If it's runniong iOS 7 then when he left he left activation lock behind. Without hte proper credentials you cannot remove the apple id off the device if he turned on "Find my iPhone" via iCloud.

But when my iMac needs my Apple ID, it automatically pulls up my old Apple ID. How do I change this on my iMac (not the internet). I need to change it inside my settings or something so that my new Apple ID comes up when I need to authorize something on my iMac.

Go to the Apple and Open System Preferences
In System Preferences choose Users & Groups
If your lock is locked you will need to click on it and use your master password to unlock it.
Click on you (the user) and on the right side of the window, you will see Apple ID: ........................... and the button Change.
Choose Change
Use the + sign to put in a new apple ID and the - sign to remove an old unused one.

New to forums. Not entirely sure how this works. But, when I set up my iMac, I created one ID that is required every time I let the computer go idle or when I shut down the system. Now I want to change that ID. I tried by going into Settings and User/Groups and went through a process that looked like it would reset the password. But, when I reboot my Mac, the system takes me right in--right to the desktop. No ID or password required. Can you change your initial password?

To turn off automatic login you need to go to System Preferences->Users & Groups and select the Login Options located at the bottom of the user list.
In the window that opens is the setting to disable automatic login.

Yes, absolutely, you can still use the old ID to update, etc., but I understood the OP to want to simply discard the old one and use only the new one. Maybe I misunderstood...
And, actually just now re-reading the first post, it could be that the ID had only been associated with the iDevices, so if he established a new ID and associated that with the new MBP, I frankly have no idea if he can still use the old ID on that machine (based on him saying that the old ID is greyed out) - have not come up with this type of situation before.
