My new iMac are slow, what is wrong?
Hi, I just got a new iMac 21.5 tum for christmas. My parents got a MacBook Pro and it feels like their Macbook Pro are faster than my iMac. My iMac takes forever to load and start some programs and sometimes and when I play Minecraft for example and I got skype running in the background I usually have 58-62 fps and when Skype says ''Fred came online'' (or any skype notification) I get framedrops and I get around 19 fps for a few seconds. And my games and programs crash often, like when I tried to upload a video I made with iMovie to youtube, iMove crashed. And when I started the game World of Warcraft in fullscreen the screen got black for 50 seconds and then the game started. And when I try to record a gameplay with QuickTime Player its lagging alot, my friend got a iMac 21.5 tum too and he not none of theese problems and its not lagging for him when he's recording with QuickTime Player. Is it something wrong with my computer or is it just a teribly bad computer for gaming and is it like this for everyone?
Some info:
Processor: 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
Software: Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion (11C74)
Sorry for my bad english! :/
Since it's new you should call AppleCare and let them walk you through troubleshooting. BTW, what is "tum?"

Purchasing a new iMac (27 i5), what is the best method to transfer programs/files,documents from a 24" iMac?
What is the best method to remove personal data from the 24" iMac?Use setup assistant which is offered when you setup your new Mac. It will transfer information from a Time Machine backup, Clone or another Mac.
It's best to do this during setup to avoid issues with duplicate IDs.

Someone told me that I might be able to chat among Mac computers and I thought it was with Bonjour...is this correct?
Don't see it anywhere on my new iMac?
Thanks!
New to apple computers...any help is appreciated!Hey mmanno,
Great question. The following resource provides the information you are seeking:
OS X Mountain Lion: What is Bonjour?
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11449
Bonjour is a networking technology developed by Apple Inc. that makes it easy to set up and use devices and services on a network. Because Bonjour-compatible devices and services advertise their availability, it’s easy for you (or an application or service) to find devices and services that you want to use. For example, if you turn on file sharing, other OS X users on your local network will see your computer when they browse.
For information on using Bonjour to send messages to others on your local network, see this article:
Messages (Mountain Lion): Send messages to people on your local network

New iMac very slow? why?
Hi,
I have recently bought brand new iMac 21,5" 2,7 Ghz i5 with 8GB ram and 1 TB memory. I have transfered all data from Time Machine backup. And my computer is very very slow with apps, expecialy when it wakes up from sleep. I turn on safari, illustrator and photoshop and it takes 10 minutes to became normal. If I open mail it is very very slow. Also, twitter app. I don't know where the problem is. It is brand new computer. It has all the power. I have checked "verify disk" and everything is ok. I have repaired all permissions, and still nothing. iPhoto is extremely slow but its just iPhoto, very bad program.
But after 5-10 minutes after wakeup iMac starts to behave normal. When Photoshop is turned on (after 5-10 min) it starts to act normal. Sometimes excel doesn't won't to turn on. Mouse icon turns rainbow circle and nothing. I force quit it and start again and after 2-3 minutes it opens.
Does anybody have an idea what should i do?Thank you. Here are info:

Trouble importing photos to DROBO on new iMac-painfully slow
I have been using LR without trouble for years. After switching from my old MacbookPro to a new iMac, I am unable to import photos. The trouble coincides with the move to the new computer.
LR recognizes the photos when I insert the CF card. I am able to start the import, but the import is ridiculously slow (20 raw images in an hour). I have backed up my catalogue and optimized the catalogue. When this failed to help, I trashed LR (by dragging application to trash) and reinstalled it.
I AM able to import onto my Hard Drive. But not to the DROBO where my LR library is contained.
Also, LR is no longer able to distiguish between new photos and photos already in catalogue. And at times I get a message saying that LR cannot open my catalogue. Rebooting the computer fixes this, but it is a troubling message.
Thank you for your help.
Message was edited by: jessica eveCheck the Drobo support pages and third-party sites. The Drobo is infamous for being desperately slow under some circumstances and for some apps. It also appears that the app is having trouble locking the Lr catalogue database on the Drobo device, which is why you are getting errors opening up the app sometimes.
It really sounds like you have some config problems you need to sort out. Start from the basics: how is the Drobo storage physically accessed by the iMac, and what protocol is it using to get the storage to show up in /Volumes/?
Make sure the Drobo firmware is up-to-date, and check the iMac logs (and the Drobo logs, if it has such a thing) to see if there is anything out of the ordinary there. You may also want to verify that the cables and connectors you use to get from the iMac to the Drobo are sound. Swap cables if you have to, just to rule that out. If you are using Firewire or USB, make sure the cables are rated for the highest speed each devices supports, and that you are not going through any dodgy hubs.
Because it sounds like it is sustained bulk transfers that are suffering; typically this indicates that one device or another in the chain is slowing the traffic down in order to satisfy a basic data safety requirement. -
Brand new iMac: super slow web browsing
Brand new iMac is super slow while browsing the web.
We have cable internet, and the iMac is connected via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. We have a Windows machine connected to the same router.
The Windows machine loads web pages extremely quickly, the iMac takes 20 seconds to a minute to load anything.
Clearly there is a settings problem on the iMac. No idea what.
It isn't the router.
It isn't the broadband connection.
It isn't the DNS server.
Please help!I'm not sure if you understood my original post, however, I will re-iterate it here.
I have several machines connected to the same network.
MacBook Pro
Windows machine
iMac.
Only the iMac exhibits any problems.
Clearly, the ISP is not the issue. The iMac is connected via Ethernet to the same router as the PC.
Clearly the Mac is the problem.
Changing DNS server has no effect. -
High Spec New iMacs *ARE* More Expensive!
Ok, so I finally took the decision in mid-February that I couldn't wait another minute for the new iMac range to come out.
I forked out for a top-spec iMac of the (now) previous generation.
Imagine my dismay when just 20 days later, the new range was announced!
BUT!
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7089/picture4fo9.png
Is my iMac.
I decided, for the sake of putting myself through more pain, I would see how much an iMac with the same spec would cost.
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1420/picture5oh7.png
Now granted, the first one includes my 15% educational (student) discount.
So lets add that to the new one.
New iMac Costs: £1706.80
My iMac Cost: £1565.15
And the only change I can see, is the graphics card model.
Does anyone have another explanation where this £141.65 has disappeared to?!

There are some other changes, including...
The new iMacs have double the RAM and larger hard drives in the standard config.
The entry level imac has increased RAM from 1 to 2GB, just purchased 2GB for 20 pounds. Hard drive cost is falling, going from 250 to 320 might not cost anything.
There are internal technical changes that allow up to 8GB max for RAM (previous max was 4GB). The new iMac uses "1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM"; the previous iMac uses "800MHz DDR2 SDRAM."
To the majority of users bus speed will make no difference. Its just a re-design of the motherboard.
The new iMacs have the Mini Display Port, which allows connection of a 30-inch (2560x1600) external display as the second monitor. Previous max was for a digital display was 1920x1200 through the mini-DVI port.
I doubt most imac users add an additonal screen.
I'm sure there are other technical changes that are not so obvious.
The remote has been removed and the default keyboard is now smaller with removal of the numeric keypad (reduced cost), I know that this is no cost upgrade but most people will purchase preconfigured spec.
And as you noted, the video hardware is different.
Video card upgrade, most likely to support SL graphics but marginal for majority of usage.
It's not possible for an outsider to know what accounted for the change in price.
Exchange rate is being blamed on most online forums, for what is a marginal upgrade in the current recession its a difficult to judge why the same entry level imac went from 780 to 950 UK pounds in one day! The 20 inch models still have the 6 bit tn screen which was one of the major issues people had. -
I am preparing to buy a new iMac desktop. What options do people suggest?
I am assuming that I should get the most memory possible. Anything else?
There are other questions. Will I be able to use my old Time Machine Backups with the new machine to recover files? If I have a Time Machine backup drive that is not full yet, can I merely plug it up to the new machine and continue without changes? (Or will the new machine have a virtual heart ache at seeing files on Time Machine that it never had?)A big part of the answer depends on the machine...MacBook Pro is not user upgradable so get the most of everything, same for 21" iMac. If you want the most in speed, go for largest SSD you can afford. You should be able to restore from TM backup from 10.7 to 10.9, but hang on to the old machine until you make sure the content you want has been copied over. Also, look at the specs for what you are buying to see that you have the ports necessary to mate with the external TM storage...some of the newer Macs are pretty limited in port configuration.

Good Morning All;
Got my new imac yesterday and I am already enjoying the experience. Anyone has any great ideas on how to set this up.
What are the best apps people use for everday use. I think all of the preinstalled apps i.e. mail, safari and others are great.
Does anyone think it would be worth while to go to the Apple Store training?Open iTunes and check out some music - your favorite artists are probably there. Rent or purchase a movie you have never seen - that 27" screen is great for viewing. Break out GarageBand and plug in your guitar. Move your old home movies onto the computer with iMovie - or grab your HD video camera and make a new one. Take that collection of photos and scan it into iPhoto, then turn it into a slideshow.
Macs are great for getting out of the way of creative people and letting them express themselves. Break out of a shell and just use it.
Best of luck. -
New iMac extremely slow following migration (Help with Etre Check diagnosis)
Hi gurus,
New iMac - scheduled for genius bar on Friday but trying to avoid the trip. Migrated everything over from 2009 macbook pro to 2011 macbook and now 2013 iMac. I imagine there is a lot of cruft from the repeated migrations and am close to just wiping and migrating from scratch. I don't know, however, how to get my old mail and other critical settings over.
Problem is clearly in the user account. I created a separate admin account and that runs relatively fine. Is the below user account salvageable? Should I delete all my old permissions? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks for the Etrecheck program,
Problem description:
Application hangs and system unresponsive in migrated user account

Why is my new Imac so slow?
I received yesterday my brand new 21.5 inch Imac, with 2.7 Ghz, 16 gig, 1 TB.
My previous imac was a 20 inch basic version from 2007 so i thought it was time for an update. Also I have 5 users sometimes all open at the same time and the mac was too slow for that.
After transfering all the information from one mac to the other with an ethernet cable, I was hopping the new mac would be a lot faster than the old one but that wasn't the case.
The apps like itunes take some time to open when I expected them to open almost immediately..
Is there anything I can do to speed up the mac?
ThanksIf you have a bunch of other users open and those users have lots of applications running in the background, there isn't going to be any computer that can keep up with that!
Why do you need multiple user accounts? Family members using this iMac, too!
Quick fix, close out / log out some user account when not in use.
Keep background running apps to a minimum for each user.
If this advice isn't acceptable to you, there is nothing more you can do with this new iMac because you can't upgrade anything. It's a sealed unit.
You could return within the 14 day return for full refund and get an 21 inch iMac with the faster 2.9 or optional 3.1 Ghz CPU OR step up to the 27 inch model with the 2.9 Ghz CPU with base 8 GBs of RAM and when you get this, install more than 16 GBs of RAM. Perhaps between 20-32 GBs worth of RAM.
Good Luck! -
New iMac wifi slow on Airport network, not on Fastweb
I just replaced our old iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz, Airport Extreme Card 802.11 a/b/g/n - OS 10.6.8) a new refurbished iMac 27-inch (late 2012) (OS 10.8.4). The new computer works great, except with wifi - it is painfully slow on our Airport network, even though the old iMac still runs perfectly fast on that network.
We have two wifi networks in our house (in Rome, Italy). Our internet comes in through the Italian company Fastweb, and its wireless router limits us to only 3 devices. Both computers have fast internet connectivity when we hook up one (or both) to our Fastweb network (802.11g). But that's not a good long-term solution because we need our main computer to talk wirelessly with other devices (like our printer and speakers running off an Airport Express booster).
So for the last three years we have also had an Airport base station (802.11n) based off the Fastweb network. We use the Airport network to connect most of our devices (including iMac, MacBooks, printer, iPads, iPhones, and two Airport Extremes -- one for speakers in the next room, and another to boost the signal throughout the house). For some reason, the new iMac is painfully slow when it connects to our Airport network -- it can take 2 minutes to load a web page on the Airport network, which takes 2 seconds to load on the Fastweb network. I would've thought that the problem lay with our Airport network, except that it's still plenty fast with our other computers. The only problem seems to be the new iMac talking to the Airport network.
Could the problem lie with the Airport Extreme card in the new iMac? It is a refurbished machine, not new. Should I just be taking the machine into the nearest Apple Store? We did buy AppleCare . . . .
Thanks very much for any ideas!

Brand new iMac running slow with only 3% of HD used!
I just purchased a new iMAC 21.5" with 2.9 i5 and 8GB memory and literally have yet to add any programs except AI, ID and PS and its running very poorly. This is my first MAC and i'm very disappointed. I purchased this computer for school where I am getting my BS in media arts. I use an older 27" iMAC at school using all the same programs and more and my new computer doesn't hold a candle to its usability. For example, opening up the programs takes what I consider to be a long time being that there is nothing on the HD. While in PS, and trying to edit, without even having multiple windows open, or multiple layers, it will not instantly edit in the preview window. If and when it decides to edit the computer, then it prompts the color wheel buffer. I specifically told the guy at the store exactly what I would be using it for - to only run the Adobe programs and CC. Since owning the iMAC, I have updated the suggested programs from the apple store and had the most recent OS updates.
The model number of the computer: A1418 any help would be greatly appreciated! If I don't have the correct model I need - I will gladly make the unsaid large retail giant take it back, one way or another. Here is the EtreCheck results:
