My Mini won't reboot! Please help!

This morning my Mac Mini was working fine.
I left it on. Went for a walk. Came back and it was acting a little funky, i.e. apps wouldn't start. I tried to logon but it froze, so I turned it off.
Now it doesn't reboot.
I ran the disk repair utility from the installation CD and it came back with no errors. Well, actually it fixed a couple. The only thing that is left for me to do is to install and archive. But wait! I can't do that because I don't have enough disk space. Not only that, it won't install onto my firewire drive because it thinks it can't reboot from it.
What am I supposed to do now ? I have some valuable stuff on that Mac.
I tried booting into single-user mode.
The last message I get is:
CSRHIDTransitionDriver::stop
and it hangs on that. The fan turns on and it stays that way till I restart.
Any ideas (other than buying a new computer) ? BTW, my AppleCare account expired so I can't call them anymore.
Any ideas ?

If Tiger were 'crap' everyone would have exactly the same problem you are having. Clearly that isn't the issue.
It's understandable to get frustrated and need to rant - we would pretty much all have the same reaction, but it doesn't help troubleshoot the problem!
It seems to me that since you have had errors with the hard drive, that drive is the most likely culprit in terms of the problems you now face. It may be that SMART reports verified, but that doesn't mean the data is good, just that the drive is connected, communicating and readable.
PPC7410 is right that there is rarely any need to reinstall MacOS, and certainly not with any regularity, but there is a possibility that your MacOS install has been corrupted partially by the drive errors you had previously, and that even though the errors were fixed by Disk Utilities in as far as the directory structure corrected, it may be that data had overwritten some MacOS code prior to the fix.
What I would do in this situation is disconnect the external drive, then boot up the mini from the original install disk (holding down the 'c' key while starting up), and do a full 'erase and install'. This reformats the hard drive and places a new copy of MacOS on it. Of course the reformat will cause all existing data to be lost, so if there is anything currently on that drive make sure that you've copied it to the external before you do this. DO NOT bother trying to save off any software or MacOS components, since these might be damaged and trying to copy them back may well result in further problems as a result.
Once the erase and install is done, set up your user account again, and copy back your data from the external. This will ensure that you have the best chance of recovering your mini with a clean, working copy of MacOS and with low risk that you might inadvertently reintroduce problems when you copy back your data.

Apple says that the Mac was supposed to be erased and taken back to the most recent version of OS X with which it shipped. You should not have any of the previous owner's apps. That violates the Terms of Use for Mac App Store apps.

I would restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod on your computer and start over. It appears the iPod is associated with another account.  Any media that came with the iPod does not belong to you and di not transfer with the iPod hardware.

  • Mac mini g4 power pc won't download  please help I'm new mac

I have used Mac mini g4 2005 run Mac os x 10.3.7 but I can't Download. I don't know why is my forts Mac  and I think sale because I don't know how download  and also won't open YouTube too  please help thanks how configure please thanks

    Thanks for the suggestions.
I did try the DIMMs one at a time, plus in pairs, and no luck.
But I think you were on to something about trying a different CD. I don't have the System CD for this machine, nor do I have a System 9 CD. I had tried an OS X 10.3 installation CD and a Disk Warrior CD, but those wouldn't work. I did find an Apple Extended Care CD (which had a version of TechTools on it) that I got with my Powerbook, and lo and behold, the G4 started up off of that! So I turned off the machine, connected the hard drive again and restarted. It booted up off the hard drive and I was able to connect to the network and everything.
But then I got greedy. I thought whatever was wrong was now magically fixed (magic being my most relied upon Apple repair tool) and popped all the RAM back in. Turned it on, kernel panic. Darn. Took the RAM back out, turned it on, kernel panic. Uh-oh. So I put the RAM back in and tried to start it off the Extended Care CD again. It started up OK from the CD. Then I tried to boot from the hard disk again, and it booted up just fine, no problems at all. I had to reset the clock, but everything works.
So I still don't know what's going on with the machine. Maybe it was the battery after all, but it couldn't boot until something was reset. It's a mystery, I guess.

  • Help! My Mac mini won't reboot

Hi. I posted yesterday (in the Safari forum) concerning a problem I was having with Safari 3.0.4 after updating to 10.4.11. Basically, it wouldn't run. Anyway, I did a bunch of searches on the Web (including this forum) to try to figure out what to do. One piece of advice was to move System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.frameworkapplicationservices.fram ework to the desktop.
Well, I did that, and things started acting weird. I tried to copy it back, but the process just seemed to hang. So, I did what I thought was obvious but was apparently a bad idea: I rebooted. Guess what--now my Mac won't reboot. I just get a perpetual hourglass.
I tried doing repairs with Disk Utility, but that didn't fix the problem. I also did a superfluous Hardware Check from the same OS disk, and that turned out normal.
So, what's the solution? A visit to my friendly Apple dealer for some service? Or am I just permanently hosed with no recourse? Please let me know what I can do. Thanks!

Sadly Apple stores are rarely set up for the purpose of completing backups and securing data, so that's not something you can rely on them to do. Some Apple approved service providers are better equipped for doing this, but in the end, it's not a good (or comfortable) proposition to trust your data to anyone else, and the more important that data, the less good, (or comfortable) it is if you have to.
The risk of data loss is relatively small in this situation - particularly if you ran 'repair disk' from disk utility and it reported no errors. That generally would indicate the drive is healthy and there are no indications of damaged data or file structures. Still there is always a risk!
In your situation, if I were faced with the knowledge that I was going to be buying an external drive for future backups, I'd be inclined to buy it now (selecting a firewire-connected hard drive of at least the same, if not much larger capacity than the internal), and then run Disk Utility again, this time (carefully) selecting the external drive, partitioning it under the Apple scheme, then formatting it (MacOS Extended (journaled) and then installing MacOS on it from your 10.3 installer. After that, I'd boot to it by holding down the option key during startup, then selecting the external drive from the list that (after a couple of minutes) should appear. Then the internal drive will be mounted on the desktop under the external which has booted the system. That will give you to option to copy your iPhoto and iTunes libraries to the external drive, and thus secure your data.
Once that's done, you can reboot to the install disk and basically even erase and install, because your data is safe on the external drive!
After the internal is set up again, and fully updated, it then becomes a simple matter of moving your data back to it, and then erasing the external once more, and setting up your backups with SuperDuper! or CCC.
It might sound like a bit of messing about, but that would keep your data safe in your own hands!

  • Help my IPOD won't start PLEASE HELP

It gives me the apple screen and then switches into the foloer with an exclamation point and i don't know how to get it out. I have tried restarting, and plugging it into the computer doesn't do anything. It is charged, please help.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Automatic Update Won't Work, Please Help!

Please help. I have the new 5G iPod and it has kinda been working fine for me. Everytime I go to plug it into my computer, the automatic udate won't start. The little iPod icon in the corner won't show up and when I go to pref. and click on iPod it says there is no iPod connected. I tried to restart the computer and iPod and plug it into a different USB port but still nothing works. I know I have new songs on there that I want to update on but the "Do not disconect" screen won't even come up. Any help would be great, thanks! =)

    Try this:
Create a new user and make sure it is an Administrator account. Download and install iTunes.
If it installs properly, log out and then back in as you.
Uninstall iTunes using the method in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Then install from the link in my previous post:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1615
Have you been having problems with your laptop before this?
You can always try a system restore too if the above steps don't work.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > Next > pick a restore point (you will get later dates if you check the "Show more restore points" box) I would go back at least a couple days > Next > Finish. It may take a while then it will reboot. On reboot it will finish the restore so it may take longer than normal to boot. This will not change any of personal files, only system and program files.

I have installed and uninstalled Itunes about 10 times, everytime it install ok but does not open when I click on the icon. The itunes.exe file opens in task manager for a few seconds then closes. I have tries msconfig but can't find any of the programs which have affected other users. I have tried creati9ng another user account for windows but Itunes still won't open. Can anyone please help. My computer is Windows 7 32 bit. Thank in advance.

No, the program I installed was Winavi MP4 which coverts video to ipod psp format etc.
Ack, that one's just as bad. It's been causing this sort of grief for iTunes users for over five years now.
What it has probably done here is drop old versions of QuickTime componentry in unorthodox locations on the PC (usually down in your operating system files). So we're going to go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Open.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • Older mac mini won't reboot from Install DVD?

I've passed on my 2006 era mac mini to my daughter.  We can't seem to get to a factory settings because it won't reboot from the install DVD.  It keeps cycling through to the normal reboot.

    Could be damaged disks.
    BestBuy sells disk repair kits.
But for about the same price as disk repair kit, you could call 1-800-676-2775 and give them the unit serial number and pay shipping/handling fee for replacement.
    Assuming it is bad disks.
