My MBP is stuck in Guest User mode and the taskbar is unresponsive. None of the keyboard shortcuts are working either. What do I do?

After an automatic update last night that updated my recent Lion to 10.7.2 w iCloud a new guest user account appeared at the login screen. The login screen wasn't responding so I clicked on both user accounts. As luck would have it the guest account logged in and now Im stuck there at the safari window that won't load. It's just stuck at a guest login information screen. It isn't even connecting to the internet. The mouse moves but it won't click on anything. And despite restarting the comp a few times it opens up back at the same screen. I think that's Lions built in autorecovery mechanism that won't let it go back to the beginning. I've already tried rebooting holding command-r. that isnt working either.
Any suggestions?

i have a dvd stuck in my superdrive, so in an attempt to get it out, I tried clicking on the guest account listed at startup. now i have an additional problem, i can't logout of the guest account.  i can only get access to my profile by safe booting (holding shift on booting).  if i boot normally, it automatically goes back into the guest account, which has no accessibility.  i can't even use the "shut down" or "restart" options.
HELP!

    Thanks anyway for your help.
But allow me to extend to you a simple reflexion about the jailbreak (even if my iPhone wasn't... except if my little cousin jailbreaked without me noticing the advantages or disadvantages) : Would you refuse an alcoholic trying to go to rehab ? Would you really let someone trying to restore a cellular phone die without it, because he went on the bad side a couple of years ?
Not a great analogy, but this is a user-to-user forum, and Apple will not allow discussion of jailbreaking; if someone tried to help with jailbreaking the message would be deleted. However, if you have a jailbroken phone Apple will generally not block a discussion of how to unjailbreak it. The only problem is that not all jailbroken phones can be restored successfully; it depends on the method of jailbreaking (which I can't discuss without THIS message being deleted).

  • Stuck in single user mode and can not get past it

I am experiencing a problem I recently had lent me a Mac g4 tower. I decided to upgrade to tiger and accidentally set the start-up preference to the disc, every time I boot up it goes into single user mode, if I boot up holding the option key it brings up 3 icons on the right is an arrow in a circle formation which is refresh at a guess in the middle is the hard drive which is depressed kind of thing and on the right is a straight arrow. I have tried selecting each of these individually and even pressing enter all but the refresh icon goes back into single user mode. When the disc is in and I go to this it does not ring up the disc as an option.
I have zapped the PRAM reset the CUDA button and even telling it to reset the NRAM etc.
I have tried it with the disk in and out and all paths lead to the same outcome it starts up I hear the tone and the screen goes grey with an apple icon on then it goes to lack screen saying localhost:/root#.
I have also used the (fsck –fy) in single user mode to scan the disk and it says it appears to be ok. I have done all these steps multiple times but I am still getting the same outcome.
I have also tried pulling the logic battery and pressing the cuda switch and leaving it to stand and even pulling the RAM but this has not worked and I am still getting the same out come of been put straight in to single user mode.
I have tried starting up in safe mode but again this just goes to single user mode as well.
As yet I have not tried booting up using this machine as a slave drive or using another Mac as a slave drive and seeing what this out come does as I have not got access to another Mac at this time.
Unfortunately I do not have the original discs that came with the machine either so can not even boot from them.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Please read my post properly thanks.
I have tried several key commands such has D, C and even holding (option, command, shift and delete) when i do this it just brings up a folder with two changing flashing icons.

Ok checked them out and followed the instructions given, but still getting the same outcome, looked at the system log and it tells me.
localhost login: PAM pam_inithandlers:no default config /etc/pam.d/other
localhost login:PAM error reading PAM configuration file
localhost login:PAM pam_start:failed to initialize handlers
    localhost shutdown: halt by andy
    Any more ideas???

  • Stuck in disc mode and the restore won't work because of error 1437

I've been stuck in disc mode for over two hours after trying to reset my iPod. I originally had to restore it because it says that there are corrupt files. It went ok until the very end when it said that it couldn't be restored because of error 1437. So, I tried to reset it. Now, it's been in disc mode and nothing is working! I tried to format it from my computer, I tried to restore it multiple times, I tried resetting it again, I uninstalled and installed itunes, I even went as far as downloading the most recent itunes It's just stuck in the same mode and won't let me do anyhting! Also, the nearest Apple store is a 2 hour drive away and I don't have the money for Apple support.Oh, and the ipod is completely empty and it says I have 0 KB available. (Out of a 160 GB iPod Classic)

    Hi JLeeAnne1993,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you are receiving an alert after attempting a restore. You have done several great troubleshooting steps already I see. The other steps I would recommend would be isolating the usb port, reregistering “.dll” files, updating or reinstalling the Windows USB drivers, and possible disabling your security software temporarily. I know the specific alert number you are receiving is not listed, but please use the following article for the steps and information on how to complete these actions.
    iPod: Can't restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439

I held the power button until it went off. When I tried to reboot it got stuck on the blue screen with the apple logo and the spinning (loading) circle, it never get to the log in screen. After hours it just becomes a blue screen. After reading forums I tried rebooting in single user mode and I haven't been able to complete the process because i can't enter commands. Here's what the bottom part said i can give the rest if needed:

    +Debugger called: <panic>+
    +Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)+

Sooooo I don't know what to do....Please help
I don't have apple care and the nearest apple store is 3 hrs away and I cant get there til monday, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks soo much
    Jade:)

What you've gotten is a kernel panic. There are a few things that can cause this.
The first thing to do is get your hands on the disks and follow my last set of instructions for verifying and repairing your hard disk.
While you wait for them, however, there are a few more things to try:
    1) Hold down the commandoption+pr keys while you turn the computer on. Continue holding them until the Mac restarts a second time. This will reset your NVRAM.
    2) Reseat the RAM modules inside the MacBook. Poorly-seated RAM modules are one of the leading causes of kernel panics at startup. To do this, follow these instructions:

  • Macbook won't boot after Airport update, stuck in single user mode

Wasn't sure what forum to put this in, so I'll start here. After re-imaging student machines from the server, for some reason the new Macbooks no longer recognize they have an airport card. On another machine I download the appropriate Airport software, copy to thumbdrive, and install on student laptop. After required reboot, the Macbook refuses to boot into OS X- I get the grey apple logo, spinning gear, then drops to what appears to be single user mode, with the exception that it seems to be "refreshing" itself constantly with messages appearing for brief moments (too fast to read). It cycles so fast that I can't type anything before it is gone again. If I purposely boot into single user mode, everything behaves as normal, if I mount as fire-wire drive, everything looks good. But I can't get into OS X. Before I brick more student machines, have any ideas?

Some added info, i CAN boot the bricked machine into Safe mode, but at reboot I get stuck in the same cycle again.
Oh, and in SafeBoot, the Macbook still tells me that no Airport card is installed, even though I know it does (and it's not knocked loose or anything).....

  • MBP only runs if I start in single user mode and run fsck. WHY!

I am having trouble with my MBP. If I don't start in single user mode and run fsck -fy twice, I can't click on anything with my trackpad. I can't even log in. I've tried resetting pram/nvram, disk permission repair too but once i reboot... nada. I can't do anything in recovery mode, I can move around with arrows and tab but can't select anything. Safe mode hangs at about 20% and doesn't budge (left it for an hour, nothing). If I run fsck -fy it works but as soon as I reboot/ logout i'm back to square one again. Anyone know what causes this to happen? It just started tonight. I have a 2012 15" with Mountain Lion.

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My new laptop is stuck on guest user

My new mac book pro is stuck on guest user how do I get out of that?

Restart the system and log in to your normal Admin user account.

  • Why can I not disable the guest user in the 10.8.2 update? I have never enabled the guest user, but after the update, it was automatically enabled with a "managed" tag. It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options.

It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options. I was able to select the account under "parental controls", but again, could not delete it. Why Apple? Why?!!????

SOLVED Ok. I actually was able to disable it. I had to actually log in as the guest user to make it accessible in the preference window. Then I disabled it and logged out. Apologies if this was obvious for some people, but I have had some sort of issue with something every update since Snow Leopard.

  • Just tried to update my iPad 2 to the current iOS, and I got an error that said the update wouldn't install. The iPad is stuck in a funny mode with the apple and spinning wheel showing. I can't power it down or restart it. What next? Thanks.

Try a hard reset: hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

I rewrote code for debugging purpose and tried to catch error using GetLastError();  method,

New to the Apple and I want to set up a user account that will not delete the guest users files and allow and preserve their personal settings after log out. Is this possible?

The built-in guest user account will not do this. Simply create a new standard account and call it "Guest" or "Guest Users" or whatever you like.
Go to System Preferences > Users& Groups, click "+" to make a new account.
