If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • MacBook screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep - 10.6.2

We have a MacBook Alum running 10.6.2 with 4gb ram.
We recently upgraded to 10.6.2 from Leopard and this issue started to happen.
It seems that as the MacBook goes to sleep or goes to the screensaver mode, the screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep or screensaver mode without a hard reboot.
Is Apple aware of this issue? It did not happen with the previous version of Leopard. This issue arrived when we upgraded to Snow Leopard. Other than the sleep issue, SL is rock solid. Kudos to Apple for producing a great OS!

    Hi GrooveDaddy,
Have you contacted AppleCare via telephone to make them aware of this issue? It definitely doesn't sound like normal behavior. What sort of troubleshooting have you done so far on the issue? What sort of settings do you have on your screen saver? Password protected? Custom iPhoto slideshow?
What if you manually sleep the machine by closing the lid or engaging it via software (via the Apple menu) does the screen have the issue in both scenarios?

  • STSNavigate() still prompting for credentials when trying to open a document

Here is my scenario. We have setup a public facing site the utilizes a Web Application that searches a internal SharePoint 2010 site. The web app utilizes the SharePoint QueryService to search the site. We provide credentials to the service as the SharePoint
site is not an anonymous site (although if the QueryService worked with the site being anonymous that would satisfy our requirements). The Web server allows anonymous access to the web app through IIS. I have found that utilizing the STSNavigate() function
SUPPOSED to allow the document to be downloaded or opened without prompting for credentials. I modified my search results link to include the function on click and low and behold it still prompts for credentials the same way it would if the url just had the
link to the file. I am on a time clock here and I am running to the end of my rope. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that STSNavigate() still prompt for credentials when trying to open a document.
Per my knowledge, if you try to open an Office file directly from a remote place, Office wants to know who the hell you are. If the server responses with the
Microsoft Office Protocol Discovery or a
    FrontPage Protocol or a
    WebDav Protocol
Then  it ask you for  credentials.
    As a workaround, I recommend to  “init.js” located in \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033 folder.
You need to add this it:
    STSNavigate(ctx.HttpRoot + "/_layouts/download.aspx?SourceUrl=" + o);return false;

  • I get the message 'itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close' when trying to open itunes 11.1.1.11. I have had to uninstall itunes so that I could load this version, the PC says it is correctly loaded, but I now cannot open itunes. Advice?

I get the message 'itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close' when trying to open itunes 11.1.1.11. I had to uninstall itunes so that I could load this version as the update to version 11 kept failing. The PC says 11.1.1.11 is correctly loaded, but I now cannot open itunes. Any advice on how to get itunes working again?

    Hello there, ytnoj.
Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes can be a tricky endeavor and must be done in a very specific way. The following Knowledge Base article provides the step-by-step of the process:

  • Then the screen goes gray and I cannot scroll or click on anything

When I google something via safari I get the google options but my screen is gray and I cannot click
on anything or scroll.  I have turned it on and off several times.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • Macbook 13.3 white, the screen goes off and only comes on when screen moved

    Hi.
I have the macbook 13.3 in white, early 2009 model. The screen keeps going off and the only way I can get it back on is to move the screen back and forth. By the looks of things this is a common problem and it's usually related to a cable between the screen and the logic board.
My question is, how easy is it to open the mac up and get to this cable to re-connect it properly?
Or do Apple repair this FOC due to it being a popular problem?
    Thanks
    Mark

My girlfriend has a white macbook that is just over the year warranty.  We were going to get the Apple care, but forgot as we got the computer at Best Buy and didn't expect to have problems.  I've always previously been a PC guy and had never had problems with my Dells. They all still run and work perfectly but are just obsolete in many ways.
I'm very disappointed with the Macbook.  The screen freezes and fades to white and you have to move the screen to get it to work.  The computer is still running fine, it just seems like a connection to the screen that is the problem.  I brought it to the "genius bar" and they went down and opened up the computer.  When I got it back they advised it might be the cable for the screen or the screen itself.  He went on to say Apple will not just fix that problem, the only option is to have Apple do a $470 (I believe that's what I was quoted) warrantied overhaul of the entire machine.  They don't just fix the problem, they go through the whole machine for $470 and its warrantied.  He said a computer repair shop could probably fix the problem cheaper.  My problem is that this was a fairly expensive machine that is barely over a year old and its having a problem that it seems many people are having and their only solution is to spend half the money of a new one to fix something as small as a cable that is definitely their fault.  I do not think the screen needs to be replaced or the logic board as when you pinch the screen and angle it, it works amazingly.  I opened up the machine just to take a look and it seems that the cable for the video goes through the hinge and there is a pleat inside the hinge shaped to contour the outside of the machine when closed that tugs on the cable slightly.  I also saw that there was some missing screws that the "Genius Bar" may not have put back.  They told me they unplugged and inspected the video cable and the computer worked better for a while which leads me even more to believe there is something wrong with the cable and the hinge design.
I think Apple should fix this problem.  This problem that is becoming more and more common and it is definitely a product defect.  We are paying a decent dollar for these products compared with PC laptops out there.  I'd like to see some decent service.  This is not a $470 "one fix fits all" problem for the customer, this is an easy fix for the company to make on faulty products.  It will cost them little and its the right thing to do.  I predict more and more people will be complaining about this problem in the coming year.  They should not be able to profit on this flaw after so recently profiting on the machines.

  • My MBP 13" wont boot up; asking for restart each time i power on.

    hi,
i found a folder named "usr" in my mac. not knowing how it came there, i deleted it. at the same time, i was updating safari to the latest version-5. i tried to open itunes, but it wouldn't. in between i gave for emptying trash and i think that was when everything went wrong. later when i checked the satus of trash bin, it said, it couldn't access trash as it was still in the process of emptying. i waited for some ten minutes before shutting down.
each time i would start up afterwards, the boot up sound will be heard, a dark screen overlaps the startup screen from top, and gives the warning, like, "you need to restart your machine"; then giving details on how to restart. the message appears in three languages.
    anyone can help?

    Hi
Although you did not know it (probably) but somehow you found one of the invisible folders that makes up your mac's operating system. Clearly in hindsight this was an idiotic thing to do.
Your best bet now is to insert the Installer Disk that came with your laptop and reinstall the OS. No it won't delete anything and it should preserve your account as it exists. Having said that this all depends on your seeming desire to delete things you don't understand. To protect you from yourself it might be best if you made a back up of all your data first.

If You Are Locked Out Or Have Forgotten Your Passcode or Just Need to Restore Your Device
      1. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
      2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
      3. iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.

verification code, never received it when setting up contacts to email pictures, in PHOTOMAIL dialog box it is asking for one to verify my email address and said it was sent to my email, went back and checked and there wasn't anything there, where is it or what do I need to do now????

Does the account you are using have admin rights? I found this :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
+In Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and later, users with administrative privileges aren't prompted to change the region the very first time a DVD-Video disc of a single region is inserted. Instead, the region of the DVD drive is automatically set to the region of the DVD disc that was inserted. Accounts that don't have administrative privileges must authenticate with an administrator account name and password, because changing the drive's region code requires administrative privileges.+
Sounds like it might be worth a try from an admin account first.

If you deleted all password in Thunderbrd and are not being asked for them that points straight at your anti virus program and it's "password vault" messing up. Try disabling email scanning in your internet security suite.
