My mini won't shut down
when i try to shut down my mini, it keeps running. it gets to the point of logging out and i can see just the plain desktop picture. the fan is going, the monitor is on. it won't actually turn off. i've waited for 30 minutes. finally, i'll just unplug it (probably not good.)
any suggestions?
thank you.
Usually if the system refuses to shut down it's because a process is running that it can't force-quit, often related to an external device, but sometimes an installed application attempting to communicate.
Often the only way to resolve this is to power down by pressing and holding the power button for 5-10 seconds. This is not an elegant shutdown, particularly if the system is attempting to write to the hard drive in the hung activity, so on the next reboot, it is wise to run Disk Utility to verify the internal hard drive and ensure it hasn't developed a problem.
There's no simple way to troubleshoot this sort of problem since the devices connected to the system and the software in use all vary from system to system, but it's best to start by disconnecting all external devices other than keyboard mouse and screen and booting the system, then trying to shut down again before running any application. If that works fine, then it's a problem in an app or driver or external device. If not, it's in MacOS or hardware.
If the latter, it's probably a good starting point to repair permissions using Disk Utility, though sometimes a little more drastic spring-cleaning is needed using one of the general purpose utilities such as OnyX or YASU (YASU being my favorite for simplicity of use and the lack of options that can do more harm than good). Running all YASU tasks can help a range of behavioral problems. Another good utility to have on hand for these type of problems is Preferential Treatment, which can be run on both system and user levels to find damaged or corrupt properly list (plist) files which can also cause unpredictable behavior.
If the former, then it would help to know what devices and software you are using, but troubleshooting would typically need each to be connected/used individually to see at what point the system then began to have problems again.

My Mac Mini Won't Shut Down Properly
I recently upgraded to 10.6.2 after buying a mac wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Now I keep getting this problem where the OS won't shut down.
One of the symptoms is that when I move the mouse to the area at the top right of the screen with the clock, volume and wifi icons (is there a name for that?) I just get a spinning beach ball. The clock has stopped too! Also the volume controls from the keyboard don't work any more, even the remote control stops working. I can't shut down or sleep the computer, even 'about my mac' doesn't work.
Other applications seem to work OK and in Activity Monitor I don't see any unresponsive apps.
This hanging doesn't start straight away and two things that have set it off have been using the volume controls and when I tried to press ⌘-space to search for something.
I really don't know where to begin!
Message was edited by: beardieblokeStill doing it! I disconnected all the USB peripherals and that was fine for a while, also removed stuff out of the task bar thing that I wasn't using.
Then re-connected the USB hub and it happened again... maybe it's something to do with that or just bad luck... -
Mini 2009 won't shut down and others....
My hard disk crashed down, I changed it and re-installed from Time Machine. Now my mini won't shut down (among other things) just restart. I think, I broke something inside, because I can't re-install from App Store (unfit check sum). Here is the fault log, any help?

Mini Mac won't shut down!
Core Duo won't shut down or log out or re-start but can sleep. Can use terminal to kill processes but it is not an application causing the problem. The output is to a TV via S-Video and am using wireless keyboard via USB.
Appreciate any suggestions.hello to the mac world
@sunra
same problem here on my mini mac, intel solo core, happens 3 times in one week now.
it seems that my mini ignores shutdown, restart and log out.
when I terminate the task "login window" then he jumps to the login screen, where I can shutdown or change the user.
anyone an idea about this little problem?
okay, it is not a big problem and with this problem I feel already home now...yes, I used windows the last years

PS cs3 and Illustrator cs3 won't shut down
I have these apps intalled on two other win 7 x64 computers with
out any problem but on this win 7 x64 system both ps cs3 and illustrator cs3 hang up when I try to close them. It is a little intermittent on illustrator and at least once it has closed properly but most of the time it takes about 2-5 mins to shut down or it won't shut down at all.
Photoshop is worse and always either takes 3-5 mins if it does shut down but in most cases it will not shut down and I have to force quit the application. Any suggestions please.Security settings for the Adobe licensing service or something liek that, possibly Version Cue! Run as admin to diagnose, then manually configure the services...

In Finder I scroll to shut down. The icons disappear but the computer won't shut down. I had to do a hard shut down. When I turned it back on, nothing had changed.. I am able to find the finder in the the dock. So, how do I get my computer to turn off? Thanks.
I was having a similar problem with mine, and I found out it was caused by a corrupt plist file from migrating old files over from my previous Mac. Specifically, the com.apple.loginitems.plist and com.apple.loginwindow.plist files.
Once I trashed them and restarted, everything worked just fine. -
HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
Thank you everyone!!I have this question too.

External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11
i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
thanksSome hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

I had a disk error with a SD disk from my camera. Removed the disk from the card reader and got the Disk Removal Error alert. Then the whole thing froze up on me. Noting else would eject, No other apps would shut down and basically nothing worked. I couldn't shut down so I removed the battery. Restarted the computer ok then tried to repair the SD disk in question. No luck on the repair so ejected it again. Then tried to restart OS and it won't shut down again except everything still works but it just won't shut down.

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
Thanks.Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime

Help, my mini REFUSES to shut down/restart
Hey guys.
I'm looking for some help figuring out what is making my mini hang on shut down.
My icons all dissappear and then I just see the osx backdrop. From there the system refuses to take any keyboard input, though I can move the mouse around. It will just stay there untill I hold the back power button down long enough to force a shutdown. When I reboot it says osx shut down unexpectedly. I try to look at the log by clicking on that option but the log never shows up. My mini is two weeks old and running Tiger.
Thanks for any help,
KalAll the icons dissappear but the normal apple backscreen stays. It never gets to a black screen. No the pinwheel is not spinning. I no longer have any usb devices plugged in. I have a g4 1.42 mac mini. I did not import any data from a previous system.
I have tried to reinstall osx but due to it not being able to restart it will not complete he install. I have left it on the screen for hours to see if anything would happen, but nothing.
I think I may just return it and get another. It just seems too new to be having such a problem. I have put very little software on and it is all mainstream software that should have no problems.
Thanks for the help guys. If there is anything you guys can think of that
I may do please let me know.

OS won't shut down - spinner goes around and around
For the last month or so my Mini will not shut down (or restart). I am on the latest rev. of SL (10.6.8). It gets to the blue screen and then the spinning wheel goes around and around until I have to turn it off by the power button.
I found much older thread (now archived) that suggested that this spinning wheel on shutdown has something to do with power management settings.
I have done the typical steps of repairing permissions and (from the Install CD) running Disk Utility, which reported no problems. I also trashed the com.apple.powermanagement.plist file, which is what seemed to fix things in that earlier (2009) discussion.
I have the same rev. of SL running on my MacBookAir, which is having no problems doing a shut down (or restart).
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Are you using any Font Management software or Adobe Creative Suite software?
Nope. I do have some Macromedia (now Adobe) software -- Fireworks and Dreamweaver. But, actually, I don't think I've fired those up on the Mini in months. I use them on the MBAir and it's not experiencing problems shutting down.
Are you running Time Machine?
Nope again. I run SuperDuper for scheduled backups -- have been doing that for years.
But this is related to where I started noticing the problem. I have SD set to run around midnight and it was set to do a restart when it completes. I started to notice that the system would be in this "hanging" mode when I'd check in the morning. I had thought it was a conflict with EyeTV (which is about all I use the Mini for these days). If I run SD and then have EyeTV try to start recording without a restart, EyeTV throws up. So I then had a system restart scheduled to run at 3:15 a.m., between the SD backup's end and the start of EyeTV's daily recording routine. However, since this problem has started I am getting up at 4 a.m. to "push the button" to do a manual shutdown and restart.
It was suggested that I note the time of the shutdown, do a shutdown, force it to power off, and then check the system log. I did the latest shutdown at 2:19 (14:19) and here is the end of that log. Problem is, I don't really know what it's telling me. I haven't run Parallels on this machine for some time now. And Virtual PC (if that is referring to the very old old package and not something that's part of Parallels) is not supposed to even be on this machine -- it was on my earlier G4.

Ipad mini keeps unexpectedly shutting down
New (two months) ipad mini is constantly shutting down and reverting to black screen while in use; is also frequently dropping wi-fi connection. The problem doesn't seem connected to a specific app or function, and other ipads in the house don't have the same shut down/wi-fi connection problem. Any tips?
Then there is a bigger glitch. Your only other option seems to be restoring your iPad.

I got a iPod nano about a month ago, and installed iTunes on my PC. All is well so far... until I try to shut down. The computer restarts instead. After installing and unistalling iTunes from the cd and apple.com nothing changes. I've tried shuting down all iPod and iTunes related processes in the task manager before shutting down, but the result is always the same.
Called Apple help, and they've never heard of this problem.
Can someone help? I like iTunes to much to give up on this one.

Trondheim, NorwayWhat makes you think iTunes is causing this?
Are you getting some kind of error? Have you looked in your application & system event viewer logs?
I mean, if you've shut down iTunes & iPod processes in task manager, and Windows still won't shut down.....why would iTunes be causing this? -
Root.sh fails - asm won't shut down
I am trying to instal clusterware 11gR2 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5. This is all running an Oracle Virtualbox environment, using ASM for the cluster disk in an openfiler. 32 bit installation, 1GB memory allocated to each node environment. I had to ignore errors for the following:
< 1.5 GB memory
small swap file
ncsd and ntpd processes not running (not connected to internet), I understand Oracle will install it's own timer service if this is not present
Running root.sh fails because asm won't shut down properly:

Has anyone seen this before? All help greatly appreciated!Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for your quick reply. Here's what I tried:
1. reset the install as you suggested, and tried running root.sh again. The exact same thing happened.
2. restored to an openfiler snapshots that were taken right before the failed upgrade. Increased memory on both VMs to 1280M as you suggested. Rebooted the virtual environment and ran the installation again. This time, the root.sh script froze my environment - not enough memory to support this.
3. restored the openfiler snapshots again. Increased memory on one node (odbn1) to 1500M. Ran the install for a single node cluster. It got past this error.
Thank you!!!
Also, thanks for the tip on the ntp.init file. That did eliminate the error for ntpd not running during the installation.
