My music is on my ipod, but I cannot play it or see the files.

I upgraded to iTunes 11, and when I plugged my iPod classic in to transfer some music, I was told that my iPod was not compatible with this version and would have to be restored.
I did not restore because I know that means it'll wipe the drive.
I don't sync my music because I have a 120GB iPod and a much smaller hard drive. So all my music is managed manually.
I have started up the iPod as a disc drive, but I cannot see the files to pull them down manually.
I have also tried software to download the files, but it won't recognize my iPod.
The last thing I tried was downgrading to iTunes 10.7, but it won't sync with my iPod because the software on the iPod was automatically updated to 11 when I plugged it in after the original software upgrade on my laptop.
Any ideas folks? I really don't to spend all that time re-encoded my audio and uploading to my iPod.
(Believe me I will have a back-up on an external drive from now on to avoid this in the future)

iOS does not currently contain a task manager. You will either have to find and purchase one from the app store or wait for iOS 5 which will contain one.

Congratulations on your new Apple TV! I found an article with steps you can take to share your photos with your Apple TV from your Mac (the steps say 2nd generation, but these steps also apply to 3rd generation of Apple TV as well):
To view your photos using Apple TV:
To view photos using Apple TV (2nd generation), you need to have Home Sharing turned on in iTunes and on your Apple TV, your computer must be on, and iTunes must be open.
For information about turning on Home Sharing, see iTunes Help.
Open iTunes, and choose Advanced > Choose Photos to Share.
In the window that appears, select Share Photos From, and choose a source from the pop-up menu.
Choose “All photos, albums, Events, and Faces” or “Selected albums, Events, and Faces.”If you chose “Selected albums, Events, and Faces,” select the albums, Events, and Faces you want to stream.
Click Apply.
Using the Apple Remote that’s paired with your Apple TV, choose Photos from the main Apple TV menu, and then choose My Photos.

You also mentioned that you are not seeing the AirPlay icon in the tool bar. The reason you are not seeing the AirPlay icon is because AirPlay Mirroring became available with Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8). The following models support AirPlay Mirroring if running Mountain Lion:

Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

I have just bought a new computer and i am transfering my music from my ipod onto my new computer, I have put the files from the music option from my ipod onto my computer. alot of the songs have come across, however there is alot of songs that havent. I have noticed that the m4a files come across but the mp3 does not. the new computer has windows 8 on it, which is very new to me. when i try and play the mp3 files, it will open them up in a different programme and will not open in itunes. does anyone know what i can do?!?!!?!?!

Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. the only way to unfreeze it is by detatching the ipod or resetting with menu/centre (until it loads up again, where it immediately unfreezes and comes up with a load of messages saying "cannot read iPod" and when i try and restore it by pressing menu/centre button while it's plugged in, it says "cannot restore as it is being used by another program" or "error 1415". Any ideas how to sort this out? hope i haven't majorly screwed it up. thanks.

Sorted it out. Purchased songs show up on my ipod but will not play!

I am about ready to drive over my ipod with a car! I have the 80GB ipod and it was working fine until recently. For whatever reason, songs that I had previously (as in months ago) purchased on itunes show up on my ipod, but do not play. All other songs (ones that I downloaded from cd's) show up and play. I have tried everything I can think of but it still won't get them to play! HELP!

iPod does not play content purchased from the iTMS.
If you have made sure that both the iTunes and iPod software are current and have deauthorized and reauthorized your computer, try this test:
1. Deauthorize the computer.
2. Create a new user in the system.
3. Download the free song of the week from the iTMS in the new user account.
4. Play the song in that user account to authorize again.
5. Restore the iPod (using the iPod updater) in the new user account.
6. Sync just the free song of the week and see if it plays on the iPod.
If it does, you appear to have a corrupted iTunes library file, and you should recreate the iTunes library file in your normal user account, and then sync your music back to the iPod and all should be well.

You will need the help of some sort of 3rd party software to help you copy the content from your Shuffle back to your PC. Once you have done that, you can reimport this music into iTunes and configure it to sync to your new Shuffle.

Movies work differant than TV shows, music and apps. With movies, to get them from one device such as an iPod Touch to an iPad, you would need to connect the Touch to your computer first and in iTunes under the file menu, hit transfer purchases. Next connect the iPad and you can sync the movie to the iPad.
While the iPad is connected to the computer, in iTunes, click on the iPad in the left pane and when the screen loads, click movies and from there, you can select the movie that you want to sync.

Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

I realise you can you can delete them on your ipod slowly as you have to click on each one, and you can restore your ipod, but surely there is a way to get around this?

Have you moved or deleted those tracks on your computer (the gift card has got nothing to do with it) ?
You might be able to re-download them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes (re-downloading isn't possible in all countries) - if those songs appear there then delete the entries from your iTunes library (where you are clicking on them to play them and gettinf the 'original file' error), and they should then get a cloud symbol against them for re-downloading.
If they don't appear in that link then have you got them on, for example, an external drive ?

Yes, in theory re-converting would lessen the quality further. However, I have heard people claim (unsubstantiated) that if you are encoding with the same encoder at the same bit rate, then since it will use the same algorthymn, it won't really change the file. I have absolutely no idea if that is true or not.
But... I figure some slight loss in quality re-encoding is still better quality than a song that only plays half way and then stops, right? I suppose you could always tag those files in the comment section with something like "Re-Encoded" and then later if you gain access to your old CDs, you can then make a Smart Playlist to gather those songs and then re-rip them again from your CDs.

Another way to verify which model you have is to look on the back of the iPod Touch itself for one of these Apple part numbers.
