My MBP shut off after plugging in 3rd party USB and won't start up again

After I plugged in my phone to my MBP with a 3rd party USB cable it shut off and it never turned back on. I read online to wait it out and let the battery die and then plug the MagSafe charger back in. I waited about 24 hours and it still won't turn on. Should I remove the battery and re-insert it?

Try resetting SMC first:

Have you had battery issues recently?
"Should I remove the battery and re-insert it?"
If the SMC reset doesn't help then that's the way that the SMC was reset when you could remove the battery. We've had luck unplugging power adapter and the battery, pressing the power key and replugging the battery after a few minutes.
Late 2011 Macbook Pro refuses to boot. SMC reset doesn't work
"Thanks for your help. Disconnecting the battery and leaving it disconnected for minutes rather than seconds did the trick. I was able to then reset the SMC and it's fine now. Ordered a new internal battery as the one in use is 3 years old now. Maybe that will help."

  • Please Help! MBP shutting off when plugged in, now not recognizing MagSafe Adapter

I started seeing this problem a few weeks ago, my MacBook Pro just shut off spontaneously while watching a video full-screen. I turned it back on and the problem went away for a while. But now, the shut-downs happen more frequently. It doesn't matter if the MBP is running off of the battery or if its running off of the AC cord, it will just shut off. No warning. No standard shut-down process, everything just stops and a balck screen shows up. After it shuts off, it takes a few seconds to get it to restart, and when it does, the computer's date and time will be reset to some date in 2000. Very strange, I've had this computer for a year and I know people with the same model that have had no such problems. The battery is at 168 cylces (I use this for school, so it was being used everyday throughout the last two semesters), and the Condition is listed as Normal in the System profiler, so I doubt the problem is with the battery, but I could be wrong. I've seen posts about the RAM/PRAM causing the date/time resets. Nevertheless, the MBP has been running normally on the battery, battery life is still the same length of time as it was when I first got the computer, and runs smoothly. Up until last night, the AC MagSafe Adapter was still working, so I only used that as the power source. Everything was fine, but the MBP shut off once or twice while it was plugged in within the last month or so, but the AC would still have a green light, indicating the computer was still recognizing the power source. Now, I can't get the MagSafe to be rocognized at all. The computer is running on battery only, and I've tried resetting the SMC, but I'm unsure if it worked since the MagSafe is still unrecognized. When its plugged in, the System Profiler says it is not connected and not charging.
I'm running on Mac OS X 10.6.8, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with a 4GB memory (of which less that half is used). Computer usage is low, so its not like I'm running several programs at once, at most, its two or three at a time, for short periods. My MBP is a 13" aluminum body, doesn't seem to be overheating, has worked fine after long periods of being on and getting hot, I always let it cool down after I feel it getting too warm.
Please help if you can! Thank you!

  • 3rd party USB mouse won't work with G4 iBook 10.3.9

3rd party USB mouse (see specs below)won't work with G4 iBook 10.3.9.
    http://www.inland-products.com/singleproduct.asp?search=usb&partnum=07340-SpecR
I notice the specs say this mouse works with windows(no mention of Mac) yet the guy where I bought it assured me it would work fine with a Mac. The keyboard/mouse preferences shows a muouse but there is no movement or response from mouse. I would assume it was not reading it if not from appearance of "mouse" preference. I also have intalled UBBoverdrive in hopes that that might help but device/mouse menue does not appear to support mouse.
Is there a way to get this to work or should I just return it to the vendor?
Can anyone suggest a good CHEAP 3n button mouse for Mac?

The name of that mouse is deceiving. It is not a USB mouse it is a wireless mouse. Unfortunately without the proper OS X drivers for the USB/wireless adapter you won't be able to get that thing to work.
If you are looking for an inexpensive USB mouse, checkout the Kensington Mouse in a Box Optical.
Does your iBook have Bluetooth? If so take a look at the Kensington PilotMouse Mini Bluetooth Mouse. I have one of these and it works great.

  • MBP shuts off after 10 minutes on a almost full charge.

I have had my Mac for a year and just upgraded to Leopard. Now whenever I go off the charger to battery power it shuts down after 10 to 15 minutes but the battery meters tell me the battery is fully charged. And how the MBp is telling my battery is fully charged at 96%. Could this be a Leopard power management issue I haven't discovered yet?I bought it in May so I don't think it is one of the faulty batteries.

Good news! I guess. I had the same problem - abrupt shut down with ~75% power showing on battery lights and in the top bar. My unit is a 15" Intel MBP 2.33G machine, 20 months old. Took the unit to my local Apple store - fortunate to have on near by. Showed the Genius the trick. He looked in the database and found the problem. It seems there are a number of these things doing this. Something to do with the processor in the battery that monitors and communicates the battery status to the system going bad and making it seem like there is no power even when there is. Bottom line - I was given a new battery! Apple has extended the warranty to cover these problems. GREAT COMPANY! SHOW ME A PC MANUFACTURER THAT WOULD REPLACE A DEFECTIVE BATTERY ON A UNIT 8 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY!

  • When unplugged my MBP randomly shuts down and won't start up again

When my MBP is unplugged it randomly shuts off and won't restart. To get it to boot up again I have to plug it in.
Today I was using my computer for about 15 minutes unplugged and it just shut down by itself. I was right in the middle of typing something and it just cut out. The other weird thing is I don't get a low battery warning, nothing, it just shuts down.
Then I press the power button to restart and I get nothing. Even when I pull the battery out and put it back in nothing. I pressed the battery level button and it blinked rapidly on the lowest 2 lights. Keep in mind I was using my computer unplugged for only 15 minutes immediately after unplugging it from the wall after it had been charing for 15+ hours.
This makes no sense. Please help me.
    -Jacob

Sounds like a bad battery and/or problem with the PMU (power management unit) and/or memory.
"Half the start up sound" is a bad sign as it means it's failing the normal start up tests (I'd guess a Memory problem)
Reset the PMU and run the Hardware tests from Install DVD1 (hold down d at startup) and see what it reports.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Can anybody tell me why Safari keeps shutting down after 1 or 2 mins use?  It will start up again, but the same thing happens.

This problem has only been noticeable for the last 2 weeks, so do you know of anything which may have caused this problem and if so, how can I put it right?

There is no "Restore Safari" on the iPad.
You can try using Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies and Data and Clear History
That may help. You can also reset your iPad:
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off".
These steps might help with Safari crashes.

  • Iphone 5 has shut down and won't start up again

    hey,
my iphone 5 was charging while i was sleeping. I wanted to see what time it was but he just does nothing. There us a black screen (no charging icon). My power button is broken so a reset is not possible. If i connect it via itunes on my mac he can't find him. Help me!!!!

    Hello esterke,
As I understand it you are not able to turn your phone on, and the power button doesn't work so you cannot turn it on that way. You may be able to get it back on by putting it into Recovery Mode, which only requires the USB connection and a working Home button.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • MacBook shut itself down and won't start up again

I am painstakingly typing this on my iphone as my 2010 13"MacBook Pro won't give any sign of life appart from the battery indicator, which indicates that the battery is full. I brought it to the apple service centre here in Germany, who say that there is a power problem, the cause of which they can't identify, and that they would need to replace the logic board at a cost of well over 600 euro (guarantee only just ran out a few months ago). I am dithering whether to have it repaired as I only get a 90 day guarantee on the repair and apple allegedly don't know what caused the problem in the first place, or whether it could happen again. Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice?

I'm not sure what additional information I can give. The MacBook had always worked fine until now. It has on occasion heated it up a bit, but that seems to be common from what im reading.. I've never had any of the display problems that others in this community have had.
Unfortunately, prices tend to be a good bit higher here in Europe. I'm being charged over 400 euro for the logic board alone (more than USD 500). The third-party service providers I've seen so far seem to charge similar fees. Plus I've already paid for the diagnostic 65 euro, which gets offset against the final bill if I go ahead with the repair, so I wouldn't be saving much with a DIY job.
It's all very frustrating as it is; one of the main reasons I chose the macbook is that I thought I was getting something that was going to last. My big fear now is that I might end up throwing more money down the drain by having it fixed.

  • MBP shuts off when hot [only when battery plugged in even if its on ac pow]

So when my early 2006 MBP heats up, it shuts off. This only happens with this specific aftermarket battery that I bought. Even when I have ac power with that battery installed, it will shut off. When the battery is out and it is running on ac power it will never shut of, even when heated beyond what my oven can do.
I understand it is the aftermarket battery that is causing this. But is there a solution to this? I did everything from PRAM reset to calibrating the battery. But it did not help. I can't afford an official battery on a student budget so that is a no go for me.

I understand your cost concerns but the symptoms you've mentioned should not be ignored or masked by doing something that covers them up instead of eliminating them. I would contact the battery seller/maker and seek relief that way. Continuing use under those conditions can lead to damage, and I don;t believe there is anything you can do to mitigate the issue as long as you are sure the battery is the root cause.
Before contacting anyone, you need to get a utility that reads temps. A lot of Mac notebooks can be "to hot" to the touch but not dangerously hot to the components. Best not to guesstimate temps. Try this Dashboard widget:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Also understand that, when you run a MacBook Pro with the battery removed, the processor speed clocks back quite a bit. This article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332?viewlocale=en_US
explains why but does not say how much. Knowledgeable posters hear have suggested it's significant--clocking back to either 1/2 rated speed or to 1gHz. That will reduce temps anyway.
You may want to post your "Battery Information" section from System Profiler (in your Utilities folder) so we can look at battery condition. That may provide you with some extra ammo for confronting the battery makers should that path prove appropriate. Omit any serial numbers when posting battery info.

  • MBP shuts down after 30 minutes of inactivity

Hello - I've posed this question before and thought it was solved but it has come back.  My MBP (circa 2008) with OS 10.6.8 continues to attempt a shut down after about 30 minutes of inactivity.  If there is an open app it prevents the shut down but it sure is annoying.
Does anyone have ideas on how to prevent this?  (Please note I am talking about a complete shut down - not going to sleep.)
    Thanks!

    Thanks Carolyn,
I worked my way through the options and then eventually tried the reset.  Bummer, no luck.  My MBP still tries to shut off after a half hour passes.  It's odd that the timing is so consistent, yet there are no settings I can find that would cause this shut down.

  • HP DV6-6B25TX shutting off after 10 to 15 seconds irrespective of battery power or AC power

    Hi,
MY DV6-6B25TX is shutting off after 10 to 15 seconds irrespective of battery power or AC power.
Following is the complete scenario of what happened during the last few weeks:-
Two weeks back i was using the laptop with the AC adaptor plugged in for charging, the battery got charged upto 99% then it stopped charging and the battery icon text displayed, 'Plugged in, Not Charging'.
A week back the battery was 20 %, after plugging in the charger, still the same message 'Plugged in, Not Charging'.
Now the laptop doesnt respond to the power key when the battery is inserted.
If i remove the battery and again put it back, it starts without pushing the power button and shuts off after 10 seconds, i.e. even before starting Windows.
It shuts down even when on Bios Screen, so OS is definately not the issue.
When i connect the charger and press the power button, same thing i.e. starts and shutts off after 10 to 15 seconds irrespective of BIOS screen or Windows Boot.
I removed the ram and but it back again but still the problem persists.
Also there is no question of overheating due to dust as i have barely used the laptop for a few hours, the laptop is around 6 months old and under warranty.
    Please Advice ASAP.
    Thanks in Advance.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Honestly, something is preventing the battery from being charged. The notebook shutting down seconds after reinserting the battery is a good indication the battery just isn't getting charged. This could be a failed battery, charger, charging port, or motherboard in rare instances.
Since it is in warranty, I recommend contacting HP support as there is no easy fix for this on the forums. It is a hardware issue.
The number for support in the U.S.A. and Canada is 1-800-474-6836.
