My MP3 player won't play MP4 files.

What can I do to get the itunes songs I purchased off my hard drive and on my MP3 player in the MP3 format?

The songs sold in the iTunes music store are not mp3s, they are protected AACs (i.e. "mp4's"). They will not directly play in your player. To get them into mp3, use iTunes to burn the purchased tracks to an audio CD, and then import the tracks from the CD using iTunes. Before you import, make sure your preferences have your import format set to mp3.

  • Front Row won't play .mp4 files

I just recently started using Front Row and, for some reason, it won't play .mp4 files. The said files are in my Movie folder and show up in Front Row's "Movies" menu, but when I try to play them it says "Selected video could not be played, format was not recognized."
    Please help!!

iTunes only supports MP4s encoded using the Main Profile, but many MP4s that you can download from the web are encoded using High Profile. These need to be converted.
You can use an app like VideoSpec or MediaInfo to list the encoding characteristics of your MP4s.

  • Quicktime Player won't play avi files all of a sudden

All of a sudden Quicktime Player won't play my avi files. They worked previously. I could play them with Quicktime 7 with or without Perian. I'm running 10.6.4.
They'll run fine on my MacBook and I don't have Perian installed on it.
    Any ideas?

I just uninstalled Flip4Mac and everything is working as it's supposed to. Very strange. Perhaps a conflict with Perian? But then again, QT didn't play the avi files with Perian installed. So, I guess the conflict is with Flip4Mac and something else.
    Thanks anyway

  • Quicktime player won't play avi files.

    Hi Guys,
My MacBook Pro is amazing and all but when I try to watch or open an .avi file it tells me this:
Yes I did click on the "Tell Me More" button and downloaded the Dvix Plugin but after all the trouble of downloading everything the .avi files still don't play...
    Please Guys help me out....
    Thanks,
    Lucas

It will be through VLC.  VLC is worth having as it enables you to play lots of media formats that are not otherwise supported on the Mac.

  • Windows media won't play mp4, audio no video

I upgraded from a desktop to the HP TouchSmart 15 TS Notebook PC so that I would have all the functionality
of a new operating system that would work. Guess I was mistaken?!?!?! I have the same problem I had with my old crappy desk-top, MP4 videos still don't play on Windows 8.1???? I get audio but no video????? just a black screen?????

According to Microsoft support website, Windows Media Player still won't support MP4 files. Though we can make WMP play MP4 video by install some codec, sometime we still encounter can't play MP4 in Windows Media Player issue. MP4 is a container format which may contain multiple video and audio streams. And the video and audio stream can be encoded any of several ways. If the MP4 video or audio codec is not WMP installed codec supported one, Windows Media Player won't play MP4 video of this kind. In order to solve "Windows Media Player won't play MP4 files even when the appropriate codec is installed" and to successfully play any MP4 video in Windows Media Player, we had better convert MP4 to Windows Media Player more supported video format like WMV, AVI. • QT won't play .mov files any more

After a complete system re-install, QT player won't play .mov files any more. It tells me, some components were missing. Hey, this is its own file format!
    MPG files run OK.
Thanks a lot for a good idea!
    Peter

What format are the videos that don't play.
WMV...Windowa Mwdi Videos you'll need the flip4mac component. Free trail:
    http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm
Other codecs, Perian and it's free:
    http://perian.org/
Flash videos like the one on youTube. Adobe Flash comonent and it's free.

You should download all three and install. Remember to rebuild your Permission after install any or all of the above.

  • Quicktime Player 10.0 won't open mp4 files-Help, ASAP!

Error message: "The document “[x].mp4” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."
    YIKES!
I'm just trying to play the danged file in Quicktime. Nothing fancy. The file plays fine on a G5 system running 10.5 8 (with QT 7.x), but I need to make a presentation with the laptop running 10.6. This is the first time that I have tried to play a mp4 file with the Player. It's possible that I have been able to play mp4s previously, using another program (under OS 10.6), but I don't recall. All recent software updates installed.
    Hello, Apple?
    Thanks
    Macbook Pro 2.5GHz OS 10.6.2
    Macbook 2.0GHz OS 10.6.2
    iMac G5 2.0GHz 10.5.8

If you did an upgrade install QT7 gets moved to the Utilities folder, and if you had QT7 Pro, you'll still have it and the QT7 player in the Utilities folder will have all your old features.
That said, there's no reason why, if one has both Flip4Mac and Perian, you shouldn't be able to play most anything in QTX. At any rate, my QTX certainly plays mp4 files without any problem. However the largest mp4 I have handy is about 50MBs, so I can't check to see if size is a problem. I don't know why it would be though.

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

I recently purchased QuickTime 7 Pro to convert avi files to mov files for editing on Imovie. However, QuickTime won't play the files. How can I get them to play and how can I convert them to mov files?
Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start

My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start. I installed DiV X today and all this happened is there anyway to fix this?? I went through everything dragging the icon to the trash and deleting it from safari extentions.

    Download and install
    Perian from  http://perian.org/
You should read this support page  http://perian.org/#support   in case you need to delete older codecs.  In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from  http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac  Note that Perian will be discontinued after the release of Mountain Lion:  http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57434082-263/perian-plug-in-for-quicktime-t o-be-discontinued/?tag=txt;title

  • ITunes MP3 discs won't play in car MP3 stereo

    Hi there...
I burned some MP3 discs, in MP3 disc format, on iTunes that I play on my car MP3 stereo player, and the car MP3 player won't recognize the disc or play just one or two songs on the disc. I'm burning them on CD-Rs. Furthermore, my old MP3 discs I burned on iTunes 3 works FINE on my car stereo, it's just discs burned with the recent versions. Does iTunes convert MP3s in a different way now? Any ideas as to what I can do?
Also, mp3s I create on itunes are not recognized properly on my Motorola cell phone as mp3s... they call them "QP3"s; mp3s converted on a PC are still recognized as iTunes. Any ideas as to why that's happening? Whew, that's a lot. Hope someone can help and thanks for your time...

twangus, your problem could be (let me stress that word could) the way iTunes is burning the disc and your car CD player doesn't like it.
iTunes burns dual platform MP3 CDs: ISO 9660 (for Windows) and HFS+ Extended (for Mac OS X). It could be that your player doesn't like these discs. To test this you should burn your MP3 CD with third-party burning software that allows you to specify what format to burn the disc in. Either exclusively ISO 9660 or HFS+ Extended.
Two burning apps that will let you do this on a trial basis are Dragon Burn and Disc Blaze. Roxio's Toast will also allow you to choose the target platform for the disc but it has no trial version.
Try one of these apps and let us know your results.

  • Flash player won't play on home pages

My flash player won't play on my browser's home pages.  My OS is : windows 7 64 bit ultimate and my browsers are :  Mozilla,Chrome, and IE.  I have owned this machine since laborday 2012 and all of them worked in the begining.  This has been going on for a couple of weeks and I would like to resolve it.  Video works normally in places such as youtube, but will not run on the browsers home pages.  The strange part of it is that it will run the advertisements, but after that is done it will just set there with the loading icon going for awhile until a message come on that states that the stream could not be found.  I just got done checking each browser to see if the players are up to date and they all where current..  Don't know what else to try.  Any suggestions ?  Thanks

  • IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
    In case it helps:
    - I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
    - QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
    - VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.
