My Motherboard is dead :(

Hi guys:
i need an explanation for this....
i tryed to install a new optical drive on my G4 and when take out the IDE cable (of course the computer was shutdown and disconnected). installed the new one, and now my mac doesn't start up . The dimmer from the tower lights 3 seconds and thats it . Took it to MacOnline (is the authorized reseller of Apple) and they told me that the motherboard was dead.
Does anyone have any clue of what could happend?
Thanks !!!

If you tool the time to look, the OP hails from Chile - you know, that country in South America.. Does Mac-Pro do International shipments? What about duties and taxes? Currency exchange rates? All that is going to factor into the cost, if he can even get the part there.
And don't even think about chastising me about jumping to conclusions about anything, lest I start talking about your penchant for front panel boards...
Respectfully,
-Douggo

My HP g71 motherboard is dead.  I would like to get the files off the hard drive.  The G71 will not boot up at all.  No errors nothing but black screen.  If I take the hard drive out is there a caddy or holder that I can use to enable me to hook up to the hard drive to get my urgent files off of it.  Thanks

    Sure,
There are plenty of aftermarket hard disk enclosures or docking stations that you can use.The docking station is the easiest type. You don't even need to install the hard disk with a docking station. Connect the docking station to another PC plug in the mobile hard drive and retrieve you data. It is as simple as that. If you have a newer PC with USB 3.0 ports, be sure and purchase a USB 3.0 type for its higher data transfer speed.
Here is one example at NewEgg.com.

  • 2007 Macbook Pro 17" - Motherboard is Dead (Kernel Panic)

    Hi guys,
This is kind of frustrating as it seems like I now have to pay 5000 HKD to replace the entire motherboard after 2.5 years of usage.
I turned on the MBP the other day and got really intense flickering on the monitor, followed by scrambled video. After turning off the computer and re-booting, I get the dreaded Kernel Panic.
Investigation this issue leads me to an apple support notification that several 2007-2008 manufactured MBPs with an NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT M video card may cause this problem and that Apple will fix this free of charge.
No problem - I send this to my nearest Apple repair centre and they charge me 600 HKD to diagnose the problem, only to come back 2 days later and say that the MBP's motherboard needs to be replaced. After pleading with them that my MBP displayed classic signs of problems related to the GeForce 8600GT, they told me that it was the motherboard that was at fault.
I then asked them to issue a diagnostic report, and it was basically a company slip with typing on it reading "kenral panic cause by logic board defective, need to replace" (sorry for bad English, I'm translating word-for-word what was typed on the note).
Calling Apple directly and asking them about this issue resulted in them simply saying that if the repair centre believes its a motherboard failure, then I will have to pay the 5000 HKD to replace it.
I was HOPING that a "diagnostic report" would be a computer generated log which will show officially where the problem lies - and not my repair technician randomly writing down on a slip what he believes the problem is.
For those that have more knowledge of this, can anyone shed any light as to whether or not the video card could have made the motherboard defective? Or is this something that is not realistic?
Sorry to sound cheap, I understand a lot of people may be in my position and will have to pay, but I would like to explore all options before I pay 5000 HKD to replace a motherboard on a computer that I purchased on March 2008.
The only suggestion that Apple gave me was for me to take it to another appointed repair centre and get a second opinion. Of course, this will cost another 600 HKD just for them to look at.
Am I being unreasonable for asking all these questions and bothering Apple so much?

This is a user to user forum. All we can say is to bring a copy of the exchange/repair program documentation to the repair center and let them know that this has been covered free before.

  • Satellite A350D-203: How To Determine if Motherboard is Dead

My partner has had her Satellite for just over 2 years original Vista operating system & it has just died.
Symptoms are that when power button is pressed the button lights up & a click is heard which suggests that HD is attempting to boot/spin up but then no further sounds ... cooling fan does not start ... nothing displayed at all.
The power button can be switched off by pressing & holding it which suggests that unit must be monitoring ...
My partner recalls that prior to unit finally failing it used to get hot & shut itself down [again suggesting that overheat detection & shut down was functioning].
I don't believe the HD is faulty since a friend of my partner was able to back up data onto disks for her.
Can anyone suggest a logical process to follow?
If it subsequently transpires that the Motherboard is faulty, has anyone any experience of any basic visual examination/tasks that can be carried out ... i.e. re-soldering of known 'weak spots'/recognised component failures?
My apologies for asking such basic questions but the net is awash with 'experts' & conflicting information suggesting a range of faults from BIOS .... Motherboard.
PS: Although I am no PC expert I hold a degree in Electronic Engineering & am simply seeking some logical & credible advice before shelling out on a replacement Motherboard.

This does not mean that HDD is faulty.
If HDD would be faulty, you should see the Toshiba Splash Screen following by the message like PXE error or something like Bootmgr is missing, etc
But you should definitely see something on the screen
If this is not the case, an motherboard or an part on the motherboard like memory modules might be faulty.
You could try to test the notebook using new tested RAM modules but I think the best for you would be a short trip to an technician downtown who could run some hardware tests.

  • How can I get bookmarks from my laptop now that the motherboard is dead?

Laptop motherboard died - a friend transferred my files onto an external hard drive including my backed-up Firefox bookmarks, but (sadly) the last time I backed those up was 6 months ago. At least I have those on my new laptop now, but I'd *love* to get my most current bookmarks back - the ones I had on my laptop when the motherboard died. Is this possible, or are they gone forever? Thanks!

You will need to be able to access the files on the old hard drive, so hopefully your friend put that drive in a USB enclosure so you can still access the files on that old drive.

  • Satellite Pro C650 - motherboard is dead

    Hi
    1st post but here goes.
Owned Satellite Pro C650 for a year now and a wek ago just started smoking then went off.
I checked with my warranty & ran out on Sep 30.
Now my problem is i cannot seem to find info on the mobo that is inside.
I have not open or anything but where you put RAM chips you can see clearly a little square chip burnt.
So i would like to ask is this a common fault.
Also the model number of mobo so maybe i could get a replacement.
    Think thats all
    thanks for any replies

    Hi
    > I checked with my warranty & ran out on Sep 30.
This is really a bad luck Its pity that your warranty ran out just before the motherboard died.
It sounds like an overheating issue
What to say in your case the motherboard needs to be replaced and a new part could be ordered from Toshiba ASP in your country.
But new motherboard is expensiveits one of the expensive notebook parts beside the notebooks display so not sure if its worth to replace the mobo in your case
However, you can ask the ASP technician for a opinion maybe you could get an second hand part

  • My motherboard is dead ase to upgrade to the latest beta bios. MSI Z68 GD65 G3

    Good night.
Yesterday update the motherboard BIOS the 23.7 to 25.6 but had problems with overclocking and stability.
Update motherboard bios because with 23.7 mi new graphics card had no video signal.
Today I was recommended to update to a new beta bios, the latest for msi z68 GD65 G3 that could be better.
The process is completed perfectly with the forum tool.
Now comes on but restarts constantly. The second bios will not start either. No lights light and remove the memory but makes no noise.
Clear cmos, remove the battery, ... I have not earned at all.
    Any solutions?

have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?
have you tried to boot with 1 memory stick only?

  • Dead motherboard in Touchsmart IQ700

    Hi,
Got an HP Touchsmart IQ700, it's about two years old and it seems the motherboard is dead.  It's been sent away
to "PC World repairs" and it came back, they said they are unable to fix it as the can't get a motherboard.
Does anyone know what type (manufacturer/model) these boxes have in them.  I've tried to register this product with
HP but the "search for product" page appears to be broken or at least does not return anything for IQ700.
Does anyone know of any companies that would take this and fit a new board?
    Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to mine. I spoken to a few PC pro's, the only recommendation throw it away and buy a new one, the reason for the motherboard to fail is because of over the years of overheating. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and I suppose it has happened many others with the same or similar all in one IQ700 models.

  • Mysterious Macbook 1,1 -- working, then dead...then working again...???

I've got an extremely weird case on my hands. This is version 1,1 of the white Macbook (2006, I believe).
    Backstory/experiences so far:
I've been using Macs since 1990, and this is the first one I bought used. Might have been a mistake.
Everything was fine for a few months, until one day the computer was nonresponsive. No chime, no lights, nothing. The charge light on the magnetic power cable would light up and change from orange/green on a full charge, but that was it. Other than that, the computer behaved as if the battery had simply been removed.
Every time I walked by the laptop after that, I'd try the power button, just to see if it would turn on. A day or two later, it did. The little Macbook ran like nothing had ever been wrong.
A week later, something similar happened. This time, I heard the disk spin up, saw the power light come on, but never got to a chime. Later, an Apple Genius-bar-person would tell me that this means the initial system check failed. After turning it on, it acted like I had put it into hibernate. The only way to turn it off was to force-shutdown or let the battery die.
I sent it in to AppleCare, and they responded by telling me there was significant liquid damage which voided my warranty, and that I needed a new motherboard. Dead computer.
That was a year ago. I simply switched to using my desktop Mac, until...
A few weeks ago, I saw an ad for someone who fixes liquid spill apple laptops. He told me that often, the small power nodes (/chips?) on the motherboard short out, even though the board itself is fine. He replaced these, I paid him happily, and two days ago I had my little Macbook back.
I was able to use it like nothing had ever happened. About a week later, after a few hours of use in the morning, I powered the Macbook down and left the house. Three hours later, I tried to power it up again. Nothing. Totally unresponsive; back to paperweight mode. The battery lights on the battery case were active when it was plugged into AC, I should note.
I went back to my tried-and-true method of pressing the power button every time I walked by the Macbook. Six hours later, it worked again, suddenly powering up as if nothing had happened.
That was two weeks ago. Since then, it's often gone into paperweight mode, but it always comes back between 15 and 45 minutes later. Most recently, it's been turning on about 10 minutes after I hit the power key. It's hilarious...I try to turn it on, fail, yell and swear, and leave the room. 15 minutes later I hear a chime, and see that the little Macbook is booting up without help from any physical beings. I'm starting to believe in ghosts, guys...
I'm writing this on the Macbook in question, totally confused and completely afraid that it might never boot up again after I shut it down this time. Then again, it failed to start half an hour ago...but now, obviously, it's working fine.
Does anyone have an idea of just what the heck might be causing this? A loose wire inside? Evil spirits? Apple help in the store has been rather unhelpful (they didn't do much beyond chastising me for using an outside computer guy to replace the power chips...which worked great, by the way -- it eliminated the permanent-hibernation problem that killed the computer in 2007), and Apple on the phone have told me they deal mostly with software problems.
    A few more facts/Summary:
-I'm no computer expert, but the official Apple party line I've heard so far is that "it's corrosion/tertiary effects from a liquid spill." That doesn't sound likely to me. If it's a corroded wire or component, why has the Powerbook NEVER died while it was being used? It won't start when it doesn't feel like it, sure, but it's never died while I was using it.
-There seem to have been 2 problems, the first of which is fixed now...
    1. no startup chime followed by permanent hibernation. Replacing the power(chips? Nodes?) on the motherboard seemed to fix this "fail to finish booting" problem. This is NOT a problem anymore.
    2. The "play dead" problem, where hitting the i/o key won't do anything for a while, and then suddenly works. Sometimes the Macbook boots when I'm pushing the button, sometimes it ghost-boots while I'm in the other room. I have no idea what fixes the "play dead" problem, it just seems to go away after a few hours.
-The computer has never died while it was running. It's always after a perfectly normal (seeming) shutdown that it simply refuses to start back up again.
-I Don't fully trust the battery. The battery pretends to be full, but according to the little orange light on the AC power cable, is ALWAYS charging (even when the green LEDs on the bottom of the battery indicate "full"). The computer has not been able to boot on battery power alone (i.e. with the AC cable unplugged) in at least a week. I have it plugged in any time I boot successfully.
-The Apple-store guy (who seemed to know what he was talking about, but also seemed to hate me) checked the serial number on the Macbook, and confirmed that it's pretty much been a defective unit from the start. Since 2006, EVERY YEAR has seen a new logic board. That's 4 logic boards this computer has gone through, not to mention a new optical drive the first year, and several other major repairs. I had no idea that was the state of affairs when I bought it...frankly I'm amazed that Apple kept fixing this unit instead of confiscating it to figure out what is really causing all of these component failures.
I know this is a lot of information, but I'm trying to present the facts as I know them...I just have no idea which facts will be important, so you get all of them. Any help would be appreciated. I've tried googling around, but I'm not even sure what to search for. On an even sadder note, I spent 2 hours looking at non-Apple PCs last week (all I can afford if this one dies), and I really don't want to have to go down that road. Not after 20 years of faithful Apple/Macintosh usage.
Thanks in advance, and my apologies for the long post.
    -Dave

Important plot point here. I missed it on my first read through...

That computer is dead. You were ripped off. No other explanation for it.
-I'm no computer expert, but the official Apple party line I've heard so far is that "it's corrosion/tertiary effects from a liquid spill." That doesn't sound likely to me.
It is a moot point. Once it gets wet, all bets are off and no reputable repair person will touch it.

I'm sure he doesn't hate you. He just hates seeing unhappy customers that he can't help.

Well, you also know that the previous owner poured liquid in it. What else did they do to it before that wasn't so noticeable?
Just buy a new Mac. Get an official refurbished one even. That will still be better than the piece of junk you were sold before.

  • Lenovo B560 motherboard replacement

    Hi,
My dear laptop died on me about a month ago. It wouldn't do anything when pressing the power button and the power led would not light when connected to power. Tried with or without the battery, no led, no power. I checked with another cable and I checked my cable on another laptop and it worked so the issue has nothing to do with the power cable.
I took the laptop to my universities repair shop for a diagnosis and they said the Motherboard is dead.
Any suggestion where I could find a brand new motherboard replacement in the UK?

  • No Warranty for LCD Pixel dead for a new Laptop Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-EZ1523

    Hey,
I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-EZ1523 Laptop in Oct 2009. In January 2010 My motherboard went dead so I have sent the laptop to the Toshiba Depot Center initially they said they will repair it and send it within 3 - 5 Business day but they took nearly 15 days to ship it back.
Once I have received there is the big surprise. One of the pixel on my screen is dead and I tired calling the Toshiba customer care at 1-800-457-7777 and the transfer the call to Depot center which takes nearly 40 to 50 mins to get an engineer on the call for which we need so much of patients.
Today I requested to transfer the call to the Case Manager and when I told her about the problem she again tells me to call the depot and file a case with them and the UPS for the damage and she also mentioned that there is no warranty covered for the LCD Screen.
But when I shipped the laptop to the Toshiba Depot I don't had any dead pixels. Im tired calling Toshiba can anyone help me out.
    Regards,
    Prem.

I got problem with my Toshiba tecra A9 laptop. There is thick black line at the corner of LCD, I contacted 2 toshiba service centers but they paased me to the Toshiba support. They said that Toshiba will not pay us for LCD repair and asked me to call toshiba support and ask for their autorisation. I also called toshiba support several times, but they just make me confused. They said randomly some bizzare phrases: the service centers should aks us for autorisation no., LCD did not coverd by warranty, You made a physical damage, contact another service center, we will contact you within this business day...
The reason I have bought Tecra model was that toshiba called it as bussiness class, and offered a 3 years limited warranty!!! But the warranty is a whole fake to cheat with the clients. They even do not care about business and dont understand how our professional life is depends to our laptop. such a shame for them.
They pay some employees to talk with you several hours, just to deny their warranty and don't give you a good service!
I wonder how they calculate the repaire cost of LCD. I already find wensite which offer the LCD just for 95$. There are lots of replacement guide all over internet. I will suggest toshiba that I can service them for LCD replacement for as low as 150$. That would be a good business for me and a big deal for toshiba! At least Toshiba will not loose their clients.
From my side, I will start to aware all student around me at university to never trust Toshiba quality and warranty services and do not risk their professional life with the toshiba product and services! It seems that Dell is going to be the leader in customer services and hence in future market!

  • Will moving a dual 1.25 processor to a single 1.25 motherboard work?

I have a dual 1.25GHz MDD but suddenly it will not start. No lights and no fan at all. It's just dead.
I have replaced the power supply, but that did nothing. I am assuming that the motherboard is dead. I have a single processor 1.25GHz MDD that's working and noticed that the motherboards look identical.
My question is: Can I take the processor from the dual 1.25 and put it on the motherboard of the single processor machine? I guess, my concern is, do both machines use identical motherboards. If so, this should not be a problem, but before I do anything I want to find out for sure.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have the same issue, a suspect MDD2003 G4 MB. My wife yanked the ethernet port from the motherboard when she unknowingly tugged at the cable. The part number is 820-1476-A which is the same as the part number I see available for DP 867 units from before 2003 in several eBay auctions. Does anyone know if the 820-1476-A logic board is the 167MHz bus version? I have a secondhand DP 1.25MHz G4 I want to install but I am getting only power light and fan, no drive or chime on boot with my suspect 820-1476-A logic board...

  • Motherboard may have possibly burnt out

I have an HP Compaq Presario CQ50, my laptop has always had issues with screws falling out and such. last Saturday one fell inside, while I was getting ready to get it out I accidently turned on my laptop. It immediately started smoking and I held the button to turn it off, I had my laptop on for about a minute.
I then disassembled it to get the screw out and check for damage and clean out my fan...after all of that which took me all day I went to turn it on after reassembly and it wouldnt turn on...
I saw that the charger light comes on so it's charging, but it doesnt start at all no flashing lights or fans. I initially thought that I must have not assembled everything good enough specifically the power button ribbon. After disassmebling and reassembling 6 times nothing has changed. So Im guessing my motherboard is dead?
My laptop is about 4/5 years old, and while I was disassembly i noticed some of the wires were worn out and starting to become freyed so I would need a knew one soon, but Im in high school with no job and $200 dollars to my name so I was hoping to save this one until some buys me a knew laptop or I manage to scavenge enough money to buy myself one

Okay, screws don't just fall out in the passive voice. Someone has to unscrew them. And when a laptop smokes, it is fried. And I am also wondering how the wires inside got frayed all by themselves. At this point the only advice I can give is that you likely at least need a new motherboard.
