.
    7) After letting mbp rest for 1 day, it booted fine like nothing happend, worked fine for 1 day, then next morning back to square one. Now 5 days later still nothing.
If anybody has any ideas what could be wrong, or have possible solutions, please don't hesitate.
    Thanks in advance, Oliver

    Hey there Oliverkehn,
It sounds like your computer is not booting up at all at this point, even after some very thorough troubleshooting you've already done. From the following article, I would use these steps that I don't mention as having been tried just yet:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1367
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

    Hi JACOBfromINSIDEaLION,
If you are unable to get your iPhone to restore, you will want to perform a restore from recovery mode, as explained in the following article:

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

  • MBP will not boot up with USB devices connected

I have a late 2010 MBP 15 10.7.2 that will no longer boot up if any USB devices are attached. A dongle, a hub, anything. It goes to the gray screen and stays there. Disconnecting all USB devices the MBP will boot up. Then connecting the USB devices they work. It just will not boot up with anything connected to the USB ports. I have reset PRAM, SMC and fixed disk permissions. Made sure login items are ok, and start up disk is correct. I cant really say when the problem started as it worked fine before, maybe on 10.7.1? Not sure.
    Any suggestions for a fix?

I re-installed the 10.7.2 combo. It booted up with a non powered usb 4 port hub but it disabled it. Plugging it out then in again and it works. Looks like the USB firmware has changed somehow in 10.7.2, The hub works on PC's at work no problem, and it worked on the MBP without issue previously. Its not just the non powered hub its a powered hub, and other devices.
    Any solutions?

I purchased a free app from App Store for my iPhone 5s, iOS version 7.1.2. It will not download; just gives me the little cloud with arrow pointing down. What do I need to do to get the app to load?

    Hello mjhardy,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error while downloading apps. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

  • Late 2011 17" MBP - Will not boot, eject, or read disk

    Hi guys,
My late 2011 17" MBP after having a server error on Mac Recovery, freezing, and being force shut off, now will not boot.
When you power it up, it chimes then goes to a blue screen, indefinitely.
It also will not eject the DVD in it's drive.
I've tried every key combination prior to startup or during startup to try and remedy this, and nothing.
It always boots with a chime then blue screen.
    Please help. :3

    Ejecting the disk:
    Try these various remedies: http://guides.macrumors.com/Force_Eject_a_Stuck_CD_or_DVD
Since your Mac came with Lion installed it may have a recovery partition on the boot disk.
There are two ways boot from the Recovery Partition:
    - Hold down the Command-R as you boot.
This will attempt to boot from the Recovery Partition
and if that fails it will try to boot using Network Recovery (a slow process).
    - If it won’t boot using Command-R then hold down the Option key as you boot.
              Select the Recovery Partition.
Backup:  Do you have a recent backup?  If not I suggest you create one before proceeding.  You might not need it but it is especially important to have a backup whenever your Mac is sick.  Post back for instructions for an emergency backup, if needed.
    Blue Screen:
From the Recovery Partition you should be able to repair the disk and reïnstall OS X (without erasing you existing data).

  • I have reset my ipad using General Reset Erase All Content and Settings. And now it will not boot. All i see on screen is the Apple logo. What do i do?

I have reset my ipad using General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. And now it will not boot. All i see on screen is the Apple logo. What do i do?

When you restore, you can restore to factory settings or to a backup. Restoring to factory settings removes everything and takes you back to out of the box status and you start all over again. Restoring from your backup will replace all of your app data, bookmarks, email settings and things like that. You still may need to sync all of your purchased apps and music, photos and so on back to the iPad.
I assume you want to restore from your backup to put all of you data back on the device so connect the iPad to your computer, launch iTunes, right click on the device name on the left side under the devices heading and select restore from backup. After you restore from your backup, make sure that you sync all of your other content with iTunes.

Disk utility will not boot using COMMAND   R. It won't give me the 'ERASE' option when I open Disk Utility. How do I wipe my hard drive?

If you're truly running 10.6.8, there is no Recovery partition - that didn't come along until 10.7x.
You'll need to use the set of gray discs that originally shipped with your model. If you don't have them, you can always get your serial number from the bottom of the casing and call Apple to get a set of replacement discs. These will run you about $20 + shipping & taxes. Once you have the discs, boot from Disk One and use Disk Utility to erase your HD and then reinstall whichever version of OS X that shipped with your model. No way around of getting the discs.

  • 2007 MBP will not boot, chimes no apple logo, makes noise under right side

My laptop froze today so I restarted it and now it will not boot up. From reading, it may be the logic board or ram. Has anyone had this happen? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

well of course I'm going to do that, but since they couldn't figure it out the first time I figured it may be helpful if I could ask here first and if somebody else has had this same problem and knows what's going on it would be easier for them to find the real problem, because I don't think the logic board is the problem, or at least it isn't the only problem.
