‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

There are two different types of adapters by Apple that look similar. One is a 5 Watt adapter used with iPhones and iPods. The other is a 10 Watt adapter used with the iPad. Other than looking at the text on the adapter, which is hard to read, you can tell the different by looking at the socket the pin part plugs into the adapter. The 5 Watt has two notches and the 10 Watt has only one notch.
Make sure you use the 10 Watt adapter with an iPad.

1. Double-click the Home button to see all Inactive Apps
2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
3. Tap the minus sign to close App
4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo (ignore the red slider)

I can understand this with videos you are streaming, i.e. maybe you have a slow data connection.
Videos on your phone should not do this. Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

YouTube is taking forever to load and play on my iPad. What can I do to fix it?

For the last couple of days, YouTube will not load. Even if I watch in 240p it can only play for about 10 seconds and the buffers forever. I've tried turning my iPad off, closing out of YouTube and signing back in, and even turning wifi on and off. My Internet connection is fine, other websites (except Netflix) are loading fine. This has happened before. What should I do?

This may just be an internet problem. Or there could be too many people trying to get on to youtube at the same time. Therefore it is not a problem. Try again in about 10 minutes.

My Macbook Pro has been running slowly for several weeks. Safari keeps locking up and I have to Force Quit. It is very frustrating because it has always worked so well. It would of had to be a very powerful magnet to damage, actually erase, the hard drive. That is the only thing that would cause it from starting up, a magnet powerful enough to erase part of the data on the drive. Hard drives are also shielded to some degree to prevent this from happening. If this particular mac was running lion or mountain lion try booting to the Recovery HD, hold down the command+r keys at startup. If that doesn't work try command+option+r key and hold those down until you see a globe on the screen. That will boot the system from over the internet from the Apple servers using the online recovery system. That is if the system can use the online recovery system. Only systems newer then late 2011 model can use it. From either type of boot try to repair the drive using disk utility. If that fails then you will need to reinstall OS X on the system.
I doubt the magnet cause any physical damage to the hardware in the system. So once you repair the drive or reinstall the OS the system should start working again.
