My MBP with OS Maverick reboot alone

Hi all.
My MBP with OS Maverick reboot alone, it may be at 10 minutes or in 10 hours. This is the report that the machine returns when it reloads.
You can guide me with any ideas? Thanks!

I'm running out of hd space on my MBP with Mavericks OS. How do I move my Photoshop 5 app off the computer for more space, and store the PS5 app on DVD or on my backup hd for a future reinstall on my next Mac with larger hd?
    Thanks

    slaglejrp,
perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

  • External ITWorks Numpad won't work on MBP with Mavericks

    Hello,
I'd be really thankful if anyone knows the solution to this one:
I have a new MBP with Mavericks 10.9.2, for working in Sibelius (notation software) I always used an external
numeric pad, an I.T. Works model (KP-6910W) via USB.
It perfectly worked with my old MBP (OS 10.5.something) but isn't even recognised by my new computer.
Choices in "change keyboardtype" in the system preferences menu only contain full keyboards by either japanese, european or
    american standards, but no numpads...
    Thanks!
    Philipp

    Philipp,
I use KeyRemap4MacBook as a numeric keypad substitute. On a US English keyboard layout, pressing the fn key provides the following “built-in” numeric keypad equivalents:
    7890-   to   789/=
    uiop    to   456*
    jkl;    to   123-
    m,./    to   0,.+

  • Got a new MBP with Mavericks but still prompting to download Mavericks in App Store

I'm not sure if I have to download and install Mavericks again on this machine but this is a brand new late october MBP with OS X 10.9

You don't need to download OS X Mavericks because you are already using it. The only purpose to download OS X Mavericks would be to create a USB drive with the Mavericks installer in case you want to reinstall Mavericks in the future

  • How to restore MBP with dual drives from time machine

Hi one and all. Hoping I can get some help here. My trusty mid 2010 i5 MBP's hdd died on me the other day, which isn't really the problem, as I've got two time machine back-ups. The issue is that in my wisdom I decided to swap out my old (and nearly full) 500 GB HDD with a 240 GB SSD (Crucial M500). I then loaded OSX 10.6.3 via the dvd that came with my MBP, formatting the SSD in the process. Then promptly removed the optical drive for a Samsung 1TB drive, formatted it and started transferring all my data over via the migration assistant.
I put everything other than photos, movies and some documents on the SSD, with the space hungry images, movies and docs going on the HDD. Now I'm assuming that because my boot drive (the SSD) is smaller than the time machine back-up (about 480 GB), this was the only way to do it? Doesn't really sound like I've got much of a problem then does it? Well, I then attempted to update the OS to OS X 10.6.8 so I could update again to mavericks. I installed the update to 10.6.8 and now I'm stuck in a perpetual log-in loop. The password is correct, it starts to log-in, then blue screen and back to log-in... repeat to fade or until you feel like giving your mac a Basil Faulty style thrashing, which ever comes first.
I've ordered a thumb drive with Lion 10.7 on so that I can attempt to try again (really can't be bothered to re-install the optical drive), but I was hoping someone may have experienced this kind of issue before and have some kind words of wisdom. No worries if not, I'll just go outside and try to find a decent branch to thrash my previously loved mac with
    Cheers
    Rich

Right well it appears I have further complicated things for myself. Whilst I was waiting to sort out my MBP, I restored from time machine to my mac mini so that I had a machine to work from. Then I fixed my MBP by installing new drives (SSD and HDD where the optical drive used to be), and using migration assitant to copy everything over from time machine. So now I technically have two machines the same.
Only problem is when I try to update the MBP with Mavericks it tells me it cannot install on this machine. Is this because I did restored the same original mac to two new machines?

  • Does anybody have a functioning 17" mbp with a 6Gb/s SSD drive?

I ordered a MacBookPro 17" (June 2011) with the 7200rpm hard drive which is a slow drive, but comes at no extra cost with the machine.
The ssd's Apple ships with the mbp's are relatively slow and expensive, so I do not consider them an option. I therefore ordered an OWC Mercury Pro 6G (240GB) sata3 SSD drive and replaced the hard drive with it. Under both Snow Leopard and Lion I get beach balls almost continuously. Installing the ssd in a co-workers 15" mbp makes the drives work at over 500 mb/s, so the drive is not the problem.
I explained this to the people at AppleCare's helpdesk and they state, since I used a non Apple item, they can't help me. They tell me to go to a local reseller and have them install the ssd for me. This way the mbp is still valid for AppleCare. The local reseller won't touch my mbp since I bought it online at Apple (and not at his store), plus I did not buy the OWC drive in his store. In short, AppleCare is useless here. They claim I should've ordered one of the Apple ssd's (which are basically sata2 drives).
Since the 17" mbp supports sata3 and has the fastest processors of the mbp range (which is why I bought it in the first place) I do not understand why Apple would force me to 'downgrade' to a non current ssd. I work with large 3D drawing files as well as multilayered large photoshop files, so having a fast drive is very beneficial to my workflow. The hardware in the 13" and 15" mbp's support the functionality of a 6G ssd in practice, whereas the 17" mbp only does that on paper. Selling my 17" and swapping it for a 15" model seems the only option but I refuse to believe a company that claims to be technologically advanced can ignore having specifications that only work on paper. There is no record, comment or even gossip of Apple indicating this is a problem, let alone they are working on a fix, despite finding numerous forums online where people have the same problem I have.
So for the record, on the official Apple Support site, directed to both Apple developers and users:
Is there anybody that has a functioning 17" MBP with a 6Gb/s SSD?
If you have, please let me know the specs or your machine and drive so I can see if there is a solution to unleash the full potential of my MBP.
I believe there is no sadder sight than the sullen tread of a caged (osx) Lion. Help me free the desert's fallen king!! ;-)

Thanks wjosten for your reply. I filled out a feedback form.
To comment on AussieDJ's post: I tried the OWC shielding kit, doesn't work. The problems described with 6Gb/s ssd's were all with pre March MBP's. Mine is a June 2011 MBP so I figured the problem would've been solved in the mean time. I guessed wrong there. Since I waited for the release of OSX Lion (and the trim support functionality) I thought this would solve the spinning beach ball issue. I guessed wrong there as well. Can't return the ssd anymore (>30 days) so I glued the ssd on our offices "wall of shame". Being an architecture office we have everybody in the office put up poorly designed objects here (sort of a cool and uncool board but then labelled ***? and No way!). I should've glued y 17" MBP on this wall actually (since it's hardware does not work with the 6Gb/s ssd), but the bugger is too heavy and won't stick... ;-)
The worst part of the story is that my dad got his 6Gb/s ssd to wortk in his windows notebook...and he does not skip an opportunity to rub it in (your MBP can't do no 6G)!
Let's hope there will be an EFI update!

  • ITunes block unmount on MBP with lion

    Hello,
I have some trouble with my MBP using Lion and itunes.
Since 5 weeks I can not shut down my MBP when I run itunes with my mediathek.
To get a better piction of the problem, I tried to isolate the issue.
    - I have tested the mediathek using my acoount on my old MB (with Lion and itunes) this mac has no issue to shut down.
Therefor I moved my mediathek to an external drive and select this mediathek with itunes on start up.
Bu I have an issue, when I use this mediathek on my MBP with itunes. After I have used the mediathek on that external drive,
I am not able to unmount the drive or to shut down the mac.
    - When I only use an empty Mediathek on my MBP, I do not have this issue and can shut down. the mac.
I also tried to fix permissions
I update all apps and all update packages mac suggest. A long time I had the issue some update were not possible becaus I was not able to reboot.
By the time i found out, that itunes has this issue, I changed my configuration and itunes to not start any more on start up.
What can I check or do to solve this issue?
    Kind regards
    Balduin

I'm assuming you've done this, but you don't explicitly say you have, so I'll ask if you've completely shut down your MacBook, waited a few seconds, the started it up again. If you have done this, I'm guessing it didn't help?
Another tip is to repair permissions using Disk Utilities. If that doesn't work you can also repair the disk, but let's leave that one for last. Try the shut down and cold-boot first, then repairing the permissions.

I have a macbook pro with OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and some keys randomly are not working. Specifically, the enter/return button, the "p", "0", ";", and all the function keys.  What's really weird is that happens randomly.  I've never spilled anything on it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this.  Can anyone help?  of course this happened after my warranty expired.

    **update**
I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose.  In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!).  Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind.  I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store.  But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working.
So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off.  Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
    Hopefully this might help someone.

  • I have a MBP with Parallels. I deleted Firefox from OSX and lost all bookmarks. Is there a way to retrive them?

I have a MBP with Lion as well as Parallels and Windows 7. In Lion, I completely uninstalled Firefox using "Clean My Mac." Don't ask me why:( Understandably, my bookmarks are gone.
Are they hidden anywhere they can be retrieved? I have been trying to fix this for three days using all your suggestions but just do not have the savvy to do it alone.
    Help!!
    Dave Cain

Thanks Edmeister. I was able to reach from OSX to Windows 7 to locate and 'Restore' to a bookmark backup file from the Firefox resident to Windows. In fact, I see a list of old dates that are prior to my deleting Firefox from OSX. But none of them changed any of the current bookmarks in OSX Firefox. I then Restored Firefox on the Windows side but it didn't give me any new bookmarks. I was under the impression (incorrectly) that both sides might have the same bookmarks. Wrong answer.
When going into Time Machine, there is also no luck because the Firefox file does not exist in Application Support, so there is nothing to pull from there.
    Sounds like it's game over.

  • Macbook Pro regular 2012 vs 2013 MBP with retina

I am deciding whether to get a new 2012 MBP, non retina, 4gb/500gb/ with dvd rom or the new MBP with retina. My needs are basic, nothing to advanced. I can get MPR for $950 out the door. I dont want to buy something I really dont need or will use. Any thoughts?

PS: side-by-side specs, graphics and drive data rates,
the newer of the two may be the better one to get, as
it has later Thunderbolt  with higher capacities, too.
Look into mactracker or other specification chart that
can be opened beside each other (as I have now) &
then you can see sections in each model, one at a
    time. MacTracker shows general-software-memory+
    graphics-connections-history by category.
2013 model Thunderbolt, Hard Drive Interface, graphics
spec all look good. Not sure if the history of graphic issue
in the dual-graphic card model 2012, was overcome or not.
However this may require some research...
If yours is one that shipped with Mavericks OS X 10.9
you may do well to get a copy of the installer on a
USB and dedicate it as a backup or set up a second
drive or other device to safe a download of the installer
and/or a copy-clone of the Mavericks. The limited total
of RAM available may not be a problem, with both units
shipping with an SSD and not a rotational HDD. And if
you like (& if yours has OS X 10.9) you could then use
OS X 10.10 too.  Be careful an 'upgrade' isn't done to
an older system by accident; surprises aren't so nice.
With either choice, be sure to get & make suitable backup
of your files in addition to a device to use Time Machine.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Google Chrome Crashing MBP with retina display

My customer just bought a MBP with retina display and Google Chrome is crashing the laptop and rebooting every time he is running the program. Has anyone else seen this problem? He is thinking about taking it back and going back to PC... Please help!! thanks

You might also want to install the excellent gfxCardStaus from Cody Krieger. For some reason Google Chrome feels as if it needs to use the discrete graphics card when, since the fix with the Intel 4000 GPU, it has been able to use integrated. gfxCardStatus let's you use one or the other or discrete switching (for instance with Photoshop, etc., apps that really do need discrete GPU.
    Good luck,

  • Losing calendar alarms with new Maverick version

Since I upgraded to Maverick I'm losing calendar alerts if I snooze the alert..
I set an alert for two days prior to an event.
If I then snooze the alert for 2 hours, then power off my computer until the next day, I never get another alert.
If I check the event is says it has an alert at a specific date and time, which was during the time the computer was OFF, 2 hours after I snoozed it..
The older version did NOT work this way...
It seems like the new version instead of the snooze delaying the alert, it is setting it for a specific time, and so if the computer is rebooted and powered back on AFTER that time has passed then it doesn't raise an alert...   I suppose they've built this app assuming that everyone just leaves their computers powered on all the time?
Any ideas of how I can get around this?
Seems like a lot of the apps got quite a bit worse with the Maverick "upgrade"...

Check your Options > Advanced > Default Services and confirm you have your calendar set as the defult calendar, as well as in the Calendar options.

  • HP tm2 reboots alone

I´ve bought a TM2 in US a couple weeks ago, it reboots alone some times. Does anyone experience the same problem?

You have taken every logical repair step. Have you tried the replacement AC adapter with another laptop or tested it for voltage output? There is no reason I can think of for this problem to survive a motherboard replacement.

  • Thunderbolt display problems using MBP with lid closed

I am experiencing a very reproducible problem since purchasing aThunderbolt display to use with a recent (1 month old) Macbook Pro 13"2.7GHz i7.
I use my MBP with lid closed with myThunderbolt display. If Ithen allow the MBP to sleep and power down, on restarting it the WiFi hasstopped working- the menu bar says I am connected by WiFi but Safari will notconnect to the internet and Time Machine cannot connect to the Airport/TimeCapsule to backup. Nothing I do will fix it (shutting down all programs, turingWiFi off then on) and so I have to shutdown/reboot BUT THEN the MBP freezesduring shutdown (waiting 15, 20, 30 minutes!) and I have to hold down the powerbutton (hard reboot). Once I reboot everything works fine UNTIL I take a breakand the computer goes to sleep again.
Doesn't seem to be a problem with the MBP lid open, but I needto test this a bit more to be sure...
On top of this the Bluetooth trackpad now keeps going on andoff; connected, not connected despite being near or the computer. Veryirritating at best, unusable at worst. This only started to be a major problem(every 10-15 minutes or so) when I started to use the Thunderbolt display.
These problems seems to be in some ways similar to anotherthread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16205098#16205098
("Major problemswith Thunderbolt display & MBAir")
I have applied the recent Thunderbolt Firmware update, and SMC& PRAM/NVRAM resets. Interestingly these seemed to work initially but thenafter a prolonged power-down period the problem has recurred. Back to square 1.
    Any ideas out there?

Just to be clear, have you installed everything that you find on this page?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4644
I just talked to Apple Care about Thunderbolt issues in general and even though I already had the Thunderbolt Software Update installed, he had me reinstall it.  If you go to this page:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16889000#16889000
you can read in detail about the issues I was having which have for the most part been remedied (for now at least!)
The Thunderbolt cable definitely transfers heat for some reason even when there isn't a high CPU utilization.  The process 'kernel_task' seems to be where the API for thunderbolt is running.  But for some reason, the behavior of CPU Utilization to Fan Speed is amplified when connected to the TBD.
    Apple Care is researching it.

Same question answered here : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5762314?tstart=0
I just popped in with using Mavericks (I got rid of my MBP about a year ago, and just got another one when I got an Air for my wife) and noticed that Mavericks is not working and playing well with a couple of programs I already owned (Paraellels, for example...yes, I spelled it wrong...).  I looked for maginon.com and it didn't exist, nor was my google search directed to another location for them, so I postulate that the device may not be in production anymore, thus: no driver updates from the manufacturer.
From my mac-noob-layman's perspective: get some vmware, run windows and use the scanner in your virt machine to capture your images.  Put the images in your mac side and work your mac magic on them there.
    Peace
