This came from another thread, but worked for me. Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62 and Windows 8.1. Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update). Reboot, and reinstall iTunes. It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano. Good luck.

The menu is there, it turns on, all the playlists are visable but when I press play it does nothing or flicks briefly on to the page to play but then flicks back to the list again. I have tried all the troubleshooting on the Apple website but again nothing. I wanted to restore it to factory settings but to do this you have to be able to access the ipod in the left column on itunes which obviously I can't do. That was happening before the ipod stopped working. The two issues are separate.

I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem.

Try a different cable. And are you connecting directly to your computer or through a USB hub?

New iPod Nano 5G Not Recognized

Okay, this is a weird one.
I bought an iPod Nano from Apple and it is not recognized by my Mac Pro. My Macbook sees it just fine and so does a Windows PC at work.
I've followed the troubleshooting found in TS1410 on Apple Support. In addition, on the very same Mac Pro with the same USB cable and USB port, iTunes sees my iPhone perfectly fine.
When I click on Apple, About this Mac, click More Info to launch System Profile and look under USB, it sees my iPod Nano as well. However, the iPod Nano does not show up in finder or my Mac Pro.
Any ideas on possible troubleshooting?

Oddly enough, after another reboot, it is now working.

What shows up on the iPod's screen when you plug it in? Are you plugging the iPod into a USB port located directly on your PC versus a USB hub?
What happens if you reset the iPod with it still connected to your PC? To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume down buttons long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Do you have any USB devices plugged in? If so, remove them all, minus your keyboard and mouse and reboot your PC. Then open iTunes and connect your iPod Nano once again.

Hello, i have a 5th generation iPod nano with a click wheel , i am using iTunes version 11.1.5.5 and windows 7 .. i have 2 problems
1) iTunes doesn't recognize my ipod when connected to it. iTunes tells me that i have to restore my ipod to factory settings in order to be recognized every time i connect it to iTunes....
2) Got problem with sync Music on the iPod even after i restore my iPod to factory settings and use it as a new iPod. I go to Music button and sync all playlists i require to be on the iPod, iTunes tells me it is synced and i can eject and disconnect my iPod. after making the eject and then disconnection, i found nothing in the Music on my iPod ... it gives me zero songs ?! even it gives me in settings of iPod that memory is filled by songs sizes, but there is no songs in Music on the iPod?

Doublechecking. Have you tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

I have two ipods, an old classic mini ipod 1st generation and a ipod touch 2nd generation and neither of them are regonised in itunes. I ran into trouble today, iPod Touch and Windows 7. Not sure why it no longer mounted or showed in iTunes.
Looked in the control panel "Printers and Devices" and had yellow error
Troubleshooting didn't help from there. Didn't help to go through Apple steps. But an update to MobileMe (coincidence?) along with Programs control panel and "Repair" reinstall of Bonjour, MobileMe, and also for good measure before I did that, I went into Services and made sure to restart iPod and Bonjour, as well as make sure it would retry starting the service twice after initial failure.
Also, in iTunes I reset/cleared the Synch History in iTunes preference.
Now works. Only had it just over a week. So very new disturbing event.

Just like above. The history is
An old ipod (4, 5th generation)
A few months ago my friend tried to sync it to her windows computer and had to erase all music (it's been compatible to mac always before) but then she could't put in any new music either.
Then it's just been laying around uncharged.
Now I try to sync it to my new macbook pro (itunes 1.11) but it doesnt show up in itunes. When i plug it in itunes show up over all the other programs but i cant find the ipod in it. In finder it's just a device with "NO NAME"
i don't know how to fix this, please help me!

It sounds like your iPod Nano is not recognized correctly in iTunes, but is recognized in Finder but seems to be seen as a storage device.

It appears that you're receiving a message that your iPod nano can't be identified properly, and you've already tried removing and reinstalling iTunes. You've also isolated this behavior to only one of your PCs.
If the issue persists, there are some additional tips in this article that may help, including verifying that the Apple Mobile Device Support service installed properly and is running:

Ipod Nano 2Gb Not Recognized

Hi.
Today I bought a Second Generation iPod nano 2gb. I've downloaded iTunes and connected the iPod via USB 2.0. All my usb ports are on and they don't turn off. When I plug in the iPod, it charges, but does not show up in iTunes or under My Computer. When I plug it in, my computer prompts me to the New Hardware Installing Wizard. It is always of no help to me so I just cancel it. Under my computer, the Ipod does not show. It also does not show in iTunes. I have done the 4 R's 3 times now. I am sure I've searched everything to make my iPod work. I've looked at all the help topics on this page and I've done everything advised and it still does not show up. PLEASE HELP!
