My new iMac mid 2010 i7 and the problems with 16 G ram. A summary .

This is a summary of my findings with 16 G OWC ram. The story and details in my first thread on this issue:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2560826&tstart=75
In the past 20 days I have tried- out/tested the OWC rams in pairs of two (8G) in my iMac. No problems at all.
Last thursday I put all the 4 OWC rams (16G)into my iMac and now after about 7 hours I had the sudden shutdowns again.
Based on my own experience with the OWC ram and reading thru the many threads on the Apple Support forum written about this problem I come to the conclusion that by itself the OWC ram is ok. But when put together in a kit of 16 G ram it is causing the so called sudden shutdowns in the new mid 2010 iMac i5/i7. And this seems to be the case with most 3rd party ram. (OWC, Crucial, Strontium, etc)
Also it appears, judging from some threads/posts , that people who have the original 16 G Apple ram do not have these problems.
I have informed or will do so shortly both Apple and OWC about it.

Hi I've went down to 14GB 12 of OWC's NuRam & 1-2GB stick of the original ram supplied by Apple. So far no random shut downs however I did have one lockup which forced me to hold the power button down to shut it down. The system rebooted normally but the display was asleep when it was frozen and even the old 3 finger salute wouldn't phase it.
The only other strange behavior was an odd message telling me that my "Your Mac start up disc has no more space available for application memory."
A 3rd party program SnowTape was running but wasn't responding and the other open applications were Mail, Safari and Finder. I only opened Little Snapper to capture the message afterwards along with the info from iStat.
Here's what I captured from the iStat drop down:
Wired 674MB
Active 8.87GB
Inactive 4.38GB
Free 79MB
Page ins: 78,895
Page outs: 5,169.368
Swap: 59.00 GB
Snow tape 12.07 GB(!!)
Windows Server 110MB
Mail 80MB
Helper 55MB
mds 48MB
I'm curious if it's possible that my migration from a 32 bit Intel iMac w/a Core Duo could have anything to do with it since I used XSlimmer quite a bit to trim the PPC code and some Intel 64 bit long before I purchased my new Core i7 iMac? Another reason I brought that up is an unrelated topic on BluRay ripping

  • Hello,  since the last update 10.6.8, my MacBookPro mid 2010 randomly loses the connection with my wifi AppleTV2

    Hello,
Since the last update 10.6.8, my MacBookPro mid 2010 randomly loses the connection with my wifi AppleTV2 2. It works well with the connection between myPC and filiaire AppleTV2 els and between my iPhone 2 (3G and 4) and AppleTV2 butpoorly between the MacBookPro and AppleTV2.
Then I must quit and restart iTunes every time to continue to read my films. I repairedmy permissions, I restore my 2 AppleTV2 but that do nothing. I concluded that it is a loss of wireless connection. I do not know exactly what to do ...
    If anyone can help

Thanks you rbrian, it seems that your solution is good because after some tests it works very well

  • Re: newer iMac (mid-2010 w/Snow Leopard) fax operation w/o external fax machine

Noting that Apple no longer offers an external USB fax modem product, are similar kinds of devices (like, for example, USRobotics5637 or Zoom3095) reliable for sending (via the print menu in OS X 10.6.x applications) and receiving?
An existing "automatic fax switch" is already connected to the landline, and it routes incoming calls now to the phone handset (after initially listening for incoming fax handshaking signals, which it is assumed would be routed to the iMac -- where they are archived and displayed is yet to be determined) or to the voice answering machine if the handset isn't picked-up after a few rings.  This has been serving admirably as a way to screen incoming calls, BTW!)).  My Internet connection is an ISP DSL, which wouldn't come into play if I'm sending/receiving fax via landline, at "dial-up" speeds and protocols through te external USB fax modem, as I understand it.
My understanding is that the USB external fax modem would be connected to a USB port (USB keyboard or rear panel of the iMac) and the RJ11 connector on the other end of that fax modem would be connected to RJ11 "fax modem" receptical on the existing "automatic fax switch".  I'm guessing that the "automatic fax switch" would go off-hook and dial up the phone number of the distant fax machine, from phone number data provided in the "send a fax" set-up invoked when "send a fax" is selected as a "print" option in an OS X 10.6.x application.
Please advise if the equipment and scenario described, and elaborate on anything I'm missing, will work for the intended goal.
    thanks,

  • I use an iMac (27" 3.4) and have problems with the Magic Mouse. It does not use contact, but opens useless and unrelated submenus with every click, even on the empty desktop. I can't shift, open or close pages. Has anyone out there the same problem?

I use an iMac 27" (mid 2011). Until recently I had OSX 10.6.8 installed, but both, the HDD and SSD had to be replaced, and I lost all the memory.
After the repair through Apple Care I had OSX 10.7.5. (Lion) installed, which developed a Magic Mouse problem.
Unlike with most users, I have no problems with connection, but grapple with a different kind of erratic behaviour.
All fancy stuff is turned off in the mouse preferences. When I try to move, open or close pages, unrelated submenus pop up and hinder the
required task. No matter how often I click, these menus stay there, and they even come up when clicking on the bare desktop.
It renders the mouse absolutely useless, as no work can be done with it.
The first 'Magic Mouse' had depleted batteries every few days, despite switching it off after use.
I was supplied a new Mouse, which does better battery-wise, but the problems are the same. I can't get a result by clicking on any link, due to
the pop-up menus, so both 'Magic Mice' are totally useless.
At present I am using the old USB mouse from my Mac Pro, and that works still o.k.
The problem are not the mice, but the software. The first 2 weeks after installation of OSX 10.7.5 the Magic Mouse worked though.
I have no idea as to what the reason may be.
Has anyone in the community ever experienced that particular problem. Any hint would be welcomed.
    Thank you!

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • New iMac 24 inch, 2.93 GH problems with spotlight and finder

Has anyone had problems with Spotlight flickering in the upper right corner of the screen with each keystroke and the Finder crashing and relaunching when trying to open certain folders copied from an older computer running 10.4.11 or trying to open home folders on G5 and G4 computers over a local network? I have now received two replacements for my original machine from Amazon.com and all three machines have the same problem. This has been going on for nearly three weeks. I have never had problems like this with Apple products before - and have used them since 1985. Is there a design defect in the new 2.93 GH 24 inch iMac? I have been in touch with Apple Support but no one has resolved the problem and none of the product specialists are using this particular model of new computer. Very frustrating!

    HI Edwin,
Check the iMac hard disk for errors. Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

  • New GPU Quadro k5200 installed and having problem with my AE, PPro CS6  not using the GPUs cuda.

Hi guys, I recently bought a workstation from BOXX tech with a new GPU Quadro k5200 installed in it.
I am having problem with my AE, PPro CS6 using the GPUs cuda.
I went to Nvidia Settings and use the specific App to select it to use GPU n- Quadro k5200. But still not working.
    Please help

If you edited the Cudatextfile in the Adobe Premiere CS6 directory correctly then the acceleration should be enabled. The only way it it's not is if you have the wrong driver for that version of Adobe or did not edit the text file with the exact name of the card. You can use the GPUsniffer in that same Premiere directoy with the command prompt to see the name the GPU should be listed as. The Ray Tracer file in AE has to be edited with the same listing.

  • Can I start up intel imac mid 2010 model running os 10.7 with a verbatim external drive running os 10.6 so I can run some older power pc apps to get and archive old data

can I start up an intel imac mid 2010 model running 10.74 with an external verbatim drive running os 10.6 so I can access data on some powerpc applications. If so any help on procedure would be great. thanks for any help

Yes, that model can be booted into Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later. Use the discs that came with the computer to install a compatible version of OS X for the model.

I have an iMac mid 2010. After Disk utilities said the drive was corrupt, I ran the hardware test (extended) 3 times. No problems. I than ran Disk utility again and got 2 messages in red…keys out of order, and ……Volume corrupt, can't be repaired.
I tried to do a system install, but message said…disk can't be changed. Will a complete erase and install fix this ?
    Everything is backed-up.

    There's hardware and software.
Your drive could physically be in good condition but something has caused the file structure to be messed up (it just happens sometimes).  The directory that keep track of files is corrupt.  Disk Utility can help determine if that is the issue.  In some cases it can repair the problem but it cannot do it to a drive that is being used to boot the system while you are doing that.  You have to boot from another drive.  Some things DU cannot repair and you need to try a stronger utility such as Diskwarrior.
A failing hard drive (one with mechanical issues) can be a cause of file structure issues but this is by no means always the case.  Apart from looking at the SMART diagnosis feature of Disk Utility (and smart isn't totally reliable) there often isn't a way to tell if a drive is failing until it suddenly happens, which is why you need to maintain backups.
In your situation it does sound serious and not just minor directory corruption.  You can try erasing (formatting) the drive,  You may need to do this if it is really corrupt, in which case there could be underlying physical issues.  I use old technology but if you have the patience you can try erasing the drive with the security option of writing zeros once (don't do more unless you are going on a 3 week vacation).  This makes the drive not simply assume everything is okay by forcing it try every part of the drive by writing data.  If something is gong wrong you may find it marks a lot of bad sectors, or flat out refuses to format.  Then you know you need a new drive.

  • I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?

I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • IMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) - CPU and Optical drive fans rev up to 4000 rpm

    Hello,
I just want to share my experience with my rather new Imac
I bought this Imac last April and I had the fans roaring after 2 weeks of light usage. I followed instructions like resetting the SMC, unplugging the imac and restarted.
However, I started installing other software like Paragon NTFS, VLC, Firefox and also Istat nano. This happened on a more regular basis and istat nano was showing up fairly normal temperatures - an average of 50° C and I had the CPU fan at 3800 and the Optical drive fan at 4200 rpms. According to apple support, at this temperature fans should be running at factory level or a bit more. Even when I stop all activity, the fans keep up and does not stop even after a couple of hours of inactivity on the imac. Apple support recommended that I reinstall macos on a new partition and run tests and during the tests, the only software I installed was istat nano and still got the fans going with the same result - required a shutdown to bring fans at normal levels and yet average temperatures were around 50 - 55 °C.
Eventually got apple to replace heat sensors - this did not help - still got the same unwanted result, fans reving up to 4000 rpm and not stopping and all that without going above 60°C. I was at the stage to demand a complete replacement but decided to give it another couple of weeks testing.
Last test, a complete reinstall of the OS and this time, without any other software apart from standard software delivered with the mac. Ran a few things like importing over 10,000 pictures with iphoto and some other stuff to increase activity - overall CPU usage was at 5% idle for a good few hours and could not reproduce the problem (istat nano was not installed, so I could not monitor temperature). I started installing Paragon NTFS for mac and ran the same scenarios and still no fans going crazy - putting my hands over the top of the imac, can feel a slight breeze...).
Installed other software such as VLC and Firefox 5.0 but still no istat nano and same high activity, import high volumes in iphoto and also did an empty secure thrash to increase load. CPU usage was to 95 again and still fans are behaving properly.
One thing that comes to my mind with istat nano is that, when the fans get going, the ambient value change to -140 - I do not want to rush into any conclusion but is it possible that there is some interference between istat nano and those new sensors that have come in with Imac mid 2010 (from reading mac forums, Apple has added a new ambient sensor..). Because all the time I have been reinstalling the OS, I have always installed istat nano to monitor temperature and fan speed and I always got this issue. But since yesterday, I have installed clean OS, tested, added some 3rd party software but still no istat nano and I canot reproduce the issue. I have been using the same scenario during all this testing - very high import with iphoto, viewing a film, empty secure thrash, enough to use up to 95% CPU.
Has anyone experienced this? I hope this is the cause of my problem because this mac is making my life easier at home compared to previous PC and also, I want to know that my hardware is not at fault...
I will keep you posted if I get the issue again - could be tempted to install istat nano and run the tests to see if the fans will rev up after this but not sure I want to go through another 4 days of just doing this...
    regards
    Philip

  • Hi ! I have a big problem with my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 ! It may be broken or what seems to be the problem with the video drivers ? I have a built in internal Graphic 288 of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M of 512 of RAM !

    On Mountain Lion :
It happens to turn of my monitor in different situations. Sometimes i believe i have my graphic video broken ! In my town i don't have Apple doctors so i dont risk to go to a service non authorized from apple !
For example there was a day when it turns off when a simply pinch with thumb and 3 fingers for launchbad ...and the opperating sistem it should be restart from power button ! That was when i had Mountain lion 10.7.5 update
Other situation was with photoshop cs6, cs5, cs4 30 days trial versions ...i couldn't buy any versions so i decided to test a earlier versions that can match with my sistem requirements. In all of this three situations my display had turned off after opening a image or photo or 3d graphics in photoshop...anyway sadness.
Other situation : One day i was simply relaxing surfing facebook and ...than i've just simply open an advertising link ...and on that page i was waiting to load a video that used another player than flash player of youtube. Even two seconds didn't stayed open and trust me it turned off my display once again !
    After Mountain Lion :
I told my story to to someone who holds an MacBook Pro i5 etc. and he told me to test the new mavericks maybe it's something broken in my operating system.... and believe me after 2 days of happiness with OS X MAVERICKS , last night my computer restarted because of a problem, and 2 hours ago again....why ? i don't know ! Maybe Video RAM or maybe Memory RAM or Maybe simple conflicts between Trial Photoshop and OS X or maybe my macbook it's 2 old...or i don't know ....for how much i used this mac it should run as an mustang !    MacBook Pro i7 Mid 2010 HDD 500 , 4 GB of DDR 3 , Intel built in Graphic 288 and an NVIDIA GE FORCE 512 , 15 inch display monitor , 283 real cicle counts ( my mac was used as an iphone while charging and using battery) ...i don't know what to do ! Please help !
The Operating System shoes me everytime this error !

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • I have an iMac mid-2010 running Snow Leopard. Is it possible to install Mavericks and Windows 8 on separate partitions while keeping Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac mid-2010 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Is it possible to install Mavericks and Windows 8 on separate partitions while keeping Snow Leopard? If so, can you describe the steps?

That should not be a problem as long as there is enough room on each partition for each OS.
    You would:
Use Disk Utility to partition your HD
Download the Mavericks installer and install it on one of the open partitions (when you run the installer from your 10.6.8 partition, it will ask you where you want to put Mavericks, and you will specify one of the open partitions).
Use Boot Camp to install Windows on another of the open partitions. Mac Basics: Using Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp

My 21" display on iMac (mid 2010) is overheating so much I can't sit at my computer for more than an hour or so.  Very hot.  Also, some shadowy shapes appear in the background on the upper left of the screen. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!
