My MBP wont see or burn blank disks yet sees filled disks fine

Hi,
My problem reads just as above.
When I insert a blank disc into my MBP it seems to just cruise and no untitled disk icon comes up in finder or on my desktop. It does however acknowledge any other disc that has information on it.
I've checked system preferences and they aren't set to ignore.
I ran verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions and nothing comes up there.
I recently re-downloaded the superdrive firmware update and reinstalled it.
Ive done a PRAM reset twice and it doesnt change it.
I also formatted my hard drive a few days ago and it was working fine, but once I did a system restore via my time capsule this problem has come back again (which leads me to believe that it must be a setting of software problem, that I brought back)
I've ran out of ways to try and solve this!
Can anyone please help me with this? Other wise my last resort is to to a clean format and just bring everything back via migration assistant...
Also I have a Mashita UJ -868 and my permissions in system profiler say this:
Firmware Revision: KB19
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Thanks in advance!!!

In case that drive isn't in use yet:
Plug it into your Mac
Insert the DVD that came with Mac or the current SL install disk
Reboot
+ press and Hold the 'C' key when you hear the starting chime to boot off that installation DVD
Now install OS X onto the ext drive
Having done so - boot off the ext drive: If your problem still persist it might be hardware related

  • MBP won't recognise new internal HD, but sees old one fine...

    Hi all,
I tried to replace my 160GB HD on my 2007 MBP with a Seagate Momentus 750GB drive today.  Firstly I used SuperDuper to copy my OSX startup disk to the new drive, mounted in a USB caddy.  I verified that the copy on the new drive was OK by alt-restarting my MBP with it connected in the caddy and selecting it as the startup disk.  It started up fine.
So then I replaced my old HD with the new one, and started up.  The drive was not recognised - I got the blinking questionmark folder... So I replaced the old HD and all was fine again.  I did this twice, each time with the same result.
Does anyone know what might be causing this, and if I can solve the problem?
    Many thanks,
    Sean

If you are running 10.6 (using a 10.6 install disk) then USB hard drives should be visible.  I'm getting a little suspicious of this enclosure you are using.
Do you have a different USB hard drive (or firewire would be even better) we can test with to see if it is detected in disk utility when booted to the install disk?
I haven't used SuperDuper but to use disk utility to image / clone / restore a drive from another drive, when one of them is your boot volume, you do so while booted to the install disk.  So if the enclosure does not show up in disk utility when boot to the install disk you won't be able to accomplish a clone.
We can still bring your files over, but non-Apple applications would have to be reinstalled from their original source (online, DMGs, install disks, etc.)

  • Burn to Disk/save to disk image

A short answer is fine if you can send me to where i can find the explanation of what exactly these are are how to do it. Is it MAC 101? I am new to mac
I have been using the same ol movie to experiment with and see what i can do.
I tried to burn the project to disk and it says its too large..I have nothing in the trash. In Finder and (command i) on the star it says its 13.21gb's
In Finder and QT FQ it says 9.84 gb"s
I only see a burn to disk in i Movie
I don't see an option of saving to disk image but have seen a post where it was being done,it may be the same thing.
I though I would be able to save the movie as just data using very small bytes
without loosing quality. Am I even in the right ballpark here?
    thank you

My movie is filmed using the HC3 Sony HD .. Its about 25 min long .I have done everything using HQ when asked , so far with the movie.
I have burned to dvd in iDVD, no problems( other than the time to encode the audio)...lost some quality there in i DVD, but I understand that..Its not burnung to High Def .
I have shared it back to the camera with excellent result. seems like no loss of quality there. Looks great on the HD tv.
I have shared it to Quick Time and viewed it on My PC . Looks good there also.
I have shared it to ITunes and viewed it in iTunes, looks great, but so far unable to put it on an iPod. I have that 60gb ipod that plays music videos and has the movie capabilities.
I saw in iMovie under the dropdown menu under file it has BURN TO DISK
Thats what I tried when it said it was too large..so whats that for?
I am now trying to share to iDVD and I see the> Save as disk image.
Now by doing that I will have saved the movie to a file that I can later use to burn another DVD? Just import it into i DVD and burn. Then it can be played on a dvd player? And I will have lost the capability to share it back to a camera for the high def?
If so I guess the advantage here is that mabey I could save multiple movies on a single disk being the size is so small . Is ther any other advantage...maybe shorter time to burn more of same movies at a later date?
    I think I may understand a... little ..
    Thanks VJK

  • How to see available space when burning a disk?

Please can someone tell me how I can see how much space is left on a blank disk when I am adding files to burn? In Windows there is a clear indication at the bottom of the screen showing how much space is left on the disk, so you can calculate which files/folders will fit into the space left. On my Mac there seems to be nothing - or at least nothing I can see in the Finder window - so how am I supposed to know when the disk is full or not? I usually end up putting too much on there & then it tells me once the burn process has started that there isn't enough space. This isn't very helpful or practical. Any advice appreciated....

Thanks BDAqua for reminding me to redownload Burn so I can use it on my new iMac.  Glad that it still works in ML.

  • Adobe Premier Elements 7- crash-when burning says" Please insert a blank disk" and already a disk in

I have a Adobe Premier Elements 7. I have had a lot of problems with it of crashing and not burning.. I just had my computer wiped out and installed everything back on like windows xp service pack 3..etc. First I have Windows XP service pack 3 with an Intel Core 2CPU ,6400 @213GHz, 2.13 GHz, 1.98 GB of RAM.  When I went into disk menus premier elements 7 crashes... why is that??? also I tried to burn a DVD and does the progress of burniing and almost done burning WHILE there is a dvd in the drive and says"Please insert a blank disk and click ok to burning" why doe sit do that also? I just had adobe reinstalled and my computer wiped out? Please respond and help.. I am using this program as a business of video editing and nee this solved.

Along with Steve's questions, let's talk about the process of Burning a DVD-Video.
From PrE, which is doing the authoring of the DVD-Video, the first thing that happens is a quick check of the Project and the Menu Set chosen. This happens in an instant. Next, the program must Transcode the Timeline to MPEG-2 that is fully DVD-compliant. This takes some time and is a very intensive process, stressing the computer, and also heating things up greatly. This process will often cause a poorly ventilated, or poorly cooled computer to crash with either a reboot, or a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). Every component, save for the video card, will be stressed like few other programs can do. PrE uses a 2-pass Transcode, where it goes through the entire Timeline, and maps out sections with high motion, or great detail. It builds a "script" on how to proceed, and then goes back at the Timeline with that script, but also still looking for ways to improve things. This is about 90% of the entire Burn Disc process. Nothing has yet to be burned. Instead, files are created in the Scratch Disk folders. Now, the program takes those newly created MPEG-2 files, the Menus, and all navigation such as Markers, and assembles them into another working folder, in the full DVD structure of VIDEO_TS folder with the IFO, BUP and VOB's. When this is done, the actual physical Burn starts. This is quite a ways into the total process. It is at this point, that the program looks at the burner and the blank media, and not before.
When the program cannot get the necessary info from the burner, or the blank media, it will throw an error message, similar to yours. Also, "SenseCode Errors" usually indicate a problem with the burner, or the media.
Now, let's address this last bit. Is the firmware for your burner up to date? If not, update/flash the firmware. This will be available from your burner mfgr's. Web site. Next, what brand of blank media are you using? Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the most recommended brands. Memorex, TDK, newer Ritek and all store brands should be avoided at all costs. Last, is your burner a fully-certified multi-drive? If so, it should be able to handle +R, or -R media. What type are you using, and are you sure that this is blank media, and not a disc that you have already burned, or even attempted to burn?
Hope that we can stop the crashes, and get you to burning.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Apple USB DVD burner ejects any blank disk

I have MacAir with OS Maveriks  10.9.1 and external Apple's USB DVD drive. The drive keeps ejecting any blank disk when inserted. Tried several. What is the problem? Both devices are 14 months old.
    Any help?

Ejects after several seconds then it a dirty laser diode lens
Ejects immediately then it's a damaged loader usually
Given its age, warranty work out of the question.  you may investigate the Ifixit.com videos on tearing down the ext superdrive for a lens cleaning or attempting same yourself without teardown.
I've fixed many myself, 9 times out of 10 its a dirty lens with dust.

  • Can't Burn Optical Disks on Powermac G5

I have two DVD drives on my PowerMac System - the original Pioneer drive in the tower and an external TDK drive (2004 vintage) that can be attached by either firewire or USB2. Neither drive will accept a DVD or CD to burn after installation of Tiger. Here's what happens:
When I insert the disk, I get a message that says:
"The disk cannot be used because it is not recognized."
If I go to the disk utility and request additional information, however, it clearly shows the drive, the media type (even though it does not show up on the desktop) and the media characteristics, e.g.:
    "Media is present: Yes
    Media is busy: No
    Media Type: DVD-RW
    Media is blank: Yes
Media is appendable: Yes." etc. etc.
This information is shown for both the internal Pioneer drive and the external TDK drive.
Finally, when I try to erase the drive in Disk Utility, I get the following message:
"Erase of optical media did not complete or completed with error."
    I have tried this with DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW media. Same results in every case.
HOWEVER: HERE'S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING: I can burn any supported optical disk on the internal drive of my MacBook Pro AND I can burn disks with the TDK drive attached to the MacBook Pro via USB2 but NOT attached via the Firewire port!!!! (The TDK drive will NOT burn on the PowerMac G5 regardless of how attached.)
Both optical drives were working on the PowerMac under Tiger and only stopped working after the Leopard install. Has anyone else had this burn problem on a PowerMac G5? I've found a few problems identified in this forum on reading installation disks, but few on burning CD/DVDs after installation. Is there a simple fix I'm not finding in the Leopard support resources or is this a significant bug in the 10.5 release?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

This gets more strange by the moment. Toast will see AND burn the blank DVD/CDs when inserted, at least when using the PowerMac's internal Pioneer burner. (I haven't tried it on the external TDK burner.) I changed DVD/CD System Preferences from "Show in Finder" to "Launch Toast Titanium" and had no problems. The application launched on DVD insert and did the data burn flawlessly, though a bit slower than I remember it being on Tiger.
But there is still this inconsistency between the PowerMac and the MacBook Pro. On the former, Leopard simply refuses to recognize any media placed in the internal burner, but on the MacBook Pro insertion of a DVD/CD functions just like Tiger used to - mounts the untitled media on the desktop, allows drag and drop file adds, and allows burning by OSX finder or menu. Has to be some strange bug in Leopard code for a PowerMac G5.

  • CD burning with disk utility - format and size for 800 MB - 90 minutes CD

    Hi Support,
I'm trying to burn a CD with 800 MB (90 minutes) using disk utility. When I create a new empty image I can select the size. Unfortunately there is no option for a 90 minutes CD. When I create the image with 800 MB and I try to burn it, disk utility tells me that the image is too big. So my first question is what is the maximum size for such a CD?
Next question, which format should I use? When creating a new empty image, I have the options "Beschreibbares Image" and "Mitwachsendes Image" (I have a Germann OS). But I dont't have the option to create a "CD/DVD Master", which is availabe, when I create an image from a folder. What I have to do, is to convert the image afterwards to a "CD/DVD Master". This is very circumstantial.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there an easier way o create an empty disk image for a CD/DVD?
    2. Is the format "CD/DVD Master" required to burn a CD. It is also possible to burn images with other formats. What is the advantage/disadvantage of this format?
    3. Which format is required to use the CD in a Windows computer or a standalone CD/DVD player? The volume format must probably "MS-DOS Filesystem" in this case?
    4. Is it possible to burn multi session CD's in this case?
    5. Is there a comprehensive documentation somewhere available for this burning issue on Mac? The help of disk utility is really not enough.
Thanks for answers and hints Thomas

    Hi thmayr!
Although the original instructions were for a 700 MB disc, perhaps the article linked to below, could be helpful.
From "Macworld" Feb 2005 issue p.90 Link To Article. Scroll to the second tip on the page: "Unix Tip of the Month: Utilize Extra Space on CD-Rs".
    Content:
Create a new folder in the Finder.
Drag everything you want to burn, up to 700 MB, into the folder.
Open Terminal and type cd ~/Desktop
Press the Enter key. This changes Terminal's active directory to your user's Desktop folder.
Type hdiutil makehybrid -o myburn.iso (There's a space after the o in iso, and myburn can be any name you choose) DON'T press Enter
    Switch to the "Finder"
Drag & drop the folder you created onto the Terminal window. Terminal should fill in the full path to the folder.
Press Enter. Enter key will then execute the command.
What you have done is used the hdiutil Unix command to create a hybrid disk image named myburn.iso (you can choose whatever name you like, in place of myburn, but use iso for the extension.
You should see the message "Creating hybrid image" in your Terminal window, as well as an indication of the task's progress.
When finished, you should see a disk image called myburn.iso on your Desktop.
You can use Disk Utility to burn this image, or you can type
    hdiutil burn ~/Desktop/myburn.iso in Terminal
Insert a blank CD-R when prompted, and then just wait until it's done.

  • Can't delete a logical volume group created from a blank disk image

    Hi all,
I'm a recent convert from Windows, so do bear with me while I grapple with all the new terminology.
Basically, here's the problem: I've been trying to create an encrypted drive and have been at it for a few hours now. I ended up with two 'logical volume groups' created from blank disk images, neither of which are password-protected, and one of which I quite stupidly named "hidden folder" and can't rename now. Anyways, I decided to throw it all away and start right from scratch, but now disk utility won't let me delete these two logical volume groups despite me dismounting both devices, trying to trash the containing folder, etc. Some searching about online has gotten me into the belief that there should be an 'erase' tab in the disk utility window which is not showing up when I click on those drives (however, the erase tab does appear when I click on the indented partitions on each drive). Here's a screenshot to give you guys an idea:
-Here's the disk utility window. The two drives I'm trying to get rid of are "Hidden Folder" and "HD2"
-Here's what I suppose would be called the 'containing folder' in which both drives reside
-And finally my setup, just in case it's relevant
Oh and btw this would be my first post here! How exciting
    Thanks in advance,
    Arthur

That is as it should be. If you select "Move to Trash" does it move the folders to the trash? If so, do the following from my previous post:
    tjk wrote:
    1. Open Terminal (in Applications, Utilities).
    2. Copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window (or type it exactly as follows):
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
    3. Press Return.
    4. Type in your password when asked (note: you will not see anything being entered as you type your password).
    5. Hit Return.
    6. Wait until the process finishes/the Terminal prompt returns.
    7. Quit Terminal.
I wonder if I need to do some changes to the rights about doing this action "move to trash"?
Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.
this is making me very uncomfortable, I know myself to solve any problems I tackle/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png Something so simple as this is making me crazy
I don't know if it would make me any crazier than I am, but I sure wouldn't want a stray folder just hanging around on my desktop either.

  • Can't burn blank CD after installing CD that came with ipod nano

Can't burn blank CD after installing ipod software - I have the system prefs set to launch Toast 6 when inserting a blank disk, and the drive just churns and then ejects the CD. It mounts and runs burned music and data disks with no problem.
My job requires me to burn data disks from pictures I take at work. Should I re-install Toast? The OS? I ran Disk Utility to check/fix permissions, and no change.

The CD that came with the nano won't have anything on it that you won't get with a full iTunes install. In fact, it may have been an OLDER version of the iTunes software than what you had installed before.
I'd reccomend downloading the latest version of iTunes from Apple and installing that to rule out software reversion issues.
If the problem still exists, try booting into toast before inserting the blank disk and see if Toast can still burn to the CD. If it can, then odds are you have to re-instruct your computer to boot toast when a blank CD is inserted. If it can't see the blank CD, or the Finder spits it out again, then I think you'd have to re-install Toast.

  • Photo CD, registers as blank disk?

hi, i have a dvd full of photos that i recently took, when i put it into a windows computer, they come up and i can view them,  but when i put the cd into my macbook, it comes up as a blank disk and i can not see my photos, i need the photos on the macbook rather than the windows computer, but it will take a long time to try and transfer them as there is about 500 and the bluetooth transfer does not seem to want to work, which means using emails!
is there any way i can easily and quickly open the photos on my macbook? any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks,
    Toria

If you burned the DVD on the Wiindoze PC, you probably didn't finalize or close the disc after burning. That makes it unreadable on a Mac.
Copy the photos from the PC to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, then move the storage device to your Mac and copy them from it to the Mac's hard drive.
