My MBP really hot and really slow recently

Hi,
My MBP has become really hot and noticably slower recently (within the last 4-5 months). Before I could keep it on my lap for hours watching video using VLC and run a bunch of other applications (like Safari, Firefox, iTERM, Nisus Writer Pro, TextMate, etc.) without it getting unbearable.
Now, even when it's nearly idle (running just Safari, with Quicksilver in the background) the temperature is around 130 deg. Fahrenheit, give or take 10 degrees. And the usually silent fans continuously give out an evil hiss.
The only changes I made to the MBP within that time are:
1. Upgraded to 10.5.6
2. Added growl (which I turned off for now)
3. Purchased some software via MacHeist, which includes:
acorn,
appshelf
boinxTV
CroMag Ralley
Espresso
iSale
Kinemac
littlesnapper
picturesque
SousChef
Hitlist
Times
Wire Tap Studio
World of Goo, and
eventbox
4. Upgraded to Safari 4 beta
And that's about it. Safari seems very sluggish on the initial launch, giving me the spinning ball, and more often than not, it would freeze and I would have to force quit. But then again, the previous version crashed quite often too, but I seem to remember it to be pretty perky on launch.
The only things I run in the background and/or login items are:
1. Font Agent's font activator
2. Quicksilver
3. iTunes Helper
4. Stuffit's MagicMenu
5. MenuCalendarClock iCal version
6. Expandrive
7. Little Snitch
8. MacFuse
Also my wireless connection to the USB drive on my AEBS seem to have slowed a lot too. At one point, I was reading and writing to it at almost the same speed as if it were plugged directly into my MBP's USB port. Now, it's around regular ethernet speed (not fast ethernet, nor gigabit, just regular 11Mbps).
Anyone have any idea? I'm thinking of just reinstalling from the 10.5.2 DVD I have, but that means I have to backup everything and I know I'll lose something during the process, because I have a WD 320GB disk and have used it all up except for about 10GB. It's gonna take a good part of a day (or two) to do the complete reinstall.
Any help as to why my MBP's so sluggish and hot would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
S

Yes, you need more free space on your HDD, for sure. But...
Let's back up a minute. I just re-read your original post - 130 °F is NOT hot. That's barely warm. Most of us are used to looking at temps in Celsius (at least, I am). 130 °F = ~55 °C. My CPU is at 49 °C right now, 5 minutes after waking the machine up from an overnight sleep in a cool downstairs office. Normal MBP idling temps are in the mid 50s °C (the 130s °F), so you are most definitely not having a temperature issue. Running a heavy CPU load will push the temps into the 70-80 °C range (160-175 °F); fans normally don't spin up past idle speed until the CPU/GPU temps are in the 70s °C (your idle speed is 2000 rpm).
So, if the fans are making an 'evil hiss' that's not due to temperature.
To conclude - your initial issues were 1) really hot, 2) noticeably slower and 3) an evil hiss from the fans. So, #1 is a non-issue, since your temps are quite normal. #2 is most likely due to lack of HDD free space (you've run out of room for virtual memory and swap files). That leaves #3 - just how evil is that hiss? What fan speeds does your monitoring software (iStat Pro, for example) report?
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? (Insert Install DVD 1 and reboot with the d key pressed.) That will check out your fans, sensors, etc.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • My I phone charger is really hot, and can make high pitch noises is this normal?

My iphone is getting really hot and it is starting to worry me is it meant to do that?

    No, not normal at all.
Do you have another charger you can try?
If not, I would recommend you make an appointment at an Apple store and bring your phone & its charger in to be examined and to determine if they need to be replaced.

MY IPHONE 3GS START TO GET REALLY HOT, AND AFTER THAT ALMOST EXPLODE...ITS BROKEN NOW.... THE BATTERY GETS FAT... WHATS THE SOLUTION NOW???

Unfortunately it looks like your 3GS' battery has expanded so much that it cracked the whole case wide open. If you have AppleCare on your device then you're all set, just take it to your local Apple Store.
If not, then still take it to the store. Complain about the battery bursting, and make sure to tell them that it's for sure a defect (you'd think it's obvious, but sometimes you just need to drive the point in), and that it potentially could have been and still be a hazard.
Remind them that the phone has not been in any adverse conditions, extreme temperatures, or abused in any way but that you just merely used it normally. (I'm assuming that's the truth?)
If they're good about it they should replace the broken phone for you; but unfortunately there's little chance of repairing your current device.

  • HT1688 I am having issues get my email in one of my mail accounts so I tried to "DELETE" the whole account.  But my phone will not delete a mail account.  And the phone is getting really hot and battery was full 2 hours ago and now at 25%.

Well, you don't say what happens when you try to delete the account. So I don't know what else to recommend. However, if your phone is not charging, is that the mains charger or the computer USB? Also, if it not showing any change to battery percentage, then something is wrong with the software. The next step in user troubleshooting after the reset is a restore from backup. However, considering the condition of the phone right now, I would be more than willing to say your backup is going to be corrupt. But you can try. If that does not fix the device, then you restore as new, not from a backup. If the phone works, then you can try restoring the backup again, but if it messes up, you are going to have to restore as new again. If the restore as new does not work, then you need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar or Authorized Apple Service Provider to get the hardware checked.

  • My macbook gets really hot and has other problems

    Hi,
I bought the new MacBook Air 13inch two months ago towards the end of February, and there are serious problems with my mac.
First of all, I haven't dropped, spilled water, or did anything wrong to my MacBook Air. There aren't even any scratches.
But whenever I use it, the space above the keyboard and a little of the back of the macbook gets really really hot, to the point where it burns my fingers when I touch it. I always use my macbook on a flat surface, and never use it on my bed or anything.
Also, today the fan or ventilation got really noisy, from the top and bottom. The whole macbook was vibrating because of the fan noise.
And sometimes, my macbook air will stop playing sound. For example, when I'm watching a video or playing music, the sound will suddenly stop and will never come back on until I restart my macbook.
Even now as I'm typing this, the macbook is really hot and I'm very worried it might suddenly break.
I thought of getting it fixed, but the thing is:
I have bought this macbook in another country, and right now I am not living in that country (I moved to a different country). Will I be able to get my macbook fixed here?
If not, what can I do to make this all stop? Or what is it that I'm doing wrong that keeps making all this happen? (I watch movies and tv shows a lot, but everyone else that I know of do too, so...)
    Please help ASAP!!

Yes. Apple warranty coverage is international.
    Try resetting SMC.

  • Macbook Pro getting really hot and loud under stress.

To put it simply, i use my macbook pro for game development. Some of the programs/games i run on it are high quality and make my macbook pro (with a 750M installed) incredibly hot. Judging from the app (iStat) the average RPM's of the fans are around 2000rpm. When i have to render something, the macbook starts to get really really hot, and the fans start getting really loud. I checked the fans RPM and it shows that they are going at 6000rpm.
The average temperature when not doing things of the CPU and other components is around 35-50 degrees celcius. When i'm working and it has to render something, and i have to play/test my creation the temperatures go up to around 90 degrees celcius.
Is this safe? I don't want the inside of my brand new laptop to melt under the stress. Keep in mind, i bought one of these because it was suggested that mac's are the better option for graphics and design rather than PC.
If you look at the picture and see that my OS is not Yosemite, that is because i've seen many bad reviews that it can cause overheating. I'm trying to prevent that as much as possible with the workload i have to work with.
    Thanks for any help possible.
    My Specs = http://i.imgur.com/fIGlzcZ.png

I just got mine a week or two ago and I also have noticed how loud and hot mine gets. Mine also has the GT 750. The heat is normal enough but how loud it gets is very annoying.
I think I know why its so loud but cant say for sure. I think its one of those fans on the gpu with side fins rather than a normal fan. Ive had graphics cards before with those fans and they are louder than the normal fans when under load. Now I go for a card that has a couple of larger "normal fans" to keep it cool. Also these side fin fans would be better for a laptop as they will shoot the hot air directly out the back.
Im still not sure why the fan spins so fast when playing a simple game. Its understandable with a more demanding game.
Hopefully you know what I mean though im not explaining it that well.

  • IPhone 5 getting really hot and battery charge not lasting very long at all??

iPhone 5 getting really hot and battery charge not lasting very long at all??

Try some of these to save battery time:
Settings>Notifications>[Turn off any notifications you don't need]
Settings>General>Software Update (Make sure you're up to date)
Settings>Brightness & Wallpaper> Auto-Brightness on (And that your brightness is not to the max)
    Settings>Privacy>Location Services>Turn off/Stop apps from using it
    Settings>Bluetooth>Off
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Fetch New Data>Manually
Settings>Wi-Fi> Off (When you don't need internet when you're out and about)
    To stop overheating, note these:
    Operating Temperatures: 0° to 35° C (32° to 95° F)
    Non-Operating Temperatures: -20° to 45° C (-4° to 113° F)
    Hope this helps!

  • Equium A100 getting hot and running slow

    Hi
Please excuse me I'm new but i have a Toshiba A100 and lately its been getting really hot and begins to run slow.
I was wondering if anyone could help me fix this?
Also when i look through the bottom i noticed that the small fan is not spinning.
    thanks

    Hi
Usually, if the notebook was registered on the Toshiba website then the warranty should be valid two years long.
You ask if the fan replacement is difficult.
So I have to say; YES.
    Why?
Well, as far as I know you have to disassemble the whole notebook the get the access to the cooling modules
In such case all parts must be removed in the right order and this is not easy and really tricky without any manuals and further notebook experience
I think you should contact the ASP in your country for an notebook check.
This would be the best for your machine
    Regards

No. You probably should have backed it up while it was working during those 6 days...

Yo can try the following but I suspect a hardware problem. Maybe bad battery or something else.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

  • Magsafe brick really hot and making a werid noise.

My magsafe brick is really hot, like I can't hold it for more than 10 seconds hot. And its making this werid noise, its sounds kind of like radio static, its kinda squeeky, very annoying. I always had it on the ground but I just got back from a trip and it was on my desk next to my macbook. Help?

Eric's right, these adapters do get a bit hot and can make some sound, yet that sounds much too hot for safety. An AppleCare man told me last month that they were concerned to "capture" adapters that were getting too hot, and promptly sent me a new one in a box in which I was to put the problem adapter and return to them (all paid by Apple of course.)
My concern then was mostly with the strange sounds it was making, seeming to exactly mirror the CPU whine and activity sounds from my Macbook. Since the new one also did this, when I mentioned this at an Apple Store I was visiting the Genius offered to give me another new replacement. This one seemed silent at first, though on closer inspection in the quiet of home I found the mirroring effect was still present in the third adaptor, though a bit softer. As it happened I've ended up with a replacement Macbook because of another issue, making it four adaptors in my experience. All of them have gotten warm, and a bit hot sometimes, and all have produced the same subtle sounds of the CPU activity. I believe these sound effects result somehow as a result of the magnetic power cord connection, which sits very near the CPU. Unfortunately both my Macbooks have had the CPU whine (a high-pitched buzz) and this then gets reproduced by the adaptors.
So, I'd also recommend you call Apple or take it to an Apple Store for a replacement adaptor, which should not get as hot as you describe, but may indeed make some strange-seeming sounds.
    Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro 17 (early 2009) gets really hot and MagSafe Charger.

My Macbook Pro 17 (early 2009) just recently started getting VERY hot after about 15 minutes of normal use. Even hotter faster with fan blowing like crazy when using programs such as quicktime (recording). According to my Mac HD, I have 168 GB available out of 285 GB capacity. The laptop gets very hot especially in the top left corner area around where the charger plugs in. And yes it is on flat surface. Any ideas on why this is doing this?
On top of the laptop getting hot, the original charger that came with it doesnt charge all the time. The white box where the AC plug is gets very hot as well. I bought a new MagSafe charger (the new "L" type) literally a year ago and the box on this one also gets VERY hot and the connector with LED light (part that connects to laptop) get EXTREMELY hot. Any help would be appreciated. My apple care is up and I think its rediculous to have to pay for any type of support now. Thanks.
