Have you tried resetting your iPod?
Press and hold the "Menu" and middle buttons together for 10 seconds.
Keep in mind that this step may take wuite a few tries if it doesn't seem to be working in the beginning.
Also, this is best done while connected to a power source, although I would recommend trying both ways several times.

  • ITunes 7 and Nano No-No

My system is completely in error since the update of iTunes 7. The Nano mounts in the finder and i can start iTunes 7 but when i doubleclick a file on the Nano iTunes hangs, system hangs everything very awkward. Connected to my powerbook (itunes 6.04) all fine. Now clicked restore my Nano, but completely hangs itunes. itunes 7 smells like a huge disaster bug has hit me...

Excellent! Glad you got it figured out. Having built several hi-end audiophile systems I can tell you to never underestimate the ability of EFI from a power supply to impact signal transmission.

  • Problem with synching iPod 4th gen Nano to iTunes Vista 8.02

Not had a problem with this Nano - sometimes hangs on first play nothing a reset doesn't cure - til now.
For some reason iTunes decided a Smart playlist (To delete - if I rate one star it lists it there) was missing when it was there, just disappeared for a while. It eventually came back after I recreated it.
This meant the other playlists I synch from fell over and refused to synch to the iPod (having a massive collection and only a 8Gb Nano means I tend to have playlist for Recent stuff, and random shuffle type playlists).
So I deleted the condition in those Smart Playlists, and thought it was fine...nope, it now only synchs less that half of the iPod, even though the playlists have loads more tunes in them. Tried deleting the 'To Delete' playlist(s), restoring the iPod, upgrading from 8 to 8.0.2 - no dice. Even a restart and an iPod reset doesn't fix it.
It just says 'synch complete' when there are obviously many more files to download, it usually only does 300-600 then stops. Sometimes it tells me (wrongly) there is not enought space on the iPod by 0.2 of a Gb or something, and says it won't synch. When I reduce the size of one of the playlists, it then goes back to saying 'Synch complete'.
Don't know what's wrong with it - could it be the iTunes library - I moved it to an external USB drive, and switched from my XP machine to this one, but it seemed to be working fine? Hence the restart - I had switched off the drive when I put the laptop into suspend mode, so initially it wasn't there, so I thought iTunes might have gotten confused, and did a restart after upgrade. Still the same.
    Any ideas?

Nope still doing it. Just got to 2-thirds full.
So what's happening now it says
'Ipod cannot be synched, playlists are 1.82Gb and there is 1.77Gb on the iPod'
Fine, you then reduce the size of one of the playlists by say 100-200Mb:
Then it doesn't sync those files - it doesn't sync anything and says 'Sync completed' and 'Ok to disconnect'
    Argh.
    BTW what's sentinel?

  • Transferring ITUNES-to-NANO music crashes XP Laptop

    Hi,
[I've seen variations of this post, but not exact.]
I just received a new NANO for Christmas. Both times that I've tried to download from ITUNES to NANO on my XP laptop, my XP laptop crashes. Frozen. I have to reset my laptop. The NANO also hangs so I have to reset that (hold MENU and center button for >6sec) as well.
I was able to load the IPOD software, and my system does recognize the USB device.
I assume that this means there is some offending software that conflicts when this transfer occurs.
But how do I isolate? I've seen culprits such as phone software, spyware software (I have neither of those). Where do I begin?
    Appreciate any input.

    Hi,
I isolated my problem and resolved it. There was one song in my library that apparently was corrupted. Whenever that song gets downloaded into the IPOD NANO, the laptop would hang.
In fact, whenever I played the song from ITUNES, the laptop would also hang. The curious thing is that I had previously been able to download this song on a CD, which works fine.
I deleted that song from my entire library and repurchased from Apple. I was then able to download into the ipod.
Thanks for your input. I guess I was jumping the gun in hinting that the nano wasn't compatible with XP. Reading all these posts seems overwhelming.

  • Itunes 7 wrecked my ipod nano

I just got a new ipod nano 8gb. made the horrible mistake of upgrading to itunes 7 while the ipod was plugged into the computer. The ipod was wiped clean and now itunes does not recognize it when I plug it in. I get the error message that says the software necessary for communicating with this ipod was not installed properly and that I should reinstall itunes. Well doncha think I have done that about 12 times now. I tried reinstalling older versions, newer versions. I believe I have tried everything in the last 2 weeks. A friend plugged their ipod in and itunes wouldn't recognize theirs either. HELP!

So You wrecked your ipod nano not itunes. I think what you might need to do is to use your iPod Reset Utility program. Better yet post in the iPod Nano forum area here:

  • Frustrating, Lousy Product

First, my brand new iPod Nano would hang up with the "do not disconnect" warning after performing such a routine function as deleting songs. Had to blow away my one free phone call to learn that Apple knows about this -- it's simply a spat with antiviral software. Couldn't tell us about this on the website, could you? Now its instructions about putting music from a CD are plain wrong. No, you cannot simply put a CD into the drive and click import. THAT DOES NOT WORK! There is no way to move music from a CD to an iPod easily. I'm not going to spend $59 on a phone call to find out why. I'm shipping this lousy, frustrating, malfunctioning stuff back to Apple. Never again will I venture into this rotten orchard.

DO Not Disconnect means that your computer has recognized your iPod - to make the message go away, you need to unmount the iPod
this can be done either in iTunes:
    1) select the ipod icon in the left column
    2) selecdt the Eject button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window
or other methods that are described in the vast online docummentation and tutorials availble....
as far as online documentation, there is a ton of it, such as the Users Guide:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPodClick_WheelUserGuide.pdf
    or the iPod support site:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/connect/
as for adding/importing music to your ipod, again, lots of online info:

  • ITunes Hangs when I plug in my iPod Nano

I'm hoping someone can help. When I plug in my new iPod Nano, it shows up in iTunes, but iTunes hangs claiming it is Analyzing Track X of Y. • Nano: 30 second plus hang (freeze) with audiobooks & lectures (30 min files

I just got a 4g Nano. I'm having a problem where when I press play to listen to longer files (30 min lectures, audiobooks, etc.) I the screen hangs for about 30 seconds and then works fine. When I press buttons, when it finally stops hanging it executes those "commands" all at once. I never have any significant freezes or hangs with normal songs. It is frustrating because my 4g ipod plays audiobooks without a hitch. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

    Michael,
You may want to try the Five Rs.
Make sure that the software on the iPod is up to date, too...

  • Itunes hangs when connecting ipod nano 5g

I have iTunes 9 and a ipod nano 5g. When I connect the ipod to my mac, ITunes just hangs.
OSX recognizes the ipod, so I think the cable and usb port are just working fine.
I already did a rebuild of the itunes lib.
Anybody an idea how to resolve the problem?

  • ITunes hangs "not responding" when nano 5g connected to PC

    Hi,
Just bought my wife a Nano 5g for her birthday to replace her old broken 2nd gen version.
Plugged it in, iTunes fired up as usual, except it complained that v9 is needed.
V9 downloaded and installed, but hangs when ipod connected, task manager shows as "not responding"
I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling itunes; Changing usb cables and usb port; Also tried on another PC.
    Same thing happens.
Is this a dud ipod? What are my options?
Been an ipod user for years and have always hated itunes as a piece of software and this could well be the final straw.
    Help needed please.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I have used the nano on XP Home and Vista with no problems. So I would keep looking for a solution on your home system. If you are running service pack 3 and all the latest updates for iTunes and the firmware for you nano, you should be good.
You might start thinking about things that are on your home system that are not on the system at work. Maybe anti virus software, etc. that kind of thing. I don't know anything specific regarding anti virus software, just using that as an example that might play into it.
My system running XP home has avast anti virus, steam and a bunch of games installed. I also have some Logitech drivers installed for their keyboards, mice, etc. but that is really it.

  • Ipod nano 6 gen hangs when turning off the backlight. That is, it doesn't respond to button presses on the touch screen.

ipod nano 6 gen hangs when turning off the backlight. That is, it does not respond to button presses on the touch screen. He also has just a white screen instead of the desktop display. Tried to rearrange the screen from another Ipod nano, but nothing came of it - all the same ... What should I do?

    Hi Rc_Drifter,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The article below will help you troubleshoot the issue you are having with your iPod nano. Restoring the device may resolve the backlight issue as well.
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
    Display shows a white screen
Try putting the iPod into disk mode:
Reset the device (press the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black—about eight seconds).
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.
While the device is in disk mode, sync it to iTunes and try to restore.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Nano hangs on apple icon when turning on. After several restarts, still will not go past Apple icon. Computer doesn't recognize Nano when plugged in.

I tried to connect iPod Nano this morning to sync Podcasts. Keep getting error that device not found.
Restarted Nano and the screen hangs on the Apple icon & doesn't progress.
I restarted one time and looks like I got into a diagnostics program.
Tried to restart while plugged into computer, still doesn't go past Apple icon.
Any idea on how to get Nano to come up fully and connect to computer via iTunes?

Restore the phone from Recovery Mode as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • 2ndGen 8GB NANO hangs on sync with some MP3s

The SYNC process hangs on my new NANO on some songs. At first I thought it was only on certain iTunes v3.0/192kbps-BR songs (which makes up ~2,000 songs in my library), but this morning it hung on a brand new podcast (distributed on iTunes 7 store).
This is the 2nd 8BG NANO in two days (I took the first one back as it was doing the same thing and I assumed it was defective).
Anyone have any ideas? So far I've been deleting the files it hangs on but its a pain because I have to nuke my iMac during the update, reboot, then it has to write all the hundreds of songs to the ipod all over again to find the next one it hangs on, all at USB speeds (vs Firewire...)
    Help???

Have you tried restoring your iPod?
    Restore iPod
Also, see if recreating your iTunes library helps (this will not affect your library content)...
How to recreate your iTunes Library
Don't forgot, podcasts, although distributed via the iTunes Store, are not from Apple. Anybody can make the file (although if it is from a well-known company, it is probably fine (for the most part)).
If two iPods are doing this, I would assume that the problem lies in your iTunes library, rather than the iPod (so we'll troubleshoot that).

  • Hang after added 2GB ram into S12 (VIA Nano version)

    Hi
My S12 (VIA Nano version) came with original 1GB ram, and I have added the additional 2GB into my S12 (Total 3GB ram), the 3GB ram can be recognized in BIOS but it's running very slow and hang in the windows login screen.
I have asked Lenovo's customer service (Hong Kong) and they said that the S12 (VIA Nano version) can support up to total 3GB ram but I wonder that this is true.
Can anyone help me to confirm it and solve my problem?
Does anyone have the same situation? Thanks!

My Via Nano S12 is having the same hanging issue after installing a 2 GB Kingston stick from NewEgg. At times it freezes when logging into a user account, other times it freezes within 4-5 minutes of use.
I'm running memtest on it at the moment fearing bad RAM. I'll give this BIOS update a shot after having read this thread. Anyone else have any luck getting this resolved?

  • IPod Nano (4th Generation) switches on when connected to USB power - shows Menu & hangs (unresponsive to click wheel) - deems off after 5-sec - Switches off after disconnecting from USB Power - syncs with iTunes - Tried 5R's - Problem still persists

    1. The iPod Nano (4th Generation - 8GB) switches on, only when connected to USB power by showing apple logo and displays Menu options thereafter..
    2. However, I can not access Menu as it is unresponsive to click wheel. As a result it is inaccessible to any further use,
    3. NOTE: it displays "Battery Fully charged" icon on the screen without any "Lock" icon.
    4. After  5-sec to 10-secs the screen deems off.. i.e. goes to sleep mode.. And thereafter would probably remain like that (sleeeping) for eternity!!!!
    5. It Switches off after WITHOUT DISPLAYING any Apple Logo immediately after disconnecting from USB Power.
    6. In other words, it can be switched on only through USB power in spite of battery being fully charged.
    7. Interestingly, it syncs with iTunes. It is recognised in iTunes (Latest version 11+).. Displays on screen all commands Like.. syncronising, connecting, connected,
    8. Allows to add Music, videos like a normal ipod & displays all status information in iTunes.
    9. Read Trobleshooting & Tried all 5R's. Registered, Resetted, updated & Restored to iOS 1.0.2
    10. It is now displaying to select Language in place of Menu options, with no access through click wheel, centre button whatsoever... Problem still persists
KINDLY GUIDE ME THE SOLUTION. APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE in advance...

"I get the feeling that this is a software issue that could probably be solved quite easily"
