My MBP was a lemon!

I decided to switch to Mac and am really questioning that decision. My $2,800 MBP died after 1 week because the 2 GB memory was bad.
The service has been good but it is extremely disappointing to have to spend hours with AppleCare and now 2 weeks without a computer waiting for my replacement.
I miss my PC. Please reassure me that I made the right decision to change.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Mary
It sounds to me as if you were very unlucky with your first machine, but Apple are replacing it with a new machine for you.
Once you have your new machine, you'll find mac OSX an absolute joy to use. You will spend more time being productive than responding to whatever updates your PC decides to carry out without your permission.
I recently started up my top end Vaio laptop and I couldn't belive how much of a nightmare it was. Norton running system checks, windows updating, it took 20 minutes before the system was ready to be used.
I'm on my 2nd MacBook Pro, I had a couple of issues with my first one, but I am now a very happy MacBook Pro user. it is an absolute joy to use.
The speed, the reliability, the design and the OS is just way to superior to anything PC's offer and Windows has to ffer in the near future (Vista).
Bear with it and you will not doubt your switch. There is a slight learning curve, the unlearning all the bad habits you learned using Windows, but once done, you will ask yourself how you ever lived without a Mac.
If you try a PC after using your Mac for a while, you will really appreciate how well Apple do things and you will never want to switch back to PC's.
I am not standing up for Apple here, but new technologies and a new manufacturing plant will inevitably bring with it some teething problems. Hopefully your replacement machine will be all you hoped it would have been and you will love you mac ownership.
I switched 4 years ago to the PowerPC platform and had no issues at all. One or two teething issues with the Intel Mac's but both my Intel beasts are running smoothly and leave the powerPC machines in the dust performance wise. Even so, I don't regret my switch.
The problems I've had are now resolved and time lost due to the problems is still a fraction of the time I would have lost if I'd been running Wind-ohs machines. Productivity is up, profits are up and computing is a joy.
Good luck with your new machine. Any problems there are loads of helpful users on the forum to assist you. All you have to do is ask.

  • MBP was hacked? Help for a Newbie.

Hi everyone. I think my WEP was cracked and my MBP was hacked. WEP was cracked because the lock is gone. Tried to restart, sorry don't have access to router to restart that or confirm connections on that hardware. Connecting to MBP via airport. Have been in system preferences and attempted to re-connect with WEP passowrd. I've learned online that WEP2 is better, so lesson learned. If I post the netstat commands I ran would you be able to tell me if my system has been hacked? From my newbie knowledge of how to read netstat I thinkit was-  There have been connections to open port numbers in the 5000 range from which I have read online is an alert. Also, I do not recognize the ip addresses or hostnames and also I see files were sent and received. I've run Mac Scan trial version - but from my knowledge this does not confirm connections to my computer from an ulocked airport connection. Additionally, all of a sudden I have theDS_Store on my system, is this an indicator of a hack. Sorry guys and gals for all the Q's.If this is the incorrect forum for the question could you kindly point me to where I would ask this. Thanks for any help. JO

Thanks people. I xed out some info I think is personal ip or isp - let me know if you needed this info. i called it my ip but maybe it is my isp - in any case, it starts with 192. Let me know also if i posted too much info.
netstat - It's alot of info. on the internet I see amazon web servers is  Ec2 is this- and from what I read this is a way to transfer files.
Today I closed all browsers, and ran netstst -n and netstat.
as I noticed other times I ran and lookedup the ip address that they were browser tabs that I had opened (makes sense- it's reading what my computer is connected to).....
Thanks guys.and if i was hacked should I take computer to genius bar or police?

My MBP was runnning unbelievable slow, I need to re-install fresh Lion, but when I upgraded to Lion, I did not got the disc or thumb drive. What should I do?R

Instead, you could restart holding the Command and R keys, which will start up on the Recovery partition Lion creates, and then restore the operting system on the main partition.
Before doing anything like erasing the startup drivek maie sure you have an external drive with a backup copy incase things go badly.

  • My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare display has developed a dark band at the edges of the screen approximately the same width as the aluminum surround. This wasn't present when the MBP was new. Am near an Apple Store, but anyone else had this problem

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare display has developed a dark band at the edges of the screen approximately the same width as the aluminum surround. This wasn't present when the MBP was new. I'm near an Apple Store and can take the laptop in, but has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for your input. I didn't completely flesh out what I'm seeing visually. The resolution settings are all correct for my screen. The problem is if, say, looking at the gray startup screens or a completely white full-screen image, there is a perimeter of graying, almost as if the LEDs are somehow not as bright as the rest. It's also curious that the thickness of this phenomenon is almost exactly the same as the metal bezel around the display. I will be taking it to an Apple Store for a look, as I'm also having several minor hardware problems that need to be addressed and remedied.

While I just stood I saw a spark at MBP where it connected to Magsafe. I immediately disconnected the MBP but I found it 100% charged. However now its not charging anymore. No light glowing on Magsafe 2 connector. I also tried different electrical outlet but issue persists.

  • Mbp retina a lemon?

I have owned macbook pro's for a few years now - i have on 2008, 2010 and now a brand new 2.7 Ghz, retina with 16Gb and 768 drive - top shelf.  I have to say it is MUCH worse than my old 2010 model (which had its own problems).  Here is the punch list:-
Graphics seems slower - I do a lot of software development in video and the retina display test slower than the old mbp it replaced.  I'll add this is running under parallels but the setup is a direct clone.
Retina display - my eyesight isn't quite 20/20 but I rarely see any benefit over the old mbp screen at 1050 pix?  Is this the emporer's new clothes?
Glary screen - my old mbp had the non-glare screen and without it - I am always adjusting the screen to avoid glare form lights desk surface etc etc
Return from Sleep - my old mbp used to take 2-5 seconds to wake from sleep - this new lemon takes about 10 second - 20 seconds sometimes 30 ????
My old mbp used to not ssurvive running out of power - everytime was a full reboot - (actually have to reboot twice as it starts to restart and fails) well that isn't fixed - it still happens.
I love the lightweight on the new machine - almost enough to put up with these issues and wait for a fix - but vanity in admitting mistakes and the fact no one else is complaining makes me think the fix isn't going to come.
I am seriously on the verge of reverting back to my old macine - and admitting I've been ripped for over $4000.......

If you can not tell the difference in the display between a 2010 MBP and a retina MBP then there must be something wrong with your eyes or you don't have the display preferences set for  "best for retina display".  I have both machines as well and it is painfully difficult to use the 2010 MBP now because all the text looks fuzzy now compared to the retina display.
The 2010 MBP glossy display is far worse then the retina display as far as glare.  You could get the matte finish on the 2010 MBP (which you have) but I hated those and it should be evident when comparing a 2010 glossy MBP to a 2010 matte display that the colors are washed out and the resolution appears worse.  But otherwise yes, you will have more glare then the 2010 matte finish but superior colors and viewing angles.
Return from sleep on my retina MBP is nearly instantaneous.  Your wake from sleep time is my boot time.  Something is wrong with your system.

  • NC6000 wireless max speed of 11 Mbps & was 54 Mbps before hdd replacement - XP Pro sp3

I had to replace my hdd. All went well except my wireless lan speed now seems to be capped at 11 Mbps. Before the crash I was getting speeds of 54 Mbps. I have tried numerous things to no avail. It is apparent I do not know what I am doing. When I hover over the wireless lan icon I see the following:
    Wireless Network Connection  2 (default)
    Speed: 11 Mbps
    Signal Strength: Very Good
    Status: Connected
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

    SOLVED:
The Airport Extreme is dying. Why it works on some computers and not others is beyond me but, after replacing it, everything works flawlessly. I hope this is covered under warranty.

  • My MBP was working fine, but then the display just shut off... What should I try?

I was using my MacBook Pro 2011 13', when the display suddenly shut off. I thought at first that the computer shut down, but after a hard reset, the computer is on (keys lighting up, fan noises, heartbeat light on) but the display is completely black. I no longer have apple coverage. Does anyone have a recommendation of things I could try before taking it in?

    Try resetting the SMC.
    Barry

  • Keyboard issue - my late 2010 MBP was working fine until SUDDENLY none of my letters would work - just numbers and a few other keys, and my trackpad would not left click, every click and tap was registered as a right click.

If I reboot, my mouse functions normally UNTIL I hit any of the keyboard keys, then it wont stop right clicking everytime I click.
Some of my keys are acting wierdly - I think 'I' does the TAB function, and J for example acts as the Enter/Return key.
I have opened the keyboard utility thing, and it recognises that I am pressing the keys, but nothing is being typed on my screen.
I have attempted to boot into safe mode, reset PRAM, run AHT but my Macbook simply doesnt want to know, just boots into OS X normally - this is with the built in keyboard and a USB External One.
Its worth noting also that with the USB keyboard, I can type fine - also, if I reboot, my clicks are fine until I hit a key on the inbuilt keyboard, then it starts its right clicking again, however, if I then press a key on the USB keyboard the trackpad is 'reset' and allows me to click normally again.
I have read various other threads but none really the same as mine which *****.

    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
ALSO if the computer turns on, the reset was done incorrectly

  • Random wallpaper change greatly slows down my compoter?

Hey everyone I'm using the random wallpaper changer built into the Mac 10.5 operating system. But the problem seems that it's taking a LOT of the computer power/resources to change the wallpaper. So if it's changing while I'm in the process of watching a youtube video, or typing, everything seems to pause and just REALLY slows down. I have it set to change 1 per min, so the only "solution" is to make it move farther back to like 1 an hour or something like that, but still it'd still slow down when it goes to change. So it's a big annoyance! I really like this application because I can never settle on one wallpaper, but I wish there was a way to change wallpapers without it slowing down my computer.
Are there any "3rd party" applications? Thanks everyone!

I have a MBP that sounds like your problem.
If I ran a heavy video with the desktop change going everything would slow down. It was especially noticeable with the keyboard.
I have been working with AppleCare and they decided that the MBP was a lemon. I just got another MBP and it seems to be working fine.
I would suggest that you contact AppleCare and let them know the issues you are having.
    good luck

  • Can Somebody tell me how to get my MBP like it Was...

I received a new MBP (thanks to a genius who was tired of trying to fix all my software and hardware issues). The same tech said when the new MBP comes in he will transfer my data, settings, etc to my new computer and update it. I did not think of it at the time, but when I got the MBP (the new one back) and realized he transfered everything, Preferences settings, files, folders, even the programs in a seperate folder-all that I would think one could transfer in regards to software. When my new MBP started acting up I realized a lot of the stuff it was doing was what my old MBP was doing.
I called him and asked if we should have tried to fix the software issues before transferring everything or maybe just putting them in folders and I could save my bookmarks, docs, etc. but trash all the settings, preferences, stuff like that.
I would like to get the notebook back to how it arrive at the Apple Store plus with the latest important updates. I know it involves some critical stuff, but I do not have enough confidence that I will be able to accomplish what needs to be done and have it done correctly.
Are there articles for a new MBP that walks a person step by step in removing everything, wiping the HD clean and doing a fresh install, step by step in the correct order of things and leaving everything off other then my passwords, bookmarks, and a few docs?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Roger-
What about the bookmarks? I really have nothing I want to save and transfer over because all I have been through with the old MBP and now this new one with the data that was transferred from my old MBP. I would have thought that the genius guy would have thought about the problems since he was the one who tried to fix the old MBP and left to talk to the manager and came back to tell me they were going to get me a new MBP.
Anyway, what about the ONE-to-One that I registered on this computer and I have a link to click that brings me to my page and other things like my keychain or all my passwords and usernames? It looks like I missed some with the new MBP because it does not have a name and some small stuff like that is missing because I did not do a set-up. The genius guy did the transfer of all my stuff from my old MBP.
There were a lot of updates that the genius guy did get (but when I got the MBP, I have been unable to get the machine to tell me I have new updates). I had to find out was I really missing updates or was it something else. I tried to find the place that lists the updates that come across <Apple>Software Updates... I found several "latest updates, recent 3rd party updates, top Apple downloads, but I am not sure which category is the one that tells me the updates I should have had. I know that iTunes it missed, but the rest I am not sure which list has the updates I need.
Make any sense? I did not get an iLife disk. Is iLife on the grey disks now?

  • New MBP on the way...... from China?

I got a notification that my MBP was shipping yesterday and today checked to see its status, excited that it was on the way. However, the Fedex Tracking information is showing it coming from China... Is this normal? I've never ordered anything and had it direct shipped from another country......
    Thanks,
    glenn

Yeah but China's quality assurance is sh*t
poor, if left to the local folks. Then again,
    Apple's ain't too hot either!
Apple, and just about every other major computer design company/manufacture, including Sony, Toshiba, HP, etc have been making their machines in Asia for at least four years now, this isn't anything new. The last Apple to ship out of California plants was back in 2002 or early 2003 at the latest.
To be honest, there will be lemons no matter where you make them. If you want a machine made in North American, be prepared to fork over another $1000 per unit, so a MBP goes from being a $1800-3500 machine to being a $3000 to $4500 machine.

  • ReInstall Mac OsX Why did I get the Lemon?

Hello folks since my MBP is a lemon I need to resolve some issues again and again and some well I have never resolved like crackling audio... Maybe I expect too much from this hunk of junk, I have a large drive with 100+ programs installed 2mb of Ram and I run bootcamp. My Cpu gets maxed out when running Saffari? ***? Audio drop outs crackling, freezing you think I was running a windows machine,
crap man I really feel like suing apple and getting a new MBP this one after 3 years of problems I am convinced it has crappy hardware being the very first Gen.
Anyhow looking past my venting I am wondering this
Is there a way to reinstall the files for Mac OSX without having to redo my whole computer? U can do this on windows i know. It will take me a week to redo everything otherwise. I have never done the time machine thing either...
Any other suggestions? I need to use this computer for live audio but I can't trust it in its current state.

Time machine backup and restore from an external HDD. Or, use Archive and Install with Preserve Users and Network Settings.
Sorry for your troubles - my 1st gen MBP has worked flawlessly for over three years now, the only problem being a bad battery (Sony's fault), which Apple replaced for free several months after my warranty expired.

  • Anyone actually loving their 15" MBP?

    Hi everyone,
Sorry for another 'should I buy a MBP...' post. Just sold my dual core g5 + in process of deciding whether to retire my ti book 800 just yet.
I want to love the 15" mbp - after all i always loved the 15" powerbook, it is my favourite form factor etc. But with all this trouble is it worth taking a gamble now on the 15? My question is really - is anyone actually loving their 15" MBP? Ie 100% no regrets, no blackbook envy, no 17" envy? Most posts seem to say otherwise (and I know people tend only to post when they got probs). But this is a lot of probs for a new model (and i've owned some lemons in the past - the 1.8SP 600mhz fsb pmg5 for example)
Statistically, if I buy a mbp tomorrow what are the chances that i will enter a world of pain (phonecalls to apple, trips to the store, tears, 4mths b4 they swap it out...oh the memories of the 1.8sp)?
Is the blackbook or 17 a more reliable buy - what is the consensus?
    Thanks!

    m2dax:
After reading the stories here, it actually looks like the answer is: it depends...
My first MBP was DOA so a swap was no problem. I live nowhere near a real Apple store so I bought online (got the educator's discount, to boot) and when I had to swap, it was an exchange via FedEx. Mostly painless except when they tell you one ship date but delay for 3 or more days, it's excruciating.
But I've read here that some people can convince their rep to swap, even after 14 days, and others have said No way! There is some talk about having to go through 3 repair cycles before being qualified to swap but I guess it all depends on your Apple Care guy.
If buying online, I've read that you might have a problem swapping in a store due to them not having every configuration in stock. Again, it depends.
Oh, and to answer your original question: I was a little scared after discovering my first MBP was DOA... I wondered what I had gotten myself into. I only had a Mini for about 6 months at the time and was worried I'd blown $2500 on junk.
But after the updates and the possibility that my CPU "goo" had to break-in (yeah, it's actually cooler now than it was in the beginning), I do love it. The moo is gone now and the whine is less. I don't know how to explain all that. Perhaps it will all come back in the future.
But for now, I love my 15" MBP, 2.0GHz, 1GB (soon to be 2GB) RAM, 100GB-7200RPM-HDD...
I hope you buy and you love yours, too.
