My mouse went crazy - really it was possessed . . .

anyway, I was looking for something on my harddrive and my mouse was highlighting stuff randomly and it moved stuff from one application to others willy nilly. I think it moved something major because when I went to retreive emails using Entourage, everything was gone and it was asking me if I wanted to run the set up assistant or whatever the thing is called that gets you started.
Here's my question, is there any way that go back and so that my system is restored to before the time my mouse went crazy? Please someone say there is.

Hello aarbelle
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sorry no one has come to your Aid but not sure what could be the problem accept for a mouse that is dying!
You stated that you cleaned out the lens and that's about all you can do.
Even though you cleaned the lens double check that there is not a hair or small piece of lint stuck between the plastic and blocking the laser.
You might try to take the batteries out let it sit a minute and then put them back in.
And reboot your Mac!

  • Yesterday, as today's deadline for filing tax returns approached, I was paralyzed by the inability to create new IRS PDF forms and to retrieve archived ones from a year ago. My computer went crazy. 24 hours later, I am still paralyzed. Can you help?

My computer went crazy yesterday on two occasions involving PDF documents. One dealt with attachments to an email from a bona fide corporation. The other dealt with IRS PDF forms & schedules needed for today's submission.
As both dealt with PDF and had nothing else in common, I suspected my PC had a virus. When I asked a local store technician, he agreed. I turned to Norton, which protects my PC from viruses, and after a few hours of really thorough searching, the computer was found to have no viruses.
Before describing what I call "crazy" computer behavior, you need to know that I have long had IE8 as my default browser but a few weeks ago switched to Mozilla Firefox because IE8 had beome incompatible with some websites from which I get information.
When I received the email from AT&T email service and clicked the first of four icons representing attachments, there was figuratively an explosion on my monitor: a series of new tabs, each called New Tab, burst onto the monitor--but no text or picture. The new tabs appeared faster than I coul kill them. I finally decided just to shut down the computer, hoping they would not reappear when I restarted. I was wrong. After 2 repeats, I decided to forget about the attachments and asked the sender to send them to me by regular mail.
That was no solution for my IRS PDFs. I wanted to complete filling in the various forms and schedules that I had begun months ago so that I could mail them today to the IRS (without having to copy them all in ink). When I tried to open the first one, BOOM. The same thing happened: the blizzard of New Tabs atop blank pages; my IRS form or schedule did not show up. Did the same shutdown/restart routine with the same results.
When I looked at the list of current forms that had to be completed, I noticed something very strange: the icons that began the listing of the documents' names were replaced one by one by Mozilla icons. When I moused over them, they said Firefox HTML. Why?
Starting the day today, I had the same experience. What's more, when I started to retrieve 2012 IRS PDFs from a year ago, the same New Tab tabs appeared and had to be killed, and Mozilla icons replaced whatever icon was there before.
Assuming that the problem arose with Adobe Reader's reading of the PDFs, I contacted Adobe but got no helpful phone number because PDFs are a free service and was directed to use this Forum to get help.
What do I have to do to (a) read and use PDFs in the normal way and (b) remove the Mozilla icon from those that have appeared on icon documents. If Mozilla is the source of the problem, shall I go back to IE8? (In my 80s, I want eventually to replace my old computer but for the time being I must continue using it. It will not take an IE9. Anther possible default browser would be Google Chrome, but I have unfavorable impressions of it because of its intrusiveness, loading my PC with stuff I do not need.
    Can you help?

The problem is absolutely not Reader. The problem is that FireFox has stepped in front of Reader and handles all the PDF stuff - wrongly in your case. FireFox is DESIGNED to take over PDF files. But it is not capable of doing IRS forms!
To start with go back to IE for these forms. When you save them to disk DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON THEM until this is fixed. Just open the in the normal way - start Adobe Reader and use Open from the File menu.

  • My MBP screen went crazy. Then I rebooted and it was fine.

    Setup:
    MacBook Pro (Late 2011 version)
    OS X 10.9.4
External power connected via Apple AC adapter
    Device Connections:
    - Display Port: 24" L-Inc monitor, via VGA adapter
    - USB:
         Port 1: Apple external keyboard
Port 2: 4-port USB hub with the following attached:
              Lilliput 7" mini-monitor (using 2 USB connections)
              Lenovo wireless mouse
              External hard drive
I was working on some code in TextWrangler, and as I was using Shift+up arrow to select some text (something I have done thousands of times before without incident), my external 24" monitor went completely blank, my Lilliput displayed a frozen desktop, and my MBP display showed blue with slightly darker blue vertical gradient lines.
After a few seconds ensuring that the computer was well and truly locked up and not accepting any input, I performed a hard reset on my computer.
When I performed the hard reset, the initial startup screen, which usually displays the Apple logo in the middle, looked like this:
The horizontal lines on the screen were actually on the screen; they're not an artifact from the photograph. The image in the center—which appeared to be the Apple logo, albeit highly distorted—was also flickering.
After a minute or two of that, the screen went completely gray and didn't do anything for about ten minutes. I heard no hard drive action either, but the cooling fan turned on after a couple of minutes.
So I performed another hard reset.
This time, the initial startup screen looked completely normal, and the computer booted up like it usually does. Thus far I have noticed no additional problems.
However, I'm concerned that the problem could recur, and it would be good to have some idea of what's going on so that if it's a problem I can fix without needing to take the computer in to the Genius Bar and lose the use of it for a week or more, I can just go ahead and take care of it. (I'm not overly concerned about data loss, as I am regularly backing up to an external HD through Time Machine, but would like my hardware to continue working for obvious reasons.)
Has anyone noticed symptoms like these before?

Reset the PRAM >  About NVRAM and PRAM
If that doesn't help, run the Apple Hardware Test >  Using Apple Hardware Test
It could be the graphics card which is not something you should try and repair or replace yourself as that may do more harm than good.

  • Mouse is crazy after installing Mavericks on a 2007 iMac

After upgrading to OSX Mavericks on a 2007 iMac, the mouse went out of control. I´ve been using a logitech wireless mouse that got stuck. I´ve changed to original iMac mouse but can´t control the device, that keep clicking by itself, toggling between screens. I´ve already made a recovery installation of OS with no results. System preference options also are helpless. I don´t know what to do to regain control over the mouse and the computer. Any suggestions?

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be applicable.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor in response to user input, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • I want to update my iTouch 4 to iOS 6, but I'm afraid I'll lose all the data on it. And when I went to iTunes, there was no button to back it up. HELP!!! :-o

I really don't want to lose the data but I really want to update. all my friends have updated. I DON'T WANT TO LOSE ANYTHING PLEEEEEASE HELP!!!
also, when I went to iTunes, there was no button for backup.
I also want to update because then i can iMessage with my frien

If you have everything already in iTunes and you have synced with iTunes at least twice (to assure you have backup) then you should not lose anything. Upon completion of the update you will have an option to restore the device from a backup.
But, the update process will erase everything until you restore your backup.

  • Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start (6) Office 2013

Ok this is just so annoying.
Whenever I try to open Word, it gives the error "Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start.(6)". Other office applications either freeze or crash. Only Excel works fine. Running Win7 64 bit.
Tried all possible ways of installation/reinstallation. Did repair, uninstalled and reinstalled manually, uninstalled with FixIt from Microsoft, removed every leftover thing from registry. Also removed some other applications that I thought could cause this
    problem for Office.
Uninstalled 64 bit Office, and installed 32 bit, same exact problems.
!!!Don't suggest me to run as administrator please!!!

    Hi,
According to your description, I suppose that Word 2013 was blocked by some other applications after you opening it.
Which operation system do you use?  Have you installed the Office 2013 SP1?
Then, we try to do some tests to narrow down the issue:
    1. Collect the Event log
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-information-event-logs-event-viewer#1TC=windows-7
    2. Use the
Process Monitor to collect the detailed information.
Open process monitor, and reproduce this issue, if there is any files or keys were blocked during the process. Please let me know,  and you could save as the file from process monitor, upload the file through One Drive and share the link to me. I'll
    analysis it.

  • Sorry, something went wrong and word was unable to start (2)

I have been using office home and student fine until now when it will not open, at first it would say it was unable to open with error message 40 now it is error message number 2, I have no idea how to open it.
    help please?

    Hi,
Is the complete error message "Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (40)" and “Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (2)”?
I agree with Sunil Shrikant Vyasasamudra. First you can repair Office from Control Panel > Programs and Features, maybe Office installation is corrupt.
If it doesn’t work, you can try “Fix it” tool in the KB below.

If there is anything else I can do for you on this matter, don't hesitate to tell me.

It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office

  • Sorry, something went wrong and word was unable to start (40)

so recently, my ms word has not been working at all. It doesn't work, whether I open a new document or an existing file, and it shows the error message 'sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (40). It only started to show up recently,
and i was wondering if it was because i have not yet updated to the latest version of Windows 8, which i have been unable to do successfully. I have already tried to open in safe mode, and the fix it tool. Does anyone have any idea what i can do?

    Did other programs work well?
Repair your Office suites in Control panel>Program and features>Office>Change>Repair
If the repair doesn't work, please uninstall the current installed Office, and reinstall it again.
To uninstall the Office, follow the instructions in the following support article:

moving to Logic Pro (back really I was a Logic user on PC)
What is the best amount of RAM to start with in the best chip pair arrangement?
As in 2 chips x 4 gig = 8 gigs total. would like to leave room to up grade so starting with either 8 or 12 gigs. Using Logic and Kontact sounds files.

    Hi
Indeed, early MacPros work best with RAM in matched pairs.... I had assumed that the OP was working with a MacPro post 2009, rather than a 2008 model
Perhaps these links will help clarify for the OP:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/MacPro_Early2008_MemoryDIMMDIY.pdf
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Mac_Pro_2009_2010_Memory_DIMMsDIY.pdf
    For 2009-2010 models:
    "Single-Processor Memory
For optimal memory bandwidth, all three memory channels should be used, and memory should be balanced across the three channels.
    Dual-Processor Memory
For optimal memory bandwidth, all six memory channels should be used, and memory should be balanced across the six channels.
Note: Populating slot 4 (or 8) slightly drops maximum memory bandwidth, but depending on the applications used, overall system performance may benefit from the larger amount of memory."

I am trying to open MS Word 2013. I have purchased the MS Office online and pay a subscription. When opening MS Word, it comes up with the error message "Sorry, something went wrong and word was unable to start. (6)" This appears to be happening
with all MS office applications. Can someone please help?

I faced this same problem and reinstalled office several times but no luck, then followed below steps and got my issue resolved:
Solution is that you run word in "Administrative" mode:
To run the Word program in administrator mode, try the step below:
    · go to Computer, Programs files/Program files X (86).
    · Look for Microsoft Office ->Office 15.
    · Look for Winword.exe
    · Right click on it and click
    Properties
    · Click on the Compatibility tab
and check the box forRun as admin.
    · Clickok.
