My microphone has stopped working

Any suggestions

If no change after the standard troubleshooting steps - powering the iPhone off and on, a reset, restoring the iPhone from the iPhone's backup, and restoring the iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

  • My microphone has stopped working on my ipad 2 16GB 3G.  How do I get it to start working again?

I am not sure when it happened but my microphone has stopped working on my ipad 2.  I downloaded an application from the App Store called Starmaker for my daughter.  When she tried to follow the start up instructions, she could not make a demo recording as there is no sound.
My daughter and I have used the recording/sound facility before as, when away from, I have used Skype and my daughter has used the talking animal apps.
I have tried a hard reset and tried to clear the microphone by blowing on it and using the hoover attachment to clear it but unfortunately there has been no difference.
I would be grateful for any advice you have to clear this problem, so I can have the full use of my ipad again.
    Thank you.

If you have a passcode on the device and you don't know it, then thats another issue. For that, the ipad will need to be restored. This may or may not also resolve your mic issue.
You didn't say wether or not the mic fails with just this one app, or with facetime and skype as well.
Try this audio recording app if needed to test further

I'd stay away from using anything like a vaccuum on the ipad, but clean air might work
Try backing up the ipad to both icloud and itunes first.

  • I've had my iPod 5th gen for a few months now and out of nowhere the microphone has stopped working.

I've had my iPod 5th gen for a few months now and out of nowhere the microphone has stopped working. It won't pick up anything, I can't use it for recording, face time, siri or anything else. Every time I try and record and play it back its just all fuzzy, is there anyway of fixing it without having to send it off for repair?

    - Make sure the mic hole is clear and unobstructed. It is the little hole on the back by the camera lens(if has back camera). For the 16 GB one without the back camera the mic hole is on the tope edge near the center.
    - Open the Voice Memos app and see if you see movement on the VU meter needle with changes in noise level trying to be recorded.
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
You can also send it to Apple.

  • I have updated with os X 10.10.2 and my built in microphone has stopped working. need immediate solution for this.

Currently I own 13.5" Macbook Air (mid 2012) with OS X 10.10.2 running on it. Ever since I upgraded to it, the built-in microphone has stopped working.
I made Facetime calls but my voice was not able to transfer/hear on the other side. Moreover i tried checking the "Sound Input levels" in the System Preferences and they all are perfect. When i speak the volume recognition bars does not show any movement or change, indicating no Input Volume.
Kindly look into this matter and take necessary steps to resolve this issue.

To add to David Woods comment, make sure your Audio MIDI app is running the latest 4.3.0 found in  Audio MIDI>Preferences> info>Core Audio Framework 4,3.0

  • Microphone has stopped working in apps

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 4S and the microphone has stopped working in my apps, such as snapchat, when takign a video in the camera, instagram etc. I've just looked in the microphone settings and all of those apps have permission to use the microphone. The strange thing, though, is that it works when I make a phonecall (people can hear me) and Siri also understands me! I have tried switching the phone on and off again.
    Thanks

    Hi wheelybin92,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The iPhone 4S has two microphones, so the one used on phone calls may be working fine, but it sounds like the other microphone is no longer working. Take a look at this article for troubleshooting steps that can help:

  • Microphone has stopped working since upgrade

Microphone doesn't work since os upgrade. It will work, though, when my earphones are plugged in. Any ideas?

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • Satellite P200 - Microphone has stopped working after Windows 7 install

My Satellite P200 came with Vista Ultimate, the mic worked for a few months suddenly it stopped. I decided to install Windows 7, but mic still does not work.
    Any ideas anyone?
I use this laptop to skpe my folks a lot. I can use an external mic fine, but really want my inbuilt one working again.

    Hi buddy,
Sounds like its something wrong with your Windows 7 installation if the microphone doesnt work anymore...
I would recommend updating the webcam driver because the microphone is a part of it. You can find driver updates here:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
I dont know what Satellite P200 you have exactly but if you cant find a Windows 7 driver for webcam, choose another model that is fully Windows 7 supported, e. g. Satellite P300.

    Please Help

    Hi
Usually notebook power off automatically due to high temperature.
Clean the ventilators using the compressed air spray if this does not help, reinstall the OS using recover disk in order to check if the issue is not related to the system problems
    >i cant find it in the device manager to uninstall the driver or is there another way?
The webcam software can be uninstalled in control panel -> software
You can also install the freeware software like CCLeaner which helps to uninstall the software from the system. But notebook recovering should fix the webcam issue too.

  • My microphone has stopped working for messages.

It seems to work fine for everything else.  The microphone icon does not seem to be illuminated on the keyboard anymore.

    Try restarting your iPhone.
Are you able to use Siri when this happens? If one is down, they should both be down. The tips in this Apple doc should help too -> iOS: Troubleshooting Siri

  • My microphone has stopped working for Siri, loudspeaker calls and FaceTime but I have apps that require a microphone that still work fine

Hi recently when using Siri, loudspeaker on calls and face time my mic has not been working. It is working fine on normal calls and on apps that I use to record with please can someone help resolve this issue

I'm having the same problem, and nobody on here seems to have a solution. If I do a factory restore, it works for a few weeks, but then the same problem creeps up again.

  • Microphone has stopped working

I bought my ibook in September (this is also my first Mac) and all was good but have realised that there seems to be a problem with the internal microphone. If I turn on the speech recognition only one bar of blue appears no matter how much noise I make. I checked the CALIBRATE section and no matter how high I set it I never get more than a bit of blue. I have also checked the settings in sound, and have moved the input level up and down....
Am I doing something wrong or is there actually something wrong?
    Any help much appreciated. Cheers!

Have you tried repairing permissions (using disk utility)? Also, do you have Speakable Items turned on?
Other than that, I would make sure the input volume is set to maximum.
