My N97 experience... not all bad

When I first received my N97 at the end of June with its v10 firmware it was truly awful!
I actually went through 3 handsets in 10 days.
I experienced freezing, crashing, incorrect ringtones, slow GPS and "Out of Memory" issues constantly. I was forced, because of the low C: drive, to install widgets, themes and as many app's as possible to Mass Memory, which in turn led to problems of their own when connecting to PC Suite in anything other than PC Suite mode. I could not even install some of Nokia's own app's as they would take up the precious C: drive.
It took me quite awhile to adjust the Destinations settings, using trial and error, so that I used my home wifi and 3G whilst out.
Then, about two or three weeks later, v11 was released on Vodafone and I upgraded the firmware, using PC Suite, with no problem and was quite pleased that I did not have to reinstall everything from scratch. The only change that I noticed with v11 was that my widgets worked a little better and that my thumbnails loaded quicker. However, the phone still gave me "Out of Memory" errors, crashed and was sluggish and unresponsive to touch, sometimes requiring 3/4 taps to get it working.
Like the majority of N97 owners, I was not a happy bunny and felt ripped off when I compared the N97 to my N95 and N95 8GB. I was thoroughly cheesed off with having to go through manually clearing the browser cache every day, not being able to have theme effects on or use anything except the built in themes for fear of crashing. Also the GPS was still taking far too long to get a mediocre lock.
Then around the end of August it was announced that v12 would be launched to address some of these problems and I eagerly awaited its coming. As with all the N97 firmware releases, the Continent version was released first, this was then to be followed by the UK CV (Country Variant) at some time in the future and finally the operator branded version even later still.
It was at this point that my frustration with the N97 got the better of me and I took the decision to change the product code to the Euro one and risk voiding my warranty to get v12 that much quicker, all went surprisingly smoothly and I was able to obtain the v12 firmware weeks ahead of Vodafone's release.
The v12 firmware did bring about some minor changes but not enough to stop my handset from crashing, freezing, every now and then. I still found the phone to be sluggish and unresponsive. I was still having to spend a lot of time "nursing" it by Clearing C: drive, which was hovering around 15MB and watch my RAM usage at around 10Mb. I still could not use anything other than the built-in theme with no effects for fear of overloading the pitiful RAM.
I was also using the beta Nokia Photo Browser as this seemed to display quicker and better than the Gallery. Also, album art was a bit hit and miss although my crashes and freezes were less. To say that I was disappointed at this stage would be an understatement. I felt thoroughly cheated by Nokia who, it seemed to me, had rushed out the N97 with immature firmware just to compete with the iPhone 3GS.
I had experienced poor RAM before, with the N95, but this had been rectified to a large extent, by a firmware update. I thought about the millions of people worldwide who had purchased the N97 and had not, or could not, update the firmware and were cursing Nokia and the N97.
It would seem that Nokia had not learnt from Apple iPhone's original launch when they promised the earth and ended up refunding early adopters after pressure was brought to bear. I also despised Nokia's head in the sand approach to the lens scratching fiasco that, luckily, I have not suffered from.
By this time I was seriously considering getting rid of my N97 and moving on. It was becoming a full time job to ensure that there was enough RAM and C: drive. I was constantly having to make tradeoffs about installing certain app's and although my GPS had improved it wasn't great. I was also cheesed off using the scroll bar to go through lists and got frustrated with it on Contacts and Music, usually ending up using the Nav pad. The touch screen was still a joke with me having to constantly tap to try and get it to work.
Enough was enough!
I'd spent over a quarter of a year trying to come to terms with what was supposed to be a Nokia flagship phone costing £500 that just did not deliver.
And then I saw a preview of v20 with its kinetic scrolling and RAM and C: usage enhancements and thought I'd give the N97 one last chance.
After all, I stood to lose about half the phones cost if I tried to sell it on.
Like most of you, I waited with baited breath for the will they, won't they, release of v20.
Then, finally, it became available for my, now, unbranded Euro firmware and I jumped on it immediately.
That's where I made my first mistake, as I downloaded v20 straight away using NSU and immediately started to get freezes, crashes and rebooting. Photo's were slow and the Music library was a nightmare.
The penny then dropped, as they say, and I realised from my experiences with the N95 and N95 8GB, that with a firmware upgrade of this magnitude it was bound to cause problems if I either just upgraded or reinstalled from PC Suite backup.
I then proceeded to format both the phone and Mass Memory and reinstall everthing from scratch. Not an easy or short task I might add.
It was worth it though!
I had nearly 60MB free on C: drive, before installing themes, app's and widgets. My RAM was now 40+MB after boot up and rarely goes below 20MB.
Kinetic scrolling is a joy to use. The phone is no longer sluggish. The touch screen is very responsive. I ditched Nokia Photo Browser beta as the in-built photo's prog offered so much more. The music library is a lot better. Particularly with album art. Boot up time is quicker. Widgets are more stable, although Accuweather seem to have dropped "Current Location". My GPS achieves a more accurate, and quicker, lock than before. I experience a lot less lags. The built-in browser is a lot quicker, I can hold down a key in QWERTY to get a symbol. The speakers even sound better!
Also there was a lot of tinkering and tweaking of settings as this can make a big difference to the way the phone funtions, as we can see by the forum postings.
IMHO this was the N97 I thought I was getting in June. This is the N97 that Nokia should, and could, have released and I cannot excuse them for palming off inferior firmware.
OK, it's not perfect, but as Julia Roberts says in Pretty Woman... "it has potential".
Am I going to ditch it? The answer is no!
Because I think that v20 has gone a long way to solving a lot of the things that bugged me. It shows me what this phone is capable of. It can multi task. It can run prog's without crashing.
Some of us wax lyrical about the N95 but I remember all the complaints about the lack of RAM and it's slowness, poor camera and video. until it received it's v20 upgrade which changed the phone completely and actually put it ahead of the N95 8GB with its restricted Mass Memory.
Perhaps smart phones are becoming too smart.
We get them and fire them up, sometimes ignoring the manuals, and then shove loads of third party software on them without a thought or adjustment to settings and expect them to work perfectly. I know from my own experience that I've had to uninstall software from a handset because of conflicts or poor programming.
I know that there are delays with the release of firmware updates between the Continent, CV and operator branded handsets but this is not all down to Nokia but rather to getting country approvals and operator "adjustments".
I must stress that these are my opinions based on my usage, app's and phone model.
I understand I may come in for a lot of flak for this and I am certainly no technical genius. I'm just trying to relate my everyday experience and frustration with the N97.
As my dear old mum used to say... "Speak as you find" and I'm finding this phone a lot better than it was.

I have had a very similar experience with the N97 and agree that now with firmware v20 the phone is just usable. It's ridiculous that to get to this point we've had to put so much work into researching solutions, resetting the phone multiple times, formatting the mass memory, reloading media and maps (also multiple times), uninstalling and reinstalling apps, and installing and reinstalling firmware updates. My wife jokingly said to me that I'd spent more time trying to get the phone running than actually using it. The sad thing is that this is pretty much true and no matter how well the phone works I will always remember the first four months of very sub par performance.
IMHO if Nokia hadn't skimped on the memory for the RAM and c drive the N97 would have suffered from a lot less problems. Also instead of spending four months trying to resolve these memory issues in the development for the v20 firmware release, they could have focussed on the multitude of other bugs. And how much do you think Nokia saved by skimping, maybe a few dollars per handset. Contrast this with how much bad publicity they have received over the N97 as well as the bad experience for people who spent US $700 for a flagship device.
Added to all these faults is the poor way that Nokia have handled this. From the head in the sand approach to the camera lens scratches and poor GPS, to the lack of Mac support, and to the complete denial that there is even a problem.
Nokia's official support is also problematic, the user to user forum is good but it should not be a replacement for official support pages (the device support pages only provide the product guide and link to the discussions forum) and getting anything other than form responses and incorrect information from the Nokia Customer Care makes this service a complete waste of time.
Will I sell my N97? No, not for the moment.
Can I recommend the N97? No!
Can I recommend any Nokia product? No!

    Hi everyone,
We are migrating right now from PageBuilder to Experience Manager.
We have now a dedicated team to manage every category of our website.
By default, we can only deploy from authoring to live all rules/experience.
Because different people works on different category, we would like to push only a rule (not all the rules).
Is it possible technicaly and supported ?
    Thanks,

Interesting use case, I would also like to know if/how this is possible.

  • BT ..Its not all bad

Having been rather critical in my last few posts I would just like to give praise to BT for allowing people to complain and have a good moan on a forum that is available for all the world to see, unlike some BB provides who hide forums in a members only section.

Hm i suppose, but with my experience i had them for over half a year saying my internet was fine, even the engineer said it was. Wasn't until i contacted the BT Staff on this forum to find out what the problem was, and they sorted it then.

  • Microsoft Service Pack 2 - not all versions are equal; how to update to the latest one "safe

I posted this under another topic where it was relevant, but thought the instructions I got from Microsoft were useful (as was my experience in using them as I sent back a reply to them with the problems I encountered [none of which were particularly bad]):
One important point to note is that not all Windows XP SP2 upgrades are equal.
I had a different issue and spoke to Microsoft, who advised me to uninstall the version of SP2 I had and reinstall the newest version (the old version was about 70mb, the new one nearly 250mb).
Apparently the old SP2 had quite a few problems with it; I've found the new one to be "simply stress free" since installing...
The SP2 file name I installed (ie the newest at the time I did it) was "windowsxp-kb835935-sp2-enu".
Here's their instructions - I disagree with the way round that they suggested downloading the update (ie I would strongly advise downloading the update and having it sitting on your desktop before doing anything!!! - please see my feedback email to them that follows (you will note that I had problems connecting to the internet after uninstalling the earlier version; this, combined with the fact that I could barely read what was on the screen would have given me a major inconvenience had I not done this)!!! (and don't blame me if it goes horribly wrong - it's also worth double-checking that the version of SP2 the email links to is the most up to date. I've had a quick check myself, and it does indeed appear to still be the most up to date):

    MY REPLY:
HiI successfully carried out the installation on Saturday.A few minor problems ensued (the second one may have cause a novice user real problems! Certainly caused me some concern whilst working through it!). I had to reinstall ATI drivers from scratch (for Radeon 9800 Pro); this was however the only set of drivers that appeared to "detach" itself. The main problem here was that instead of using the usual standard VGA driver (which it does when I uninstall it once a month to install updated drivers), it used some other driver that made the screen very difficult to see (especially on blue backgrounds!). Running ATI's total uninstall program sorted this out however, and fortunately I had the last update package from ATI still on my system. After uninstalling and reinstalling there appeared to be no further video problems.2. After installing SP2 (and before installing above), whilst I was in the process of getting everything up and running (eg installing the security updates) the system randomly froze about 4 or 5 times; the only way to sort this out was to use the power button. I traced this problem to Windows changing my wireless networking settings so that it handled everything; I have a Netgear adaptor the software for which usually controls this (Netgear Smart Wizard). Basically the two were trying to do the same task and causing crashes; on switching Windows management off, things settled down (the Netgear driver did not need to be reinstalled).3. As a minor point, after the upgrade and installing all other updates, I noted that Microsoft Update was no longer running; I had to reinstall it from Windows Update and the messages I got whilst installing suggested that it was still partially installed but that there were problems with it. It now works.4. As a final minor point, I attach the Scan log from Registry Mechanic which I ran after everything was up and running; it fixed various problems within the registry. I note that the majority of errors are inconsequential, but note that a few do relate to the various Microsoft installs; maybe the installer program for SP2/ Media Player 0 need to sort these out in future releases? Don't think they're a real problem though! The instructions supplied worked fine; one thing I would suggest is that users are instructed to download the SP2 upgrade pack to their desktop prior to uninstalling the original SP2; I believe that my internet connection problems started after I had uninstalled the original SP2 which may have caused problems downloading the new SP2. It also ensures that the download is successful (eg if the site was down for maintenance); I was advised whilst uninstalling SP2 that about 20 programs/drivers would not work properly after the uninstall and so the immediate reinstall was vital! One thing that seemed to fix after reinstalling was a problem I was having installing Media Player 0; after installing it previously, every time I checked for updates on it the whole program would reinstall. Now however this has fixed. I will let you know if I encounter any further problems, but things all seem to be fine now, touch wood.....!
Hope this helps!Message Edited by gjc26 on 0-27-2006 02:50 AM

One small thing - I believe the reason why some of my drivers were messing up was because they were SP2 specific; the older drivers and the ones that were compatible with both SP and 2 were fine.
As soon as I did the reinstall, all of the drivers/programs that were not working, worked (aside from the ones that I mentioned in my attached email above).
So, if after uninstalling the old SP2 you are told that loads of drivers/programs will not work, fear not - most should fix themselves upon installing the new SP2.

  • Boot Camp 3.0 and Windows 7 64-bit - My experiences/notes

I just installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the Snow Leopard DVD onto my MacBook Pro 17 (Mid 09) which is running Windows 7 64bit RTM and had Boot Camp 2.1 previously installed on it.
    My experiences/notes:
    1. The Boot Camp 3.0 installation automatically removed the Boot Camp 2.1 drivers that it was going to update and then installed the newer 3.0 ones
    2. You still can only use the GeForce 9600M GT graphics chipset, i.e. only the 9600M GT shows to windows and appears in the device manager
    3. Deferred Procedure Calls (DPC) Latency issues still exist although it doesn't seem like you need to run the Bootcamp.exe on CPU 0 affinity only (Bootcamp.exe = the updated/Boot Camp 3.0 version of KbdMgr.exe)
    4. You still can't fully dim the keyboard backlight with the F5 key
    5. I manually updated the 'important' drivers to the very newest one, i.e.
5a. Latest Nvidia driver for GeForce 9600M GT => 186.81notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
5b. Latest WLAN chip driver => Broadcom (4322AG chipset) Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista 5.10.91.8 (14 May 2009) = sp43743.exe
5c. Lateset Realtek High Definition Audio Codec => VistaWin7R231.zip
    6. Although I still have bad DPC latency, I haven't yet noticed any audio/video lag/drop-outs/screeches etc.
Best of luck to you all and I hope this helps someone, Dingle7

I just want to send one form from numbers not all forms.

I'm sorry, but I don't want to give you bad advice at this point. I don't use Numbers and I would not know how to extract a sheet from the file - which it sounds like you need to do - based on my very, very limited experience with spreadsheet files.
Maybe this would be of some help to you.

Lets just keep the discussion alive and hopefull someone else will pop in with an idea.
You should probably post your question in here as well. You would probably get more help since this is the iWorks for iOS forum.

  • Memory Juggle - Not all chips are recognized.

I have a MacPro. It is the base model 2.8 quad core with two 1GB 800Mhz chips in it.
I added four 2GB chips to the machine (3rd party)
Of course what i am doing/describing is paired per both pull-out memory cards.
I moved the Apple 1GB chips to the 3rd slot and put the two 2GB chips in slot one and two.
When doing this, the apple chips in slot 3 are not recognized.
i moved the apple chips back to slot one and the 2GB chips to slot 2 and 3. After doing this, the chips in slot 2 are not recognized.
no matter what configuration i try, i am not getting the full 10GB and not all my chips are recognized.
each time i reconfigure the chips, a different one is unrecognizable so it isn't like any one specific chip is bad.
any idea why and how to solve this?

As mentioned above, you must install the memory in pairs in each slot. You can't have a stick in slot 3 without a stick in slot 4, for example.
Put your 2GB sticks in slots 1&2 of each riser. Then put your 2 1GB sticks in slots 3&4 of riser A.
If memory is still not recognized, reseat it, as mentioned above. You could also try restarting and resetting the PRAM; do this by holding down command/option/p/r while restarting, and hold them down until you hear 2 or 3 startup chimes.

  • ITunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 - music sync prob (artists not all shown)

    Hello,
I'v updated to iTunes 9 und iPhone OS 3.1, went ok.
Most sync with iPhone did well, but in the music sync window not all of my artists show up. I compared and can not find a difference between tracks to artist that show up and others that do'nt (mp3, ID-Tag version 2.3,...).
Does anyone experience the same and/or has a solution to this?
    H.

    Hello,
in the case where I can see the artist, album-artist is empty. So I tried to empty the album-artist in the not-visible case too. Result: now it was visible
Because there are artist-entries for sorting too, I tried this:
album-artist filled, but sorting-album-artist empty => it is not visible
    album-artist empty, but sorting-album-artist filled =>
    ergo:
    1) there is a way to get these visible: leave the album-artist-fields empty !! (may use the sorting-album-artist-field at least)
    2) the visibility of entries in the sync-list should not depend on the filling of the album-artist-fields
=> This should be fixed in the next update...

Regarding iTunes U courses, would I be able to link to books/sites (like say an amazon hardback book or link to a kindle book they can purchase and download).  Considering that not all books are available on iBooks I'm hoping this is allowed.   Also the possibility on monetizing since amazon gives commission for linking.
This question is for both the uncredited (private) courses and the bigger accredited accounts.    I am a  developer trying to learn how to help my area schools and also have some ideas for my own courses.    Obviously keeping within the iTunes U app would be preferred in most cases (to the learning experience) since they can take notes and see them within the app itself.
If the reply comes from a non-apple employee please let me know (or better yet, link to) where that is clarified.   I would hate to develop something just to later find out it is against the apple iTunes U agreement.

    Fair question
And, to be even more fair, I have to tell you that I get that every single day. And it's getting worse (or better, depending on how you look at it).
I always try to let people know it's a long way until you get to a confortable point, a point where you can create something. And that's exactly what I am trying to do, or at least asking how/if I should do it. And then I let them know where to start. That's what I want.
    Thanks.

  • Not All Variables Bound - Only on Dates in the Visual Studio/Table Adapter

I am trying to execute a SQL statement created in a table adapter. I am using VS 2010 and ODP 11.2.0.1.2.
Anytime I add a DATE column in the where clause with a parameter (in bold below) I get one of two errors.
    1. Pass date as 01/01/2010: "Bad Month" -ok I know what this is...
    2. Pass date as 01-JAN-10: ORA-01008: not all variables bound
    where pro.user_id = :user_id
    and (pro.select_typ_cd = 'adr'
    and acct.mkt_uw_empl_id = pro.select_key
    or pro.select_typ_cd = 'abc'
    and acct.mstr_agy_lgl_entity = pro.select_key)
    and (:BUSINESS_TYP_CD = 'all' or acct.BUSINESS_TYP_CD = :BUSINESS_TYP_CD)
    and (USER_ACCT_STS_CD != 'lost' or SYS_ACCT_STS_CD != 'lost')
    and LOB_EFF_DATE = :EFF_FROM

Got this to work in one case
    First use to_date LOB_EFF_DATE > to_date(:EFF_DATE_TO,'MM/DD/YYYY').
Second on the table adapter parameter you have to define the DBType as string not Date, and the provider type as VARCHAR2 not Date. Make sure you change the length to 10 it defaults to 7.
Oracle needs to fix this why in the world do I have to pass a date in a parameter on a table adapter as a string and go through this mess.

  • Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many (not all) documents that cannot be opened in either Pages '09 or Pages 5.  They show on my doc lists, but are greyed out so I can't try to change extensions or anything else.  Some are PDFs.

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09.  The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out.  They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs.  As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error.  I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices.  I just want to be able to open my saved documents!  Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating.  I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade."  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.

I'm getting an odd effect with a JLayeredPane in that some (but not all) of a higher layer is being hidden behind a lower layer JComponent. Is this likely to be a layout manager issue (I'm not setting one) or am I doing something else silly?
I'd have posted some code, but the highly simplified case that I first wrote works OK, and I can't quite see the difference between it and my program. It'll take at least another day to simplify that one to make it postable. So I thought I'd ask the general question first.

Forgive me if this counts as highjacking an old thread. Did you ever find a solution, and what was it?
I kinda have the opposite problem: I have two JPanels in a JLayeredPane and put the relevant one of them in front depending on the situation. But when the one conatining a JList is behind, if I click where the JList is, the selected element of the list comes to front even though I don't think it should, and also some JButtons when the mouse comes over them.
I'll ask a colleague who has more experience with JLayeredPane than I have. If I find a solution, I'll post it here. Should be glad to hear from anyone who might know anything about the problem.

  • [TV@Master] Not all availabe channels are detected

A few weeks ago I bought the TV@nywhere master card. I downloaded the driver from this forum and MSIVPS.
I already recorded some programs and movies and burned to DVD. In my experience this works best using WinAvi. When I use WinDVDvreator, sometimes the sound gets behind after burning to DVD, although the original file playes ok on the PC.
The remote control works fine when you install MSIPVS after installing WinDVDcreator. The other way round it does not work. Then the Wincinema manager is set incorrectly (I suppose).
Altough the card is working I still have some problems:
    - I attached the Cable, but channels are only found setting the software to Antenna,
    - Not all channels are found. I live in the Netherlands. The 2 main Dutch channels are not detected, many other channels are. When trying Christv it found these channels, so I suppose it is a software problem. Maybe something to do with the frequency range, but this cannot be adjeusted in MSIVPS? Does anyone have a solution? I is very annoing not being able to receive all channels.
After installing the beta versions of the driver and MSIPVS3, it appeared that some channels are detected in antenna mode and some channels are detected in cable mode. Why not all channels in cable mode?
Is there something to adjust in order to fix this?

    jaksun5,
have you searched or browsed through this forum to see if your problem has been solved?
if you cannot find an answer you should have started your own thread, giving as much information about your system (including your location, local TV standard and connection) and your problem, and what steps you have already taken to remedy this. at the moment your post makes you sound lazy (which i'm sure you may not be) by expecting others to find solution for you. by demonstrating what you have already attempted in order to solve problem, other users will be more willing to help you
if no answer then becomes apparent, you should contact your local MSI support office, to see if they can assist you. who knows, you might get a solution off them, if so, then post back here. in future, someone may have your same problem. by doing all the above steps, they will come to your thread, with your solution, and you will have helped someone down the line
    How to contact MSI.
    good luck!
